The French town of Lourdes is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics – this year even welcoming the Pope. This shrine in the Pyrenees Mountains is the site of miracles and Christian fervour, where the young shepherdess Bernadette Soubirous saw 18 apparitions of the Virgin Mary and where many people believe they have been miraculously healed. The Feast of the Assumption is the most important date in the Lourdes calendar, when tens of thousands travel from all over the world, to drink and wash in the shrine's water, and sing and pray in huge candle-lit processions behind the white statue of the Virgin Mary. John Laurenson has joined them to hear stories of the faithful, and to meet a woman whose job description is unique in the world. Dr Giana Monami investigates miracles. Her ‘Bureau de Constatation' brings the cold analysis of science to claims of instant, otherwise-inexplicable, permanent healings. There have been 72 so far. On October 1, 911, during the reign of Emperor Leo the Wise, an all-night vigil was being held at the Blachernae Church of the Mother of God in Constantinople, with many of the faithful crowding the church. St Andrew the Fool for Christ (commemorated tomorrow, October 2) was standing at the back of the church with his disciple Epiphanius. At around four in the morning, the most holy Theotokos appeared above the people, clothed in resplendent garments, surrounded by indescribable radiance, and holding a veil in her outstretched hands, as though to protect all the people. St Andrew said to Epiphanius 'Do you see how the Queen and Lady of all is praying for the whole world?' Epiphanius replied 'Yes, Father, I see it and stand in dread.' This wonderful event is recorded in Epiphanius' life of St Andrew. Because of it, the Church keeps an annual feast on this date.   Note: This feast is particularly well-loved in the Slavic churches. In 1960, the Greek church transferred its observance to October 28, in memory of the Mother of God's protection of the Greek forces holding the Albanian front against Italy in 1940. September 29 is the Feast of the Archangels, a Christian celebration honored in Western traditions (also known as Michaelmas) and November 8 in Eastern traditions. Archangels are high-ranking angels in Abrahamic religions who serve as chief messengers and leaders of heavenly hosts. The Main Archangels are Michael: The protector and leader of the heavenly armies who fights against evil; Gabriel: The primary messenger of God who announces major divine plans; Raphael: The healer and guide associated with restoration and protection; and Uriel: Often included as a fourth, known as the angel of light and wisdom. Western Christianity (Catholicism): Explicitly names and venerates Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael from canonical scripture. Eastern Tradition (Orthodox): Recognizes a total of seven principal archangels, including Uriel, Jegudiel, Selaphiel, and Barachiel. In the Gospel of Luke, the celebrated celestial being who tells the Virgin Mary of her Destiny is the Archangel Gabriel. Angels are the inhabitants of heaven who live with the Triune God,who have never experienced a life like all human beings in the world. They arespiritual creatures who have been with God since the existence of the kingdomof Heaven. God reveals His will and power when He is dealing with His creation.In the life of this kingdom, the role of angels is to serve the almighty God. In our celebration of liturgy, the Eucharist anddevotional prayers, we mention angels in connection with their common dutywhich is to sing and to give praise to the Almighty God. They are like asecurity troop that guards and serves all activities in the Kingdom of heaven.There are two special duties of this troop. The first is to protect all humanbeings from any harm and from losing the way in their journey of faith. Theyare called the guardian angels for us the believers. The guardian angels do nothave names  and they are not our patronsaints who actually have names. The second special task is to carry out and to fulfillsome great tasks from the Almighty God. They are called the archangels who havenames, namely Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, and Saint Raphael. With the term"great" attached to them, it means that their role as heavenlyservants are very important. The scriptures as the official sources for divinerevelation, give us an evidence of faith in these three archangels, whose namesand roles are clearly elaborated. They are different from other angels who haveno names and specific works for each of them.  