There are dozens of organizations that support our veterans here in Central Pennsylvania. Marc Miagala the Director of the UPMC Veteran Care Services, and Bill Habacivch the Executive Director of Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania joined Asia Tabb on the Spark to talk about the need for those programs. The Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania mission is to combat homelessness among veterans by providing support and services needed to promote an empowered life filled with strength and purpose. “In part, UPMC is part of that support and services. And we're trying to get these men to live the rest of their lives in dignity and respect. We've got a certain percentage of the population that has difficulty in finding, or combatting homelessness, “said Habacivch. The Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania has come together with e community to build 15 tiny homes surrounding a community center for veterans experiencing homelessness. “The great thing about the tiny home is they're shaped in the form of a heart. There's 15 of them. And so, it looks like a little village. And you know, it's going to take the village within the members of the village to help each other. And then it's going to take a larger village to continue to help and pour money into and care into our veterans.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Formally speaking, our guest on this episode is The Honorable Robert Wilkins as he is a presidential appointee. Rob retired as a Master Sergeant after 26 years in the Air Force, but that was just the beginning of his career. While deployed in West Germany during the cold war, Rob got involved in bodybuilding and ended up getting in touch with early leaders in the bodybuilding community, Joe and Ben Weider, the cofounders of the IFBB. This led to Rob later being appointed as the IFBB Liaison to the military and started his life long efforts to encourage fitness nationwide. He is the Senior Military Editor for Muscle & Fitness, the Head of Veterans Outreach for Sightline Media (Military Times' parent company), and most notably he was nominated to be a member of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. When we recorded this episode, Rob was finishing his second term on the council. He served terms under both President Trump and President Biden, one of very few to span two administrations, especially of different parties. He continues to stay closely involved in the work of the Council and the Department of Health and Human Services. You can learn more about the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition HERE. The White House announced the newest council appointees, including Steph Curry and Chloe Kim, HERE.

Gen. Lucian Truscott voiced remarks at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery at Nettuno, Italy. Turning his back on the assembled VIP's he faced the rows upon rows of headstones and apologized to the 20,000 fallen Americans who had been laid to rest far from home. He was quoted as saying, “All over the world our soldiers sleep beneath the crosses. It is a challenge to us – all allied nations – to ensure that they do not and have not died in vain.”Fast forward to Memorial Day 2022, and the familiar voices of brothers in arms begin to call one another on the phone. People usually think of reconnecting with former military buddies as a joyous happening. However, for this Memorial Day, the topic of conversation was not an armistice, a promotion, or even a daughter's wedding or new addition to a home, it was about the latest in a string of suicides that silence the voice of our brothers but brought renewed connections from other familiar voices. One desperately said, “Sir, I needed to call someone who could understand this.”It's often said that for those who have served “every day is Memorial Day,” a traditionally silent observance in the Veteran's mind that can best be described as an impossible trinity made up of an overwhelming sense of guilt, grief, and grit. Usually, a moment of silence on this day is a welcomed and solemn way to honor the voices from our past, but for myself, after losing three former soldiers to suicide in the past few months, silence is no longer an option and the freedom to use our voice is the greatest gift that our veterans have to offer this Memorial Day.Joseph Reagan is the Director of Military and Veterans Outreach for Wreaths Across America. The Sandwich Weekly Podcast Episode 5. Activities and events from Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Hello again and welcome to the Sandwich Weekly Podcast. This is Episode 5, covering activities and events in and around Sandwich for the period Friday May 31 through Thursday June 13. Before I begin, I would like to thank all the listeners who have taken the time to visit and like the podcasts Facebook page and those who have sent some wonderful comments. Remember that this podcast is for you and if you have any suggestions for improvement, please send them to me at feedback@sandwichweekly.com. A special thanks to Geoff Penman who corrected the historical tidbit from last weeks episode. If you remember, I said that Davis Lake extended from Veterans Memorial Park to, what is now, Gletty Road. I didn’t believe that was possible since the buildings on Main Street existed prior to Davis lake being drained. I mistakenly thought that the Park referred to Veterans Park which is across from City Hall. Actually the lake extended from Sandwich Memorial Park to Gletty Road. Sandwich Memorial Park lies west of the YMCA and has an entrance on Water Street. This weeks tidbit of Sandwich history is about what once was an old train car and is now the Bull Moose Bar and Grille. The train car is a former Pullman Palace car that was built in 1893, at a cost of $25,000, and initially shown at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago later that year. It was placed into service by the Burlington (now the Burlington Northern Sante Fe) railroad and was part of their special “Pride of Burlington” train. In 1904, the train car was given to President