It's a cliche in theatre to say a play is more relevant than ever, but in the case of Joe Penhall's Blue/Orange, it's 100% true. A new version of it, starring Michael Balogun and Giles Terera is currently on at Northampton's Royal & Derngate Theatres and Hannah spoke to them about the show's themes of race, mental illness and truth, as well as the emotional rollercoaster of last year's National Theatre production of The Death of England: Delroy. They also chat about Hamilton - obviously - and the advice they'd give working-class youngsters about breaking into acting. Listener, she loved them. The interview Hannah refers to in this podcast can be found here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3csvqngSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Episode 037: Blue/Orange by Joe Penhall Host: Douglas Schatz Guests: Joe Penhall and James Dacre The Play Podcast is a podcast dedicated to exploring the greatest new and classic plays. In each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. In Joe Penhall's explosive and unsettling play Blue/Orange we are asked to observe and judge an extended debate between two psychiatrists who differ on their diagnosis and treatment of a young patient who is apparently experiencing delusions that may be symptomatic of paranoid schizophrenia. The doctors are divided by their ambitions, relative status and racial identity and assumptions, and their discussions escalate into an increasingly bitter and personal power struggle, in which their patient becomes an unfortunate pawn. Blue/Orange premiered at the National Theatre in 2000, and is now revived in a new production by the Royal & Derngate Northampton, Theatre Royal Bath, and Oxford Playhouse, starring Giles Terera, Michael Balogun and Ralph Davis, and directed by James Dacre. Twenty years on the play is as powerful and topical as ever, addressing the uncertainties and dangers around the diagnosis of mental illness, the latent racial prejudices that can distort our judgements, and the pernicious inflections of hierarchical power in inter-personal relationships. I'm delighted to be joined in this episode by the playwright Joe Penhall and the director James Dacre.

Machine Learning in healthcare (and Artificial Intelligence in the broader sense) is real and is being used today. The problem is, it's difficult to sort out what's real and what's hype. Opinions on the matter range from “it's all hype and BS” to “AI is revolutionizing healthcare and replacing doctors”. The truth, of course, lies somewhere in between. Today we talk with Josh Miramant, CEO and Founder of Blue Orange Digital, to help you sort this out. After listening you'll have clarity on what Machine Learning is, an understanding of what's possible in healthcare today, and a practical expectation of what's coming next. In this conversation we'll: Help you understand the terminology. What is Machine Learning? What is Artificial Intelligence? What is everyone talking about!? Take the “magic” out of Machine Learning and help you understand at a basic level what's happening here. Layout the need for data quality and data fidelity (i.e., the usefulness of data for a purpose). Along with data acquisition, this is the first thing you'll need to address. Discuss practical applications of Machine Learning that are being used productively in healthcare right now. This is “Applied Machine Learning” and there are many solved problems that add value in healthcare administration, patient acquisition, costs, pricing models, etc. Dig into the research and operational applications of machine learning. These include things like image detection, diagnosis, etc. like we discussed with Eric Topol (Episode 91). These applications are real and they're improving, but they aren't replacing doctors anytime soon. Then we touch a bit on the theoretical. Things that are happening in the lab that are incredibly exciting but have a way to go before they have real-world applications. About Josh Miramant Josh Miramant is the CEO and founder of Blue Orange Digital, a top-ranked data science and machine learning agency with offices in New York City and Washington DC. Jimmy Akingbola can currently be seen taking on hosting duties in SORRY, I DIDN’T KNOW, a classic comedy panel show commissioned by ITV to mark Black History Month. Episodes 1, 2 and 3 have aired, all trending on Twitter, receiving a positive reception across the board and strong audience figures. First piloted in 2016 on ITV2, created and produced by Jimmy and his producing partner at TriForce Productions, Fraser Ayres, this new four part series tests and tease players’ and audience’s knowledge of untold stories and unsung heroes, embracing the gaping lack of knowledge we all have when it comes to black history. The final episode of Sorry, I Didn’t Know airs on Tuesday 27th October at 10.45pm on ITV. A respected and versatile actor, Jimmy just recently returned to his much-loved and ‘scene-stealer’ character of ‘Valentine’, exuberant younger brother to Idris Elba’s Walter in the third series of much-loved comedy IN THE LONG RUN, created by and also starring Elba for Sky One. Jimmy was praised by Metro, who stated that he ‘proves that African characters can be funny just because they are funny and not because they are ‘other’” whilst the BBC Entertainment stated that he is a ‘very welcome presence on screen’. Prior to that, he led the cast as an asylum-seeking African doctor who forms an unexpected and sparky friendship with the owner of a seaside café, Kate (Golden Globe Winner Brenda Blethyn) in KATE AND KOJI,ITV’S biggest sitcom success since Birds of a Feather and Benidorm with 