Natalia Proops: “When I was eight, I went with my parents to the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to watch the Nutcracker, by Tchaikovsky. It was staged at the time by Marius Petipa, and it was pure magic. Imaginal exposure for children that I still find absolutely beautiful. Walking around in a beautiful dress looking at Buckingham Palace in London, when I was twenty-one, I felt the connection of beauty within the world. The thought that ran through my mind was, “I can now see the world”.  The first time I did an ikebana, a Japanese flower arrangement, I was in my thirties, and a student in New Zealand. Ikebana is the centuries-old Japanese art of arranging flowers, which translates to “making flowers come alive”. In ikebana, the key consideration is to use as few stems and leaves as possible in composing elegant contours that highlight the flowers' beauty. Three to five years are required to acquire the technical and expressive skills. Sogetsu is a modern school of the Japanese art of flower arranging, which was part of the school I attended. It is a privilege to welcome actress, singer-songwriter, and model Nina Bergman to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Born in Denmark, Nina is the granddaughter of Russia's most outstanding actor, Pavel Kadochnikov. She spent her early childhood traveling around Europe with her Russian Gypsy grandparents. At 14, she received a scholarship to the musical theatre Urdang Academy in London. A year later, Nina was in Moscow attending the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre. From there, she moved to New York City and was accepted at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. At that time, Nina got her first agent and began booking various jobs in commercials, films, modeling, and plays. She also started singing in underground bands. Being an adrenaline junkie, she found herself making extra money as an amateur boxer, which later helped her book films, including Universal Pictures' The Car and the DOOM movie franchise. Her other work includes the starring role of Marie in Hell Hath No Fury, a Jesse V Johnson movie, playing a French resistance fighter, and she played the lead role of GG, who was based on a 90s goth singer in the film Carpe Noctem, which Gene Blalock directed. Nina Bergman's performance in Assassin X earned her Honorable Mention Award for Best Actress from the AOF International Film Festival for her role as the notorious Trinidad. She starred as Wonder Woman, directed by Jesse V Johnson, which stars Timothy V Murphy and Marina Sirtis. She also played a cold-hearted killer in The Wayshower with Peter Stormare and Eric Roberts and starred in Know New Art, a Newport Beach Film Festival project by the Freise Brothers and Biscuit Filmworks.  Nina also starred alongside David Arquette, Jesse Metcalfe, John Malkovich, and Vivica A. Fox.She has also been featured in numerous skits on late-night shows, including The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and The Late Late Show with James Corden. Nina also hosted various E! Entertainment and Fuse shows and was a Trophy Presenter at The Grammy Awards.  She also worked on soundtracks for Lionsgate Films, singing the theme songs for Catacombs, Repo the Genetic Opera, and Sharknado. She sang the end title song in Black Limousine and the voice on the soundtrack for All About Her. Gina Tse began her ballet training at 3 years of age and commenced her pre-professional training at The Royal Ballet School in London seven years later. She was a dancer with English National Ballet before joining The Royal Swedish Ballet  in 2004. There, she was promoted to First Soloist in 2007 and Principal Dancer in 2011–– the same year she was awarded Dancer of the Year in Stockholm. She danced with Stockholm 59°North soloists and was also nominated for Benois de la Dance in Moscow at the Bolshoi Theatre in 2016. Gina has danced for The Swedish Royal Family on numerous occasions, including The Nobel Banquet, and has performed Swan Lake for the Opening of Parliament. Gina's instrumental role in the development of The International Ballet School and Arts Centre has been constant. From teaching 3 year olds the thrill of movement within classical dance steps, to preparing her pre-professionals and Trainee Professionals for coming careers at the world's leading ballet schools and companies, her infectious love of dance and performance is contagious. With a remarkable 100% graduate success rate, it's no surprise that Gina Tse and the IBS teaching staff are in demand. Tatiana Stupak (piano) started learning the piano at age five, studying at the Special School of the Rimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg, and after that, for a further five years, continuing at the Conservatory itself. She is the winner of international music competitions including the Leipzig Bach competition. Tatiana is very well known in Cyprus, having played piano at more than 80 events in the last few years, both as a solo pianist and accompanying other musicians. Since 2018, she has played piano solos at The Big Choir Project