In this episode: spiritual bypassing, curiosity, fear, wellbeing, inflection points, and what the body stores. This we are re-joined by Cory Muscara to discuss the benefits of practicing mindfulness while embarking on the FI journey, the concept of spiritual bypassing, and the positive benefits that come from being present. An important part of the FI journey is learning to take actionable steps to better your life, and a large part of this requires introspection and honest reflection of where you are in your life. Through the practice of meditation and setting intentions, it may allow you to recognize patterns that harm you or keep you from enjoying life in the present. While working through triggers or anxieties can be uncomfortable, mindful practices can be the vehicle to move you from discomfort to a place of control and confidence in your life. So while you may be putting all your mental energy into reaching your FI goal, remember that getting to the finish line is not what this journey is about, but rather the positive effects and changes that come from taking control of your life and being present! The Cognitive Crucible is a forum that presents different perspectives and emerging thought leadership related to the information environment. The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, US Army Brian Godwin discusses his thesis: From Perception to Protection: Countering Cognitive Warfare in the U.S. Army. His study seeks to address the critical question of how the U.S. Army can protect the force against cognitive warfare, with a specific focus on understanding the strategies and tactics employed by China and Russia. It employs a qualitative comparative case study method, examining China's cognitive warfare campaign during the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. election. The study reveals significant gaps and limitations in the Army's existing Doctrine, Training, Leadership and Education, and Policies (DTLP). These areas provide minimal defense against cognitive warfare, indicating a vulnerability of the force. In response to these findings, this thesis proposes several key recommendations to strengthen the Army's resilience against cognitive warfare, including the prioritization of media literacy in Army training and education, revisions of DTLP to effectively counter cognitive warfare, the application of inoculation theory to boost psychological resilience, and the cultivation of active relationships with Joint, Interagency, Intergovernmental, and Multinational (JIIM) partners. In this episode we discuss an old trick palm readers use that you can leverage to get people to do what you want, why persuasion does not lie just in the message itself, but rather in how the message is presented, what the research reveals about why the context matters as much, if not more, than the content itself, why you shouldn't ask people for their opinion but instead ask someone for their advice, how small differences that seem trivial make a HUGE impact on human behavior, and much more with Dr. Robert Cialdini.Dr. Robert Cialdini is the president and CEO of INFLUENCE AT WORK. He is the multi best selling author of Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way To Influence and Persuade, and his most recent book Influence, New and Expanded: The Psychology of Persuasion, available this May. Dr. Robert Cialdini has spent his entire career conducting scientific research on what leads people to say “Yes” to requests and appeals. The results of his research, his ensuing articles, and New York Times bestselling books have earned him an acclaimed reputation as a respected scientist and engaging storyteller. His books, including “Influence” and “Pre-Suasion,” have sold more than 7-million copies in 44 different languages. Robert is also the Regents' Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University. In this episode, Robert joins Greg to talk about what's changed in the 30 years between his published books; authority & credibility; the predominance of fear in our culture; and how they each teach ethics in their business courses.Episode Quotes:What is the importance of social scientists observing phenomena in the field? 6:49: I think it's crucially important for a couple of reasons. One is in the laboratory; we control or eliminate all sources that may affect our data except the ones that we are studying. That's what we try to do. Those may be the things that exist in the natural environment that could influence the effects, but we don't register their influence because we've eliminated them in the hothouse of the experimental lab. So, that's one thing. The other is we can see the power of the effects that we find in the field because if they are successful, they have overcome all of this myriad of other influences that are working on people—making decisions, making choices, in everyday situations to transcend all that ground noise that's going on, that could otherwise eliminate the effect if the effect wasn't strong enough to overpower those influences. How can we manage the constant barrage of appeals for our attention?26:50: There's one strategy that is the most powerful in rebalancing the scales against the larger impact that a salient argument has. And that is to consider the opposite.Influence as a leadership tool47:22: For leadership, you want influence in the long term. You want to create an aura that allows people to feel comfortable moving in your direction, even though they don't have to make a purchase or anything, but they're willing to go along with your preferences because you've established yourself as a credible source of authority for them.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Daniel KahnemanGuest Profile:Professional Profile at Arizona State UniversityRobert Cialdini WebsiteRobert Cialdini on TwitterRobert Cialdini on LinkedInHis Work:Influence At WorkInfluence, New and Expanded: The Psychology of PersuasionPre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and PersuadeThe small BIG: small changes that spark big influenceYes!: 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive

The GodFather of Influence, Robert Cialdini joins us on Behavioral Grooves to share his motivation for expanding his bestselling book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion which now includes a completely new Seventh Principle of Influence: Unity. This additional principle can help explain our political loyalties, vaccine hesitancy and why media headlines can be so inflammatory. Another motivation for the revised edition to the book is to include more application to the Principles of Influence. So our conversation highlights some of Bob's advice for start-up businesses and how they can harness the principle of Social Proof. And as general advice, Bob recounts how he recently advised a teenager to be generous to others – this in turn stimulates the Rule of Reciprocity, nurturing a relationship which is mutually beneficial. No episode of Behavioral Grooves would be complete without discussing music, even with guests we've interviewed before! But the theme of unity has a special significance with music and Bob highlights how music and dance bring people together and help them feel unified. Plus we get an interesting story of an experiment in France, and how a guitar case played a crucial part in one man's luck. We hope you enjoy our discussion with The Godfather of Influence, Robert Cialdini. Since we generously share our great content with you, perhaps you feel influenced by the Rule of Reciprocity and will become a Behavioral Grooves Patreon Member! I've got a good one here for you today. Well, I think every episode is good, but especially today. My good friend and our copywriter, Brittany McBean, is on the show. Brittany is a brilliant conversion copywriter and launch strategist. She writes all the best words, the greatest words, beautiful words. Bigly words. Multi 6-figure launch words. She loves writing launch copy that makes big bucks. This is her third time here on the show. I've been working with Brittany for about a year and a half, and she's completely helped me transform the way I communicate my brand. She's here to talk about all the uncool marketing tactics that have been taught for years, and that have been used by so many people. Up until a couple of years ago, I also used them. That's what I was taught. That's what I learned; all the unsavory marketing tactics that get taught, that so many people use, and that people are done with. When I say people, I mean your audience. The people you are looking to serve. They're done with these marketing tactics. They're jaded with all of the false scarcity, et cetera, et cetera.People just want real. They don't want the—I don't want to call it sleazy—but the uncool things that have been happening for so many years that we all know, and that so many of us have used. Again, I used them for years. If you're still doing it, zero judgment. Our goal today is to give you a different perspective, an ethical way. Marketing and selling your offer in an ethical way.In this episode, you'll learn:Marketing tactics you should stop usingWhy we need to give people more autonomy in their decisionsWhat happens when we are honest in our marketingThe psychology behind customers' decisionsWhy less sales pressure makes buying decisions easierWhy your marketing copy needs to be specific to your audienceBrittany's 3-step process for making moneyLinks & Resources:Robert B Cialdini, PhD: Influence, New and Expanded: The Psychology of PersuasionThe Art of Online Business Podcast: Simple Hacks for Writing Copy that Converts, with Brittany McBeanThe Art of Online Business Podcast: The Secret to High Converting Launch Copy, with Brittany McBeanDM me on InstagramVisit my YouTube channelThe Art of Online Business clipsThe Art of Online Business websiteThe Art of Online Business Podcast websiteCheck out my Accelerator coaching programBrittany McBean's Links:Check out Brittany's websiteFollow Brittany on
If you love learning about cons, scams, and tricks, then this is the episode for you. Listen as Perry sits down with Brian Brushwood, someone who has made understanding and teaching scams and tricks his life's work. Brian is the creator of Scam School, Scam Nation, Hacking the System, Modern Rogue, and more. For the past 20 years, he's toured around the world teaching and demonstrating everything from side show stunts, to sleight-of-hand magic, to the intricacies of con artistry. Brian's new podcast, World's Greatest Con is a deep-dive into the stories and tactics behind the most intricate and interesting cons imaginable. In season 1, he told the story of Operation Mincemeat, a WWII plot devised by Ian Fleming (creator of James Bond) to trick none other than Adolf Hitler. Season 2 covers five different cons all related to the game show industry… it's both entertaining and riveting in some very unexpected ways. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
