However, "From Author to Authority" opened my eyes to an entirely new level of possibilities! Paul McManus' deep understanding of both the financial industry and the intricacies of LinkedIn's platform shines through every page. Boy has that changed. In his book, From Author to Authority, McManus gives us one example after another of how financial advisors are seeing a clear ROI from their use of LinkedIn. His example in Chapter 8, Strengthening Your Impact, is a perfect example. I have learned from and benefited from Paul's coaching on LinkedIn. Today I am interviewing Bill Cates. How can you make good choices in your own business and how can you share what you're doing with others so they want to refer your business? How do you do that? Bill said: "And so, the last thing you want to hear from a client or even an influencer is are you still taking on new clients? You want to make sure that these people know that you're never too busy to see if you can be a resource or be of help to other people. 'Never too busy to see' - now use those words to see on purpose because number 1 - it's got to be a good match, right that person may or may not be a good candidate for the work that you do for all kinds of reasons and so you're never too busy to see, to explore, to have the conversation. If it fits great, if it doesn't, well, you don't want to take somebody on who's not a good fit." Bill is an expert on referability. He's been consulting with financial advisors and other business professionals about how they can be inspiring and referable to their community so that folks want to share what it is that you're doing right with other people. This week on The Massimo Show Rod sat down with an internationally recognized client-acquisition expert, author, and speaker - Bill Cates.  Bill has delivered his business-growth message to over 300,000 professionals, small business owners, and salespeople across 5 continents; helping them increase revenue without increasing their marketing budget. Bill is the author of four popular books:  Get More Referrals Now, Don't Keep Me a Secret, Beyond Referrals, and Radical Relevance. Bill Cates' client-acquisition system has been featured in such publications as Success Magazine, Entrepreneur Magazine, Selling Power, the Huffington Post, and The Wall Street Journal.  His own business's success has been featured in Money Magazine. Bill was born and Raised in Silver Springs, Maryland just outside of Washington, DC. While attending the University of Maryland he was a drummer in a rock n roll band who turned professional after college, even touring the country after he finished graduate school. While they were fairly successful Bill knew enough to realize he didn't want to play at Holiday Inns for the rest of his life.  After working for American Airlines in customer service he got the itch to own his own business.     A woman was selling her cookbook at a "pick your own strawberry" farms.  She stole all his ideas and he was not compensated for it.  He thought “I could do better than this” so he identified 1500 pick your own strawberry farms around the county and got an offer to write a cookbook and sell it to the farmers.  The first year he sold 15000 copies of the book.  He moved on to an apple and honey cookbook.  It was a niche for the farmers.  Bill was selling around 80000 copies of his cookbooks a year.  He started selling in kitchen stores, gourmet shops, and grocery stores.  He then moved on to writing specialty cookbooks for equipment manufacturers.  He wrote for Weber grills, a smoker company, a cookie cookbook for American Greeting Cards.  He created this niche of smaller cookbooks.  He built the business until it was saleable and publishing his cookbooks was going great.    They say liberal arts majors make good entrepreneurs because they learn how to learn and teach.   Bil sold several businesses and was looking for the next thing to do.  A friend of his said “you should be a professional speaker” so he started hanging out at the National Speaker Association.     After trying his hand at running a book publishing company he discovered his passion for speaking and teaching other entrepreneurs.    It didn't matter if Bill was getting gigs for his band, soothing ruffled feathers of airline clients, or connecting with farmers over a great recipe - he was learning to make real connections. This led to Bill's niche - referral marketing.  Bill believes in the power of multiplying your best clients.     “It doesn't cost money to do that,” Bill notes.  “What I learned is not only about referrals but about introductions.  Make sure you are getting introduced to the people who will give you referrals.  Referrals and introductions work because of borrowed trust.  Make sure to have a Value Check-in.  This is when you check-in in along the way so your client knows the value we are bringing.  To see that we are exceeding their expectation because most businesses don't check in enough.   When you check-in and ask how do you think we are doing? When you bring that openness to checking in on a regular basis, that is the beginning step for asking for an introduction.  It solidifies the connection.”    Rod and Bill go on to discuss the delegation of 5 things that will free you up to do the things that need to be done:    The sales division is handled by a referral network and reputation. Marketing by speaking in key conferences, newsletters, blogs. Reputation building and maintenance.  Run by his team. Personnel- marketing run by his team.  Operations use CRM.   Finance has an accounting team and book-keeping service  Bill and Rod end with some helpful information on how to multiply your best clients in five steps and more about Bill's books Beyond Referrals and Radical Relevance

