In Japan, politeness and formality go hand in hand, shaping interactions in ways that might feel unfamiliar to people from more casual cultures like the United States, Australia, or Canada. While some European countries may find Japan's structured approach more familiar, many Western visitors are surprised by just how much etiquette matters—especially in business and official settings. One of the most formal experiences I had in Japan was accompanying Australian Ambassador John McCarthy when he presented his credentials to the Emperor. It was a grand occasion, starting with a waiting room at Tokyo Station, followed by a horse-drawn carriage procession, and attended by a senior Japanese Cabinet minister. Every movement—walking, standing, speaking, even sitting—was carefully choreographed. The level of formality was truly something to behold. Surprisingly, my second most formal experience wasn't at a government event, but with Osaka fishmongers. These business leaders, who buy a lot of Australian seafood, took the introduction of Ambassador Dr. Ashton Calvert very seriously. It was a powerful reminder of Japan's deep respect for hierarchy and tradition. But formality in Japan isn't just reserved for official events—it's part of everyday interactions. I once attended a meeting with the Vice-Governor of Osaka, and his upright, composed posture stood in stark contrast to my Australian guest, who sat back and relaxed. It was a clear example of how different cultural norms can sometimes be misinterpreted. Business meetings in Japan often take place in grand rooms with large chairs spaced far apart, making conversations feel a bit formal and distant. Foreigners might instinctively move closer when demonstrating a product, which can be a breach of etiquette—but a quick apology helps smooth things over. Japanese politeness also extends beyond meetings. A small but meaningful gesture, like walking a guest all the way to the elevator instead of just to the door, is a sign of respect. These thoughtful details are woven into everyday life in Japan, though they might not always be obvious to visitors. For anyone doing business in Japan, embracing formality is key to making a good impression. While foreigners won't be expected to act exactly like locals, showing an effort to follow cultural norms goes a long way in earning trust and respect. And after business hours? That's when Japan's love for informality shines, offering a welcome balance to the day's structured interactions.

According to Beyond Blue, on average, one in eight men will experience depression and one in five men will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives. As we move into November, we are taking some time to focus on Men's Mental Health. In this week's new episode, men's mental health advocate Nick Bracks shares his journey of depression, addiction, and obsessive tendencies from the perspective of a patient with our Ambassador Dr. Michelle Woolhouse. Together they discuss how certain behaviours can be masking men's mental health – particularly anxiety and depression. They talk of the importance of taking micro-steps, meeting patients where they're at, and the impacts of cultural and societal expectations on boys, teenagers and men, who are often raised to avoid exploration and expression of deep feelings. Nick shares the steps he took that helped him find balance again in his own life, as well as advice both for men experiencing mental health challenges and the practitioners who support them to create a blueprint for long-term positive mental health that can help men navigate their journey from depression to dynamism and vitality. About Risa Gold MD and Miracle of Help: Risa Gold MD, DLFAPA is a board-certified Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist in Cold Spring Harbor, NY. She graduated Cum Laude from Harvard, and earned her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Gold completed a residency in Psychiatry at Payne Whitney Clinic, New York Hospital, Cornell and a Fellowship in Child Adolescence Psychiatry at North Shore University Hospital. After serving as the President of the Greater Long Island Psychiatric Society, Dr. Gold was awarded Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Gold has been in private practice since 1987. After her son returned from a medical service outreach trip in Sierra Leone, he alerted her to the pressing need for health care services in these remote and vulnerable villages. Dr. Gold started MOH USA, Inc to raise funds for a community-led project that would comprise a hospital complex and several small businesses to support it. She is married to Dr. Kenneth Gold & has raised four children. Miracle of Help is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit using a community-led development model to help communities mobilize and design solutions that address their overall social and healthcare needs. Sierra Leone has the second highest infant mortality rate in the world. Inspired by firsthand accounts of the poverty and lack of medical services for pregnant women in eastern Sierra Leone, Miracle of Help (MOH) is helping the community build a Maternal Child Health Post (MCHP), for safe childbirth and pre- and post-natal care. The center is located in the village of Ngolahun, a village of slightly over 2,000 people, with no electricity or running water. Four smaller villages within walking distance (total population 2,000) will also receive services from the MCHP. During our monthly pop-up clinics our doctors have diagnosed some form of malnutrition in 80% of the children they see (see photos). As of the end of May 2022, we established two malnutrition clinics for severe and moderate acute malnutrition for children under the age of five. Our staff was trained by clinicians from Project Peanut Butter & Partners in Health, and both clinics have been certified by the Sierra Leone government. Since the inception of the clinics, twenty-five children have been rescued from malnutrition and their mothers given jobs selling soap to support them. Currently, twenty-seven children are enrolled in the two clinics. The mothers learn how to make Bennimix (provided by MOH), a blend of nutritive food substances to feed their children. Miracle of Help's fundraising efforts to establish a safe birthing center / women's health clinic in Sierra Leone were recognized by Ambassador Dr. Francis Kaikai at the Consulate of Sierra Leone in NY city, December 3, 2018. Ambassador Dr. Francis Kaikai appears in the center of this photo along with the Board of Directors of Miracle of Help.

