Immediate neighbours of the Gaza Strip and the Westbank respectively, they suffer dramatic direct economic, political and social impact which is adding to pre-existing vulnerabilities.Jordan has a majority population of Palestinian origin, Egypt has a deep historic relationship with the Gaza Strip which was under the administration of Cairo until the Israeli occupation in 1967. Among other economic woes, Egypt is confronted with a steep reduction of income from the Suez Canal due to the Yemeni Houthi's war against commercial shipping in the Red Sea in the name of assistance to Hamas.Furthermore, Cairo and Amman were worried by US president Donald Trump's remarks who seemed to favour Palestinian migration from the Gaza Strip to other countries, especially Egypt and Jordan. In the beginning of March, Egypt presented her own Gaza reconstruction plan, endorsed by the League of the Arab States. Support came recently from French President Emmanuel Macron at a summit with the leaders of Egypt and Jordan in Cairo.The panel will discuss the effect and impact of the Gaza war on the MENA region, Egypt and Jordan in particular, and the possible Arab path forward. What role for Europe in this scenario?Amr Adly is an associate professor in the department of political science at The American University in Cairo (AUC). He worked as a non-resident scholar at the Carnegie Middle East Center, where his research centered on political economy, development studies, and economic sociology of the Middle East, with a focus on Egypt.  Adly has taught political economy at AUC and Stanford University. He is the author of cleft capitalism: the social origins of failed market-making in Egypt (Stanford University Press, 2020) and state reform and development in the Middle East: the cases of Turkey and Egypt (Routledge, 2012). He has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, including Geoforum, Business and Politics, the journal of Turkish Studies, and Middle Eastern Studies. Adly is also a frequent contributor to print and online news sources, including Bloomberg, Jadaliyya, and al-Manasa. Teheran và Washington cùng theo đuổi một giấc mơ : tránh được một cuộc khủng hoảng dầu hỏa. Trong một tuần lễ, giá dầu trên thế giới tăng thêm 9 % trước nguy cơ Trung Đông bị đẩy vào chiến tranh. Trước mắt Teheran không dám chận eo biển Ormuz nơi 30 % dầu khí Trung Đông đi qua. Washington thừa biết trước bầu cử tổng thống Hoa Kỳ, Israel tấn công nhà máy dầu của Iran làm tiêu tan mọi hy vọng đắc cử của Kamala Harris, ứng viên đảng Dân Chủ. Iran là một trong ba giếng dầu lớn nhất trên thế giới và cho dù từ 2018 dầu hỏa Iran bị Hoa Kỳ mạnh tay trừng phạt, năm 2023 mỗi ngày Teheran vẫn sản xuất hơn 3 triệu thùng dầu, (chiếm 3 % sản lượng của thế giới). Một nửa trong số đó là để phục vụ thị trường nội địa, với 86 triệu dân. Nửa còn lại là để xuất khẩu. Trung Quốc là khách hàng lớn nhất mua dầu hỏa của Iran.Sự kiện Teheran bắn 200 tên lửa sang lãnh thổ Israel trong đêm 01/10/2024 bắt buộc Nhà Nước Do Thái phải trả đũa với khả năng các cơ sở dầu hỏa của Iran có thể là mục tiêu tấn công, bởi dầu khí chiếm 41 % kim ngạch xuất khẩu của Cộng Hòa Hồi Giáo Iran. Dù vậy kịch bản hai nước thù nghịch trong khu vực là Iran và Israel lao vào một cuộc chiến đã không làm dấy lên một cơn « sốt dầu hỏa » trong những ngày tiếp theo đó.Mỹ muốn tránh « một cơn sốt dầu »Phải đợi đến khi từ Washington tổng thống Biden cho biết « đang thảo luận về khả năng Israel đánh vào các nhà máy dầu » của  Iran, giá dầu mới tăng thêm 7 % trong phiên giao dịch hôm 03/10/2024. Chưa đầy 24 giờ sau, chủ nhân Nhà Trắng cải chính rằng để trả đũa Iran, « Israel có nhiều phương án khác ngoài việc nhắm vào các