In this episode, we're joined by Jason Erlich, an employment lawyer out in California, and we talk about a book we both read called “Influence is Your Superpower.” The author, Zoe Chance, put a lot of her research into this book about influence and the psychology of influence. As trial lawyers, we've got to deal with jurors, and we've got clients and influence adjusters. And so, this was a great book for me.  Most people feel very uncomfortable trying to influence others. Reading the book and her ideas and approach, you will find that this is all about brain science. Basically, it gives us an understanding of how our brains work and how we can apply some of our thoughts, as trial lawyers, in talking to jurors, opposing counsel, mediators, or whoever else. It's also interesting how this could be applied in your personal life. It's always coming from a frame of good influence. She talks a lot about her class and what she has her class do, including a couple of experiments that they do. So it's a very fun, light read where you will also find some interesting and applicable concepts. Speaks on the Ecommerce wave of the early 2000’s.  Fell into the ecommerce space and began making money from it quickly! “I’m going to pick a niche and I’m going to make $500 a month passively.”  [8:00] In 2001 David started replaceyourmortgage.com to teach people to pay off their mortgage in 5 to 7 years.  [9:35] Ken clarifies: “The thing you’re selling is education.” David’s site is a membership site, with a 1-time fee that pays for itself.  [9:56] Bob remarks on David’s self-teaching. Oftentimes people hire agencies to do the things that David has done, so his view of agencies is a unique one, as both the customer and the provider.  [10:55] Brad asks: How is your style different from what agencies have done? How does your passion and “having skin in the game” impact the way you do business? [11:48] David: “Bottom line, I look for results… branding and direct response is important… when I interview an agency I need to know that we’re going to geta  result. That’s teh biggest thing for me.” [12:20] David’s rule for salespeople:  Don’t sign up someone that doesn't need to be signed up.  Respect our brand. Sell stuff. [12:49] Ken asks about David’s role within his team. [13:00] David: “I have an assistant, my partner has an assistant, then 8 salepeople and a couple support roles.” Internal sales people and external as well.  To help pay for advertising, he has some external salespeople that pay them for leads and appointments. [14:55] Bob: Talk about how you value cost of acquisition and lifetime value of customer.  [15:30] David: “Once a human being has handed you their visa, they’re 6x more likely to do it again.”  It’s vital that once you get them as a customer, to sell them more stuff. He leads with a free book, because people trust people with books.  [17:18] Brad: “So that’s how you get that authority, with that book. Understanding those strong concepts is the way to go… How do you overcome the naysayers with proof?” [18:25] David: “If I want to convince someone to hand me their Visa… you have to knock the walls down to get to that point.” [19:00] David: “I try to make it so that there is a preponderance of truth...I try to stack that so it’s obvious.” There is a page on their website that is 150 case studies  of PROOF for clients.  Writing a book builds that preponderance of proof.  [20:45] David: “When I write a book, I want you to walk away with innate value from that book.” Even if someone doesn’t make a sale, he wants there to be inherent value in that book so that his brand is associated with their understanding of that concept. [22:15] Bob brings the point back around: “So you’re building this case to deal with the naysayers. What you’re saying is that you’re doing that work so that other people tell them and convince them as well.” This social proof is vital and effective.  [25:30] Ken emphasizes the barrier that David’s business has to pull down- it’s large and difficult to do.  He “de-risks” the sale super effectively, especially within his industry.  [27:13] David speaks on the danger of blending in with the crowd: “Don’t be white noise… grab their attention first and build that desire. You NEED to use my agency to grow your business, and here’s why.” [27:55] David suggests creating a spreadsheet of your top 5 or 10 competitors and noting their strengths and their weaknesses, and compete based on those. “You can be brand new and still piggyback on the knowledge that other companies have created.” [29:43] Ken asks: “What are other things you do to de-risk your purchases and prove to customers that you are legit?” [29:46] David: “I use math, #1. You can’t argue logic.” 6-month moneyback guarantee  [31:25] Brad asks: How do you simplify for those who aren’t particularly math-savvy?  Give them the worst-case scenario, and soothe their pain points. (Fear of interest rates skyrocketing is one example.) Risk-reversal.  “Can you live with the worst-case scenario?” [34:29] Brad adds that David brings a lot of authority to the table when it comes to verbiage surrounding mortgage rates and loan lingo- for a lot of people these terms and this world is scary and unpredictable, but David has a way of bringing out those fears and speaking directly to them. “You do what we encourage our clients to do, you build strong narratives, you have authority. You provide social proof.” [35:10] David: “We’re all trying to move up, to elevate ourselves in society. So if you know that someone can provide that for you, and you trust them.” “Trust triggers” like books, word of mouth- people trust those who’ve written books.  [35:31] Brad speaks on the power of getting referrals and the reliability of leads that come through referrals. “How do you get those stories for your case studies?” [36:02] David: “Typically it’s hard to get people to post anything- much less something positive.” Getting people in the moment to give their honest feedback after they’ve had a good experience.” While sugary testimonials are great, getting a before and after picture of how their problem has changed. What was your mindset about us prior to working with us? What is your mindset now? How did you feel when you were paying us? Would you recommend us to someone and why?  