concerts. She has developed a second major interest since early 2019: mountaineering! Her goal is to climb the 7 highest mountains of 7 continents. Having had no previous climbing experience, she succeeded in reaching the summit of the highest mountain in Europe (Elbrus) and Africa (Kilimanjaro). Just recently she climbed Mount Damavand, the highest peak in Iran and Western Asia and the highest volcano in Asia She plans next to climb the highest peak in South America, Mount Aconcagua in Argentina while playing music and she is attempting to get in the the Guiness Book of records; she loves adventures of all kinds. For example, in 2018, she took a hot-air balloon flight in Cappadocia; in the summer of 2019, she did her first sky-dive, at Kingsfield Airfield in Cyprus. She also took a trip to frozen Lake Baikal early in 2020, where she played the Russain Gusli instrument. And she leaned free diving in 2020 as well, and proved it, by being filmed playing a piano on the bed of the Mediterranean. She like to combine her musical talents with her adventures, whenever possible. She arranges charity concerts for children and for the church, and brings famous musicians from Russia, for example from the Bolshoi Theatre. She opened the Tatiana Stupak School of Music in 2018, where students can enter for examinations set by the Royal Schools of Music and by Trinity College. Students may also take part in public concerts, to gain experience in performing before audiences. In 2018, Tatiana won awards on being chosen in competition, as Russian Cultural Woman of the Year in Cyprus. In the summer of 2019, having organised fund-raising concerts on several occasions for the Institute of Neurology and Genetics, she was invited to play piano solos at a concert at the Presidential Palace, where President Anastasiades presented her with an award on behalf of the Institute. She has been interviewed many times on Cyprus radio and TV channels. Early in 2020 she was interviewed on the subject of children and music, and the interview was shown on Smile TV; previously she appeared live on TV ONE's charity show, DanSing for You, not as a pianist, but as a dancer. Most recently, she was interviewed by RIK1 TV, and the interview was broadcast in July 2020. Also during 2020, over a period of a few weeks, she made live broadcasts on the Internet, giving illustrated talks about ten classical music composers. The three works featured on this recording each have a connection with the trumpeter Timofei Dokshizer. Born in Nizhyn (in the Chernihiv region, now Ukraine) on 13 December 1921, he commenced his concert activity on All-Union Radio when barely 20, and then, in 1947, gained first prize at a competition in Prague. Although he enjoyed a notable career as a soloist, he was also for many years principal trumpeter with the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, from which his distinctive tone can be heard on many commercial and archival recordings of the operatic and ballet repertoire. He pursued a distinguished academic career, being a professor at the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow for a quarter-century and giving classes at the International Trumpet Academy in Bremen throughout the 1990s. Originally from Burry Port in South Wales, John has released 6 studio albums, worked extensively in theatre and has appeared on television, radio and in concert all over the world.At the age of 19, John left Wales to study acting at the prestigious Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Since then he has worked as an actor and singer in theatres all over the country in a great number of different shows. However, he is probably best known for his acclaimed record-breaking performances in Boublil and Schonberg's Les Miserables and in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. He remains the youngest actor in history to have played Jean Valjean in Les Miserables (a role he also played twice on Broadway), was voted the “Best Ever Valjean” and “Best Ever Performer in Les Miserables" by fans of the show worldwide and can be heard as Valjean on the Les Miserables Live! album. His re-interpretation of the character on the re-imagined 25th anniversary production earned him a Manchester Evening News Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2010. He has played The Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera nearly 2000 times (more than any actor in the show's West End history) and was a special guest in the finales for both the Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary concert events – both seen by a global audience of millions. He has also appeared many times on television and radio in the UK both as an actor and as himself, has recorded voiceovers and audiobooks, presented radio shows and live events, has directed and produced live events and has performed solo concerts all over the world in venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, London, Carnegie Hall, New York and the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow. He has released 6 solo albums and two compilation albums -which he also produced - through record labels Sain Music, Sony Music Japan and his own label JOJ Music: Hallelujah e.p (2006), John Owen-Jones (2009), Unmasked (2011), Rise (2015), Music of the Night (Japan-only compilation 2016), Bring Him Home (compilation 2017), Spotlight (2019) featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and most recently The Christmas Album (2021). 2022 will see him launch a theatre based podcast called The Last Show On Earth.Support the show