A former Doraville police officer who is accused of killing 16-year-old Norcross resident Susana Morales is now facing additional accusations that he allegedly broke into a Snellville family's home in 2019 and committed burglary. Snellville police filed a first degree burglary charge against Miles Bryant last week. Police initially had trouble in identifying a suspect in the case, but that changed around the same time that Bryant was arrested last month in connection with Morales' murder. The Snellville burglary is the latest crime that Bryant has been accused of committing. Gwinnett police charged him last month with false report of a crime and concealing the death of another person, and later added felony murder and kidnapping, in connection with the death of Morales, who disappeared and was killed last July. Gwinnett police also accused Bryant last month of attempting to break into a woman's home in 2018 by climbing in through her window, and of attempting to enter another woman's residence in December 2022. A Snellville police report shows the burglary at the center of the newest accusations happened at a home on Windsor Lane on May 26, 2019. Bryant was already in the Gwinnett County Jail on the charges related to Morales' death when he burglary charge was filed. Gwinnett police have not ruled out the possibility that Bryan could face additional charges related to the 2018 and December 2022 incidents that they are currently investigating. For the second time in a less than a week, the state Senate shot down legislation Monday aimed at legalizing sports betting in Georgia. While 30 of the 56 senators voted in favor of Senate Resolution 140, it fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass a constitutional amendment. Last week, the Senate defeated a second sports betting bill that did not require changing Georgia's Constitution to bring online sports betting to the Peach State. On Monday, Senator Bill Cowsert, an Athens Republican, the chief sponsor of Senate Resolution 140, argued the constitutional route was the best way to go because it would have let Georgia voters decide whether to legalize sports betting. But Senator Marty Harbin a Republican from Tyrone, said it would be irresponsible for senators to pass the issue to voters because they do not have access to the same information as the Senators. Harbin also opposed legalizing gambling because of its potential to lead to addictive gambling. The resolution's supporters pitched it as a way to create a needs-based scholarship program in Georgia to supplement the HOPE Scholarship program, which is based on merit. Under the legislation, half of the state's share of the proceeds from sports betting would have gone to needs-based scholarships. The loss of the underlying constitutional amendment as well as the defeat of last week's Senate bill left supporters of sports betting with just one remaining option. A House bill legalizing sports betting without a constitutional amendment was pending in the House Rules Committee on Monday and subject to a vote sending it to the House floor. Ambassador Dr. Michael Oren: solider, diplomat, ambassador, politician, author, journalist, opinion leader. Michael was Israel's ambassador to the US for four years until 2013, during the fraught years of allies who felt a personal enmity to one other, President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu. Born into small town upstate New York in 1955, young Michael swapped the wealth and confidence of post-war America for a front seat in what he calls the nation of miracles. His childhood influenced by his father and uncle's US Army service in World War II and the terrible discovery of what the Nazi enemy had done to the Jews of Europe. But for all the challenges Israel faces, Michael's arch-optimism is based on the lessons of Jewish history.

