“Enemy Alien”: How Chicago photojournalist Jun Fujita avoided Japanese internment camps

Jun Fujita is the Japanese-American photographer behind some of the most recognizable photographs taken in Chicago in the 20th century, including his shots of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929, the Eastland passenger boat disaster of 1915, and the 1919 Chicago race riots. Fujita was also a published poet and something of a regional celebrity, known for socializing with William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway. Fujita's foreign identity also made him the subject of government inquiry and suspicion on multiple occasions — during both World War I and World War II — according to Graham Lee, Fujita's great-nephew and the author of a new Fujita biography, “Jun Fujita: Behind the Camera.” After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, Fujita's assets were frozen, his business was shuttered, his cameras were taken away, and he constrained himself to Chicago to avoid possible internment, Lee said. How did Fujita navigate this perilous time for an immigrant in Chicago? We sat down with Lee to discuss how Fujita, a “supremely confident person,” came to rely on both the support of his community and his wits.

You may never have noticed it, but for many people – maybe you – a full moon can mess with your sleep and cause you to lose sleep. How does that happen? Listen as I explain. https://www.self.com/story/full-moon-sleep Over the last several years, research has uncovered some remarkable benefits of listening to music. Not just vague, “music makes you feel better” benefits – it now appears music can actually treat some illnesses. Neuroscientist Dan Levitin has been looking at this research for several years and joins me to share some exciting news about the powerful, positive health effects of listening to music you like. Dan is author of a book called I Heard There Was a Secret Chord: Music as Medicine (https://amzn.to/46QoQcE). Many skills humans have possessed for ages are getting lost. For example, using a map or your sense of direction to find your way somewhere. With GPS people have lost this skill. Solitude. The idea of sitting alone with your thoughts is so uncomfortable, people just reach for their phone to keep them occupied. While technology makes these (and many other skills) no longer necessary, there is a price to pay. Here to explore and explain that is Graham Lee, author of the book, Human Being: Reclaim 12 Vital Skills We're Losing to Technology (https://amzn.to/46MP53A)  You may have noticed your brain seems sharper at some times more than others. Listen as I explore why it is important to realize when that happens and what to do when it does. David Rock author of “Your Brain At Work” https://amzn.to/4g3Fk5F Learn more about your ad choices. Do moments where you run up against your dependence on modern technology get you wondering about the ways some of your personal capabilities seem to be atrophying?Graham Lee has spent years thinking about this idea. While he's a digital skills educator who appreciates the way technology can enhance our abilities, he worries that our ever-increasing reliance on algorithms and artificial intelligence may be robbing us of elements that are vital to the core of who we are.Lee is the author of Human Being: Reclaim 12 Vital Skills We're Losing to Technology, and today on the show, we talk about some of those dozen endangered skills, including navigation, reading, writing, craftsmanship, and solitude. Lee offers case studies on how these skills enhance our humanness, why their loss matters, and how we can reclaim these capabilities and a greater sense of satisfaction and self-efficacy.Resources Related to the PodcastWe, the Navigators, The Ancient Art of Landfinding in the Pacific by David LewisAoM series on learning how to navigate with a map and compassAoM Podcast #534: How Navigation Makes Us HumanAoM Podcast #793: The New Science of Metabolism and Weight LossAoM article on the benefits of solitude Indian Running: Native American History and Tradition by Peter NabokovWatchmaker Geoge DanielsCastaway Alexander SelkirkNotebookLMConnect With Graham LeeGraham on LinkedIn

Hear how to build a culture that values men and women  There are times when you are fortunate to meet exceptional women. Kim Graham Lee is one wonderful woman who is moving in a very important direction — how to build allyship for men and women. Kim is the CEO of Integrating Women Leaders (IWL) which is joining with Women Business Collaborative, of which I am a member, to conduct the first nationally-focused study to measure the practice of allyship with women in corporate America today. The primary focus of IWL's 2022 benchmark study is to take stock of where we are in building better cultures where men and women can support each other. This is truly groundbreaking...please plan to listen. Watch and listen to our conversation here When women are in leadership roles, companies do better Yet for women to move into corporate leadership roles is often a challenge. Women do not need to be “fixed.” Rather, they need business environments where they can bring their “whole selves” into the workplace, and find a culture where they are respected, heard and followed. This podcast will tell you more about the research that's underway and how you can join in the project. If you want your company to participate, that's fantastic. You just need to provide a sample of 100 people (50 men and 50 women). To start the survey, click on the image below. You'll find that you can learn a great deal about your organization and how your culture is fostering a place where men and women work together to build better, or not. How are you creating a place for men to be allies of women? You can also take the survey as an individual.  The results will be made available June 9, 2022 at the 2022 IWL Women's Leadership Conference. For more information, check out IWL's website: www.iwlfoundation.org. News broke yesterday that a dispute between neighbours ended in drastic action with a tree being sliced in half. Bharat Mistry has a 25 year old 16 ft fir tree in his front garden, whose bushy foliage happened to breach the perimeter with his neighbour's property on a quiet suburban road in Sheffield. During lockdown over the past year the two men, Mr. Mistry and Mr. Graham Lee, have been at loggerheads over the tree as the neighbour claims that the tree is attracting noisy birds who poo all over his driveway. It came to a head recently when Mr. Lee allegedly hired a tree surgeon to slice the tree right down the middle so that it no longer infringed on his property. Further, we need to be confident that changes we make to the code do not introduce unintended flaws. Automated testing is a technique widely used in industry to capture information about the expected behaviour of software and ensure that the system retains that behaviour through its evolution. In this talk, Graham explores the application of the technique to scientific software.

This is after Thameside Radio had a bank holiday broadcast (on the 1st Sept) where Sarah's show proved to be was popular.  The week's new releases include Prince Charming, Homo Sapien, and the weird but pointless Schoolgirl Song by Lola Payola (which I don't have a copy of). Bob plays a demo tape of "Cry the Night Away" by Strange Persuasion sent by Dominic Glynn. The Thameside Radio Good Bite Guide comes from Saigon Sal's Chinese take-away near Highbury and Islington Station. Alex interviews someone who is worried they might have been eating monkey brains and wants to inspect the kitchen!Mazzy calls the Curly Man from a call box and we hear the pips as her money runs out. Remember the pips? Dave gives us his interpretation of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony as only The Intrepid Birdman can. Lots of holiday postcards -  new names include John Henry, Biddy,  Dave Booth, Starr's Dad, John Simmonds, The Brentham Club, Martin Farley, Graham Lee of Mill Hill, PC of Hammersmith, Alan Dolby.  Al
