DescriptionThe Bach Six Solo Cello Suites are considered a staple for every budding cellist. But in Bach's day, the cello was not considered a solo instrument and these works were shelved for decades. Not until Pablo Casals came along. Take a minute to get the scoop!Bach Cello Suite No. 2 in D min. BWV 1008 Casals c/o YouTubeFun FactSince the earliest manuscripts copied by his wife Anna Magdalena Bach contain no markings as to the bowings, tempo, character, or articulation of the pieces, the suites have been reinterpreted in myriad ways by cellists around the world. One has to admire how the music speaks no matter how varied the approach. Nonetheless, certain cellists stand out for their Bach's music.About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer & actor living in Toronto. Ancient Views Of Death and the Resurrection

The only specific mention of what Resurrection looks like comes from the Book of Daniel. "And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever." Dan. 12:4. The Book of Revelation uses that image in John's vision of the Risen Lord. In Revelation 1:12-16 it says, "* Then I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me, and when I turned, I saw seven gold lampstands and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man,* wearing an ankle-length robe, with a gold sash around his chest. The hair of his head was as white as white wool or as snow,* and his eyes were like a fiery flame. His feet were like polished brass refined in a furnace,* and his voice was like the sound of rushing water. In his right hand he held seven stars.* A sharp two-edged sword came out of his mouth, and his face shone like the sun at its brightest." So why do the four Gospels tell a very different story of the Resurrection? Because the Risen Lord was not a vision. They described what they really saw. Why does bias get more attention than noise? And finally, Olivier’s favorite topic; how we can mitigate noise by using decision hygiene and actively open minded thinking. Olivier Sibony is a professor, writer and advisor specializing in the quality of strategic thinking and the design of decision processes. Olivier teaches Strategy, Decision Making and Problem Solving at HEC Paris. He is also an Associate Fellow of Saïd Business School in Oxford University. Olivier’s research centers on improving the quality of decision making by reducing the impact of behavioral biases. He is the author of numerous articles in academic and popular publications, including Before You Make That Big Decision, co-authored with Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman. Our interview with Olivier is, as I’m sure you will agree. absolutely mesmerizing. Learning about the extent of noise in our lives from Olivier and from the new book, is truly enlightening. As their cleverly crafted catchphrase says "wherever there is judgment, there is noise, and more of it than you think." Thankfully, the brilliant team of authors have included lots of ways to combat the noise around us. And we know that our discussion with Olivier is just the first of many that we will have around this groundbreaking topic. Behavioral Grooves strives to bring you insight and research from world-leading experts in behavioral science, like Olivier. And we do this without the use of paid advertising. They’re baaaaack….live concerts, that is. The great ‘cellist Amit Peled — heard in the opening of this segment playing Ennio Morricone's Love Theme from his score for Cinema Paradiso — is the founder and music director of a chamber orchestra called the Mount Vernon Virtuosi. A week from tomorrow, he will conduct the group and play as a soloist in a concert that marks the return to live events for the Candlelight Concert Society in Columbia. The 2pm concert will be held outdoors, at the Chrysallis in Merriweather Park's Symphony Woods, in Columbia, Maryland. Some COVID protocols will be in place: you'll have to wear your mask, you can’t bring your dog, and you have to sit with folks in your pod. But after more than a year of hearing concerts on Zoom, music lovers are delighted that in-person concerts are slowly making their way back to area stages. For ticket and location info, click here. Amit Peled joins us today on Zoom, just for this interview… Music heard on today's program (Amit Peled, soloist): Ennio Morricone: Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso(Amit Peled soloist, with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra, Darko Boutorac, conducting.) Weilerstein offers two movements of the suites as part of her “36 days of Bach,” where she shared one movement from each of the six suites, recorded with an iPad, for 36 days in a row. John Bargh, PhD is a Professor of Psychology and Management at Yale University. His name may be familiar because of the replication crisis, but there is so much more to John Bargh than a couple of experiments that were challenged during replication. John has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, chapters in over 30 books, and he founded The ACME lab at Yale in order to research the unconscious and implicit influences on social judgment, motivation, and behavior.  Over the years, his research has focused on embodied cognition effects, or how physical experiences (such as washing one’s hands or holding something warm or rough) influence metaphorically related social variables (like how physical warmth leads to feelings of physical warmth, for example).  Recently, he’s been focused on how social goals and political attitudes can be influenced by the satisfaction of underlying physical-level motivations; for example, how immunization against the flu virus influences attitudes towards immigration as ‘invaders’ of one’s ‘cultural body.’ We feel fortunate to have such a wide-ranging and fun conversation with John and we’re pleased to share his insights and humor with our listeners. BACH - Cello Suite No 1 in G Major BWV1007 - Mov 1-36