Teddy Roosevelt to use during his presidential campaign and returned to the Burlington railway after Roosevelt was elected. The train car was put back into use for another presidential election in 1908 as William Howard Taft’s official transportation carriage. Taft won the election. During the next election, Roosevelt ran on his own Progressive Party (or “Bull Moose” Party) ticket Figuring the train car was good luck since it was used by the last two winners of Presidential elections, he got the car from the Burlington railway and used it to criss-cross the country during his campaign. Well, Teddy Roosevelt lost that election to Woodrow Wilson and the train car was returned to the railroad. The train car continued on the Burlington line until it was retired in the early 1930’s. In 1934, Sandwich resident Henry Tattersal bought the train car for $75 dollars and moved it from California to Sandwich, placing it on the southwest corner of Main and Church Streets. He redesigned the train car as a diner and opened it later that year and called it “The Diner”. In 1935, a man by the name of Wright bought the diner and moved it across the street to its present day location next to a house and renamed it “Wright’s Diner”. The train car diner has gone through a number of owners and name changes over the years, eventually incorporating the house into part of the restaurant It has been known as Paul’s Diner, Cucina Plata, Kelly’s Pub and the American Grill. The diner closed in 2008 and sat vacant for a couple years. That’s when Ron and Sue came into the picture. Ron and Sue bought the train car and house and painstakingly restored the inside building and car, as well as spruced up the outside that had deteriorated over time. Having had an antique business for over 25 years, Sue Saballus used her antique connections to find lighting fixtures and decorations to restore the train car to its original splendor when Teddy Roosevelt used it a century before. They even restored the original leaded glass windows along the top of the railcar. The family opened their restaurant in 2010 choosing the Bull Moose Bar and Grille name as a nod to the historical significance of the rail car. A few week’s back 14 of our CSB employees delivered a donation to our friends at Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin. This donation was a part of our recent #Gift2Giving campaign. A campaign that was designed for CSB employees to help strengthen their communities. Here’s a recent podcast we did with Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin Executive Director, Jeff Gustin and Fundraising Coordinator, Brittany Flogel to learn more about what Veteran’s Outreach does for our local communities and U.S. Veterans.
Techniques that help you create business opportunities in the local community and with Veterans in your area.
Veteran homelessness is an issue that is very concerning in our community. VA is committed to aiding those that are homeless or at risk for homelessness. That second part is so important to remember. If a Veteran is experiencing family or financial issues that may lead to them being without stable housing, they should approach VA to get connected with the resources they need. We have a "no wrong door" policy. That means no matter how you contact VA about being homeless or at risk for it, that person will get you connected with the people you need to talk to. Many communities around the nation have proudly announced that they have effectively ended Veteran homelessness in their area. That doesn't mean that there are no homeless Veterans at any given time. It means that they are prepared and have systems in place to aid any Veteran identified as homeless or at-risk for homelessness and get them back into stable housing. I decided to speak with my colleague at the Homeless Veterans Outreach and Communications Office. He shares with us the ways VA communicates with Veterans regarding homelessness, the challenges in reaching Veterans, and how VA approaches that outreach.
A solution to homelessness To assist homeless and at-risk Veterans strive for normalcy in life by providing food, clothing, shelter, and other basic human needs.
David Bass is the Director of the Veterans Outreach for Texas chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), a trans-partisan, educational 501c4 nonprofit that focuses on cannabis law reform. Texas NORML's mission is to change marijuana laws so that it reflects the majority opinion of Texans which is that the responsible use of cannabis by adults and patients should no longer be subject to penalty. Our focus is to increase public awareness of current laws regarding cannabis, as well as the legislative system and legislation regarding cannabis consumers in Texas. Today on Hempresent Vivian McPeak is joined by David Bass, Director of Veterans Outreach for Texas NORML. David Bass is a retired U.S. Army Veteran after twenty-one years of service. Serving in Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom David has served strong, though he is now a sixty percent disabled veteran. When David returned from serving one year in Iraq with the 1st Cavalry Division, he was diagnosed with PTSD. After retiring, the psychiatrist at the Veterans Administration hospital he went to for treatment prescribed psychotropic drugs with terrible side effects. David hated these drugs and their "zombie-like" side effects, leading him to flush them down the toilet in discouragement. He the turned to medical marijuana as an effective alternative to psychotropic drugs. Marijuana alleviates the symptoms of PTSD and has no negative side effects. David Bass understands that medical cannabis is extremely beneficial for veterans who are suffering from PTSD. He now fights side by side with Texas NORML for Texas to legalize medical marijuana for the sake of its thousands of brave veterans. Veterans Outreach for Texas NORML is a movement to lower or even eliminate statistics such as one veteran suicide, homeless, addiction and mental health issues, and returning having PTSD, exhibiting PTSD symptoms or are projected to develop PTSD.
