Ann and Amanda talk Lindsay Hubbard's (Summer House) pregnancy announcement, Ann's drug-induced kindness towards Something About Her patrons, and Katie Maloney's (VPR) defense of Ann on a popular podcast. Then the gals interview writer, comedian, and polite, kind boy, Max Kliman (27:03) about the many things angry Hollywood people have put him through -- one of which is another harrowing tale involving soup. Content warning: This interview includes discussion of miscarriage and pregnancy loss, and may be triggering for some listeners. The placenta is an incredible body part. It's the only organ grown temporarily, created during pregnancy and discarded after birth. It has the enormous job of supporting the growth of a fetus, protecting it from infection and inflammation. When something goes wrong with the placenta, it can result in the loss of a baby. For something that can be so devastating to expectant parents, miscarriages are incredibly normal. Of the 5 million pregnancies each year in the United States, about 1 million end in miscarriage, categorized as a loss before 20 weeks of gestation. About 20,000 pregnancies end in stillbirth during the later stages of gestation.Often, after a pregnancy loss, doctors tell parents that the cause is unexplained. This can lead to feelings of failure and guilt, even though pregnancy loss is almost always out of a person's control.Dr. Harvey Kliman, director of the Yale School of Medicine's Reproductive and Placental Research Unit, has dedicated his career to better understanding the placenta and its relationship to pregnancy loss. Dr. Kliman and his team recently analyzed 1,256 placentas that resulted in pregnancy loss. They learned that 90% of these losses could be explained by conditions such as a small or misshapen placenta.Dr. Kliman joins guest host Flora Lichtman to talk about his research, and the importance of studying the placenta as a way to better understand what leads to miscarriage and stillbirth.

Dr. Kliman also shines light on specific PRC tactics, including five different ways China engages in information manipulation. Finally, he highlights how the United States is working with key allies and partners. Dr. Daniel Kliman is the director of the Global Engagement Center's China Division. Previously, he worked in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, where he served as Senior Advisor for Asia Integration. He was the former Program Director and Senior Fellow for the Indo-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. He has also worked at the German Marshall Fund as a Senior Advisor with the Asia Program. Dan is an expert in Asia-Pacific strategy, with a particular focus on U.S. competition with China.

I talk with Dr Harvey Kliman about his research and medical opinion when it comes to the placenta, pregnancy loss/stillbirth, & reoccurring pregnancies. He is a research Scientist in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the Yale University of Medicine and the Director of the Reproductive and Placental Research Unit with the following Research Interests: Pregnancy Complications and losses, Autistic Disorder, Endometrium, and Infertility. Dr Kliman is the one who gave me some answers around Brody's death. He shed some light on what could have happened & how we prevent it from happening again. Without his placenta pathology report, I would still be going off of what my OB said, "he was perfect, this was freak, & it won't happen again." Implantation failure and recurrent miscarriage is rampant. And unfortunately, most patients are left without answers or direction. In today's episode, I interview Dr. Harvey Kliman MD, PhD, creator of the EFT test, otherwise known as the Endometrial Function Test. He walks us through what endometrial factors can work for or against us. Including but not limited to obscure infections, inflammation, endometriosis, timing of transfer, and dosages of hormones. The episode begins with an in-depth discussion of complex interplay between hormones and uterine receptivity, followed by the goods on the EFT. He also compares the other tests available for endometrial issues - the ERA and Receptiva and gives a candid and informed viewpoint on their efficacy. You'll Learn: The complexities of the endometriumEstrogen and progesterone's effect on the endometrium and its connection to failed implantationother factors that cause infertility What the EFT test is and why it is helpfulThe difference between the ERA, Receptiva and the EFT testing procedures Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! It may come as a surprise to you that your baby's life-sustaining organ, the placenta, is NOT routinely measured throughout pregnancy. It's as if this necessary organ is just expected to continue growing appropriately & no one bothers to make sure. No wonder placenta related issues (including small placentas) are a common cause of stillbirth! Fresh off the stage of the #bigPUSH2022 in Washington, D.C., where he proclaimed to bereaved parents "it is NOT the your fault", Dr. Harvey Kliman, Yale's World-Renowned MD, PhD, placenta expert is joining us to explain how the placenta can be measured with a simple ultrasound technique he & his father developed (there's even an instructional video & hand-out for providers on measuretheplacenta.org & an APP: Merwins EPV Calculator). There's no reason why healthy babies should continue to die if our country can add this tool to our provider's toolbox. If an issue is noted with the growth of our babies' placentas, then providers can take necessary steps to monitor our babies & deliver them early if needed. No more waiting to see what happens!