Bach's Cello Suite No I in G major is one of the most frequently performed and recognisable solo compositions ever written for cello. Yet it was virtually unknown for almost two hundred years until the Catalan cellist, Pablo Casals discovered an edition in a thrift shop in Barcelona. Casals became the first to record it and the suites are now cherished by musicians across the globe. The world renowned cellist, Steven Isserlis describes his relationship with the piece and why it still surprises and excites him. Fellow cellists Richard Jenkinson and Jane Salmon talk about the challenge of playing it and we hear from the Dominic Martens, a member of the National Youth Orchestra and his teacher, Nick Jones as they explore the piece together. Garden designer Julie Moir Messervy, describes how Yo-Yo Ma's recording inspired her to design The Toronto Music Garden and doctor Heidi Kimberly explains why she chose the piece for her wedding and why she believes the suite to have healing powers. While historian and author, Eric Siblin, reveals the extraordinary history of the suites and why some still argue that they was written by Bach's second wife Anna Magdalena. Producer Lucy Lunt.

Works for solo cello, and violin and piano duo performed by cellist Colin Carr, violinist Corey Cerovsek, and pianist Paavali Jumppanen.Bach: Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009Beethoven: Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Op. 12, No. 2Sometimes, what isn’t there is just as important as what is. It’s a concept that carries across multiple artistic forms—in the visual arts, we call it negative space; in music, it’s rest. In this episode, we examine two pieces that take different approaches to this “negative space.” First, Bach’s third cello suite. There are many reasons the cello suites number among Bach’s most incredible achievements, but his use of implied harmony is surely among the most remarkable. While he does include some multiphonics (two notes sounded simultaneously), more often he relies on the solo lines to suggest the contours of the harmonies—giving us just enough information that our ears fill in the harmonies. In Beethoven’s playful second violin sonata, the instruments switch places after the first iteration of the theme, with the violin playing the melody—only to pass it off to the piano a few bars later. This back-and-forth continues until the very end of the sonata. Keep your ears open—we won’t give away the surprise, but suffice it to say the playful one-upmanship keeps up right through the final bar.

Bach: Cello Suite No. 6 in D Major, BWV 1012 (September 17, 2006)Bach: Air on the G String, BMV 1068 (arranged for flute solo)(December 10, 2006)One of the interesting things about Bach, many singers will tell you, is that he likes to use voices like instruments. On the flip side, Bach also sometimes liked to write for instruments in ways that made them sound like voices, as in this week’s episode. In Bach’s suite, the cellist plays the roles of “soloist” and “orchestra” simultaneously, playing both the long, singing melodic lines and the underlying harmonies. Next on the program is one of Bach’s most famous melodies, in an arrangement for flute solo, played by flutist Paula Robison. The title “Air on a G string” actually wasn’t applied to the piece until much later, when a 19th-century violinist transposed Bach’s work down a whole step so that he could play the entire melody on the G string of his violin, the instrument’s lowest string, giving it the lush, romantic era sonority many of us have come to identify with the piece.

Bach: Cello Suite No. 5 in C minor, BWV 1011 (September 17, 2006)Schubert: Piano Sonata No. 16 in A minor, D. 845, Op. 42 (February 18, 2001)This week, we’ll be listening to two pieces for two very different solo instruments: piano and cello. First on the program, cellist Colin Carr will play one of the six solo suites Bach wrote for the cello. In these pieces, made up of solo melodic lines, harmony still plays a big role. In fact, while you’re listening you may notice your ear filling in notes that aren’t actually played, like connecting the dots on a page. In this suite, Bach gives the listener just enough dots to evoke those harmonies, while still retaining a melancholy sparseness in the music. After the delicacy of the Bach’s cello suites, the opening of Schubert’s A minor piano sonata seems downright bombastic. The first movement shuttles back and forth between declarative chords, like the opening, and longer, poetic lines, a familiar hallmark of Schubert’s style.