The archangel Michael is mentioned in the scripturesand also explained in the sacred tradition of the Church as a soldier whodefends the people of God and fights against the great enemy of the Church. Forexample, in the book of Daniel (12,1), Michael is depicted as the one whofights the enemy and defends the People of God from the attacks of theAnti-Christs. Michael is always depicted as the one standing great and strongwhile holding a sword. The archangel Gabriel is described in the scripturesas the servant and bearer of joyful and greatest news from God to His people onearth. For example, he came to Daniel and revealed the message of the coming ofthe Messiah (8, 16-26; 9, 21-27). In the Gospel of Luke, he came to bringjoyful news of John the Baptist's birth (Luke 1,11-20), and he brought also thejoyful news to the Virgin Mary about the birth of Jesus Christ. The ArchangelRaphael is known to us in the Church as the minister for healing blindness,disease, and he also the protector for our journeys. He healed Tobit from hisblindness. He is shown in the Gospel of John as a healer for the sick men atthe pool of Siloam. We should be always grateful to God for giving us thesethree archangels.Let'spray. In the name of the Father ... This is the seventeenth and final installment of my first book The Constant Procession I hope you have enjoyed this memoir that includes how I came to write about the approved apparitions of the Virgin Mary. NOTE: These final chapters were written before this current protracted war between Russia and the Ukraine. The time period I wrote about began in 1922 when the Ukraine was totally controlled by the USSR. In 1991, the USSR broke into the numerous independent countries that included Russia and the Ukraine. Russia became the most powerful country in the region. Chapter 28 continues to describe this earlier time when the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" (USSR) existed- 1922 through its destruction in 1991. A period when Ukrainian churches were under siege by the anti-religious Communist. However, it was Ukrainian Immigrants to North America who kept these Christian churches alive in this diaspora. Sunday, 20 September 2026   saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him, “The Son of David.” Matthew 22:42   “saying, ‘What – you, you think about the Christ? Whose Son, He is?' They say to Him, ‘The ‘of David'.'” (CG)   In the previous verse, it was noted that when the Pharisees had gathered together, Jesus asked them a question. That question is now forthcoming. He was “saying, ‘What – you, you think about the Christ?'”   The question is specific, and it refers to a particular person who was expected to come among the people of Israel. Many translations unwisely leave off the article, “What think ye of Christ?” (KJV, et al.). This leaves the question general and open to the meaning of the word, not a particular person.   In other words, Saul was noted as the anointed (messiah/Christ) of the Lord. Cyrus, King of Persia, is called anointed (messiah/Christ) in Isaiah 45:1. Leaving off the article leaves the question open to the position, reason for the anointing, etc. This is not at all the intent. Jesus asks specifically about “the Christ”, meaning the anticipated Messiah of Israel.   One particular person was to come, as prophesied in their Scriptures. His question is directed to them concerning this individual. Continuing, He asks, “Whose Son, He is?”   It was a question seemingly anyone could answer. The Scriptures recorded the promises, they defined the parameters, they gave locations and timeframes, etc. But they also gave information that had not been thoroughly considered.   It was there, recorded carefully by scribes of the past as uttered through prophets, but it is information not evaluated from the perspective God intended. Therefore, Jesus will present those writings in their proper light. First, however, He awaits their answer, which is, “They say to Him, ‘The ‘of David'.'”   Their answer is first and foremost based on the words of 2 Samuel 7 –   “When they will be fulfilled, your days, and you will lie with your fathers, and I will cause to rise your Seed after you who He will come out from your innards, and I will cause to erect His kingdom. 13He, He will build – house to My name, and I will erect ‘throne, His kingdom' unto vanishment. 14I, I will be to Him to Father, and He, He will be to Me to Son. When in His ‘causing to crook', and I will cause to remedy Him in ‘scepter, mortals', and in ‘touchings, sons, human'. 15And My kindness, not it will veer from Him, according to which I caused to veer from with Saul, whom I caused to veer from ‘to your faces'. 16And it will be established, your house and your kingdom, unto vanishment to your faces. Your throne, it will be ‘being established' unto vanishment.” 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (CG)   From there, the idea of a coming ruler from the line of David continued to be presented in Scripture. This was so commonly understood that the term “Son of David” has been called out several times in Matthew already concerning Jesus by those anticipating the Messiah and believing it could be Him.   