This week I speak with Olga Mamonova who owns and runs Kino Teatr, an arts venue in the heart of St Leonards with her husband Russell. The Kino opened its doors in 2014 but the building first opened as a cinema in 1913. Olga talks about rescuing this hidden gem when it was being used as storage space for a bathroom shop and how they got a lot of the kit for the cinema second hand an how the Kino has since developed into the cultural heartbeat of the town. I discover what life was like in 1970's Moscow in the Communist Soviet Union - Olga loved her life there and fondly remembers how the arts were easily accessible to her and her family. She attended music school with children from a wide variety of backgrounds and often went to shows at the Bolshoi Theatre for just £5! Her father was a novelist, translator and poet, he specialised in the connection between different cultures and had a passion for Japanese culture. He came from a poor background but raised Olga and her sister to have his values about culture being the most important thing in life. She grew up having a strong passion for her own and other cultures and pursued a career in the arts, working at a contemporary art gallery in Moscow where she met her husband Russell, an artist himself. (Originally aired in April 2021) Francesco Ventriglia is a dancer, choreographer and artistic director. Making his premiere at La Scala, he's performed with the Bolshoi Theatre, the Mariinsky Ballet, Grand Theatre du Geneve, the Venice Biennale. He became Europe's youngest artistic director in 2010 when he was appointed by the Florence Opera House, and was the artistic director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet during the middle of the last decade. He's now in Sydney as the co-founder and artistic director of the Sydney Choreographic Centre, which was launched in March, and has its premier performance this month at the Parramatta Riverside Theatres.

Today I am talking to countertenor Daniel Keating-Roberts. We discuss the importance of creative minds channeling over linear matter, we consider potential ways in which the pandemic has left a positive mark on the performance industry, and Daniel shares his enthusiasm and interest in performance psychology.Daniel studied in Sheffield, before completing his Masters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, with awards from the Foyle Foundation and the Countess of Munster Trust. He also won the 2009 Guildhall aria competition. In 2010, he became the first counter-tenor to be accepted onto the English National Opera's Operaworks programme and in 2014, Daniel was awarded a ‘Golden Mask' award, a ‘special jury prize' with a team for his work in the title role of Franziskus (Sergei Nevsky) at the Bolshoi Theatre. Daniel has performed with opera companies all over the world and currently lives in Hamburg, Germany. Outside of performing, Daniel is a singing teacher and educator with a specialism in performance coaching. Alongside his individual studio, Daniel has worked with several different opera companies and music colleges to deliver workshops and coaching. His workshops are now in demand for corporate team building and creativity exploration, offering businesses the same fun and self-awareness we enjoy as performers. Recently, Daniel began his first project as producer for a site-specific work in East London, working with private firms to encourage dialogue with the communities they exist alongside. A founder member of Voces8, Daniel has previously been Corporate Events and Training manager for the New London Orchestra, and held roles within the charity MAMA, an organisation working in Mozambique, Africa. Don Quixote is a ballet in four acts and eight scenes, based on episodes taken from the famous novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. It was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa to the music of Ludwig Minkus and first presented by the Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow, Russia on 26 December 1869. Many world-renowned ballet productions, from Swan Lake to Romeo and Juliet, have graced the stage of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow since the 1800s. No matter what wars and revolutions the Russians confronted, the Bolshoi would find a way to stay open. That is, until COVID-19. The theatre closed down for six months this year because of the pandemic. It relaunched in the fall, and it's getting ready for a busy Christmas season. Today on Front Burner, CBC Russia correspondent Chris Brown on how the Bolshoi is handling the threat of COVID-19, as Russia deals with one of the highest coronavirus case totals in the world.