cơ sở năng lượng » của đối phương. Trong phiên giao dịch ngày 07/10/2024 giá dầu trên thế giới vượt ngưỡng 80 đô la một thùng -thấp hơn 130 đô la/thùng khi Nga đánh Ukraina hồi tháng 2/2022.Giới trong ngành nói đến hiện tượng « thị trường dầu hỏa thế giới thêm căng » nhưng đồng loạt cho rằng trong hoàn cảnh hiện tại, không thể coi đây là một cuộc khủng hoảng dầu lửa như kịch bản từng xảy ra hồi thập niên 1970.Giám đốc tạp chí đầu tư Investir của Pháp, François Monnier trên đài phát thanh tư nhân Radio Classique giải thích :« Giá dầu hỏa đã được nhân lên gấp 4 lần khi nổ ra chiến tranh Kippour (năm 1973). Dưới tác động cuộc Cách Mạng Hồi Giáo Iran năm 1979 giá dầu nhân lên gấp đôi. Hiện tại dầu hỏa được cho là vẫn ổn định cho dù có tăng thêm 7 % trong tuần qua. Nhiều lý do giải thích khách biệt so với hồi thập niên 1970 :  một là giới trong ngành không tin rằng thế giới rơi vào cảnh khan hiếm dầu. Bản thân Ả Rập Xê Út chủ trương giảm bớt lượng sản xuất vì không tin rằng chiến tranh leo thang tại Trung Đông. Hai là ngay cả trong trường hợp tình hình ở Trung Đông có xấu đi thì đừng quên rằng thế giới có thể trông cậy vào dầu đá phiến của Mỹ. Trong một chục năm, thị phần dầu hỏa của Hoa Kỳ trên thế giới đang từ 10 % tăng vọt lên thành 20 %. Dầu hỏa của Mỹ giảm thiểu vai trò và ảnh hưởng của khối OPEC. Sau cùng kinh tế toàn cầu đang trong giai đoạn tăng trưởng chậm khiến mức cung cao hơn mức cầu ». Trên đài phát thanh Canada- Ottawa, chuyên gia về năng lượng Ivan Cliche, đại học Montréal cho rằng, bầu cử tổng thống Mỹ mới là yếu tố quyết định đối với thị trường dầu hỏa thế giới hiện nay :« Phản ứng của thị trường trong tình trạng bất an. Hoa Kỳ sắp bầu lại tổng thống. Mọi người đều biết là luôn có một mối liên hệ giữa giá xăng dầu tại Mỹ với tỷ lệ được lòng dân của ứng cử viên tổng thống trong chính quyền mãn nhiệm. Nếu giá dầu tăng mạnh, điều đó không tốt cho ứng viên bên đảng Dân Chủ là bà Kamala Harris. Tuy nhiên có hai yếu tố cần theo dõi chặt chẽ : một là liệu Israel có tấn công vào các nhà máy dầu của Iran hay không. Năng lượng bảo đảm gần 50 % thu nhập cho Iran. Đánh vào dầu hỏa và khí đốt của nước này có nghĩa là trực tiếp tấn công vào kinh tế và qua đó làm suy yếu Iran. Điểm thứ hai là thị trường đang hồi hộp chờ đợi xem rằng Teheran có đóng cửa eo biển Ormuz hay không. Đây là nơi từ 15 đến 20 % sản xuất dầu hỏa trên thế giới phải đi qua. Trong hai trường hợp này, tình hình sẽ thực sự trở nên phức tạp ».Trả lời báo Le Monde, chuyên gia về Iran, Thierry Coville, thuộc Viện Quan Hệ Chiến Lược của Pháp IRIS cho rằng, Teheran sẽ « chỉ đóng cửa eo biển Ormuz trong trường hợp bất khả kháng, vì biện pháp này sẽ có nhiều hậu quả tai hại với bản thân Iran » : Vịnh Ba Tư là một trong những cửa ngõ quan trọng của giao thương quốc tế, và là ngả duy nhất đưa năng lượng của Ả Rập Xê Út, Irak, Iran và cả Các Tiểu Vương Quốc Ả Rập Thống Nhất, cũng như Kowei ra thế giới bên ngoài. Ngay cả trong chiến tranh Iran-Iran thập niên 1980 eo biển Ormuz vẫn là vùng « bất khả xâm phạm ».Giới hạn từ chính sách cấm vận dầu IranTheo thống kê của tổ chức OPEC, khối các quốc gia xuất khẩu dầu hỏa, mà Iran là một trong số các sáng lập viên, năm 2023 nhờ xuất khẩu dầu hỏa, Teheran thu về 41 tỷ đô la. Cũng Iran năm ngoái thông báo đầu tư 18 tỷ đô la nhằm « nâng cao khả năng sản xuất » tại 6 giếng dầu ở các khu vực miền nam và tây nam. Iran đề ra mục tiêu « cung cấp thêm đến gần 400.000 thùng dầu một ngày ».  