On July 30th 2023, Yellow Freight announced that they would cease operations after 99 years in business. Chapter 11 bankruptcy followed just one week later.  It took more than one thing to bring about Yellow's bankruptcy, one of the largest in the history of the trucking industry: poorly integrated acquisitions, a strained relationship with the Federal government, and an ill-timed fight with the Teamsters union.  The more coverage comes out about Yellow's recent bankruptcy, the more surprising it is that they made it so close to 100 years in business.   In this episode of Dial P, Kelly Barner looks at Yellow's past and present for sources of trouble and lessons to learn: How the company grew to become so big, creating a number of problems for themselves in the process The factors that led directly to their cease in operations - including a high stakes labor negotiation with the Teamsters union What to watch for as investors and competitors swoop in to take advantage of the company's remaining assets Links: Kelly Barner on LinkedIn Dial P for Procurement on AOP

Our guest shares about the findings of new Gartner research,  2023 Women in Supply Chain Survey.Probably the biggest story in logistics over the past week was the shutdown of Yellow Corp. Also we have a quick update on the ILWU Canada strike, with workers voting on a new TA after rejecting an earlier one. In a sad story, Yellow Freight's bosses have so mismanaged the company that it is shutting down, costing 30,000 jobs. Also this week, Rutgers is trying to get medical students to scab against striking nurses. A new report this week shows Amazon continuously refuses to make accommodations for disabled workers. Then of course the big news this week is the tentative agreement reached between the Teamsters and management at UPS. We go over some of the contracts historic wins, and discuss areas workers have identified where it could be improved. It's official that Yellow Freight is shutting down after 100 years and a lot of people are out of a job. This begs the question - Which is better? Our guest on this week's episode is Greg Tuthill, chief commercial officer at SeaCube Containers. It is estimated that 1.3 billion tons of food are lost or wasted annually worldwide — that adds up to about 30% of all food grown and more than a trillion dollars' worth annually. Much of the waste comes from food that spoils during shipping. The problem is only expected to get worse as people in many parts of our planet face food insecurity. How can we better protect foods from spoiling while they are in transit? Our guest discusses the problems faced in shipping foods and some possible solutions to avoid spoilage. There are a number of labor issues affecting supply chains — labor disruptions at ports in both the U.S. and Canada and a current strike at Yellow Freight to name a few. But nothing looms as large as the potential Teamsters strike at UPS. We share the latest of what is happening with negotiations at the parcel carrier giant.A changing work environment and declining interpersonal skills are combining to create headaches in the workplace — and many companies are responding with training programs designed to create a more professional, respectful office culture. This is according to a recent ResumeBuilder.com survey, released earlier this month. We discuss highlights from the report. In today's episode, Host Dan Hesse talks with Bill Zollars, former YRC CEO and a 24-year veteran of Eastman Kodak during the company's heyday. The story of how Kodak, the third most powerful brand in the world, lost its way and ended up in bankruptcy remains so shocking on the surface that its journey is studied in business schools worldwide. There have been accounts in academic and business journals written about the demise of Kodak, but none with the anecdotes and insider's view that Bill shares. Zollars adds color to Kodak's journey with personal anecdotes of Kodak Moments and his unique insights into what was really going on behind the camera.  The lessons learned from the Kodak saga are applicable to any company - particularly those that think "this could never happen to us". After graduating Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Minnesota, Bill joined Eastman Kodak where he held roles in Finance, Strategic Planning, Marketing, Logistics and General Management during a 24-year career. Bill left Kodak to establish the Integrated Logistics business at Ryder Systems and grew it from $300 million to $1.5 Billion in 3 years. He later became President of Yellow Freight and two years later was promoted to Chairman, President, and CEO of YRC Freight, a company he grew from $1 billion to $10 billion in revenue and into the Fortune 250 during his 12-year tenure as CEO. He serves on the boards of Cigna, Prologis and several private company boards, and was Chairman of Cerner until it was sold to Oracle in 2022. Thomas R. Pophin, 91, of Robinson, TX, passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2021. A visitation will be from 6 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 14, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive, Waco, TX. Thomas was born July 19, 1930, in Hewitt, TX, to Raymond and Loraine Baldwin Pophin. He married Joy Marie Crockett on February 11, 1954. He worked as a truck driver and retired from Yellow Freight. After retirement, he worked as an upholsterer. Tom was a long-time member and servant of Meadowbrook Baptist Church, and he loved his church and his church family. Tom was a selfless person who did for others without expecting anything in return. He drove the bus for youth group trips and went on numerous mission trips to Montana and Colorado. He faithfully helped to build two of the church's buildings. Members and guests were greeted with his smile, kids couldn't wait to share a high five with him, and in later years he greeted many with a hearty “Haw”. Thomas willingly helped with anything Joy volunteered him for. Tom loved Boy Scouts. He was a Boy Scout as a youngster and got to go to Camp Philmont. When his son, Tommy was a boy, he became Boy Scout Scout Master where he influenced many boys' lives. He loved his family dearly. Many camping trips pulling a pop-up camper took the family on vacations to Texas state parks. After the kids left home, he and Joy joined the Good Sam's Camping Club and camped with many friends monthly. He was known as “Shorty”, “Papa”, “Uncle Papa” and the “Great Pillow” because his grandchildren loved to lay on his stomach and take naps. He also had two dachshunds, Copper and Mocha, whom he adored. He was a big fan of the Robinson Rockets and the Baylor Bears. Thomas loved good food, and you could find him at Shipley Do-Nuts in Robinson daily, except Sunday, eating the Grumpy Special, named after him. He also enjoyed the banana pudding at the Rocket Café. But the best “nanner” pudding was made by his loving wife, Joy. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jimmy Pophin; and his brothers Trice Pophin and Earl Pophin. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joy Pophin; his children, Danny Pophin and wife Diane; Karen Pophin, and Tommy Pophin and wife Barbara; brothers, Weldon Pophin and Mickey Pophin; his grandchildren Amy Wall and husband Scott, Matt Pophin and wife Nicole, Adam Pophin and wife Kelsi, Nathan Pophin, Robert Grebel and wife Jennifer, Deborah Grebel-Becker and husband Kevin, Katie Grebel, Thomas Pophin, and Bethany Pophin; and seventeen great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. Memorials can be made to Meadowbrook Baptist Church and Friends for Life. Masks will be required at the visitation and Celebration of Life.