Swan Lake, Op. 20, is a ballet composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–76. Despite its initial failure, it is now one of the most popular of all ballets. The scenario, initially in two acts, was fashioned from Russian and/or German folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Reisinger. The ballet was premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet on 4 March 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Although it is presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stagings both choreographically and musically on the 1895 revival of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, first staged for the Imperial Ballet on 15 January 1895, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. For this revival, Tchaikovsky's score was revised by the St. Petersburg Imperial Theatre's chief conductor and composer Riccardo Drigo. Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte stars Bogdan Volkov - a Ukrainian tenor, who after studies at the Glier Kiev Institute of Music and Tchaikovsky Kiev National Academy of Music, works in Moscow Bolshoi theater. Since 2013 he was a member of the Young Artists Program and later, since January 2016, he has been a principal soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre. Bogdan Volkov has toured with the theater to Austria, Switzerland, France, Hong Kong Arts Festival, and Lincoln Centre Festival. In the interview, tenor elaborates on his unexpected debut in Salzburg festival, the lifestyle of an opera singer, and the spirituality he finds on stage.

Don Quixote de la Mancha enters, reading a book. He goes to the bookcase and, not finding it, believes it has been stolen by evil magicians. Then he settles into an armchair and continues reading. He delights in stories of brave knights, fabulous giants and other fantastical creatures, but most of all Don Quixote dreams of his beloved Dulcinea, a woman that he believes to be so lovely and noble that she must be divinity. Gradually he nods and falls asleep to dream of their romantic adventures. Darkness falls. Suddenly his servant, Sancho Panza, climbs hurriedly through the window. In pursuit are several angry women from the market from whom he has stolen bread and a chicken. Awakened by the commotion, Don Quixote sends the women away. Don Quixote tells Sancho that he is determined to seek adventures as a knight-errant, all the while searching for his beloved Dulcinea. He shows him the pasteboard helmet, which, with one sweep from his sword, becomes a shapeless mass on the floor. Antonina suggests that he should use a shaving basin instead, which would make a splendid helmet. Don Quixote enthusiastically agrees and, placing it on his head, orders Sancho to bring him his armour, sword and spear, and to make ready his horse, Rocinante. Act I A market-place in Barcelona Kitri, an inn-keeper's daughter, steals out of her house to meet her beloved, the barber Basilio. Her father, Lorenzo, sees the lovers and sends Basilio away, bringing Kitri to tears. Now comes the rich nobleman Gamache, who, likewise in love with Kitri, goes to Lorenzo and asks for his daughter's hand. The innkeeper accepts with delight but Kitri, appalled at the thought of wedding the foppish nobleman, runs away. Dancing begins in the square and some toreadors try to kidnap the girls they fancy, but their relatives and lovers hasten to their aid. At this moment Don Quixote arrives mounted on Rocinante, followed by Sancho, who is riding a donkey. At his master's command Sancho sounds his rusted horn, causing the townspeople to cover their ears. Lorenzo runs out of his inn, and Don Quixote, taking him for the lord of a famous castle, dismounts Rocinante and, falling to his knees, begs to be allowed to serve him. Charmed, Lorenzo invites the knight to sit on his balcony. Sancho remains in the square where he is surrounded by girls who induce him to take part in a game of blind man's bluff. Then some boys bring in a blanket on which they place Sancho and proceed to toss him into the air. Don Quixote hurries to his assistance and sets him free. Peasants gather in the square and dancing resumes. Kitri returns and, noticing her, Don Quixote acclaims her as his Dulcinea, whom evil magicians have reduced to human form. Becoming jealous of her affection for Basilio, Don Quixote attempts to woo her by partnering her in a minuet. Lorenzo berates Kitri for carrying on with Basilio. Kitri and Basilio then run away, and Lorenzo and Gamache follow them. Don Quixote orders Sancho to bring Rocinante, so that he may also set out in pursuit. Act II Scene 1 – A camp of gypsies among the windmills outside the village Kitri, disguised as a boy is seen walking with Harlequin from a troupe of travelling actors. They guess she is a girl and ask her to stay with them. Scene 2 - The Puppet Theatre A clown is seen walking with Graziosa, the gypsy chief's daughter. A gypsy tells the chief of the approach of Don Quixote. The chief plans a trick for his benefit and, putting on a mantle crown, sits down as though he were a king on a throne. Don Quixote is deceived and kneels to the chief in homage. The chief bids that he sit beside him and orders a festival to be given in his honor. This begins with Gypsy dances and is followed by a performance of the marionette theatre. Don Quixote is delighted with the entertainment but, mistaking the heroine for his Dulcinea and the marionettes for soldiers attacking her, he rises