Capturing this before and after while the situation is fresh. Mention the negative view the client had before, and follow it up with how you changed that perspective for them. This draws in the naysayers with a surprise ending. [38:05} David: “So if you’re an agency, go out and get your top 5-10 objections. And then get testimonials that answer those questions.” Speak to their fear and then provide a solution. [38:15] Brad asks: “Why do you think humans are drawn to negativity and skepticism?” 38:40 David: “I’m not sure why… and I don't like it. But it’s never going to change. And so I use that.” [39:10] Bob recalls a study that he read about, that negative information stick to the human brain instantly, whereas positive information takes about 20 seconds to fall away. This is essentially survival, fight or flight in our psyche.  We may not have bears chasing us, but we do have people saying negative things about us.  [40:26] Bob: “ When I see something positive and I like it, I know it’s not going to stick in my brain. So I try to reread it. And meditate on it and sit with it so that it does stick and overcome the negative things that automatically stay.”  [40:55] Ken: “Just being different is important too, right?” Many websites are using positive reviews to convince people to buy, so putting a spin on it (negative headline followed by how the biz answers that pain point) is different and pattern-interrupting.  [42:03] Ken adds that also just being genuine makes a huge difference. “...there’s obviously skepticism in every single sale. And so saying it and calling attention to it actually makes it more believable.” [44:15] Brad and Bob discuss using negativity that is inevitable in your business to your advantage. When most people see nothing but good reviews with no negative, the human discernment kicks in and skepticism takes over, because it doesn’t seem real.  [45:00] David circles back around to authority and proof. “I literally just think about who the person is that I want to hand me money. And what can I do to make it SO obvious.” Write to the person who is in the MOST desperate need of your help, pack your offer FULL of a story, powerful proof and data that will convince ANYONE who falls under your prospect umbrella.  [47:00] Ken: “So the prerequisite for that is knowing your customer persona, avatar, etc with great detail… Often agencies are the worst at that, because there’s the mindset that ‘Everyone is my client!’ which makes it hard to speak to that one person with specificity about their pains and also do what you’re saying… shoot for the worst-case scenario person.” [47:42] David: “one of the emails that I came up with that can help any agency, any biz. The subject line is ‘Your top 3 Questions answered about____ (today only)’ that just offers answers to questions they may have in a future newsletter.”  This creates a backlog of topics that you can then put into a google sheet and begin collecting more information about what topics come up and what the pain points are within each. And it allows you to create images of each persona and the specific pain points within that grouping. It allows you to see the verbiage and EXACT points that you can then use in your copy to speak to those pain points.  This ALWAYS boils down to a small set of topics.  [50:50] Ken recounts a story in Jordan Belfort’s book- objections were listed en masse and they all boiled down to a small list of basic objections.  [51:57] David: “You can even write a whole article about those- speaking to those pain points directly.”  [52:55] Bob asks: “When you are outsourcing, do you look for specialists or generalists?” [53:03] David says mostly specialists, but sometimes specific skills are required. But specialists are preferred, someone who “nerds out” on what they do.  [54:02] Bob asks for advice for agency owners. [54:28] David says he wrestles with real experience within agencies, he wrestles with getting results, getting paid on spend (instead of results). He wants to feel like the agency is in the boat with him, that his money is being used by a TEAM member, not someone who’s trying to screw them over.  [56:58] Ken speaks on the validity of these concerns.  [58: 57] Brad: “The old agency way is that we make money on media and we give away the creative for costs that are almost free now.” [1:02:33] Ken speaks on the flaws in a straight ad-spend model. “At the end of the day you do have to figure out how does the value that I contribute scale in a nice proportion to the value that you’re creating inside of the company you’re working for? I do think there are some flaws in a straight ad spend model.” [1:04:35] Ken speaks on a cool takeaway: “You’ve done the thing for yourself, you are the master. And you can do it for other people. A lot of the time agencies don’t focus on doing the things for their own business that you’re offering to do for other clients.” [1:05:20] Bob: “I think that’s a good marker for choosing an agency- are they doing for themselves what they’ve promised you they’ll do?”

Once you know what you sell, your DUTY is to spread your message. This chapter will show you more about my tactics to increase my influence and income online…   I don’t think I’ve ever talked about this publicly….   But before I bootstrapped my way to my first Funneling Live event, I started having conversations with my wife, and all I would focus on was telling her how intimidated I felt...     Nobody knew who I was   I didn't have a list    I’d been doing funnels for other people, but I hadn't learned how to charge yet.    I was still overcoming a lot of money-based objections in my own head.    In all the promos, Russell was saying things like, “You're gonna be around millionaires...”    Immediately, I my mind started thinking, “I Arrgh, 'm outclassed. I can't go perform in this game. There's no way…”   Finally, my wife was like, “Don't tell anybody that you're not a millionaire yet. Who needs to know?”    … and I felt like I had to hide.    BUT LET ME TELL YOU…   First of all, understand, that was the most absolutely wrong mentality that I could have taken, I just didn't know any different.    