Bill Cates is an internationally recognized client-acquisition expert, author, and speaker who motivates others to take action with proven strategies.  A successful entrepreneur, Bill started and sold two book publishing companies. Turning his attention to help other businesses grow, Bill has written four best-selling books: Get More Referrals Now, Don’t Keep Me a Secret, Beyond Referrals and Radical Relevance. Bill is also somewhat of an adventurer. He has trekked through the Himalayas of Nepal and the Andes of Peru. He has lived on a houseboat in Kashmir, India, climbed Machu Pichu, reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, camped in Arctic Circle… and Bill has toured the country as the drummer in a rock and roll band.   Most passionate about I’ve been in business for 40 years, always in marketing and in growing businesses. I built two book-publishing companies and sold both in 1989. Then I got into the business of writing, speaking, coaching, and helping other entrepreneurs build their businesses. I love writing. I plan to write a book every year now for the next five years. Today I also enjoy doing a lot of videos. Bill’s career and the story of the WHWE community I published cookbooks. I started when I wrote my own book. I worked for American Airlines, so I wrote a book about airline careers and started selling it a bit by myself. I was using direct mail, mail orders—this was long before we had the internet. Then a woman asked me to help her self-publish a cookbook, so I did that. I realized that cookbooks were a really good business. People love to read cookbooks, and not only for cooking. They enjoy following the process of preparing a dish. People also collect cookbooks. So, I borrowed $40,000 (which was a huge amount for me) from my father. I came back with several cookbooks that we sold in cooking stores, kitchen stores, and gourmet product stores. I published 45 cookbooks throughout the time I had my business. After nine years, I discovered that I didn’t really have a passion for what I was doing. I was looking for the next thing. A friend of mine told me, “You have built up a lot of knowledge, you’ve got a lot of experience, and you can help other business owners. You can write, you can speak, you can consult, you can coach.” I never really thought about that and I slowly got into it. I started helping some clients. In 1995 I began writing my first business book. It was called Unlimited Referrals and it was about how businesses can create more word of mouth. It’s not available anymore. My most recent business book is Radical Relevance, which is about how to cut through the sea of noise that the internet creates. Creating word of mouth is more relevant now than ever. You need to have the right mix of marketing and sales. Bill’s best advice for entrepreneurs The second rule in my book, Radical Relevance, is to give your customers or clients a seat at the table. What I mean by that is to not ever develop a product or service or any marketing or sales messages without first talking to your customers or clients. We think we know what’s in their heads and hearts, and to some degree we do. We think we have empathy for them but there is nothing like talking with them. What happens is that we start learning things and getting phrases and words and expressions that we can use and that we wouldn’t have thought of. One of the great questions to ask our clients is, “What do you value about what we do and how would you describe to other people what we are doing?” When I asked that, one of my clients said, “You make asking for referrals as natural as breathing.” Biggest failure with customers I’ll give you two. The first one was my partnership in the book-publishing company. It wasn’t a huge failure but I learned a lot from it. When you are getting married, for example, you get to know someone for a few months or a few years....

Of all the sales and marketing strategies you might adopt, there is only one strategy that will allow you to increase your revenue without increasing your marketing budget – and that is through multiplying your best clients.  Bill Cates started, built, and sold two successful book publishing companies. Bill is now the founder and president of Referral Coach International and works with businesses who want to multiply their best clients by adopting proven processes to generate more purposeful word of mouth, referrals, and introductions from advocates.  He is also the author of three best-selling books: Get More Referrals Now, Don’t Keep Me a Secret, Beyond Referrals and Radical Relevance. In this episode, Bill shares his process on how he helps people bridge that gap of how do we become appropriately proactive without, again, looking needy or pushy.   “I believe that serving the heck out of clients will create incremental growth and we need to do that. But if we have ways to leverage, to promote introductions, then we can create exponential growth.” – Bill Cates   Why you have to check out today’s podcast: Discover the #1 key to acquiring more RightFit clients … and the real reason why your value proposition falls flat) Learn how to get more referrals without asking (and ask without looking desperate) Learn simple steps to maximize introductions, and create advocates for your business   Learn More about the 3X Value Growth™ Model Go to www.3xvaluegrowth.com/model     Episode Takeaway: Typical symptoms of that problem that you see prospects, clients, experiencing and to make them realize that they have this problem? Sometimes the gap is they’re not being purposeful enough. They promote the possibility of introductions, but they don’t really ask. They don’t want to look aggressive, needy, pushy.