Life application: The most important question any person can ever answer is “Who is Jesus to you?” Responding to the gospel, for example, must be in relation to the proper Jesus. If one calls on “another Jesus” (see 2 Corinthians 11:4), they are responding incorrectly. The gospel, when applied to the wrong Jesus, is not the gospel. John Gill gave his thoughts on who Jesus is. His words are worth considering –   “If this question was put to some persons, it would appear, that they have no thoughts of Christ at all. The atheist has none; as God is not in all his thoughts, nor in any of them, for all his thoughts are, that there is no God; so neither is Christ the Son of God. The deist thinks thing of him, for he does not believe the revelation concerning him. The epicure, or voluptuous man, he thinks only of his carnal lusts and pleasures: and the worldling, or covetous man, thinks nothing but of his worldly substance, and of the much good things he has laid up for many years: to say nothing of the Heathens, who have never heard of him; others, and such as bear the Christian name, have very wrong thoughts of Christ, mean, and undervaluing.   The Arrian thinks he is a created God, of a like, but not of the same nature with the Father. The Socinian thinks he is a God by office, and did not exist until he was born of the Virgin Mary; and has no notion of his sacrifice, and satisfaction for the sins of men. The Arminian thinks meanly of his righteousness, and denies the imputation of it to them that believe. And indeed, all such think wrongly of Christ, who divide their salvation between their works and him, and make them their Christ, or their frames their Christ, or their graces, and particularly their believing in him; that is, that ascribe that to them, which properly belongs to him.   And as for those who do not bear the name Christians, it is no wonder that they entertain wrong and low thoughts of Christ. The Jews thought him to be a mere man, and the carpenter's son. The Pharisees thought that he was an Antinomian, a libertine, a loose, and licentious person, that had no regard to the law, and good works: hence those words of his, ‘think not that I am come to destroy the law', Matthew 5:17. Yea, they thought him to be a Samaritan, and to have a devil, and to cast out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils.   The Mahometans, though they allow him to be a prophet, yet think that he is inferior to Mahomet their prophet. There are others that think well of Christ, admire the loveliness of his person, and the fulness of his grace, but are afraid Christ does not think well of them: they think well of the suitableness there is in Christ, of his righteousness to justify, of his blood to cleanse and pardon, and of the fulness of his grace to supply all wants, but think these are not for them: they often revolve in their minds his ability to save, and firmly believe it, but question his willingness to save them: they often think of Christ, what he is to others, but cannot think of him for themselves; only believers in Christ have a good thought of him, to their own joy and comfort: faith is a good thought of Christ; to them that believe, he is precious; and such, through believing in him, are filled with joy unspeakable, and full of glory; such think often, and well, of the dignity of Christ's person, of the excellency and usefulness of his offices, of the virtue of his blood, righteousness, and sacrifice, and of the sufficiency of his grace for them: they think well of what he did for them in eternity, as their surety, in the council and covenant of peace; and of what he has done for them in time, by suffering and dying for them in their room and stead; and of what he is now doing for them in heaven, as their advocate and intercessor.”   Lord God, help us to think rightly about Jesus. May we not get pulled aside or led astray by false teachings concerning the Savior of the world, Your Son. May we consider Him as He is presented in Scripture by You, hailing Him as the incarnate Word, come to bring us back to You. May we rightly hail the glorious name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Questions Covered: 03:38 – Did the Virgin Mary invent chili? I first heard of this on an episode of Tasting History with Max Miller. He talked about Sister Mary of Agreda who was reported to be bilocating from her convent in Spain to the Jumanos Indians in New Spain. All I’ve been able to learn about her is from Wikipedia where it says she is a venerable of the Church from the 1600s. Apparently the Jumanos Indians reached out to friars in the area that they had been visited by a “lady in blue” to seek help, and according to Max Miller the lady in blue also gave them the recipe for chili. According to Wikipedia Sister Mary also wrote books about the Virgin Mary, so I was thinking maybe the Virgin Mary gave Sister Mary the recipe for chili to give to the Indians. It makes my heart warm thinking that the Virgin Mary gave us chili. 12:00 – Mentalese 22:12 – What evidence do you find that UAP's or UFO's are not from outer space, but from earthly beings that are far advanced compared to us? 28:50 – Do animals praise God in their own way? 44:47 – Are sightings of cryptids, ufos, ghosts, etc all thought projections, or real?