Second of all, I didn't understand that during those first few years, when I didn’t have influence or income, I was actually in one of the most powerful positions of my entire life. .    INFLUENCE & INCOME ONLINE   Looking around now, I see it a lot of people who (like me) have their own dreams... but as they start to pursue them, they look at the assets, the influence, and the authority of others ahead of them in the game, (and just like I did), they feel:    Disqualified   Unworthy   Outclassed    ...which is one of the reasons I really feel like I understand where the mind of a brand new beginner is -  because I walked the path and it sucks.   I felt VERY outclassed.    But if that’s how you’re feeling at the moment, I want you to understand that…   You don’t need to start with Influence and Income in order to get them.    … I certainly didn’t.   HOWEVER…   The good news is that there are a few simple plays that you can use to help successfully increase both your influence and income where you’re a beginner, or further down the road.   HOW TO BE INFLUENTIAL   So anyway, about eight months ago, I was asked to be a part of this project and because of how long the project took, (I'm not complaining at all, it's just the nature of the project), it took a long time to come to fruition…   … it takes a long time when you're working with the kind of people that are involved in this kind of project.    A lot of the BIG guys have launch calendars with their time planned out for months in advance.   I already have a launch calendar; I know exactly what I'm gonna be promoting in five months from now.    Another Example:   You may not know that the One Funnel Away, 30-Days Book was in the making for like six months, but no one knew…   It’s the same with some other projects that I can't talk to you about… ;-)    But…   The book that I was asked to be a part of, about eight months ago, is called Influence and Income Online…   And the prompt I was given for my chapter was:    What are some of the steps somebody should take to master influence and income online?   I do A LOT of coaching… (the One Funnel Away, Two Comma Club X, OfferLab, and OfferMind)… and *that* question actually comes up frequently.   DO YOU HAVE THIS FALSE BELIEF?   One of the most common false beliefs  out there is that:   “ Stephen, no one will buy from me because I don't have any following. I have no influence or no authority on the internet.”    And I got to tell you, ...that's just a completely false statement.    You have to understand that three and a half/ four years ago, no one knew who I was…   *NOBODY*   I haven’t even graduated from college when I went to that first FHL…    Then I started working for Russell... and still, nobody knew who I was for a little while.    And that's okay - that's a part of the game.    That’s why I tell everyone to ‘freakin’ publish’ - because it gives you instant authority.    So anyway, I wrote this super thick, incredibly juicy chapter to answer the question of how you get influence and income   I write for a lot of books now. I actually love writing.    You guys may not know, but I was actually the head editor of the yearbook in high school, and I got three Colorado State Awards for my layout designs.    I was NOT a writer, but I did a lot of layout design.    I've always liked writing about the topics that I like to write about, but I HATE writing about topics that I don't like.    Which might sound, “ Duh- obvious!” but I didn't do very well with papers in school because I was like, “I freaking hate this.”    But when I'm really passionate about the topic, I actually love to write.  If you’ve read my chapter for the 30-Days Book, I really enjoyed writing that, (and there are others in the works)...    Moving on…. Uh, *AWKWARD MOMENT*...     I can't tell you the other things coming up, but I can tell you about this!    THE INFLUENCE & INCOME ONLINE FORMULA   In Influence and Income Online, 30 Millennial Millionaires were asked to write a chapter … (a.k.a people who have done a million in their business, who are millennials).    Before anyone who's a baby boomer says, “What can you guys teach me?”   … the proof's in the pudding, man.     There is a formula to getting influence on the internet.    ...and that's what I talk about in my chapter:   I geek out about formulas, and it's because I don't like flash in the pan strategies.    About year and a half ago, I was asked to speak at an  event - I'm not throwing rocks, but the whole theme was strategies to help create HUGE authority in business.    And I think I offended a lot of people because I stood up and said:     “Hey, you know what's interesting about getting authority on the internet? It doesn't matter for a long time.    In fact, it has very little to do with your sales - FOREVER.    Don't focus on getting authority upfront, go focus on providing value. Go focus on providing a really cool solution to a problem and authority naturally comes.”   What I go through in my chapter is a formula - a very easy three steps that I just continue to rinse and repeat so that my authority (I feel weird saying that), increases.    I truly believe that if you just want to know the formulas that create influence and income on the internet, it's not that hard.   I call them axioms….    There are three separate axioms you can go through that enable you to harness some influence on the internet.        Some of them you can probably guess, but some of them you won't - so I'm excited about this chapter.    It's a legit book; it's NOT a pamphlet.    I wrote an actual pretty thick chapter there and I think you’ll really find what I put in there to be helpful.    One of the axioms is to publish but besides that…    What else do you do?    How else do you actually use what you have and the assets you've been given to your advantage?   ...what I share with you in that chapter are some of the reasons I've been able to do EVERYTHING I have in the past four short years.    I mean, I've only been gone from my job barely a year -  it's literally NOT even a year and a half yet as I record this.    *That's saying something*    There are hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs who in the middle of their nine to five and doing things on the side…    What is it that's massive eyeball Steve Larsen did and figured out to kind of hack the game?    That's exactly what this chapter teaches you.    I had someone reach out and say, “Stephen, you give so much away in your podcast. Why should I ever buy any of your stuff?”    Well let me be very frank and clear with you; I’m NOT giving it ALL away on the podcast, but I’ve got really good crap, so the little bit that I do give away is still really awesome…   Sooo…   *GO GET THE BOOK*.    “Stephen, are you pressuring us?”        YEAH, YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!    Dang straight, I am... because I know that this chapter can really, really help you implement what I share.    RAIDING THE COOKIE JAR   One of my favorite people to follow is David Goggins...   I LOOOVE David Goggins.    He's very tough to listen to, and he swears like crazy, so if words offend you, don't follow him.    One of the things he talks about in his ideology/ methodology is concept of ‘The Cookie Jar.’    The concept is that ‘anything that I go through in my life that’s tough is actually a cookie for the future.’    So when I'm about to go through something that's very challenging and intense, I will look back and go to my ‘cookie jar…’     You probably don't know, but I get actually really nervous when I'm about to get on stage, (it might shock you and surprise you to hear that).     I love it, it's where I want to be, but I still have a hard time. Steve killed Stephen, but sometimes, I'm just naturally Stephen:    How did I become somebody who's new?    How did I kill the old self and become/ craft and design somebody who's new?    The Three Axioms that I talk about in my chapter are literally the mechanisms that I use that helped me gain influence and then afterwards, income on the internet.    Sometimes you just gotta cut the mental crap and do the thing!   You've got to be willing to do things and NOT get paid for them for a little while, and that's okay.    The MASSIVE payouts come a little bit later.    ...but so many people are like, “Well, how is this gonna help me immediately?”    It may NOT for awhile - *SUCK IT UP*   Keep doing the things, and after a while, it's like that quote from The Titans, “just like Novocaine, works every time, just takes a little time,” whatever the quote is...    So I created a cookie jar, to remind me of the tough things I went through and when I'm about to go do things that are more challenging, I'm like “Oh man, just do it.”   GETTING OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY   In my content and coaching, I talk a lot about:    Strategies   Methodologies   Marketing    Launch campaigns   ...all those are great, but...    If you can't even do the stuff because there’s crap in your head that's holding you back - stop studying strategies.        It's time for you to sit back  and do a little bit of self-work and ask:      “Why am I so freaked out?        Is there some experience that I've had in my history that is keeping me from behaving as one who would get influence naturally?”      There's a lot of you out there that follow me, (and I appreciate you doing that), who are gonna sit back and say, “Stephen I know that strategy, I've heard you say that before...”    But if you’re your wallet's still thin you need to get introspective. This game has very little to do with what's the next method and strategy. I run the same five plays day after day... it's the same thing and it makes money.    But I had to do A LOT of self-work in order to actually qualify to pull off those methods, those frameworks, those patterns; those football plays, as I think of them.    So I'm excited for you guys to get this chapter.    And when you read it, some of you might be temped to discredit it. DON’T!    Instead of saying,“Yeah, right,”  ask:   What if there's a chance that these strategies could actually work for me?    They're NOT hard, but they're scary.    So I challenge you to go learn them, and while you confront them for the first time in your life, here's the challenge…    I want you to sit back and think to yourself, “What’s my knee jerk reaction right now?”    Because if it's anything other than, Whew, let's go get 'em,” what is it? That's important.    It shows you what the hangup is in your brain.    So when you look at these strategies, it's just like three things I just continue to do…    It's like five strategies marketing-wise,( acts of marketing), that I just keep continuing to do and our income is going up 10% a month - which is ridiculous growth.   I just do the same thing over and over again.     Here's a little moment of tough love because I care about you because you have all this negative talk.    It's this negative feedback loop and you're looking for reasons in your history that disqualify you from moving forward.  So go get the book on Amazon, and as you move through the chapter, write dow what comes up for you.   I've noticed that the entrepreneurs that actually make it and succeed in this game are very, very introspective.    It would probably shock most of you to realize that probably only half of the time the people who get up and share at  Russell's Inner Circle are talking about strategies, the rest of the time, we all go through our internal struggles...   We all go through it!    It's the negative crap in the head that we all have to get over   You understand?   HEAD JUNK    This is such a key thing that Russell Brunson actually hired a specific coach to help the inner circle with their own junk in their head.    Seriously, there is a dedicated coach who studied under the foot of Tony Robbins himself, she's amazing. She's super, super good. Her name is Mandy Keene - she’s incredible.    But you understand how big of a deal this is?    Russell's teaching the strategies but he's like, “I need somebody who's gonna come in and help work on their brains.”    He actually hired somebody while I was still working over there.    He hired a specific individual who is a master at helping people overcome the junk in their head.    What does that tell you?    