Dallas Rogers talks with Stephen Gapps about his new book, Gudyarra: The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance — The Bathurst War, 1822–1824 ‘In May 1824, what can only be described as a period of all-out, total gudyarra (‘war' in the Wiradyuri language) had begun west of the Blue Mountains. Relations between Wiradyuri people and the colonists in the country around Bathurst had completely broken down, and the number of raids and killings occurring across isolated stock stations in the district had intensified.' In Gudyarra, Stephen Gapps – award-winning author of The Sydney Wars – unearths what led to this furious and bloody war, beginning with the occupation of Wiradyuri lands by Europeans following Governor Macquarie's push to expand the colony west over the Blue Mountains to generate wealth from sheep and cattle. Gudyarra traces the co-ordinated resistance warfare by the Wiradyuri under the leadership of Windradyne, and others such as Blucher and Jingler, that occurred in a vast area across the central west of New South Wales. Detailing the drastic counterattacks by the colonists and the punitive expeditions led by armed parties of colonists and convicts that often ended in massacres of Wiradyuri women and children, Gapps provides an important new historical account of the fierce Wiradyuri resistance. Stephen Gapps has a long-standing interest in public history and the history of early colonial Sydney. In 2011 he won the NSW Premiers History Prize for Regional and Community history with my book Cabrogal to Fairfield – A history of a multicultural community. Since then he has held a position as a curator at the Australian National Maritime Museum. In 2014 he developed the exhibition War at Sea – The Navy in WWI and in 2015 curated the highly successful Black Armada – Australian support for Indonesian independence 1945-1949. In 2018 he worked on concept development of the new permanent displays at the museum that explore deep time and Australian maritime history. In 2017 he was awarded the NSW State Library Merewether Fellowship for a project on Australian resistance warfare for publication in May 2018 called The Sydney Wars – Conflict in the early colony 1788-1817, which became a book project. His most recent book is Gudyarra: The First Wiradyuri War of Resistance — The Bathurst War, 1822–1824. This interview is a part of the 2023 Festival of Urbanism Book Club Podcast series

Essas identificações constituiriam o núcleo do supereu cruel. Potty humor, slapstick, high brow, and so much more!

Just as Dr. Frankenstein is about to lower Inga out of the cart, Igor uses one of the immense door knockers to bang on the door. Looking over his shoulder, Dr. Frankenstein remarks, "What knockers!" Inga, blushing, thanks the good Doctor for his compliment.  The group approaches the door just as it opens with a slow and deliberate pull before the mistress of the house takes a step forward introducing herself as Frau Blucher. Michael Blucher talks about life inside the bubble of professional sport and the lessons about performance and personal growth we can all learn from the trails and tribulations of the stars of the athletic world. Michael is an author, blogger, keynote speaker and professional advisor to high profile sports men and women and business leaders. His latest book - Bubble Boys – takes readers into the strange world of professional sports – the highs and lows, the enticing trappings and the perilous pitfalls. Michael has spent 28 years in and around professional sport - within the media, corporate partners and playing organisations. He has relationships with some of the best-known names in Australia and he works with some of the biggest names you’ve not yet heard of. He’s witnessed the shifting landscape of professional sport - the changing role of the mainstream media, the impact of social media, big money, the bright lights and the dark times. In some ways this conversation is just two guys who love sport, gossiping about players past and present, incidents, achievements and falls from grace. But there’s a serious thread to it. Talking with Michael opened my eyes to the complexity of a life played out in front of a crowd. He gives us great insight into work he does through his company - The Third Half – giving people the support they need to ensure what they do in the office or on the sporting field does not define or limit them as a person. He is a deep thinker about values, behaviour and the challenges we all face. And he gives some wonderful, practical advice that many of us can use to enrich our own lives. I could literally have talked to Michael for hours. Absorbing. Salacious. Serious. And wise. A good dose of sports talk and some serious links to the lessons we can all extract and inject into our own personal and professional journey. If you enjoy listening to this conversation half as much has I did recording it, you’re in for a real treat.

I have really enjoyed Michael Leggiere‘s earlier work, including the excellent Napoleon and Berlin : The Franco-Prussian War in North Germany, 1813 (2002), like this work, part of the Campaigns and Commanders series at the University of Oklahoma Press. In Blucher: Scourge of Napoleon (University of Oklahoma Press, 2014), Leggiere rescues Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher from the shadow cast by Wellington (and Wellington’s many and prolific admirers). It was Blucher, argues Leggiere, who continually bedeviled Napoleon after 1812 and who created the conditions for the Emperor’s few but decisive defeats, including Leipzig (1813) and Waterloo (1815) – hence the subtitle. Partly because of the focus on Wellington, partly because of myth-making on the part of German nationalists and military leaders, Blucher is too often presented as a strategic imbecile, a mere hard-charging hussar, deserving of the label applied by his troops: “Marshal Forward.” But Leggiere highlights Blucher’srestraint, his canny retreats, as well as his political savvy, to present a much more nuanced picture. Blucher: Scourge of Napoleon was the winner of the 2015 Society for Military History Distinguished Book Award. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Bruce Blucher's name won't be known to many but to my mind he's a key New Zealand musician, having been in some of the best Dunedin bands of the 80s and 90s.Download the Counting The Beat - Bruce Blucher podcast