For those who have lived a bit longer, there remains a dark mental imprint. A remembrance that recalls brutality inflicted on people within this region as they experienced civil war in the 1990's. Fighting caused by the breaking up of Yugoslavia. For me, the news reporting during that period of the civil war did little to help explain the confusing jumble of puzzling information that ominously included atrocities, genocide and war crimes. Yet this area is where the Madonna appeared. She offered to the world a surprising counterpoint to humanities deeds. It's amazing to me that even during that civil war pilgrims from around the world continued to converge on Medjugorje, which seemed to be located in the middle of the warfare. 1773 was the year in which the Society of Jesus ceased to exist. Pressured by European leaders, Pope Clement XIV issued a Papal brief formally suppressing the Jesuits worldwide. 41 years would pass before, in 1814, Pope Pius VII formally restored the Society. In those intervening years, a number of important questions emerged that would shape the Jesuits, the Church and the world. Arguably one of those pressing questions, one that pointed to the foundation of the Ignatian charism, was this: What would become of the Spiritual Exercises? Countless lives had been changed thanks to Ignatius' spiritual wisdom, and the Church knew that to lose that wisdom—to lose the Exercises—along with the Jesuits would be disastrous. The world needed the Exercises. So, in the wake of the Suppression of the Society of Jesus, different religious order emerged to carry on the mantle of the Ignatian tradition. One such order—the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, founded by Venerable Bruno Lanteri who himself was formed by Jesuits—took it upon themselves to continue offering the Spiritual Exercises. Their work and mission continued, even after the restoration of the Society of Jesus. And in fact, one of the most preeminent writers on Ignatian discernment—Fr. Timothy Gallagher, OMV—is our guest today. And as you'll hear, he stresses the essential work that is the ministry of the Exercises, and how the Oblates and the Jesuits continue to work together in this mission. The Exercises, after all, are a gift to all of God's people. Fr. Gallagher has a wonderful new book out from Ignatius Press that underlines this point. It's called “Thinking Like a Saint: Discernment of Spirits in the Catholic Tradition.” In it, he walks readers through Ignatius' 14 Rules for Discernment. But he does so by grounding each rule in the wisdom of saints who came long before or well after Ignatius. In so doing, Fr. Gallagher reminds us that Ignatius' great contribution was giving language to our shared human experience—and God's Spirit at work therein. Fr. Gallagher was ordained to the priesthood in 1979 as a member of the Congregation of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. In 1983, he obtained his doctorate from The Pontifical Gregorian University, and became a spiritual director and retreat leader. What is the purpose of a creed or ‘I Believe' statement? Where creeds overlap, you find companions for the journey. Creeds can unite us, but they can also divide. Some attempts to rewrite the Apostles' Creed help us understand who God is and can change both our view of the world, and God. Paul saw the shrines to the unknown god in Athens as misguided. Our God is known, and close. Not far away, distant emotionally or unknown. His message to the Athenians suggests that we should embrace those around us while hewing to the bible's teachings. God made this earth spacious for all living creatures., human and otherwise. Because we trust in God, and we are created by God, we can peel back the layers and more fully understand. This message comes from Pastor Sarah. Our New Testament Lesson comes from Acts, Chapter 17, verses 16-28.   Carolyn Winfrey Gillette provides a restated creed: I believe in God the Father, the Almighty God above, Maker of the earth and heaven which were formed in God's great love. And in Jesus, loving Jesus, God's own Son, who makes us new. This the creed of generations, is the faith for our church too. Jesus by God's Holy Spirit was so wondrously conceived, Born unto the Virgin Mary, who your promises believed. Jesus suffering under Pilate, on a cross was crucified. Soldiers mocked hi, friends denied him; he hung there until he died. So it was, our Lord was buried, in a borrowed tomb he lay. To the dead he then descended, where was joy on earth that day? There's more to God's great story: In three days he rose again. He ascended into heaven and he sits at God's right hand. I believe what God has promised: Christ will come as he has said. He will judge the nations' peoples, both the living and the dead. I believe God's Holy Spirit makes the church one family. We're surrounded by God's people, saints who in our Lord believe. I believe that God forgives us for the times we turn away, And that God will raise our bodies on that resurrection day. We rejoice that we'll live forever, singing praise to God's great name. This the creed of generations is the faith that we proclaim.

On the Cross, the Lord charged the Apostle John to care for His holy Mother. The Apostle settled her in a house in Jerusalem, where she lived for the rest of her days on earth, praying and offering counsel and encouragement to the Apostles. In her old age, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her and told her that in three days' time she would enter into her rest. Giving thanks to God, she hastened to the Mount of Olives where she prayed continually, preparing herself to meet the Lord. Meanwhile, the Apostles, scattered in various parts of the earth, were caught up in clouds and miraculously brought by the holy Angels to Jerusalem, so that they might all be with the Theotokos at her repose. After she had blessed them, she gave up her soul to God. The Apostles buried her with all honor, solemnity and joy at Gethsemane. The Apostle Thomas, who was delayed (again!) by God's providence, arrived on the third day and went to her tomb, intending to honor her. But when the Apostles opened her grave, they found her holy body gone and only the winding-sheet remaining. That evening the Theotokos appeared to them surrounded by angels, and said to them, 'Rejoice: I will be with you always!'. Thus they learned that she had been bodily translated to heaven, anticipating the general resurrection of all. Her age at her repose is not known, but many say that she was about sixty years old.