Vậy Mỹ và Israel có thể siết chặt thêm các biện pháp trừng phạt nhắm vào xuất khẩu dầu hỏa của Iran để cô lập thêm chế độ của giáo chủ Khamenei hay không ? Đầu tháng 2/2024 chính quyền biden đã ban hành thêm một loạt các biện pháp « trừng phạt kinh tế » nhắm vào Iran với lý do Teheran vi phạm lệnh trừng phạt của cộng đồng quốc tế, « rửa tiền và bán dầu hỏa cho một số đối tác có liên hệ với Trung Quốc, Nga và Syria (…) chủ yếu là để tài trợ lực lượng đặc nhiêm Quds của Iran ». Giáo sư Ivan Cliche, đại học Montréal không tin rằng trừng phạt và cấm vận dầu hỏa Iran là những công cụ thích hợp nhất :« Ban hành thêm lệnh cấm vận Iran vẫn là một công cụ Mỹ có thể sử dụng, nhưng rõ ràng là biện pháp này dù đã được áp dụng từ nhiều năm nay nhưng không đem lại hiệu quả mong muốn. Điểm chính ở đây là thị trường dầu hỏa thế giới đang trong tình trạng sản xuất dư thừa. Cung cao hơn cầu. Do vậy các thành viên trong khối OPEC muốn áp đặt quota để giữ giá ở quãng từ 80 đến 90 đô la một thùng dầu. Ngoài ra, nhiều nước sản xuất và xuất khẩu không thuộc khối OPEC -như là Mỹ cũng có khả năng cung cấp thêm dầu cho thế giới. Nói cách khác, về trung hạn, thị trường dầu hỏa thế giới không lo thiếu dầu. Ả Rập Xê Út có thể sản xuất thêm từ một đến một triệu rưỡi thùng dầu mỗi ngày để lấp vào chỗ trống. Nhưng trong những tháng sắp tới, giá cả trên thị trường còn tùy thuộc vào lượng dầu tiêu thụ mỗi ngày. Nếu cứ như hiện tại và không có điều bất ngờ xảy ra, thì tôi nghĩ là thị trường sẽ khá ổn định trong những tháng tới ».Cũng trên đài phát thanh Canada, giáo sư quan hệ quốc tế Miloud Chennoufi, học viện quân sự Canada đưa ra một giải thích mang tính chính trị cho thấy Hoa Kỳ hoàn toàn không mặn mà trước khả năng Israel đánh mạnh vào tử huyệt của Iran là xăng dầu, với hy vọng lật độ chế độ trong tay giáo chủ Khamenei, cho dù đây là giấc mơ mà Benjamin Netanyahu đã ấp ủ để cố giữ chiếc ghế thủ tướng Israel : « Có khả năng là Israel sẽ đáp trả bằng các biện pháp quân sự. Ngoài ra, đến nay các biện pháp trừng phạt Iran đã khá khắt khe. Siết chặt thêm trừng phạt thì sẽ bóp ngạt kinh tế của nước này và càng cô lập chế độ Teheran. Nhưng tình hình hiện tại đã rất nghiêm trọng. Sẽ nghiêm trọng hơn nữa nếu Israel và Teheran tuyên chiến và rất có thể là Mỹ sẽ can thiệp. Tuy nhiên Hoa Kỳ căn cứ vào một số yếu tố để xử lý hồ sơ Trung Đông. Kinh tế là một trong số những yếu tố đó. Tôi không nghĩ rằng tất cả mọi người chấp nhận để cho giá dầu hỏa tăng vọt tức là chấp nhận khả năng eo biển Ormuz bị đóng cửa hay giao thương bị gián đoạn ở Hồng Hải và kênh đào Suez do tác động của phe Houthi hồi giáo Yemen. Nói cách khác, nếu có chiến tranh với Iran, thì vế kinh tế sẽ trở thành một vấn đề khó giải quyết đối với Mỹ. Thêm vào đó nếu như Israel can thiệp vào Iran với mục tiêu lật đổ chế độ, thì điều đó làm gợi lại kinh nghiệm của Hoa Kỳ với Irak và đó là điều không hay bởi vì Mỹ cũng đã từng hứa hẹn xây dựng một chế độ mới cho người dân Irak và để rồi đã bị sa lầy tại quốc gia này ».Đầu tháng 2/2024 chính quyền Biden đã ban hành thêm một loạt các biện pháp « trừng phạt kinh tế » nhắm vào Iran với lý do Teheran vi phạm lệnh trừng phạt của cộng đồng quốc tế, « rửa tiền và bán dầu hỏa cho một số đối tác có liên hệ với Trung Quốc, Nga và Syria (…) chủ yếu là để tài trợ lực lượng đặc nhiêm Quds của Iran ».Jean Christophe Caffet, kinh tế trưởng cơ quan bảo hiểm ngoại thương của Pháp COFACE ghi nhận : Nga là bên duy nhất có lợi trong trường hợp eo biểu Ormuz bị đóng cửa, bởi đây là kịch bản duy nhất đẩy giá dầu lên cao và điều đó có lợi cho Matxcơva đang cần tài trợ chiến tranh Ukraina. Nhưng « ảnh hưởng của Nga tại Trung Đông khá hạn chế ».  