If you've been focusing only and solely on these strategies, that's great to know them, but I was doing that too…    ...and after two years, I was on try number six of 17, I was doing the same thing.    I knew all these strategies, I knew how to run 'em, but the thing I was running into was my mental crap.    I hate saying the phrase mindset because it's such a fluffy, crappy phrase now, and we all use it in such weird ways.    “What's your mindset?”... and it goes to woo-woo land. I hate that crap, but there is something to it.    And if you've not taken a moment to sit back and go, “Okay, what is it that's actually keeping me back, because it's not the strategies?”    It’s no longer, “Oh I hope someone's gonna go make that tool.” That time and season are over.    All the tools, all the strategies, regardless of product, price point, industry, regardless of if you sell on the internet or off the internet, the crap is here:   The systems    The tools   The people   The processes   … all the stuff that you need is here.    I still don't know how to drive Facebook ads. I don't need to know.    I don't need to know how to be a coder.    I don't need to know how to do all the things that my content team does - I don't.    I don't know how to do most of the things that my business does.   … and that's important to realize and understand.    So what is my role?    It comes down to what I talk about in this chapter:   Influence   Income    Do you need influence to have income? No. Does it help? Yes.    Of course, it helps.    So where do you start if you have no influence?    What do you need to be doing if you have influence?   How do you generate income?    That is what my chapter goes through and that's what I'm excited to teach to you guys.    This is very, very important.    You have to understand, from my position, I have a very unique set of eyes. I've coached 25,000 people personally in this game now - that's not a joke..    Why do you think so many washout?    It has nothing to do with the models.    It's got nothing to do with how it should work for me.    “Stephen, my business is different.” NO!    It has everything to do with your ability to actually execute.    And when I say that, there are things that keep you held back…   Are you sprinting at executing the models?    If you're not, that's exactly what I'm talking about...    And if you are executing, there are things you can do to leverage your time, so you're not spending a ton of time gaining more influence.    You still get influence... but not with tons of your own time.    That's the point of the chapter.    And you're not just gonna hear it from me, you're gonna hear it from 29 other amazing gurus, like Josh Forti and James Smiley, who also answer the question:    How do you actually get influence and income online?    So I'm excited for you guys to have it. I buy a lot of information.   WHAT’S IT WORTH TO YOU?    This has actually happened multiple times, one of my friends, probably four or five years ago, said, “   “Stephen, how are you doing all of this thing on the internet?”    (This was right about the time I started actually having success for other clients.)    I said, “Dude, you've got to go get this book. It's called Expert Secrets, it's amazing.    And he goes to expertsecrets.com, and he's like, “This looks like it's a scammer man, I don't know. I don't think this is actually gonna be a thing. $7.95, I don't know if I'm willing to pay that for the book.”    And I was like, “What! You know me. What is wrong with you?”    About a month later, he reaches back out and he goes, “Dude, seriously, how are you doing this stuff?”    I said, “Go buy the book.”   He goes, “I went back there, dude. It looks like it's a scammer. I don't know, it's a scamming site. $7.95, I don't think I'm willing to part with that for a book.”    I was like: “You're not willing to risk $7.95 to have passive income that exceeds what your job pays you and all the expenses in your life? Don't buy the book. I disqualify you. Are you kidding me?”   And it ended that way, and he's still never bought the book.    I had other buddies that went and bought it and now they have these businesses that they left their jobs and they do it full-time. During this episode, Ron shares 3 concepts that make a lot of sense and build your level of persuaion as a sales professional: preframing, reframing, and deframing. Preframing happens before the sales conversation. It’s the task of coming up with every objection you might encounter before you even start the conversation, and devising answers and solutions to those objections. Reframing has to do with your response to things that come up during the conversation, and deframing is a way to reorient a buyer’s perspective if they are putting up walls or showing that they are the type of client you may not want to work with. Rod does an excellent job of explaining the three and provides many scenarios where you would use each, so don’t miss this valuable training from a sales training pro. Great Sales Professionals Utilize Situations (And Social) To Build Rapport The 10th step Rod shares for having greater persuasion in sales is what he calls “utilization.” He’s referring to the skill of noticing the things about a prospect that you can use to build rapport and set the tone for a great sales conversation. If you’re meeting in their office, look around you. There are many things you can use to connect with the client. If you’re meeting digitally, make use of their social profiles prior to the meeting to learn ways you can build rapport during the call. These are skills that come naturally for a guy like Rod only because he’s devoted the time required to develop them. You can do the same thing if you’re willing to learn from Rod’s experience and advice and apply it diligently to your context. A Pattern Interrupt Can Give you Greater Persuasion In Sales How many times have you gone into a retail store in the mall and had the salesperson ask you the same question every other salesperson asks? “May I help you?” Most of us respond in a similarly typical way, “No, I’m just looking.” The salesperson did NOTHING to lead you away from your typical response that is designed to keep him/her at a distance. In fact, they fed your resistance rather than overcoming