A company's success nowadays is so reliant upon pitching and getting media coverage. Having a credible source say positive things about you and your company can be pivotal when it comes to whether your brand is going to be seen or not. That is exactly why this episode of The Brainy Business is dedicated to giving you some concise tips on how to use behavioral economics to pitch your brand. I know pitching yourself can feel awkward, but when you understand the brain science it doesn't have to be, especially if you follow my tips! I discuss different brain biases such as social proof, authority bias, familiarity bias, and really focus on availability bias. Availability bias is critical to pitching success. You can take advantage of it by predicting and paying attention to trends and finding a way to offer people a fresh perspective on them. We close with three key points to keep in mind when pitching: (1) keep it short (2) be happy with your language and (3) follow directions. This and so much more in this episode, which will help you use behavioral economics to successfully pitch yourself and your business, so listen now... Show Notes: [00:06] In today's episode, I talk about using brain science to successfully pitch to media. [02:22] Pitching yourself can be awkward and uncomfortable, and there are brain biases that can explain why that is. Understanding them can help you turn them around and use them to your advantage. [05:05] There is good news – pitching doesn't have to be so hard if you use my tips! [07:20] I explain why media coverage and pitching are so important, beginning with social proof. [08:43] Authority bias leads us to believing that anything that the news or media reports is true or else it wouldn't be featured. [09:32] Familiarity bias makes us lean toward things that we already know or know of. [10:26] The final (and I would argue, most important) brain bias that is to your benefit when pitching is availability bias. [12:48] One of my favorite examples of availability bias is how travel to Norway drastically increased following the release of Disney's movie Frozen! [14:20] In order to take advantage of availability bias, you need to predict trends and offer something unique in relation to them. [16:30] Pitching to reporters can be stressful, but remember that reporters are people doing a job. You can be a resource to them they are thankful for if you connect with them properly. [19:06] A simple and easy habit you can create to make you a master at pitching by taking advantage of availability bias. [21:55] Recognize where you fit and where you can fill in gaps. [24:23] Remember to take advantage of familiarity bias! Get people to know who you are and like you before you ask for anything [25:41] I recommend signing up for HARO (Help a Reporter Out). [27:10] It's important to remember that not all of your pitches will land, but that only makes it that much more rewarding when they do. [27:43] I give you some key tips to keep in mind: (1) keep your pitch short and sweet, (2) be sure that you're satisfied with how your pitch is worded, and (3) follow directions that reporters put into their requests and do what they ask. [29:30] A quick and simple summary of all the tips in the episode. [31:03] Registration is now open for my Setting Brainy Goals course! Thanks for listening. There are methods used to influence us to either buy or do something. We may even be persuaded to participate and only later on wonder how they got us to join. It is beneficial to know these seven principles that compel us to react. Today's guest is Dr. Robert Cialdini. Dr. Cialdini is an author and keynote speaker as a leading expert on influence and persuasion. His books are published in 44 different languages and have sold over 7 million copies. He's a New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today best-selling author. He's also been elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences. Show Notes: [1:10] - Dr. Cialdini got into this field because he was easily persuaded in the past. [3:05] - Incognito, Dr. Cialdini answered as many ads and training programs he could get into to see how advertisers convinced people to buy. [4:40] - In his research, he found that there are seven principles to persuasion. [5:44] - The first principle is the principle of reciprocation. This is present in every culture. [6:57] - First someone gives you something and then you feel obligated to give back. [9:03] - Chris shares an experience at a restaurant to receive something for free that actually required him to do something first. [11:37] - Is something genuinely giving you something or trapping you into compliance? [12:19] - The second principle is the principle of “liking.” You will be influenced more by those who you like. [13:48] - One way to get people to like us is to give them something which ties right into the principle of reciprocity. [16:12] - Step back from the situation and separate the salesperson from what he or she is offering. [17:18] - The next principle is the principle of social proof. If a lot of people are choosing or favoring something, it seems like something you should do, too. [18:28] - We recognize when there are fake reviews. 