Stuart Kliman serves as the newly appointed Partner and Head of Building Industry Partner’s newly formed Center of Excellence (CoE) focused on human capital management. Building Industry Partners is the leading private equity firm in the building and construction industry, focused on helping companies create value not just for their customers and shareholders, but for their most critical stakeholder, their employees. In his role Kliman’s primary focus is helping BIP’s portfolio companies and the industry-at-large create “people-first” cultures that reinforce the holistic well-being of employees and their families while at the same time deliver better business performance and bottom-line financial results. Prior to joining BIP, Kliman was a founder and partner for 25 years at Vantage Partners, a mid-sized consulting and training organization specializing in biopharmaceuticals and healthcare. In addition to helping steer Vantage’s strategic direction and sitting on its management committee, at various times Kliman oversaw several operational functions, including human resources and marketing, and directly drove revenue for the firm. In this episode Tracy interviews Stu Kliman- consultant to the health ecosystem turned private equity Human Capital COE leader – on the unexpected connection between his current work and enhancing overall health and wellness. Tracy and Stu explore the ever-evolving boundaries of the health industry, Building Industry Partner’s vision for enhancing health and wellness within the building and construction industry, and their belief that investing in people is not only the right thing to do- it’s also a means to achieving organizational and financial success. Show Notes Building Industry Partners, a private equity firm focused on the building sector, believes firmly that there is an inextricable link between leadership’s ability to tap into the best in people and the overall success of an organization. Investing thoughtfully into an organization’s people is the right thing to do in and of itself in terms of helping enhance health and wellness through improving health benefits, increasing individual autonomy, and building financial stability and career resilience of populations. Building Industry Partner’s seeks to prove that in addition to these inherent benefits, investing meaningfully in people is a reliable method for generating world class business results. Building Industry Partner’s believes there are five key criteria for defining a strong employee value proposition that translates to financial wellness – Financial Security, Career Resilience, Advancement Opportunity, Engagement, and Wellness. People are the key to unlocking innovations needed to tackle today’s most complex industry challenges such as sustainability, talent attraction and retention, and responding to growing complexity within customer base. When it comes to enhancing health and wellness, collaboration is the difference maker - both on the front lines in how we interface with individuals and work in teams- and more broadly in how we approach complex challenges facing the country as a whole.
“The students are fascinated to see that someone who ordinarily they know behind the couch can be on the stand and try to influence social justice, and influence foster care systems, influence schools, churches and often corporations.” Episode Description: We begin by recalling Dr. Kliman's 92nd birthday request of inviting trainees to participate in his work with the Harlem Family Institute and the Harlem Psychoanalytic Institute. He presents clinical examples especially around the issue of giving voice to those who suffered trauma. His teaching includes demonstrating how an analyst engages with the legal system in order to seek justice for ignored victims. We also discuss his recent thinking on PTSD and the altruistic communicative aspects of otherwise individually disabling symptoms. We close with his sharing with us his precarious health, the impact of his Holocaust family history, and the usefulness of his current analysis. Our Guest: Gilbert Kliman, MD.

Ukens anbefalinger: Lars Erik Mangset: Jeg anbefaler en artikkel fra The Economist i sommer: «What if carbon removal becomes the new Big Oil?

David Kliman discusses navigating the current crisis and thriving in a challenging environment. When the Covid crisis hit, David Kliman, president of The Kliman Group, watched his business plans disintegrate. “The day before the lockdown, I had a full calendar — it was going to be a banner year,” he says. “A day after, I had an empty calendar.” In that way, he’s like many in the industry, who faced unprecedented difficulties as the pandemic hit. But instead of mourning his lost business or idly waiting for it to come back, he picked up the phone — reaching out to industry members to ask how he could help. In this episode of Eventful: The Podcast for Meeting Professionals, Kliman discusses what came out of those phone calls: The Events Industry Council’s APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force — an international team of industry thought leaders helping to curate and share accepted practices to help the industry recover. He also offers other tips for navigating the current crisis and positioning your business to meet the demands of a changed landscape for meetings and events. My guest on Episode 39 of Shattered Conception is Dr. Harvey Kliman who has, in addition to an M.D., holds a Ph.D. in cellular biochemistry from the University of Chicago. He is currently a Research Scientist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine and the Director of the Reproductive and Placental Research Unit with a special interest in infertility, pregnancy complications, pregnancy loss(es) and stillbirth. He has over thirty years