Hơn một năm sau loạt khủng bố 7/10 trên lãnh thổ Israel, khủng hoảng ở Trung Đông đang lan rộng. Israel phong tỏa rồi oanh kích Gaza, mở thêm mặt trận tại Liban nhắm vào lực lượng vũ trang Hezbollah được Teheran yểm trợ. Cũng Israel tiêu diệt thủ lĩnh chính trị của phong trào Hamas khi Ismael Haniyeh khi ông này đang có mặt tại thủ đô Teheran và là khách mời của Cộng Hòa Hồi Giáo Iran đến dự lễ tuyên thệ nhậm chức của tân tổng thống Iran Massoud Pezeshkian hồi tháng 7/2024. Trong nửa năm, Iran đã hai lần trực tiếp tấn công Israel nhưng theo giới phân tích, Washington đang nắm giữ một phần chìa khóa để trả lời câu hỏi Trung Đông có bị đẩy vào chiến tranh hay không.Điều may mắn hơn cả trước mắt là ở thời điểm này, cả Iran lẫn Hoa Kỳ cùng muốn tránh một « cuộc chiến » Iran-Israel : Teheran biết tiềm năng quân sự không đủ để đối chọi với Nhà nước Do Thái và không chắc là chế độ có thể tồn tại nếu phải lao vào chiến tranh. Ở góc đài bên kia, Israel muốn « giải quyết dứt điểm » mối đe dọa Iran, một quốc gia được cho là « sắp » có vũ khí nguyên tử. Nhưng Israel không thể tấn công Iran nếu không có vũ khí của Hoa Kỳ.Ngót một tháng trước bầu cử tổng thống Mỹ chính quyền Biden bằng mọi giá cần khống chế đồng minh Netanyahu tránh đổ thêm dầu vào chảo lửa Trung Đông. Nếu thất bại và để nổ ra một cuộc khủng hoảng về dầu hỏa, giá dầu tăng gấp đôi, gấp ba so với hiện tại, thì coi như Joe Biden trả lại chìa khóa Nhà Trắng cho ứng cử viên Cộng Hòa Donald Trump.Hơn bao giờ hết, Teheran đang kỳ vọng nhiều vào Washington.

El presidente iraní, Ebrahim Raisi, murió el pasado domingo en un accidente de helicóptero. Raisi llevaba casi tres años en el cargo, al que accedió tras ganar las elecciones de junio de 2021 de forma contundente, obtuvo el 72% de los votos y dejó a su principal contrincante, Moshen Rezaee, a casi 60 puntos de distancia. Era muy cercano al líder supremo de la revolución, el ayatolá Ali Jamenei, y se hablaba incluso de él como posible sucesor para la máxima magistratura de la república islámica tan pronto como Jamenei, que tiene ya 85 años y múltiples problemas de salud, pasase a mejor vida. Después de muchas especulaciones, la muerte de Raisi se anunció oficialmente a primera hora del lunes. La televisión estatal informó que el presidente viajaba junto al ministro de Exteriores, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, en un helicóptero tras inaugurar una presa en la frontera con Azerbaiyán junto a su presidente, Ilham Aliyev. El helicóptero se dirigía a la ciudad de Tabriz y atravesaba en esos momentos una zona de orografía muy accidentada en el noroeste del país. La niebla y el mal tiempo hicieron el resto. Debido a un fallo técnico, el piloto perdió el control del aparato y se precipitó a tierra acabando con la vida de sus nueve ocupantes. Tras conocerse la noticia el líder supremo decreto cinco días de luto nacional y nombró a Mohammad Mojber, primer vicepresidente, como nuevo presidente interino hasta que se celebren nuevas elecciones. Estas se celebrarán en un plazo máximo de 50 días ya que así lo estipula la constitución iraní. La fecha que el Gobierno ha fijado es el 28 de junio, es decir, dentro de poco más de un mes. No quieren prolongar más de la cuenta este interregno ya que Irán se encuentra en un momento político muy delicado. En el exterior están tratando de capitalizar la guerra de Gaza y en el interior el régimen atraviesa desde hace años una crisis de credibilidad para amplias capas de la población. Es poco probable que la desaparición de Raisi y de Amir-Abdollahian alteren de forma significativa la política exterior del país. En esa política exterior hay que incluir el firme apoyo que prestan a Hezbolá y Hamas, su oposición a Israel y EEUU, y el desarrollo del programa nuclear que tantas preocupaciones provoca entre las potencias occidentales. De cualquier modo, que Raisi ya no esté supone un golpe inesperado para el Estado iraní y plantea interrogantes sobre la sucesión no sólo para