Black mental health matters is a rallying cry for identifying and dismantling the healthcare disparities that persists within the community. The lack of cultural competency, humility, relativity, gatekeeping within the profession, mistrust due to historic as well as present unethical and racists practices informed by implicit and explicit bias, and discriminatory systems are a few reasons why the health care system needs an overhaul. The mental health system must be willing to look into the proverbial mirror, accept the reality of the reflection, make amends, and make changes in order to provide trauma informed and therapeutic spaces of safety for African Americans. Fannie Lou Hamer asked: "Ain't I A Woman?" and that question resounds today as many African Americans are still asking, "Ain't I human?" The objectification and dehumanization of African Americans is one aspect that lies beneath the systemic mental health disparities that persist in communities of color. Not being viewed as human but as objects/commodities did not end with slavery, but persists and informs some of the mental health practices and policies that displace African Americans at society's margins. As a result, our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health represents the collateral damage of a system driven by this insidious ideology. Tune into the podcast via www.talkingwithdrtoy.com.

In this episode, the hosts get down and personal as they explore the depths of mental illnesses in our communities. Too often we have ignored our mental states of mind. In our communities it's almost forbidden to talk about mental health. You're met with so many stigmas and criticisms and not enough care and encouragements. How many times have you been called crazy because you considered therapy? How many times have you been disregarded as just seeking attention? For black men it is even worst. In today's society, black men are taught not to have feelings or at least not to share them. Black men are criticized as being weak and weak minded. Because of this stigma, many mental illnesses in black men go untreated, unacknowledged, and often leads to suicide. We hope everyone is encouraged to face those dark moments by bringing them to the light. We must not continue to people who are in mental distress. Mental illness is just as real in black men as it is in everyone else.

with everything that has been going on within the Black community we tend to lose sight of what matters most to us: our mental health. everything that happens externally can potentially come in between what we are going through internally. at the end of the day it is important to put yourself first no matter the stigma, no matter what's going on.

Black Mental Health Matters, but historically, it's always been a neglected conversation, not only amongst the community, but within the family. I have definitely seen the wear and tear it causes when issues aren't discussed, and problems aren't addressed. This mini-series within the Podcast will feature family members talking about our own challenges with mental health, and how these conversations among us can bring about healing within our families. I'm Jamaican on both sides of the family, so culturally, that carries its own weight for how mental health is discussed, and that's why I feel this is significant, amongst many other reasons. Part one features my Uncle from my Father's side of my family, Kwame Barrett, who is the 2nd youngest of 5 siblings (all Brothers), and him & I share a very unique relationship that has seen him be a father figure for me. There has been much left unsaid since the untimely passing of his Mother & my Grandmother, Valrie Barrett, and we touch on that, amongst many other topics revolving our family, in hopes that others can start having the conversations in their own homes.

Mental Health in the black community is in desperate need of attention. Traumatic events have been broadcasted all over social media and television, and we are not okay. Seeing someone with the same color skin as yours treated less than human should not be the norm nor the expected, but for my people, it is. So, today I have a special guest , life and Relationship Strategist, Marshaun O., to inform how to notice signs of a mental health issue within yourself or someone else, and how to respond. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
On this episode of Love.Me, we discuss self reflection as it relates to self awareness and perspective along with lessons that we've learned along the way.
Black Americans have spent centuries working to convince others of their humanity and right to live. And yet, these last few weeks have taken a particularly devastating toll on the Black community. Deaths from COVID-19, a disease that has disproportionately killed people of color because of chronic inequalities in our healthcare and economic systems, surpassed 100,000. Breonna Taylor and George Floyd became the latest names added to an extensive list of Black individuals who died in the hands of police. And many of the protests following these murders were met with a militarized police presence and further police brutality.rnrnThe limited access to coping resources during this period of excessive stress is endangering Black lives even further. Black people are over seven times more likely to live in areas with limited access to mental health care. There is a dire shortage of Black mental health providers, and Black Americans are 20 percent more likely to report serious psychological distress.rnrnBlack mental health matters. In a community where discussion of mental health is already largely taboo and stigmatized, it is dire that we address mental health needs and provide resources and practices for surviving through this triggering time.