While she lived on Earth, she could be close to only a few people. Being in God, who is actually within all of us, Mary shares in this closeness of God.”She “knows our hearts, can hear our prayers, can help us with her motherly kindness. She always listens to us, and, being Mother of the Son, participates in the power of the Son and in his goodness. We can always entrust the whole of our lives to this Mother.” As Msgr. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me and holy is his Name.” Luke 1:46–49Today we celebrate one of the great solemnities on the Church's liturgical calendar: the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Belief in her bodily assumption first took root in the early Church among those who witnessed this glorious event. Though we do not have written firsthand accounts of the Assumption, a variety of traditions have stood the test of time.According to a tradition handed down by Saint John Damascene in the fifth century, all of the Apostles except Thomas were miraculously gathered in Jerusalem at the time of Mary's Dormition, or falling asleep. After reverently placing her body in a tomb near the Garden of Gethsemane, they later opened it at Thomas's request, who had arrived late and wished to venerate her body. To their astonishment, the tomb was empty. This led the Apostles to conclude, through divine revelation, that the Blessed Virgin had been assumed body and soul into Heaven. That empty tomb is still honored today in the cave near Gethsemane and remains a popular place of pilgrimage.This early tradition laid the foundation for the Church's growing conviction through the centuries that Mary's Assumption was not merely a pious belief but a divinely revealed truth. In 1950, this truth was solemnly defined as dogma by Pope Pius XII in Munificentissimus Deus.Why was the Blessed Virgin Mary taken body and soul into Heaven at the completion of her earthly life? Because, by a singular grace, when she was conceived in the womb of her mother—traditionally known as Saint Anne—her conception was the Immaculate Conception. That is, she was conceived without the stain of Original Sin. This grace, called a prevenient or preceding grace, was given to her through the foreseen merits of her Son's future death on the Cross. That grace transcended time and preserved her from sin in advance, making her Son also her Savior, as she proclaimed in the Magnificat: “My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”Though the Blessed Virgin Mary was not saved by her own merit, having been given the fullness of grace at the moment of her Immaculate Conception, she perfectly cooperated with that grace throughout her life. She remained free not only from Original Sin but also from all personal sin. Since “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), and since the Blessed Mother was entirely without sin, her body and soul were never separated in death, which leads to bodily corruption. Instead, having completed the course of her earthly life, the Blessed Virgin Mary “was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory” (Munificentissimus Deus, 44).Why is this important for us today? Because the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not only a singular privilege granted to her, it is also a sign of hope and a promise of what awaits all who remain faithful to Christ. Mary is the first and greatest disciple; where she has gone, we hope to follow. Her bodily glorification reveals that our salvation is more than spiritual, it also includes the redemption of the body. In a world wounded by sin, suffering, and death, the Assumption shines as a beacon of the final victory of grace. It reminds us that Heaven is our true home, that holiness is possible, and that those who entrust themselves to God alongside our Blessed Mother will share in Christ's Resurrection. As our loving Mother, now enthroned in glory, Mary intercedes for us and draws us ever closer to her Son, encouraging us to live each day with faith, purity, and joyful hope.Reflect today on the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a sign of hope and a promise of what is to come for you and your loved ones. Though we will die and our bodies will be laid to rest, one day our bodies and souls will rise and share in the resurrected glory of Jesus and Mary. This will be our eternity. Turn your eyes to that day, profess your faith in it, rejoice in God your Savior, and proclaim His greatness alongside His most glorious Mother.Most glorious Mother of God, you were singularly privileged to be preserved from the stain of Original Sin at your Immaculate Conception, and you fully cooperated with the fullness of grace throughout your earthly life, thereby meriting the gift of your bodily Assumption when your time on earth was completed. Pray for me, that I may be filled with hope and persevere in grace, so that I, too, may one day share in the glory of the Resurrection. Full Text of Readings Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Lectionary: 621, 622 The Saint of the day is Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary The Story of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church. We find homilies on the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary going back to the sixth century. In following centuries, the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some authors in the West were hesitant. However by the 13th century there was universal agreement. The feast was celebrated under various names—Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, Assumption—from at least the fifth or sixth century. Today it is celebrated as a solemnity. Scripture does not give an account of Mary's assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 speaks of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Many see this woman as God's people. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testaments, her assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman's victory. Furthermore, in 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul speaks of Christ's resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. Since Mary is closely associated with all the mysteries of Jesus' life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit has led the Church to believe in Mary's share in his glorification. So close was she to Jesus on earth, she must be with him body and soul in heaven. Reflection In the light of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is easy to pray her Magnificat (Luke 1:46–55) with new meaning. In her glory she proclaims the greatness of the Lord and finds joy in God her savior. God has done marvels to her and she leads others to recognize God's holiness. She is the lowly handmaid who deeply reverenced her God and has been raised to the heights. From her position of strength she will help the lowly and the poor find justice on earth, and she will challenge the rich and powerful to distrust wealth and power as a source of happiness.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