la presidencia, sino especialmente para el líder supremo. Raisi era un clérigo y jurista islámico que formaba parte del círculo más próximo a Jamenei. Antes de llegar a la presidencia había estado a la cabeza del poder judicial y ejerció de fiscal general durante varios años. La oposición lo conocía como el “carnicero de Teherán” y, aunque era respetado por los sectores más conservadores, no levantaba pasiones. Su funeral no concitó la misma expectación que, por ejemplo, el del jefe de la fuerza Quds, el general Qassem Solemaini hace cuatro años cuando murió víctima de un ataque aéreo estadounidense en Bagdad. En aquel momento cientos de miles de personas asistieron al entierro y en Kerman, su ciudad natal, hubo una estampida que causó 50 muertos. No tenía Raisi el elemento heroico de Solemaini, pero, a cambio, poseía mucho más poder. Los iraníes recibieron la noticia con sorpresa. Estuviesen a favor o en contra de Raisi, todos esperaban que durase mucho tiempo. Unos lo celebraron, otros lamentaron su muerte, pero todos contienen la respiración ya que saben que lo que está en juego es el giro conservador que la república islámica dio hace tres años. Encontrar un sustituto para Raisi no será sencillo. Era un líder con unas características muy particulares y con una idea muy precisa de por dónde debía discurrir Irán en los próximos años. The Islamic State has taken credit for an attack that killed 84 people and left dozens wounded in Kerman, in southern Iran. The bombing was significant because it was on the anniversary of the assassination by the United States of Qasem Soleimani, who was the commander of the Iranian Quds force 1998 until he was killed on January 3rd, 2020 by a U.S. drone strike under the orders of Donald Trump. At the time, Soleimani was on his way to meet with the Prime Minister of Iraq and in fact he was killed in Iraq, near Baghdad International Airport.Souleimani was a popular figure for leading the Quds force and the fight against the Islamic State not just in Iran, but leading Iran's assistance against the fight in Syria.The January 3rd attack in Kerman is not the first IS attack in Iran, but likely the deadliest.We're joined today by Mazda Majidi, Iranian author, journalist, and anti-war activist to talk about why the US targeted Soleimani, why IS targeted Iran and the role Iran plays in the wider region.Mazda Majidi also joined CovertAction Bulletin in December of 2022 to discuss the protests happening in the wake of the death of Mahsa Amimi. The Holy Land was the destination for many Muslim pilgrims during the late medieval and early modern period. In addition to worshipping on Jerusalem's Haram al-Sharif, Muslim pilgrims in the Holy Land also visited important Christian holy sites, such as the Mount of Olives, the Tomb of Mary, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. With fada'il al-Quds (“Merits of Jerusalem”) pilgrimage texts serving as their guide, Muslims visited these places and joined Christian worshippers in contemplating the sacred. Fada'il al-Quds texts informed Muslim pilgrims of the blessings (fada'il) of Christian holy sites by citing Islamic traditions, such as Qur'anic verses, hadith literature, and Companions' sayings (athar), to sanctify each Christian site and to command Muslims to perform certain Islamic prayers there. While fada'il al-Quds texts extolled Christian holy sites, they simultaneously debated whether Muslims were permitted to enter churches in the Holy Land. Despite the debate on the legality of Muslim pilgrimage to churches and protestations against the practice by some conservative ‘ulama', the fada'il al-Quds corpus, along with travelogue literature, reveals that Muslims increasingly visited churches, shared sacred spaces, and even participated in Christian ceremonies into the Ottoman period. Fadi in this interview and his work provides a broad historical sketch of Islamic pilgrimage to Christian holy sites and demonstrates that Muslims in the Holy Land shared sacred spaces with Christians in Jerusalem for centuries before the onset of the modern era.