it. Rod explains that the things we say as we begin a potential sales interaction need to intentionally interrupt the pattern prospects have in place already. It engages them in the process instead of allowing them to stay outside the conversation. Questions are the best pattern interrupt, but there are many others. Rod explains in depth on this episode. You Don’t Want Any Big “Buts” In Your Sales Conversations As you engage in sales conversations you are not going to have much persuasion if you don’t stay aligned with the buyer. You want to be speaking the same language and be heading toward the same objective - the one THEY care about. Rod points out that the word “but” is one of the worst things you can say when it comes to maintaining alignment. Why is that? Because “but” is a word that positions your next statement in a place that is contrary to what was just said. It’s creating opposition, not alignment. Rod suggests a better alternative and explains how you can use it to increase alignment and move your sales conversations toward successful conclusions. Please, don’t miss what Rod has to share. Page 72.    This goes hand in hand with first impressions.   -'The general idea is to pave the way for a full-line distribution by starting with a small order...Look at it this way-when a person has signed an order for your merchandise even though the profit is so small it hardly compensates for the time and effort of making the call, he is no longer a prospect-he is a customer.'   Page 64.     -'Oh, those 'harmless' concessions.   We've already seen how apparently trifling commitments can lead to further consistent behavior.   As a commitment device, a written declaration has some great advantages.'   Page 67.    I feel this also applies if you sign up online for an email list, a subscription as examples.    Signing up makes it real as opposed to committing superfluously.   -'No matter which variety of low-balling is used, the sequence is the same: An advantage is offered that includes favorable purchase decision.    Then sometime after the decision has been made, but before the bargain is sealed, the original purchase advantage is deftly removed.'   Page 85.    Sign up now at this discounted price for Verizon FIOS, it includes a year of Netflix.    But after a year you pay the full monthly, regular price.   -'What if physical appearance is not much at issue?    After all, most people possess average looks.    Are there other factors that can be used to produce liking?   As both researchers and compliance professionals know, there are several, and one of the most influential is similarity.   We like people who are similar to us.'   Page 148.    This is fascinating, it's from a chapter which also discusses how we are quicker to gravitate to someone selling to us, particularly if they are physically attractive.    But this gives credence to the fact that you don't have to have looks to make something happen.   -'A potentially effective strategy for reducing the unwanted influence of liking on compliance decisions requires a special sensitivity to the experience of undue liking for a requester.   Upon recognizing that we like a requester inordinately well under the circumstances, we should step back from the social interaction, mentally separate the requester from his or her offer, and make any compliance decision based solely on the merits of the offer.'   Page 172.    A great tip for everyday consumers.   -'According to the scarcity principle, people assign more value to opportunities when they are less available.     The use of this principle for profit can be seen in such compliance techniques as the 'limited number' and 'deadline' tactics, wherein practitioners try to convince us that access to what they are offering is restricted by amount of time.'   Page 225.   -'Although we all wish to make the most thoughtful, fully considered decision possible in any situation, the changing form and accelerating pace of modern life frequently deprive us of the proper conditions for such a careful analysis of all the relevant pros and cons.    More and more, we are forced to resort to another decision-making approach-a shortcut approach in which the decision to comply(or agree or believe or buy)is made on the basis of a single, usually reliable piece of information.'   Page 234.   I would say this being the case, especially in our present-day, short-attention-span society.   If you enjoyed this material, please support the author and myself by buying this book through the provided Amazon link.   Thank you! LINKS Robert Cialdini's Influence https://amzn.to/2Q9pbiX    Going Where the Wind Blows   After a day's work, I enjoy coming home, eating dinner and watching YouTube, Netflix or Amazon Prime on my iPad.   I'm always looking for something to watch.   I finally committed to watching Orange is the New Black.   From the beginning.   I barreled through five episodes(of the first season)in the two days.   The show was funny, smart and very entertaining with some drama.   Once I started to notice that a few of the storylines run together and that several episodes were self-contained(like the chicken episode), I decided to go straight to the three final chapters of the season, and it didn't seem like I missed much.    But where I really started resonating with the show was in one of Piper's characteristics(she is the main character).    She seems to go where the wind blows. People she cares about end up suffering because of this.   This spoke to me because I've done this often.   On this very podcast, I've stated numerous times that 'I've discovered this new technique, approach, skill and I want my world to revolve around it because it will give me some edge or I had a dream about my mother and I should go and move back in with her.'    I tell anyone who will listen to me about this new thing.   I'll try it for a bit, then drop it and go back to my regular patterns.   Some of these new ideas have stuck.    Most haven't   Examples being; gaining inspiration from the Scavenger Life podcast and listing an item every day on eBay.   I'd begin that for a week then go back to listing 3-4 things a week.    Another instance was watching YouTuber Casey Nesitat.   