Elyas M'Barek wurde am 29. Mai 1982 in München geboren. Bereits während seiner Schulzeit entdeckte er seine Leidenschaft für die Schauspielerei und erhielt seine erste Rolle in der Komödie "Mädchen, Mädchen" (2001). Seinen Durchbruch feierte M'Barek mit der Rolle des Cem Öztürk in der ARD-Serie "Türkisch für Anfänger" (2006-2008), für die er 2006 den Deutschen Fernsehpreis als bester Seriendarsteller erhielt. Die Serie wurde 2012 erfolgreich als Kinofilm adaptiert. Weitere Bekanntheit erlangte er durch seine Rolle als Zeki Müller in der erfolgreichen Filmreihe "Fack ju Göhte" (2013, 2015, 2017), die ihn endgültig zum Star machte. Neben seinen komödiantischen Rollen zeigte M'Barek auch sein Talent in ernsteren Filmen wie "Die Welle" (2008), "Zeiten ändern dich" (2010), "Der Medicus" (2013) und "Der Fall Collini" (2019). Zurzeit ist Elyas M'Barek mit "Alter weißer Mann" im Kino zu sehen.

As one of the most influential musicians in Turkish history and the first modern pop star of Turkey, Zeki Müren gained huge popularity beginning in the 1950s across all different communities in Turkey, in spite of his groundbreaking behaviors like cross-dressing, and can be seen as an LGBTQ+ trailblazer. Even now, Zeki Müren continues to have a profound influence on Turkish society and on the Turkish people. We begin discussing how he became so popular with such a wide audience, then Beyza and Jeff talk about their own experiences with Zeki Müren, and what led them to create the interactive documentary Zeki Müren Hotline. After that, we compare the pop culture background while Zeki was performing with the current Turkish pop culture environment, and also discuss how Zeki kept the balance of pushing boundaries and also being conservative, how he used some survival behaviors, and what made him a national hero. Finally, our guests Beyza and Jeff share some stories from the Zeki Müren Hotline. Beyza Boyacıoğlu is an award-winning documentarian and film editor from Istanbul, currently based in Brooklyn. Outside of Turkey, the name Zeki Müren might not ring a bell. But inside the country, he is one of the most beloved cultural icons who rose to fame as a singer in the 50s and has remained widely popular even after his sudden death in 1996. He is known as the 'Sun of Art' and has been compared to the Turkish version of David Bowie, Freddie Mercury or Liberace, because of his flamboyant outfits that included platform boots, mini skirts, sequined capes and feather boas (Seriously, if you haven't seen photos of him, go look it up right now. It's fabulous) He found a way to be exactly who he wanted to be, even while living in a time and society that didn't necessarily understand or accept those things. To understand more about this legendary legend, I'm joined this week by Beyza Boyacıoğlu, who co-created the Zeki Muren Hotline with designer Jeff Soyk. It's an incredible interactive web documentary that explores Zeki's life and legacy by collecting messages from anonymous callers who share their memories of the artist. It was honoured this year by the Webby Awards for Best Net Art.

The making of citizens in and through music is a 19th-century commonplace. But the ground of this longstanding musicological discussion has shifted with globalization, mobility, and the parlous condition of nation and state today. What does it now mean to label a musician an “ideal citizen”? This talk looks at the question of musical “multi-citizenship in multiple places” (Parlati/Chamoiseau) from a postcolonial perspective, and reflects on Turkish crooner Zeki Müren and French-Lebanese slam poet Marc Nammour – and the grounds they might provide for reconsidering the familiar myths of the citizen composer. De queer representatie in Turkije is er een met vele gezichten: Turkije telt een rij artiesten, iets waar Nederland nog wat van kan leren, die al jarenlang voor representatie zorgen. Bulent Ersoy was vooral actief in de jaren 80 en 90 en Zeki Müren in de jaren 60. Twee zeer geliefde queer artiesten. Iedereen houdt van hun muziek. Maar bekommeren ze zich ook om hun mensenrechten? Want geheel glamoureus was hun leven niet. En waarom is dat zestig jaar later nog niet anders voor de meeste queer personen in Turkije? In 2016 ontstond er een sterk geluid tegen het geweld waar transgenders dagelijks mee moeten dealen: ontzegging van werk en woning, bedreiging, stalking, (huiselijk) geweld en moord. Toen Hande Peker, een Turkse trans vrouw in 2016 vermoord werd bundelden activisten hun krachten. Ze sloten zich aan bij de Gezi Park protesten en de queer community kreeg eindelijk de erkenning die ze verdiende. Maar lang duurde het niet, de politie schoot met waterkanonnen op de stoet protesteerders in en de nieuwe wet en regelgeving brengt de rechten van queer personen nog meer in gevaar. Hoe waait het geluid uit Turkije over naar de Turkse community in Nederland? In november 2020 wordt hier de Turks Nederlandse Ozge Bilir vermoord. Trans personen van kleur moeten nog altijd vrezen voor hun leven. Wat kunnen wij er binnen onze community tegen doen? Es wird mal wieder Zeit für einen deutschen Kinofilm! Ich erzähle dir heute etwas über den Film „Fack Ju Göhte“, der 2013 in die Kinos kam. Es ist eine Komödie ab 12 Jahren, das bedeutet, dass er für Kinder unter 12 Jahren nicht geeignet ist. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass im Film sehr viel geflucht wird - Sex und Gewalt kommen auch vor. Und er ist garantiert nicht politisch-korrekt… Der Film beginnt im Gefängnis. Ein junger Mann wird entlassen. Wieder draußen in der freien Welt will er als Erstes an das Geld kommen, das er bei seinem letzten Raubzug erbeutet hat. Aber das ist blöderweise unter einer neuen Schul-Turnhalle vergraben - und er kommt nicht mehr ran. Also wird er kurzerhand Aushilfslehrer an der Goethe Gesamtschule, um ungehindert nachts suchen zu können. Nachts sucht er also, und tagsüber macht er den Lehrer-Job. Den macht er aber natürlich ganz anders als die richtigen Lehrer und Lehrerinnen. Es geht vor allem um Teenager und deren ganz normale Probleme im Schulalltag. Genauer gesagt um Teenager, die wenig Chancen für ihre Zukunft sehen und als Versager gelten. Und dann geht es natürlich noch um die Liebe. Und es geht darum, dass man ein besserer Mensch werden kann - wenn man es selber möchte. Also alles keine wirklich neuen Themen - aber gut umgesetzt. Der Film ist lustig und derb, er hat Tempo und gute Schauspieler. Gespielt wird die Hauptrolle des Zeki Müller von Elyas M’Barek. Er muss gleich die schlimmste Klasse der Schule übernehmen. Das ist eine Klasse voller Verlierer, die den Lehrern Streiche spielen und nichts lernen möchten. Mit sehr unkonventionellen Mitteln bringt der Aushilfslehrer die Teenager dazu, mehr von ihrem Leben zu wollen. Die zweite Hauptrolle spielt Karoline Herfurth, die eine sehr gewissenhafte und idealistische Referendarin spielt, also eine Lehrerin in Ausbildung. Die restlichen Rollen wurden entweder mit Nachwuchsschauspielern besetzt oder mit altbekannten Größen. Die Rektorin wird von Katja Riemann gespielt, eine Lehrerin von Uschi Glas. Beide Frauen kennt in Deutschland wahrscheinlich jeder Mensch über 30. Der Film spielt übrigens in München, gedreht wurde auch an einer echten Schule in München. „Fack Ju Göhte“ war extrem erfolgreich. In den ersten 17 Tagen nach Kinostart hatten ihn schon drei Millionen Kinobesucher gesehen. Mittlerweile liegt er auf Platz 8 der erfolgreichsten deutschen Filme seit 1968 mit über 7 Millionen Zuschauern. Kein Wunder, dass gleich zwei Jahre später die Fortsetzung ins Kino kam und weitere zwei Jahre später Teil 3. Hinter dem Film steckt Bora Dagtekin, der das Drehbuch geschrieben hat und Regie führte. Hear from four alums of the graduate program in Comparative Media Studies as they discuss their experience at MIT and what their careers have looked like in the fields a CMS degree prepared them for. Panelists include: Matthew Weise, ’04, a game designer and educator whose work spans industry and academia. He is the CEO of Empathy Box, a company that specializes in narrative design for games and across media. He was the Narrative Designer at Harmonix Music Systems on Fantasia: Music Evolved, the Game Design Director of the GAMBIT Game Lab at MIT, and a consultant for Warner Bros., Microsoft, PBS, The National Ballet of Spain, and others on storytelling and game design. His work, both creatively and critically, focuses on transmedia adaptation with an emphasis on the challenges of adapting cinema into video games. Matt has given lectures and workshops on film-to-game adaptation all over the world, and has published work on how franchises like Alien, James Bond, and horror cinema in general are adapted into games. Karen Schrier, ’05, an educator, innovator, and creative researcher who is always looking for collaborators and new connections. She is an Associate Professor at Marist College and Director of the Games and Emerging Media program. She also runs the Play Innovation Lab, where she researches and creates games that support learning, ethical reflection, and compassion. Her recent book, Knowledge Games, was published last year (Johns Hopkins University Press), and was covered by Forbes, New Scientist, Times Higher Education, and SiriusXM. Dr. Schrier also edits the book series, Learning, Education & Games, which is published by ETC Press (Carnegie Mellon), and she is the president of the Learning, Education & Games group of the IGDA (International Game Developers Association). She holds a doctorate from Columbia University, master’s from MIT, and a bachelor’s from Amherst College. Her project Voxhop, a tool for voice collaboration in virtual reality, is a 2017 j360 Challenge winner funded by the Knight Foundation and Google News Lab. She was a 2016 fellow at the BuzzFeed Open Lab, as well as a researcher in the Imagination, Computation, and Expression Lab at MIT. She has cofounded Mediate, an MIT DesignX-backed company that enables collaboration in and analysis