It was a stunning result for the top-ranked American player on a day of upsets at Wimbledon. Correspondent Gethin Coolbaugh reports.
Wimbledon! The Championships are upon once again with a lot to live up to after THAT dramatic finale at Roland Garros. Join the gang at Tennis Weekly HQ as they react to the men's and women's draws, dish out some dodgy predictions and unveil Collect a Set player picks. On the men's side, the question on everyone's lips might be will we get another edition of the Carlos Alcaraz - Jannik Sinner rivalry? Joel's not so sure and whilst Carlitos has been handed a pretty routine draw on paper, Jannik Sinner got some trick battles including a potential all Italian quarterfinal with Lorenzo Musetti, last year's semifinalist. Great British hope Jack Draper also got dealt a nightmarish draw with both his French Open conqueror Alexander Bublik and Queen's conqueror Jakub Mensik in his section along with Novak Djokovic who has been in the last SIX Wimbledon finals. On the women's side, can Aryna Sabalenka finally get over the finish line and win a Grand Slam title this season? In her way is a potential R3 showdown with Britain's Emma Raducanu or former champion Market Vondrousova who got the better of her recently in Berlin. French Open champion Coco Gauff also may have hoped for a kinder draw with a tricky opening against Nottingham finalist Yastremska with Rybakina and Swiatek lurking close by. The team also discuss prize money as Britain's Oliver Tarvet will NOT be allowed to claim his prize money of at least £66,000 due to still being in college in America. Ohhhh Paulaaa Badooooosaaaaaa... looked like an amateur on court against Simona Halep. Good day of tennis, and I'm not just talking about our bets. Impressive outing between Bencic/Muchova, as well Martic/Anisimova, and Putintseva/Gauff. Horrible stuff from Zidansek, Yastremska, and Badosa, with the latter being the only player to lose UNDER the posted total. Alexandrova keeps winning. Kostyuk x Raducanu has all the ingredients in the world to be match of the day tomorrow, two young and promising player. Two lefties take on each other, Teichmann x Fernandez, also has the fixings to be a really good match. Expect Muguruza, Rybakina to roll, and watch out for Bianca!!!
Dayana Yastremska arose from her sleep in Odessa, Ukraine one night in late February, the sound of the bombs rippling through her body. "You kind of think it's a dream," she tells TIME. "Then you realize it's reality." Russia had begun its invasion of her country. A day later Yastremska, the 93rd-ranked women's tennis player in the world, and her sister Ivanna, a junior player, hugged their father goodbye in Izmail, where a boat was waiting to take the sisters across the Danube river to Romania.

Welcome back, hotties. This episode comes at a difficult moment in the current state of geopolitics and the news, so we want to dedicate much of our discussion towards the calls for peace and brave activism from both Ukrainian and Russian voices in the tennis world. Sport is, after all, a microcosm of the world's social causes. We discuss the Yastremska sisters' heartbreaking flight from home and emotional moments on court, Elina Svitolina's activism, and the brave outspokenness of the likes of Andrey Rublev and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova showing their support as Russian players. We also give our take on the IOC's Recommendations for banning athletes and the tennis world's response, while also overviewing other notable stories like our Women's History Month feature, Medvedev's rise to #1, Naomi Osaka's Fortnite debut, Zverev's disqualification, Leander Paes' domestic abuse conviction, and Iga Swiatek, Rafael Nadal, and Sloane Stephens' stellar play last week. Last but certainly not least, be sure to tune in so you can find out how to vote us for Best Tennis Podcast in the Sports Podcast Awards! See linktr.ee/HoldOntoYourRacketPodcast for more. Take a bow, Queen Dayana. Unbelievable performance by Yastremska that took a lot of guts and guile. I recap the two tournaments in Monterrey and Lyon thus far, and preview the upcoming matches for Wednesday. I also discuss the FUTURE of the WTA tour, whilst also addressing some concerns in some of the young, promising players (Potapova, Kostyuk, Frech) and also some of the veteran players who seem to be on their way out (Kvitova, Halep, Vika)
With war suddenly raging in Ukraine after Russia's invasion, Ben is joined on this episode by Dayana Yastremska, the 21-year-old WTA player who had to flee her hometown of Odessa, Ukraine, after the bombs began dropping on her city. Yastremska tells her journey of escaping via boat to Romania alongside her 15-year-old sister, her attempts to focus on tennis this week at a WTA tournament in Lyon, France, and her hopes and fears for what is happening back home in Ukraine, where her family remains. Organizations you can support to help people in Ukraine include Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, and The Kyiv Independent.