of anatomic pathology training with particular emphasis in electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, endometrial and placental pathology. He has over ten patents, including the patent for the Endometrial Function Test® (EFT®)—“The soil test for the endometrium®” and “Method and system for determining placental volume.” His contributions in the field of placental research include the development of the “Kliman” method of trophoblast purification, research into the mechanisms of trophoblast differentiation and invasion, the role and genesis of syncytial knots, and more recently, the clinical utility of abnormalities in placental growth patterns, especially trophoblast invaginations and inclusions, to diagnose genetic abnormalities in pregnancy, including autism. We spoke at length before recording this podcast and thought we could begin this episode talking about the inability to become pregnant. What would you want a woman to know about her inability to get pregnant or sustain a pregnancy…where should she start to gather the needed information to see what is going on with her uterus? (This is where we discuss the different types of uterine lining tests, including the Endometrial Function Test®, "EFT®") There are approximately 2 million pregnancy losses a year in the USA. We are talking about the women who are pregnant but lose the pregnancy AND there are women who lose their pregnancy between 20-40 weeks gestation. (This is where we talk about the Estimated Placental Volume Test®, "EPV"® ) Dr. Harvey J. Kliman can be reached at 203-785-3854 or http://klimanlabs.yale.edu

Innovativeness: An Examination of Unexpected Ideas and Their Thinkers
On this episode of Innovativeness, BrandFirst talks with Laura Kliman, the Senior Flavor Scientist at Impossible and the person responsible for Version 2.0. With a doctorate in Organic Chemistry, Laura was working as a pastry chef in Chicago when she heard about Impossible on NPR. Appealing to what she considered the “trifecta of her concerns”, Laura relocated to California and became instrumental in the development of Impossible’s plant-based meat. We talk about the differences between versions 1.0 and 2.0, the definition of Heme, and how some people might think that Impossible is performing magic to deliver on their promise. Impossible’s plant-based products have challenged an entire industry and Laura really helps to break things down.
We continue our discussion with Prof. Andrew Kliman, dig deep into some econophysics critiques of the TSSI, Marx’s 3 system equalities, and Raya Dunayevskaya and the political history of the Marxist Humanism.
That's right! It's episode #100! It’s been over seven years since the first episode in April 2012. I’d like to thank all the listeners for listening to and supporting the show over the years - I couldn’t have kept it going without you all. This week we are excited to welcome back Prof. Andrew Kliman to the show, as Lexi and myself spill our thoughts on the TSSI series that concluded a few months past and we pick the good professors brain on a number of issues
My guest is Dr. Ann O’Neill. Ann completed her Master’s degree in Environmental Science in 2006, and her PhD in Natural Resource Science & Management in 2015. Excitedly anticipating the arrival of their 4th son in July of 2018 and were shocked to learn Elijah, no longer had a heartbeat at 39 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. Elijah was stillborn on his due date, July 2nd, 2018. They returned home from the hospital in desperate tears, bewildered, arms aching, and with a million questions. Three months after Elijah’s stillbirth, the autopsy report concluded that the cause of Elijah’s death was “unknown”. Unhappy with the insufficient answers to basic questions provided by the autopsy, Ann listened to a podcast interview of Dr. Harvey Kliman, a placental pathologist at Yale University. On this episode, Ann discusses learning that Elijah’s death was due to an extremely small placenta that could not provide the oxygen he needed to survive past week 39 of pregnancy. While Ann’s original plan was to continue teaching environmental science classes to undergraduate students, Elijah’s death was a watershed moment in her life. Elijah's death opened Ann’s eyes to the many unacceptable gaps in the world of prenatal care, stillbirth research, and basic answers for families asking why their baby died. Today, Ann is passionate about encouraging prenatal care providers to measure a baby’s placenta volume in utero to detect babies at high risk of stillbirth, and to help loss families pursue and hopefully find answers to the cause of their baby’s death. Ann can be reached by email: ann.ebert.oneill@gmail.com To learn more about Estimated Placental Volume (EPV) to measure placenta volumes during pregnancy: https://medicine.yale.edu/obgyn/kliman/placenta/epv/ To learn about having your baby’s placenta tissue reviewed by Dr. Harvey Kliman to investigate why your baby was miscarried or stillborn: https://medicine.yale.edu/obgyn/kliman/placenta/pregnancyloss/ Star Legacy Foundation is in Minnesota and are dedicated to stillbirth research.
Dan Kliman joins Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Jim Townsend to discuss the evolving nature of China’s relationship with Europe, how the Belt-and-Road Initiative is challenging the Transatlantic Partnership, and what the United States and NATO allies can do to counteract its regional and global influence. Dr. Kliman explains how China is dividing Europe and undercutting the crucial cohesion the continent will require to challenge China’s rise as an economic and strategic competitor. 5G is just one component in China’s drive to change the international model, legitimize autocracy, and put democracies on their back feet.