of 3D environments. She has an M.S. from MIT in Comparative Media Studies, and a B.A. from the University of Chicago, in Economics. Beyza Boyacioglu, ’17, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and artist. Her work has been presented at MoMA Doc Fortnight, IDFA DocLab, Morelia International Film Festival, RIDM, Anthology Film Archives amongst other venues and festivals. She has received grants and fellowships from LEF Foundation, MIT Council for the Arts, Flaherty Seminar, SALT Research and Greenhouse Seminar. She was an artist in residence at UnionDocs in 2012 where she co-directed “Toñita’s” — a documentary portrait of the last Puerto Rican social club in Williamsburg. She is currently producing a cross-platform documentary about Turkey’s gender-bending pop legend Zeki Müren. The project is comprised of a feature film “A Prince from Outer Space: Zeki Müren”, a hotline and a web experience. Currently, Boyacioglu works as a Producer at the MIT Open Documentary Lab.

The music of Turkey includes diverse elements ranging from Central Asian folk music and music from Ottoman Empire dominions such as Persian music, Balkan music and Byzantine music, as well as more modern European and American popular music influences. In turn, it has influenced these cultures through the Ottoman Empire.[1] Turkey is a country on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, and is a crossroad of cultures from across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, the Caucasus and South and Central Asia.The roots of traditional music in Turkey spans across centuries to a time when the Seljuk Turks colonized Anatolia and Persia in the 11th century and contains elements of both Turkic and pre-Turkic influences. Much of its modern popular music can trace its roots to the emergence in the early 1930s drive for Westernization.[2]With the absorbance of immigrants from various regions the diversity of musical genres and musical instrumentation also expanded. Turkey has also seen documented folk music and recorded popular music produced in the ethnic styles of Armenian, Greek, Polish, Azeri and Jewish communities, among others.[1] Many Turkish cities and towns have vibrant local music scenes which, in turn, support a number of regional musical styles.Historical backgroundTraditional music in Turkey falls into two main genres; classical art music and folk music. Turkish classical music is characterized by an Ottoman elite culture and influenced lyrically by neighbouring regions and Ottoman provinces, such as Persian and Byzantine vocal traditions and South European cultures.[3] Earlier forms are sometimes termed as saray music in Turkish, meaning royal court music, indicating the source of the genre comes from Ottoman royalty as patronage and composer.[4] Neo-classical or postmodern versions of this traditional genre are termed as art music or sanat musikisi, though often it is unofficially termed as alla turca. In addition, from the saray or royal courts came the Ottoman military band, Mehter takımı in Turkish, considered to be the oldest type of military marching band in the world. It was also the forefather of modern Western percussion bands and has been described as the father of Western military music.[5]Turkish folk music is the music of Turkish-speaking rural communities of Anatolia, the Balkans, and Middle East. While Turkish folk music contains definitive traces of the Central Asian Turkic cultures, it has also strongly influenced and been influenced by many other indigenous cultures. Religious music in Turkey is sometimes grouped with folk music due to the tradition of the wandering minstrel or aşık (pronounced ashuk), but its influences on Sufism due to the spritiual Mevlevi sect arguably grants it special status.[6]It has been suggested the distinction between the two major genres comes during the Tanzîmat period of Ottoman era, when Turkish classical music was the music played in the Ottoman palaces and folk music was played in the villages.[7][3] However, with the type of cultural cross-breeding the empire allowed, both genres relate to the multitudes of ethnic groups to be found in the make-up of the Ottoman Empire. In that sense they are the first examples of their kind in world music.[7][3] Although Turkish classical and folk music have generally enjoyed a broad popularity regardless of subcultures, regional classical music has had lapses in prominence.When the modern Turkish state was proclaimed in 1923, the new republic aimed at creating a nation with a distinct and unified culture. This included replacing the culture of Istanbul, which was perceived as the Ottoman elite, by the culture of rural Anatolia, which was considered Turkish. Hence, folk music was promoted, while classical music became less popular.[2] Moreover, western classical music was introduced and encouraged in accordance with one of the most important policies of the new state, westernization of the society.