Strategic interests and personal relationships are mixed in international strategy and diplomacy. After almost four months in power, the Israeli government seems to enjoy from both in its dealings with the major Arab countries bordering it. Egypt and Jordan warmed up to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, who are seemingly on the same page regarding Israel's security needs. It is important to stress that while outstanding disputes pertaining to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict challenge Jerusalem's keen aspiration to normalize relations with additional Arab states; the common threat posed to the Jewish State and the Sunni-Arab world by the revolutionary Shi'ite Islamic Republic of Iran – serves as a trigger to what appears to turn into inevitable Jewish-Arab rapprochement. Ambassador Dr. Dore Gold's spent his professional life as a diplomat and trusted senior advisor in the pursuit of peace and security for Israel with its Arab neighbours. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he lives in Jerusalem with his wife and family. Dore Gold was Israel's ambassador's to the UN in the late 90s. He advised on the Madrid peace conference in 1991 before leading Likud's dialogue with the Hashemite kingdom in Jordan which led to peace in 1994. This was a direct response to the ruling Labour Party's dialogue with the PLO. Ambassador Gold was also a key figure in the closure of the PLO's office in East Jerusalem, a concession insisted upon as Israel opened talks with Yasser Arafat as part of the Oslo Accords. Since the turn of the millennium, he's been president of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs with his deep experience of US–Israel policy. A supporter of the Abraham Accords, he doesn't believe the change of administration in Washington will undermine the extraordinary achievements of President Donald Trump‘s diplomats across the region - even if the foreign policy priorities of the Biden administration have switched from the Middle East to the western Pacific. His articles and books cover a wide variety of Israeli diplomacy on Jerusalem and he's dedicated to the Golden City replacing Tel Aviv as the ultimate diplomatic hub. He's also concerned with the UN and its implications for Israel, nuclear Iran, the United States' relationship with Israel and the possibility that Saudi will complete its extraordinary change from sworn enemy to partner in normalization. One area of everyday life in which to practice civility is that of conversation. A civil discussion is the free and respectful exchange of diverse ideas. This doesn't mean we all have to agree, but it does mean we must agree respectfully. To paraphrase Justice Stewart, “I'm not sure what it is, but I know it when I see it;” or not see it as the case maybe around the world. Great gospel legends that you hardly hear any more but when you hear their voices you realize some of them are still here! Her show was a vision given to her husband by God. However when he preceded to called her at work to inform her of this vision and that she needed to get on the radio and she laughed and hung up the phone. But to her surprise a tap came on her shoulder to remind her you must follow through and she did. With two calls to WYCB-AM 1340 first transferring to a voice mail she called again and got Mr. McCamey who greeted her with warm word and the questions of their vision for a show. Surprised she stated well….to introduce and present to others traditional gospel music and its history along with the interviewing of gospel legends. Her concern was that the only time you heard quartet and traditional music from legends were upon their passing. And she wanted to give them there flowers while they were living. These legends paved the way for all gospel artists out here today and she wants people to understand gospel music has come a mighty long way. As one legend stated we had to go in the back door to perform and exit the back door to leave yes we have come a mighty long way. Mr. McCamy asked for an email of her vision and not without her first and second draft being accidently erased on her computer while she was trying to finish. But God prevailed and her third draft to him was better than her first and second and it was sent that night. The following morning she received an email to come in and discuss her possibilities and the rest is history. With a little polishing of the shows name and Vania's renaming you got Ms. Vee. Over the course of twenty years he has at various times worked on campaigns at all levels of American politics, in most parts of the country. He is known primarily for his pro-life work and his defense of the natural family and traditional marriage. He has also been a long-time advocate for the Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms, private property rights, fundamental tax reform, secure borders, and the maintenance of American sovereignty and security through a Reaganite Peace Through Strength foreign policy. Tom is the primary author of the Equal Protection for Posterity Resolution, which is revolutionizing how pro-lifers look at what must be done to stop the abortion holocaust in America. He was closely associated politically for many years with former Reagan administration official and U.N. Ambassador Dr. Alan Keyes. In 2008, with the impending nomination by the Republican Party of John McCain, Tom Hoefling, along with many stalwart Reagan conservatives from across the country, founded America's Party. Tom continues to serve as the party's chairman, and is completely committed to the long-term project of building a principled, practical alternative to the corrupt Democrat/Republican monopoly on power. In February of this year, America's Party, in convention, nominated Tom Hoefling to be its 2012 standard-bearer for the office of President of the United States.