Wine Work. Taco Work. Writing Work. Welcome to the second in a series of FOUR podcasts celebrating the Virginia Festival of the Book! From March 16th to 19th you will hear from the country's best and brightest when it comes to food writing. Today's episode? Award-winning food author Todd Kliman, former critic for The Washingtonian, author of The Wild Vine, and a contributor to this year's Best American Food Writing series. Todd will be appearing at an event Sunday, March 26th at JMRL as part of that series. Event details are listed below. I first became aware of Todd's writing because of his Oxford American piece on Peter Chang which went viral and did much to promote that nomadic chef's mystique. But it was during Todd's 2014 presentation at the SFA Summer Symposium in Richmond, where he talked about his book The Wild Vine, that I knew I'd have to meet him somehow. The Wild Vine isn't just about grapes, but about identity, immigration, and overcoming fear to reinvent yourself. A truly American-born idea. Daniel Norton discovered the only true American grape, the Norton, way back in Jefferson's time. Norton Street, a 2-block long narrow lane in Richmond marks the location of Magnolia Farm where the discovery took place. His gravestone in Shockhoe Hill Cemetery lies forlornly in a forgotten corner. "I didn't write the book because I'm a lover of Norton...I like it...but I like it for what it seems to embody to me...I knew that this was a good story." Today accomplished vintner Jenni McCloud of Chrysalis Vineyard is Norton's champion, an expert in appreciating this often overlooked and misunderstood wine and the only transgender vineyard owner in America. Recognition for Norton and his grape are building. Developments are happening. Listen to learn more. The book is marvelous, such a great story, and it was a thrill to discuss it with him. Likewise, Todd's piece in the Best of American Food Writing 2016 is about way more than tacos and mezcal in Mexico. It's about democracy, his own sense of disorientation, then discovery, and the danger and sense of extremity of culture that permeates everything when you live on the edge of the volcano that is Mexico City. How does one bite of a beetle transport you back 400 years while at the same time showing you the future of foodstuffs? We talk about it. "You can tell a story and that will be interesting on its surface...but if there's going to be a connection...there has to be something for me to speak through...I have to be able to connect with it...to bond with it...so I can get into the deeper tissue of it and then write from out of that...my heart and my brain is entirely engaged." Most people don't even know what food writing is, assuming we're all either cookbook authors or critics. Which simply isn't the case. Food writing goes deep causing the writer to think, to consider, to connect. When you read a Yelp review or even a review from an esteemed critic, it's flat, consisting of their opinions and stars. A soundbite that doesn't do nearly enough to encompass the real work and passion dozens of folks have done to bring forth that meal to your plate. "I think a piece of writing should be an experience in its own right...when you read it, it stands alongside it, that experience of eating at the restaurant...But that's not how most people come at it...most people want the information (only)." The eating environment has changed as well, with fewer folks being "regulars" at restaurants. There's just not that many places for folks to meet face to face anymore and when they do, they're on their phones. Social media has changed food. It's changed how people connect on an elemental level. What is Todd doing to fix that? Stay tuned! Like Norton and McCloud, Todd is in the process of reinvention, refusing to be pigeonholed into the "food writer" label. He left his position at The Washingtonian and is expanding his horizons, including a new book which explores yearning, loss, memory, time, and the nature of joy called, "Happiness is Otherwise". Look for it soon. After this conversation? I can't wait to read it. "One of the things I find liberating about not being in the role of critic anymore is this constant assessing of what matters and what doesn't. What's relevant and what's not. I'm not interested in that. I'm interested in the ways that food connect people to other people. Or don't. It's also a way of erecting barriers. It has been. And continues to be." It was such a privilege to talk at length with one of my favorite food writers whose work I've followed for many years. Anyone interested in writing, literature, or who loves the deep questions in general, will get a lot out of this episode. Todd and I connected on so many levels, including our love of African literature, writing, our similar grief process, our parents, and the expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka. Multiple connections guarantee a fantastic conversation. Which this definitely is. The conversation went another hour after I hit stop. I hope it's the first of many. Enjoy! This week we talk to Professor Andrew Kliman, about the current economic crisis, and what Karl Marx would make of it all. Professor Kliman, is a Professor of Economics at Pace University and author of several publications on Marxian economics, including the books Reclaiming Marx’s “Capital”, and ‘The Failure of Capitalist Production: Underlying Causes of the Great Recession’. We talk of Marx's labour theory of value, the falling rate of profit, production for productions sake, and what Marx would think about the insights of the post-keynesian, Hyman Minsky. The Professor is a leading proponent of the Temporal Single System Interpretation of Marx's labor theory, which defends Marx’s cconomic theories against various claims of its inconsistency from other economists. I’m currently reading Das Kapital myself, so it’s a real treat to hear what one of the worlds foremost Marxists has to say about the current economic situation.