5 million viewers for its first episode. He also took on a key role in EMMY nominated MOST DANGEROUS GAME for streaming platform Quibi in which he featured alongside Liam Hemsworth and Christopher Waltz; the series was nominated at this year’s EMMYs in the category of ‘Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series’ . He was also seen in TED LASSO for Apple TV+, a new comedy series starring Jason Sudekis as the popular, idealistic and clueless American football Coach Ted Lasso who Sudekis played in NBC Sports videos previously. His previous television includes BAFTA Award-Winning Comedy REV. (BBC2) which also starred Olivia Colman and Tom Hollander, ARROW (CW) in which he played the archvillain Baron Reiter, CHEAT (ITV). Jimmy also has prolific onstage experience. Variety praised his performance in OTHELLO at the Hammersmith Lyric Theatre on saying “Pumped up and sporting a scary mohawk, Akingbola is equally physically effective in the title role, and is a convincing Shakespearian actor”. The Guardian lauded his performance in BLUE/ORANGE at The Crucible Theatre, which was directed by Kathy Burke, in saying“Jimmy Akingbola turns in an exquisitely unpredictable performance as the pawn in the power struggle”. Jimmy was also seen in THE ISLAND at The Young Vic, which was praised in Metro as “meticulous and performed with taut, sweaty intensity by Jimmy Akingbola”. Additionally, alongside TriForce Productions, he is widely regarded as the founder of the TriForce Creative Network, which has multiple initiatives such as TriForce Short Film Festival, WriterSlam UK, and MonologueSlam UK that help to provide opportunities to discover diverse talent including actors, writers, directors and producers. Some of these initiatives have been supported by Spotlight, Equity, Channel 4. C21 Media, ITV, Sky and BBC. Delighted and excited to kick off a new series of the show with the much loved actor, Jimmy Akingbola. Years ago I was lucky enough to see Jimmy on stage at the Crucible Theatre, in Blue/Orange, and since then his career has gone from strength to strength. Whilst continuing to work prolifically on stage, including a memorable performance as Othello at the Hammersmith Lyric, Jimmy has developed a reputation as a scene-stealing comedy actor on TV; you might know him as crack-fiend Mick, from the BBC 1's Rev, or Valentine the exuberant DJ in in Sky One's In The Long Run, created by and starring Idris Elba. More recently, Jimmy has taken on hosting duties in the comedy panel show Sorry I Didn't Know, which has been commisioned by ITV to mark Black History Month this October. In his Mixtape Assembly, Jimmy reflects on the music, lyricism, and poetry that has inspired him to become the renowned actor he is today. He talks about listening to the Wu-Tang Clan in his dressing room to get him hyped up to perform Chekov, ponders what Shakespeare would have made of Grime music's clashing culture, and reveals the time he had to hide from a sword-wielding angry mob who stormed the Birmingham Rep in 2004, whilst Jimmy was performing in the controversial play Behsti, or Dishonour, by British Sikh playwright Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti... TRACKLIST: 1. Wu-Tang Clan: Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing ta F' Wit 2. Wu-Tang Clan: Triumph 3. Wu-Tang Clan: Can It Be All So Simple 4. William Shakespeare: Aaron's speech in Titus Andronicus, Act 5 Scene 1 5. Black Slate: Amigo 6. Akala: Comedy, Tragedy, History 7. The Five Stairsteps: Ooh Child 8. Bashy: Black Boys 9. Stevie Wonder: You Are The Sunshine Of My Life Check out Jimmy's choices on the Spotify playlist here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2TPgnGwj14zaGjJfiqUjrj?si=Vxk-Z1pzSQCoaPM7BQdhpw Big up Clive from Accounts for the theme music, and Suspence and Janai for the backing vocals ;-) Photo by Joseph Sinclair
Chris and Wendy go through two games with excellent themes, anime classics and theme parks. Both games were provided us by the publishers Japanime Games and Blue Orange games. Enjoy!
We talk about his exciting upcoming film 'Mangrove' directed by the brilliant Steve McQueen, he reveals his favourite flavour, opening his West End play Blue/Orange the night before the Twin Tower terrorist attack in 2001. He lets me know how it felt to be on a BLM march in L.A recently, how important his breakout hit film 'Human Traffic' was, working with John Simm and how much fun it was to film. Shaun also tells me about the 'hush don't tell no one channel' and we explain why 11:11 is very special to us.
Welcome back to The Memo Everyone! We were happy to have a guest in this week, our friend Cooper who is responsible for one of the best moments in Memo history! In this episode we give our thoughts on the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl. We give our opinions on how entertaining the game was and also go into specifics about what we think went wrong and right for each team. After that we discuss whats going on with the New York Knicks with their recent firing of Steve Mills. Will this franchise ever be able to figure it out? To stay on topic of miserable Blue and Orange New York teams, we shift our focus to the Mets where we talk about the alleged backing out of Steve Cohen purchasing the team. To cap it all off we talk about 2 separate trades, one in the MLB which involved the Red Sox trading Mookie Betts to the Dodgers. The other trade in basketball which involved a huge 4 team trade involving the Rockets, Nuggets, Timberwolves and Hawks. We hope you all enjoy this one, we had a blast recording! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-memo/support
