No one believes this more than Paul Naude, who believes if you want to succeed as a brand then you need to be your most authentic self, riding your own wave in the hierarchies of Marketing. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Our guest this week is a former Pro-surfer turned entrepreneur. At the height of his surf career winning events and holding top rankings on the Bud Tour, he decided to pass up the money and fame to start an amazing brand called Ezekiel. But being a visionary, and having gone thru A to Z to for a successful start up, he went for round 2 with the brand MADA. We all know how hard it is to create a successful business. When things don't work out, the real life test is how you deal with adversity, conflict, and being humbled. This guy put his faith in GOD, his skills, experiences, relationships, and positive attitude that he continues to have a and incredible career. He has been a HUGE asset over the years. He is currently the VP of Global Marketing at Vissla and we were so stoked to sit down with this smooth operator both in and out of the water, Vince "VINNIE" De La Pena!!!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
It was March 2016. An up-and-coming pro starting to turn heads on the WQS paddles out at his local beachie in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia. What follows next will change the lives of a few people forever. Brett Connellan's story is insane. Attacked by a shark, rescued by one of his best mates, and airlifted to a nearby hospital, Brett is only at the beginning of his way back. A journey of redemption. Of perseverance and resilience. Hit with the words, "you might never be able to walk again", Brett made a choice. A choice to fight. A choice to one day surf the exact same beach again where it all started. A choice to not wanting to be defined by what happened but rather by what happened next. This is Brett's story. This is Brett Connellan's journey from pain to fame and the beauty of second chances.

Today's guest is Donald Brink. Today’s guest is Donald Brink. Donny is a surfboard shaper in San Clemente, originally from South Africa. Donny has made a name for himself in the surfboard market specializing in Asymmetrical design. Donald is a true artist in every way, he is a deep thinker, an analyst, a nerd in the details of discovery. Donny is many things... a painter, a drummer, a journey man, A carpenter, he works well with his hands. He makes surfboards and some of the most highly evolved and absolutely gorgeous designs and aesthetic shapes pleasing to look at. Which is exactly why his customers keep coming back with froth and stoke. Donald Brink has been on the surf scene for a long time now… He is also an ambassador for Vissla. Catch him in the shaping shack from an old converted mobile home down at Salt Creek Beach for their annual cosmic creek surf event. Donny's work speaks for itself. I had discovered Donald Brink years ago through his podcast “Swell with my Soul”, an in-depth listen to Donny’s stream of consciousness as he breaks down surfings little nuances, designs and anything else surf/shape related. It’s a Surfers Surfers Podcast that can be found on the "Surf Splendor Network. I ran into Donny one day at Trail 1, I gave him a complement about his podcast and he invited me over to his van to talk Surf and he showed me some of his new fins he was working on. It was like the wizard was giving me a peek into the castle, I was stoked to talk surf with the legendary shaper. To describe Donald Brink and his work… I grabbed this snippet from the Vissla website: "Donald Brink makes unique handmade surfboards that are essentially simple in design yet obscure in their appearance. Every shape is laden with attention to detail to the functional elements in those creative boards Donald shapes. The boards are an extension of one’s feet and built accordingly to the surfers stance. Designed to surf both left and right, applying changes necessary to the way one stands, his asymmetric concepts promote a more free and forgiving flavor according to the limitations of the foot, ankle, pivot and weight distributions in a surfers ride. His fascination for surfboards and passion for design is contagious, creating a welcome invitation towards the innovative craft he builds. It’s an entire hands-on process that is simple and real, which keeps the beauty of design and craftsmanship his way of life! Boom! Please enjoy my conversation with the talented Donald Brink. In today's world, we're all fans of something, from Sports to Hollywood and even Politics, we all attach ourselves to the success of celebrities – so when they win, we win and when they lose, we lose– This tribal, vicarious relationship between hero and fan creates so much business opportunity because when the emotion of fanaticism takes root there’s no limit to how much we’ll sacrifice to show our devotion. We speak to Michael Gallucci, Co-founder of SportsMemorabilia.com, former VP of Fanatics to walk us through some of the finer points of leveraging fandom. We also visit with Lincoln Eather who breaks down the Surf media winners and losers and which tactics they are using to grow their audiences.

Korey Nolan, 32, spent 7 months collecting the cups for a competition put on by surf brand Vissla. Nolan's board's made out of 700 cups. Nolan also used more than 30 plastic straws and other materials in his board. Most cups came from family members who gave them to Nolan, though some were picked up from the roadside. This guy has done more for recycling good in 7 months than Starbucks. Thanks for doing it Korey.
At 6'3, 120kg Grant Morris, The Aqua Zulu takes up a large portion of the pre dawn light as he approaches my borrowed NSW plated car..."Just fit it in there" he says sounding like a bigger version of Tony Greg, his thick South African accent breaking the dark 5am silence. I flew in the day before and stayed on the other side of the bridge, an hour away. I left at 4am, drove for the first time on Sydney streets and had already, in my short stay managed to piss two local drivers off as I crossed the iconic Sydney Harbour. They weren't shy of blasting their horns..I guess its a way of communicating in the big city, it must be, because everyone does it....often for no reason..I figured they must have heard this show and were saying hello. I waved. This conversation takes place overlooking one of Grant's favourite places to shoot mini's (mini waves) and we discuss all things water photography, surf photography and ocean imagery.Interestingly Grant left a troubled South Africa with nothing more than a suitcase and a dream of a better life. Today, 10 years on, the Aqua Zulu is making others lives better through the act of teaching. Listen in again as another artist chases his clarity and drops some knowledge bombs for you to decipher.