I thought I want to start vlogging because it seemed like fun.   Maybe I can get millions of YouTube views, make some money I thought!   I purchased a ton of video equipment.   Quickly I realized my bookbag is heavy enough and  I don't want to travel with all this gear.      There are pros and cons to trying new things.   The ONE Thing book says you should put your time and energy into what you enjoy and already have some proficiency in.    On the flipside on a recent day off I listened to a combination of MWF podcast (episode 472), Marie Forleo's podcast interview of Jaclyn Johnson, and Tim Ferriss interview of Drew Houston.   The alphabet soup message I got from listening to these podcasts is to try many things and fail because you don't know what you are good at and can potentially love until you discover it.       Also, straight quitting on something is a waste of time.   Because if you failing, you're learning.   Apply what you've learned on the second go round and continue growing/failing/learning from there.   But if you quit, you have truly wasted your time if the lesson learned from the failure isn't used.   So is trying different things a waste of time?    Does this take away from working on your main goal?       When I pay attention to my patterns, I don't regularly do much of the stuff I discovered in a book, podcast, a video.   But now I'm starting to notice my time spent other than on my creative endeavors and it makes me feel guilty.    I spend 3-4 hours at night watching TV.    At work when I'm not 'working' I'm on the internet looking at entertainment news.       I believe there is a time to procrastinate.    If I spent all my time documenting and creating, I'd get sick of it.    Even if I do so for little bits at a time, I dance, draw, write a little bit every day or every other day.    Weekly I work on the podcast.   Small actions done consistently make big things happen.   Piper Chapman is free-spirited and determined, and I like that.   Thanks to this fictional character for showing me my own indecision and going where the wind blows.    9 times out of 10 I believe many answers to my own questions exist within me.   I just need a reflection of myself in others, in a movie, in a book, in a podcast, to find it.   LINKS What is 'Orange is the New Black? https://bit.ly/1QNWvqg  The ONE Thing book https://amzn.to/2wOZigd    You are Born with Love   I was listening to the audiobook version of Marianne Williamson's 'Return to Love' for the 3rd time.   Presently I'm highlighting sections of interest in the ebook on the Kindle app.    Using this new method will help create more content for the podcast.   Reading and now listening(more often)I'm completing more books.   My brain is getting bigger!!     In the early part of the book, Mrs. Williamson talks about how we are born with love, how it is our nature.   Fear is something we learn.  This is the quote here from page 4: 'Love is what we were born with.   Fear is what we have learned here.   The spiritual journey is the relinquishment-or unlearning-of fear and the acceptance of love back into our hearts.   Love is the essential existential fact.   It is our ultimate reality and our purpose on earth.   To be consciously aware of it, to experience love in ourselves and others is the meaning of life.'   These next quotes come from 'Way of the Peaceful Warrior' by Dan Millman.   I will link the connection I've made to the previous quote right after.   This is on page 159.   'As a child, all this would appear before your eyes and ears and touch as if for the first time.   But now you've learned names and categories for everything:  'That's good that's bad, that's a table, that's a chair, that's a car, a house, a flower dog, cat, chicken, man, woman, sunset, ocean, star.'   You've become bored with things because they only exist as names to you.   the dry concepts of the mind obscure your direct perception."   "You now see everything through a veil of associations about things, projected over a direct, simple awareness.   You've 'seen it all before': it's like watching a movie for the twentieth time.   You see only memories of things, so you become bored, trapped in mind.   This is why you have to 'lose your mind' before you can come to your senses."   The mind is a powerful, multipurpose device.   According to these recent books I've read(including Eckhart Tolle's 'Power of Now'), it can be problematic when it starts going in all directions.    Unrelated thoughts to the task at hand, hang-ups from the past.   Worrying about the future.    Jealousy, lack of focus, ego, envy.   This is my mind's wheelhouse when it starts running around the neighborhood like a dog off its leash.   Let's say a co-worker, I feel does not appreciate a small gesture of kindness which I've imparted.    My ego is hurt.   I start to think, 'next time I will let them earn my generosity, my love.'   This egoic sentiment is learned.   I wasn't born with this.   I, like so many of us, was born with passion, curiosity, no fear.      There is a method to combat this(which I learned from the books mentioned above).   Basically to turn off your mind.   The times I notice when my mind is turned off; when I'm watching TV, listening to podcasts or when I'm drawing.   Now when my mind and emotions are all over the place, I gently tell myself 'Attention!   Be here now.   How's your breathing?    How's your body feeling, what's your posture like?'   It's not easy, it's tough. In the past, I would knock myself for turning my brain off and going on auto-pilot.   I would talk down to myself, badly.    Listening particularly to Mrs. Williamson's book, it's reminded me how toxic this is.    When is it a good time to flip the switch and turn on my mind?    Solving issues, problems. Focusing.    At work, I've been making fundamental mistakes.    Like being late to work, or not crossing all the 'T's' or dotting the 'I's.'    I used my mind and came up with solutions. I started waking up 10-15 minutes earlier to prevent being late; I also started keeping a log of all my work, as a reference point to follow up on what I'd already done.   I'm happiest when I'm coming from a place of fearless love and generosity to my family, friends, co-workers.    