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/jerusalemunplugged. Victors write history, as the old cliché goes. Over the past 5 centuries, European powers have fanned out across the world, conquering entire continents and writing self-serving accounts of those conquests while diminishing the merits of the conquered civilizations in order to justify their own depredations. Palestine has been no exception to that rule. Today we speak with Professor Salim Tamari, a Palestinian historian based in Ramallah, whose trailblazing work has illuminated the history of Palestine and the Levant prior to British and Zionist occupations from a perspective that is largely absent from western narratives. More specifically, we discuss his book The Year of the Locust, an eloquent chronicle of the transition period that saw the end of the Ottoman empire in the Levant and the arrival of western occupiers through the revealing lens of a rare personal diary kept by a young soldier fighting in the ranks of the Ottoman army. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is vowing to crush the presence of the Kurdish militant group PKK in Iraq. But as the Turkish military closes in on the group, some analysts predict its fighters could turn to Iran, with implications across the region. Turkish forces, backed by jets and drones, are driving the PKK Kurdish militant group from its bases across Iraqi Kurdistan. For decades, the mountainous region has provided the PKK a sanctuary to launch attacks in its battle for greater minority rights across the border in Turkey. With Erdogan claiming to have the support of local Iraqi Kurdish forces, the PKK's once deemed impregnable headquarters in the Qandil mountains is now the target of Turkish troops.  "The politicians have to speak with symbols," said Aydin Selcen, the former head of Turkey's consulate in Iraqi Kurdistan. "When you say Qandil is our ultimate target or aim, whatever, it means that the ultimate step is to stop the PKK from existing altogether." Mountain headquarters The PKK bases in the Qandil mountains border Iran, a rival of Turkey. As the Turkish military steps up its offensive, some analysts suggest the PKK could turn to Iran for support. Despite having its own restive Kurdish minority, Tehran has in the past found common ground with the PKK, whose influence extends to Iraqi and Syrian Kurds. "Iran supported PKK in the 80s and 90s very strongly," says Huseyin Bagci, president of the Foreign Policy Institute, a research organisation in Ankara. "And now when Russians are out of the scene, not so strong, and probably Iran will take their place and the PKK and PYD, of course, they will try to use PKK as a leverage in their relations with Turkey." Tehran has developed close links with armed groups across the region. Turkey threatens to dash Swedish, Finnish hopes of quick NATO entry The escaping Russians finding a better life in Turkey "We don't know relations with Iranian revolutionary guards or the Quds forces relations with the PKK. As they have connections with every armed group in the area, they should have some sort of communication with the PKK as well," says Selcen. Iranian-backed Iraqi militia like the PMU already have contacts with groups linked to the PKK. "Right inside the Iraqi