Activist and organizer Roan Boucher details the unprecedented surge in anti-trans legislation across America and its connection to Christian Nationalism. Despite addressing these troubling developments, Boucher discusses sources of hope and resilience, pointing to mutual aid networks and Jewish spiritual practices. This compelling dialogue weaves personal experience with sharp political analysis. It's essential listening experience for anyone trying to understand our current moment. Boucher also addresses deep divisions within Jewish communities and stresses Jews need to work across divides to oppose antisemitism and assaults on human rights. A series of anti-trans measures and unscientific definitions of gender are amongst the flurry of executive orders issued by the U.S. president. In addition, Trump signed an executive order intended to bar transgender athletes from girls' and women's sports. Here in Canada, trans people and especially trans youth are facing mounting efforts by conservatives to dismantle the rights and progress they have achieved, and putting them at risk of harm. Travers is a professor of sociology at SFU, and the author of The Trans Generation: How Trans Kids (and Their Parents) Are Creating a Gender Revolution. They speak with Lorraine Chisholm.

When the pages of a book become a battleground for human rights, conversations like the one I have with Bill Konigsberg become not just relevant, but vital. Award-winning and openly gay, Bill Konigsberg has been on the frontlines, both as a sports writer for ESPN and now as a YA author facing the harsh reality of book bans. In an era where queer-themed literature is under siege, Bill's voice is a beacon for authenticity and representation, illuminating the importance of storytelling in the lives of queer teens and the broader community.Transitioning from the adrenaline-infused world of sports journalism to the heartfelt realm of YA fiction, Bill's tale is not just a career shift but a testament to courage and the power of living one's truth. He shares the intimate details of his journey, underscoring the impact that embracing his identity has had on his writing and ultimately, on readers who see themselves reflected in his characters, as well the life-threatening impact that books bans in Republican-led states can have on queer kids. It's a poignant reminder of the resilience required to navigate personal and professional landscapes that aren't always welcoming or safe for the LGBTQ+ community. The episode wraps with a focus on the future, not only for Bill but for all writers and readers in the LGBTQ+ space. We touch upon the collective effort of Authors Against Banned Books and the diverse challenges faced by authors across the spectrum of queer identities. Bill's insights and experiences reveal the multifaceted nature of storytelling in times of adversity, and his commitment to enriching young adult literature with queer narratives that inspire, validate, and empower. In this episode, Bill explains how he navigates the tides of change and censorship, and how he remains hopeful and tenacious in crafting stories that affirm queer lives.Recommended:Destination Unknown - Bill KonigsbergThe Music of What Happens - Bill KonigsbergOpenly Straight - Bill Konigsberg-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramPost.newsYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com **Artwork: Dovi Design **Music: Joystock

This year we've seen an aggressive push to implement anti-trans legislation across the United States. There are currently more than 400 active anti-trans bills across the country. Some legislation denies gender-affirming care to youth – and criminalizes those health-care providers that attempt to do so. Other bills block trans students from participating in sports and still others have banned books with trans content. These bills have at least two things in common. They all aim to make being trans harder in an already hostile society and they are being spearheaded by the far-right.Where does anti-trans sentiment come from? The enforcement of a gender binary likely has much to do with the preservation of white power. And, violence against trans people continues as a result. Is Canada better? What do things look like in Canada? Are we a safe haven or are we following some of the same trends?Recently, a petition signed by almost 160,000 people asked the Canadian government to extend asylum to trans and gender non-conforming people from nations in the West, previously considered safe.To get a better understanding of trans histories in Canada, we are joined by Syrus Marcus Ware, a scholar, artist, activist and assistant professor in the Faculty of Humanities and School of the Arts at McMaster University. He is a co-curator of Blockorama/Blackness Yes! and a co-editor of the best-selling Until We Are Free: Reflections on Black Lives Matter in Canada. We discuss the history of anti-trans and queer actions in Canada. We also speak about backlash and ways to move forward.

State legislatures have significantly advanced a record number of attacks aimed at restricting LGBTQ+ rights this year. Our guest this week points out that “the number one priority, without any ambiguity” of Republicans has been attacking trans people. Nearly half of the country could see health care bans for trans adolescents by May. This tidal wave of anti-trans legislation, which restricts gender affirming and medically necessary care, continues to have wide-ranging and deleterious impacts, especially on adolescents. Chase Strangio, who is transgender, is deputy director for Transgender Justice with the ACLU's LGBT and HIV Project and a nationally recognized expert on trans rights. Strangio joins WITHpod to discuss how politics has eclipsed healthcare in some cases, anti-transgender legislation being used as a gateway to broader government control and why conversations about trans people is often predicated on fear and confusion. He also talks about the ongoing political and legislative fights to protect bodily autonomy, gender expression and personal freedom.