Buying and Selling Transportation/Logistics Companies with Peter Stefanovich Peter Stefanovich and Joe Lynch discuss buying and selling transportation/logistics companies. Today's guest is Peter Stefanovich, co-founder of Left Lane Associates, a business brokerage specializing in the transportation and logistics business. Peter shares his insight that he has gained from working with both buyers and sellers in the logistics industry. He tells us such things as why now the best time is to sell a logistics company, things to do when preparing to sell, how long the selling process takes, and why sellers choose to use a broker. [1:02] Peter's introduction and bio. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada to immigrant parents. He has one sister and a 2-year-old nephew. Started his first company, Saxcom, at age 16, providing custom computer and networking solutions for small and medium-sized business Graduated from Western University with degrees in Business and Political Science. Peter started in the transportation/logistics world in 2008 while working in Chicago for an international retail construction company Focused on retail fixtures when working for Wheels Group, now owned by Radiant (a 3PL company). upon returning from the USA in 2013. Peter Stefanovich started Left Lane Associates with Mike McCarron in 2015   [2:20] How did you end up starting a business brokerage specializing in transportation and logistics companies? Peter is a lifelong entrepreneur Started a computer networking company and sold the business at age 19 Doing the logistics for fixtures at a retail construction company.   [3:54] Why not start a 3PL or a trucking company? Why a business brokerage? Helping entrepreneurs find a solution to get out of the business that they're in. Entered business brokerage to fill the void by providing transportation and logistics experience.   [6:07] Why do owners of transportation and logistics companies come to you? Or any other broker for that matter? Why not go it alone? Owners in this industry have likely never sold a company before, so they want to trust the process with someone more experienced in the process. You only get one chance to sell your business - once it's done, you can't go back Brokers specialize which let owners focus on their business, while preparing to sell   [8:23] What are the reasons that owners want to sell their transportation or logistics company? They might want to or need to due to the economy. The four dreaded Ds: divorce, death, delinquent partner, and disease. Owners have many reasons for wanting to sell – personal, economy, retirement, industry, change of pace, etc.   [9:48] Explain why it's a great time to sell, and maybe a great time for buyers too. We've had a bull market for the past nine years, and there's been extreme growth in the transportation industry for the past year. People haven't seen rates like this in the industry, ever There has never been a better time to sell For buyers, money is currently cheap to get a hold of from a banking standpoint Transportation companies are looking to buy other transportation companies because of driver shortages Rates to borrow money are some of the lowest they've ever been Private equity is very interested in the transportation industry   [14:18] What is the partnership and genesis of working with Mike McCarron like? Mike and Peter met at Wheels Group, a 3PL out of Washington state Mike started with Yellow Freight right out of college and was eventually one of the top salespeople He outgrew the role and wanted to start his own firm He started MSM Transport and eventually sold it in 2012 to Wheels Group   [17:27] Owners of transportation and logistics businesses should prepare years in advance before selling – what should that preparation look like? What should they be doing to make their business more attractive to prospective buyers? Companies often come to Left Lane Associates ready to sell, but typically there is preparation required to have the company sell for top dollar Legal issues must be resolved – internal and external Get authorizations and certifications in order Get rid of underutilized assets Release underperforming employees Lean out the organization Maximize EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization). Develop a specialization Technology (CRM, TMS, website, and social media) What people perceive about your company is often based on your web presence. Any dollar you save could be worth 3x-4x more when you sell.   [29:02] What is the one thing owners looking to sell their business should know about the process? It takes a lot longer than you think to sell a business On average, it takes 18 months to sell a transportation or logistics company It's not just your schedule, it's the schedule of the buyer Peter wears many hats during the selling process   [31:38] Why do prospective buyers call a broker when they want to buy a transportation or logistics company? Those guys surely must know the market and players who might be a nice acquisition target? They might be too busy growing their company, so they want somebody who has M&A expertise to manage the process Sellers are often hesitant to give any information to competitors, so a broker can act as a buffer There are lots of buyers right now, but not enough quality companies for sale There is at least a 4:1 ratio of buyers to sellers.   Learn More About Buying and Selling Transportation/Logistics Companies Peter Stefanovich Twitter: @monetizeyourco leftlaneassociates.ca The Logistics of Logistics Podcast If you enjoy the podcast, please leave a positive review, subscribe, and share it with your friends and colleagues.