border in Sengal, Sinjar area, the PMU, and YBS the PKK affiliate in the area, they have friendly relations, or they depend on each other, perhaps," says Selcen. "So, in order to survive, all these local actors will need bigger actors than themselves like Turkey, Iran, or global powers like the Americans, the United States," he added. Undermining US forces In Syria, Kurdish forces linked to the PKK cooperate with American forces in the war against the Islamic State group. For Tehran, which backs the Damascus regime, deepening cooperation with the PKK offers the opportunity to undermine the American presence in Syria. "Tehran and Ankara are very pragmatic. They are aware of the very big differences in Syria in the Caucasus and other parts of the world," said Zaur Gasimiov, a senior research fellow in the history department at the University of Bonn. But any Iranian cooperation with the PKK will involve a careful balancing act, says Gasimiov. "I can imagine that the ties between PKK and Tehran would be staid, and maintained, and maybe boosted, but I can't imagine that Tehran would overplay, become a promoter of the PKK or supporter in the region, jeopardising its relations with Ankara. "They learned to cooperate but being aware of the differences." Relations between Turkey and Iran are often characterised as a combination of competition and cooperation. Iran's battered economy relies heavily on Turkish trade – a point Erdogan is likely to stress in his expected visit to Tehran in the coming weeks.

The Night Journey (Arabic: الإسراء‎, al-isrāʼ) is the 17th chapter of the Quran, with 111 verses. It is about Isra and the Children of Israel. This sura is part of a series Al-Musabbihat surahs because it begins with the glorification of Allah. Regarding the timing and contextual background of the supposed revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), it is an earlier "Meccan surah", which means it is believed to have been revealed in Mecca, instead of later in Medina. Q17:1 The transportation of Muhammad to "the farthest Mosque". Main article: Isra and Mi'raj Al-Isra, Ayahs of 78 and 79 on top of Nimavard madrasa's entrance tilling, Isfahan, Iran. This surah takes its name from the first verse, which tells the event of the Isra, the transportation of Muhammad during the night from the Great Mosque of Mecca to what is referred to as "the farthest Mosque". The exact location is not specified, although in Islamic tradition[1] this is commonly taken to be the Noble Sanctuary (Temple Mount) in Jerusalem. Some scholars disagree about this (see Isra and Mi'raj). While the city of Jerusalem (or al Quds) is not mentioned by name anywhere in the Qur'an, it is identified in various Hadith.[citation needed] The first verse refers to Mohammed being taken from the 'Sacred Mosque' to the 'Farthest Mosque': Glory to (Allah) Who did take His servant for a Journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest Mosque, whose precincts We (God) did bless,- so that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the One Who heareth and seeth (all things). Q17:8 Hell Verse 17:8 refers to hell and states that those who reject the faith will be punished: It may be that your Lord may (yet) show Mercy unto you; but if ye revert (to your sins), We shall revert (to Our punishments): And we have made Hell a prison for those who reject (all Faith). However, it also states that Allah is merciful and could forgive. It also refers to the hereafter and states that there is a punishment for not believing in it (Verse 7:10): And to those who believe not in the Hereafter, (it announceth) that We have prepared for them a Penalty Grievous (indeed).