I want to re-discover my childlike curiosity.       Honestly, when my ego shows up, or out of fear I put up my defenses, I'm a lesser version of myself.   When I put someone down mentally or judge them, I'm putting myself down because how I see another human being, in essence, is how I look at myself.   This is a benefit of the negative emotions.    It shows me my capacity, where I need to show more love, forgiveness, patience, compassion or allow things to be.   I realize I've written these articles on all these beautiful lessons I learn through books, podcasts, and videos.   I want to try to incorporate many of these lessons.   Most don't stick unfortunately as I fall back into my patterns and behaviors.    But that doesn't control me.   I do.   I'm not perfect; I want to be better.   This lesson regarding the mind is one of the most impactful I've learned.   I want it to stay with me. LINKS Marianne Williamson's 'Return To Love' https://amzn.to/2oLRTd2  Dan Millman's 'Way of the Peaceful Warrior' https://amzn.to/2wONaLz  Eckhart Tolle's 'Power of Now' https://amzn.to/2NRMQCV    Crazy Rich Asians REVIEW-SPOILERS   I saw this movie over Labor Day weekend.    To date, it has been the number one movie in the box office 3 weeks in a row.    On a budget of $30 million dollars, it has grossed over $110 domestically.    A sequel was already announced a few days after the film's release.    Several movie critics I trustingly follow praised this film.   The Rottentomatoes score is 93%.   I was curious and wanted to check this out.   This movie was only ok for me until it got to Colin and Araminta's wedding.    Up until this point, the movie was ho-hum, I felt the comedy was forced.    I wasn't really invested in the main characters.     But I now realize during that first half, seeds were being planted which would pay off by the film's end.   The movie takes place for the most part in Singapore.   What is shown of this country in this film is gorgeous.    The colors pop and are vibrant.   I started thinking, 'man I gotta go visit this country!'   As I mentioned above the movie really picks up for me after the wedding.   Nick's family acceptance angle with Rachel was great.   The romance kicked into the next gear with Nick and Rachel during the wedding scene.   This is first time(and not the last)where I got emotional.   When everyone was tearing up and Nick was mouthing 'I love you' to Rachel.   Colin is crying while Araminta is walking down the aisle.    Eleanor played by Michelle Yeoh watching all of this happen.   You know when you see her, she is not crazy about what's going down between her son and his girlfriend.    Good stuff.   The strongest performances in the movie were by Michelle Yeoh who plays Nick's mother.    She may come across wooden and emotionless but subtle things in the face or how she turns her head, or what she says delivers the point across nicely.   Showing how doing little can say so much.    Another great performance and familiar face was the beautiful Gemma Chan.   I remember her from the TV show Humans, where she plays a humanoid who has emotions.   I enjoyed her in that and binged two seasons of it on Amazon Prime.       Ms. Chan's(who played Astrid)story, with her husband, the infidelity and accepting oneself as they are and not making excuses because of it I also thought was great.    I resonated with this especially when it comes to Nice Guy Syndrome.    You can found my articles on that and the related book here.   I started caring more about Rachel's character near the end section of the movie.   I thought the scenes with her mother and Eleanor at the mahjong game where fantastic.   This movie was labeled as a rom-com but I found it more drama/romance than comedy.   The comedy was fun but as I mentioned forced at times with Awkwafina and Ken Jeong(from the Hangover series).    I smiled and chuckled a bit but that's about it.    A beautiful looking movie, nice romance.   I hope the sequel is even better.    LINKS What is Crazy Rich Asians? https://bit.ly/2JYWlhw  Crazy Rich Asians book https://amzn.to/2wPyoVr  My Biggest Takeaways 'No More Mr. Nice Guy' https://bit.ly/2oJynxT      Enjoyed this? Dr. Alexander Vidan is a well- known speaker and wellness advocate within the St. Louis community. Dr. Vidan has served as one of the team physicians for the St. Louis Cardinals organization since 2009, including during their 2011 World Championship season. Since 2008 he has been a regularly featured consultant on health and wellness topics for Fox 2 News and KPLR Channel 11 News. He serves on the Executive Board of the Mid-County YMCA and is Vice-President of District 1 of the Missouri State Chiropractic Association. He received his Doctorate degree in 2004 from Logan College. His love of teaching others is apparent and Dr. Vidan was the lead technique tutor while at Logan and also received numerous accolades, including the Award of Excellence. After graduation, Dr. Vidan returned to Logan as an adjunct faculty member, while also running a busy and successful private practice. He he is equally at ease in front of an entire city on live television, or presenting to groups of all sizes. Meet the patient where they are. Show them what they can have through chiropractic. Marketing: Being on the news every other week; Talks to corporations, church groups, mom groups, etc. Becoming a sports chiropractor: Get your foot in the door somewhere. Be known by everyone so that when the opportunity comes up, your name gets thrown in the mix. Different structurs of being a team doctor: Paid positions, donate time, Pay the team, etc. Team physicians usually do not travel. Typically the home chiropractor takes care of both teams. If you are part of a team, you want all types of doctors involved – be inclusive, not exclusive – make it a joint effort and co-manage. Follow your passion! TMJ: you need to really KNOW how to get results. Dr. Vidan does seminars on his TMJ technique - a lot of hands on teaching. Wellness Champions- getting docs out into their community. The more you give, the more you gain. “Their objections become your objective.” – Dr. Vidan With talks, the shorter the better. We don’t know what we don’t know.