[2] By the 1960s, western popular music had been introduced to Turkey, with the name hafif-batı müziği (light-western music). At the same time, socialist movements were getting popular in accordance with the world. Musicians who were inspired by these movements started adapting folk music with contemporary sounds and arrangements, giving rise to Anatolian rock and protest music or özgün muzik (authentic music). Increasing immigration in the 1970s from southeastern rural areas to big cities in the west, and particularly to Istanbul, gave rise to a new cultural synthesis, which was regarded as a degeneration of Istanbul music by some musicologists whom favoured Ottoman classical music. Paradoxically things had come full circle; a genre that had once been thought as foreign was now viewed as Turkish or alla turca, as it was reminiscent of a time when Turks were at the height of their power in world events.[2]The new residents of metropolitan areas suffered from hard economical conditions and had difficulties in adapting to the big city from rural life. This newly constructed culture proceeded to generate its own music, derogatively termed by Istanbul musicologists as arabesque or arabesk, due to its high pitched wailing and exaggerated symbolisms of suffering. Arabesque was a synthesis of Turkish folk and middle-eastern music, similar to the growing left-wing subculture's own "arabesque", which was a new version of protest music fused in folk traditions. In the era influenced by the military government, arabesque and özgün genres were labeled "degenerate" and discouraged by the government, while Turkish classical music and contemporary music were promoted.[2]Despite this however, western-style pop music lost popularity to arabesque in the late 70s and 80s, with even its greatest proponents Ajda Pekkan and Sezen Aksu falling in status. It became popular again by the beginning of the 1990s, as a result of an opening economy and society. With the support of Aksu, the resurging popularity of pop music gave rise to several international Turkish pop stars such as Tarkan and Sertab Erener. The late 1990s also saw an emergence of underground music producing alternative Turkish rock, electronica, hip-hop, rap and dance music in opposition to the mainstream corporate pop and arabesque genres, which many believe have become too commercial.[8]Ottoman classical musicAs the Empire grew, musics of conquered peoples of the Balkans and the Mediterranean were incorporated into an increasingly diverse Ottoman music. The Ottoman Empire was a multi-ethnic state, and cultural influences, including music, were shared by groups including the Turks, Armenians, Greeks, Kurds, Arabs, Persians, Assyrians and Jews.With the beginning of the decline of the empire in the early 19th century, one branch gradually evolved from serious artistic music to "urban entertainment music".[2] But the essence of classical Turkish music— a refined aesthetic, a vast repertoire, a sophisticated makam system of melodic modes, a variety of usul rhythmic modes, a rich body of Ottoman poetry—survived throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and continues in the 21st century.Though akin to today's classical Arab music, classical Turkish music has a broader repertoire, utilizes a wider range of makams and usuls, and enjoys a strong following of audiences, performers, and students. One can find more distant similarities with Azerbaijan, Uzbek, and other Turkic musics. [3]Three of the best known composers of Turkish classical music are Buhurizade Itri, Dede Efendi, and Haci Arif Bey. Throughout its history until the late 20th century, classical Turkish music was transmitted orally from teacher to student via the meşk system. Some compositions lost from the oral repertoire have survived in Hamparsum notation, developed by composer and musician Hamparsum Limonciyan by request of Sultan Selim III.In 1934, the government of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk banned Ottoman classical music, though the ban was lifted the following year. Even though the Republic of Turkey has a considerably less multiethnic character than the Ottoman Empire, important performers and composers like Yorgo Bacanos and udi Hrant Kenkulian came from minorities, while favourite Turkish composers include Sadettin Kaynak.Some of the important musicologists involved with this genre are Prince Cantemir, Cinuçen Tanrıkorur and Rauf Yekta Bey who wrote the first modern account of Turkish classical music available in a Western language. [4]Modern Turkish singers of neo-classical music include Münir Nurettin Selçuk, Müzeyyen Senar, Zeki Müren, Bülent Ersoy and Emel Sayın. Safiye Ayla ranks as one of the great secular classical singers of the early 20th centery. Kâni Karaca is considered one of the great singers of mosque music and Mevlevi music in the last third of the 20th century. Leading instrumentalists include Necdet Yaṣar (tanbur), Niyazi Sayın (ney), İhsan Özgen (kemenche), Akagündüz Kutbay (ney—deceased).Listen