to assault them. The gypsies are terrified. At this moment the clown and Graziosa run away. Scene 3 - The Windmills Flushed with victory, the knight kneels and renders thanks to heaven. Seeing the moon, he takes it for his Dulcinea and tries to get to her. As he approaches the windmills he can see the moon no longer and thinks that evil magicians have hidden his beloved mistress. So, spear in hand, he tilts at the wings of the windmill, which he mistakes for a giant. Alas, the knight is caught by one of the wings and flung into the air. He falls unconscious at Sancho's feet. Scene 4 – A forest Through the trees appears Sancho leading Rocinante, upon which sits the wounded Don Quixote. The servant lifts his master down and places him on the grass, so that he may rest. Then, tying up the horse, he goes to sleep. Don Quixote also tries to sleep, but is troubled by fantastic dreams. Scene 5 – The enchanted Garden of Dulcinea Fairies appear surrounded by gnomes and Don Quixote finds himself dressed in shining armor. Then comes a succession of fearsome monsters, the last being a gigantic spider, who spins a web. The knight attacks the spider, which he slashes in half with his sword. At that same moment the spider's web vanishes to reveal a beautiful garden, filled with dryads and beautiful women, presided over by the Queen of the Dryads and Amor. Among them is Dulcinea and Don Quixote kneels before his beloved. At this moment everything vanishes. Act III The Square Back at the square, Kitri and Basilio join those who are dancing. At the height of the merriment, Lorenzo and Gamache arrive, followed by Don Quixote and Sancho. Seeing his daughter, Lorenzo decides to give his blessing to her union with the nobleman Gamache. Basilio becomes annoyed and, reproaching Kitri for her unfaithfulness, draws a sword and stabs himself. As he lies dying he begs Lorenzo to unite him with Kitri, but Lorenzo and Gamache refuse. Don Quixote approaches Gamache and challenges him to a duel for having refused a dying man's wish. Gamache declines to fight and the merrymakers drive him out of the inn. Taking pity, Lorenzo agrees to unite Basilio and Kitri. At this moment, Basilio pulls out the sword and tells everyone it was a joke. Act IV The Tavern A magnificent feast is held in honour of Don Quixote. Suddenly the Knight of the Silver Moon challenges him to a duel, which results in the latter being vanquished. The victorious knight proves to be none other than Bachelor Sanson Carrasco, who forces Don Quixote to vow that he will not unsheathe his sword for a whole year. The sorrowful knight, true to his vow, takes up his warlike gear and, followed by Sancho, sets out for home.

You can dance if you want to. And wear a tutu, too! Robert Carter is a dancer with Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, an all-male drag ballet company that pays tribute to – and pokes fun at – the classical Russian stars of dance. The male dancers portray ballerinas (with great names like Ida Nevaseyneva), using their incredible athleticism to dance on pointe and exaggerate traditional choreography for comic effect. Robert was one of four dancers in the company featured in the documentary Rebels on Pointe, a Bobbi Jo Hart film revealing the history of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo. Robert Carter’s story runs parallel to that of the fictional Billy Elliot. He grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, in a working-class family. His mother made sure that he and his sisters were exposed to the arts, and Robert was involved in community theatre at a very early age. The man who would become his dance teacher noticed him singing a solo at the Spoleto Festival and approached Robert’s mother to offer the opportunity for ballet lessons. Robert attended his first class when he was seven, and he has been dancing ever since. After high school, Robert received a scholarship to take a summer course in New York with the Joffrey Ballet School. His impressive resume also includes roles with the Bay Ballet Theatre, the Florence Civic Ballet, and the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble. He was born into an Armenian family living in the Russian city of Vladikavkaz, where his father was a mineworker. Pavel first worked in diamond drilling, then as a welder apprentice hoping to follow his father's steps. He first began to sing in a church choir before moving to Leningrad to study cello (1930). As a strong-voiced soloist of a local amateur group he was commissioned to the Leningrad Conservatory. He started his vocal career in the Maly Leningrad State Opera Theatre and then in the Yerevan Opera House, where he performed the leads for three years. From 1940 to 1966, Pavel Lisitsian was the soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre and performed parts of Yeletsky, Onegin, Mazepa, and Robert (in Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades, Evgenie Onegin, Mazepa, and Iolanta respectively), Germont and Amonasro (in Verdi's Traviata and Aida), Escamilo (in Bizet's Carmen), Tatul (Spendiarov's Almast), Arsaces II (Arshak II) (Chuhadzhyan's Arshak II), Napoleon (in Prokofiev's War and Peace), and others. During a concert tour of the USA in 1960, he appeared at the Metropolitan Opera as Amonasro. He died in Moscow.   Tchaikowsky and Rachmaninoff Songs.   Since he lived from 1911-2004, Dmitri Hvorostovsky told me he knew him;there are similarities, since these two have gorgeous voices.

Libby Purves meets retail guru Mary Portas; opera singer Noah Stewart; glass artist Peter Layton and florist Rosemary Hughes. Peter Layton is an artist and glassmaker known as the grandmaster of glass. His new exhibition, Young Masters, showcases work by some of Britain's best young glass artists working today. Peter began his career in ceramics but was drawn to the immediacy and spontaneity of glassmaking in the Sixties. In 1976 Peter opened London Glassblowing and today it is one of Europe's first and leading hot-glass studios. Young Masters - Rising Stars of Studio Glass is at London Glassblowing. Noah Stewart is an opera singer. For his new tour, So in Love, the tenor will perform some of opera's best loved arias and the music that inspired him as a young boy. Born in Harlem, he won a scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School and has gone on to sing on some of the world's greatest stages including the Bolshoi Theatre and the Royal Opera House. So In Love is touring the UK. Noah is appearing with English National Opera in the Indian Queen and is playing BF Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly at the Royal Opera House. Mary Portas, aka Mary Queen of Shops, is a retail guru. Her autobiography, Shop Girl, tells how she started life in hand-me-down clothes and rose to become one of the UK's foremost authorities in retail. She began her career as a window dresser at Harvey Nichols, becoming its creative director and a member of the board. She delivered her report on the future of our High Streets to the prime minister in December 2011. The Portas Review outlined 28 recommendations to rescue failing High Streets. Shop Girl A Memoir is published by Doubleday. Rosemary Hughes has been a florist for over 40 years and will be supplying floral arrangements for the reburial of Richard III. She was granted a Royal Warrant in 2008, after becoming supplier of nosegays to the Queen in 2002. King Richard III will be reburied at Leicester Cathedral in March 2015. Producer: Paula McGinley.

I love this guy!!!! He is one of my five all-time favorite tenors, of those I never saw live. I find the Russian "high vocal placement' so appealing, Here he sings (In Russian) arias from: Fra Diavolo, Huguenots, Martha, Luisa Miller, Lohengrin, Faust, Mignon, Roussalka (Dargomijsky), The Demon (Rubenstein), Onegin (act one), May Night (2 arias), Onegin (Kooda,kooda), Pique Dame Here is some material I fouind interesting about "rivalry."                         (71 Min.) Lemeshev-mania Lemeshev's talent, artistry, acting skills and conspicuous charm very quickly made him a public idol. Almost all his performances during the 1930s and 1940s were accompanied by crowds of fans followed him through the streets, spending days and nights near his house. [1] While Lemeshev was one of the leading tenors of the Bolshoi Theatre, he was admired by female fans, who were jokingly called "lemeshistki." The theatre lobby was a venue for scuffles between the "lemeshistki" and the "kozlovityanki" (female fans of Lemeshev's rival Ivan Kozlovsky).[2] Additionally, the film "The Musical Story" (1941) [3] in which he played the main role, brought him the Stalin prize, and even more widespread furore and fame all over the USSR.