5 star reviews generally make us skeptical. [21:04] - Dr. Cialdini describes a study done in McDonald's that boosted sales of one menu item by 40%. [24:48] - The next principle is similar to social proof and decreases someone's uncertainty. It is the principle of authority. [25:58] - The problem with assuming someone is an expert is the appearance of actors and influencers being paid to promote. [27:34] - Ask yourself, “Is this person an authority on the topic at hand?” [28:32] - Also ask if the person is being unbiased in their testimonial. [30:19] - The next principle is the principle of consistency. [32:01] - Dr. Cialdini shares why he no longer signs petitions. The pressure to be consistent can motivate us to do things we don't want to do. [35:28] - Sometimes sales sites will list an item or booking that there are only two left at this price and list a number of people also looking at the listing. [37:38] - We don't know all the time if something is legit. [39:55] - Dr. Cialdini added a seventh principle to his book called the principle of community. [41:17] - Dr. Cialdini demonstrates how this works with a personal example. [43:11] - Be wary of promotions within your “tribe.” [44:12] - Some companies will ask for collaboration to create unity and produce customer loyalty. [47:09] - Dr. Cialdini shares a story about letting people into one's house. Today we are talking about online reviews. We are so excited about this topic because it's something attorneys can dive into that can make a big difference in their law firms. Everyone knows to some degree that reviews are important. However, there's a lot of confusion out there about them. There are even those who have concerns and criticism around the topic of online reviews. This makes it an incredibly interesting topic. Regardless, online reviews are a crucial part of your marketing strategy. They are only growing in importance in today's online society. So, in this episode, we're diving into this topic and teaching you everything you need to know about it. Tune in to learn a clarification on the growing importance of online reviews for law firms, how many reviews you should be getting, and how to build a culture and a process for getting online reviews. Show Highlights: Why law firms need online reviews. How many reviews you need. How to make getting reviews a part of your process. Why you should choose one person to be responsible for that process. How to figure out the best time to ask for reviews. How to make it easier for clients to leave you reviews. The importance of following up. Nontraditional people who you could ask to leave a review. Subscribe and Review We'd appreciate you subscribing to this podcast and leaving an Apple Podcasts review. Reviews help others discover and learn what Law Firm Next is all about. It only takes a second and helps us out a lot! Supporting Resources: Influence, New and Expanded: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B Cialdini PhD “Say the Right Thing: Apologies, Reputability, and Punishment” by David B Wooten ACTION STEPS: Identify a champion. Set your review goal for the year (twice as many as the direct online competition). Identify the points in the process of a case where there are natural high points of client satisfaction and insert review asks in those places. Gather the links to places where people can leave you a review (Google, Avvo, Yelp, etc.). Default to Google most of the time. Teach the team how to ask for a review. Make sure your entire team is asking for a review, especially ANYONE who interacts with a client. Your paralegal or assistant may have had to do a lot of back and forth with them on gathering documents and scheduling follow-ups and they may be the person who elevated the client sat. Let them ask. Think outside the box of traditional clients. Follow up. Respond to reviews. *** Episode Credits If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Unfortunately, most lawyers don't know how to write persuasively, and their marketing copy is boring. And surprisingly, many marketing folks (who supposedly are experts in persuasive ad writing and marketing writing) also do a really poor job. So don't feel bad if you struggle to write persuasively. Marketing is so wildly successful because sales and marketing people have been able to capture the primal brain, triggering emotion and primal urges to buy. This exact same neuroscience applies to learning design. In the process of change, it starts with awareness. A lot of course creators are trying to convince people with facts and data. Basically trying to convince the rational brain when in fact you should first impact the primal brain to impact decision. My guest in this week's episode is Bogdan Manta. Making neuroscience digestible and easy to apply to our own learning experiences is his special skill. Bogdan Manta has key expertise in the fields of persuasive communication, neuromarketing, neuroscientific persuasion, behavior profiling, live immersive experiences, show production and more. The GodFather of Influence, Robert Cialdini joins us again on Behavioral Grooves to share his motivation for expanding his bestselling book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (https://amzn.to/3tyCpZ6) which now includes a completely new Seventh Principle of Influence: Unity. This additional principle can help explain our political loyalties, vaccine hesitancy and why media headlines can be so inflammatory. Another motivation for the revised edition to the book is to include more application to the Principles of Influence. So our conversation highlights some of Bob’s advice for start-up businesses and how they can harness the principle of Social Proof. And as general advice, Bob recounts how he recently advised a teenager to be generous to others - this in turn stimulates the Rule of Reciprocity, nurturing a relationship which is mutually beneficial. No episode of Behavioral Grooves would be complete without discussing music, even with guests we’ve interviewed before! But the theme of unity has a special significance with music and Bob highlights how music and dance bring people together and help them feel unified. Plus we get an interesting story of an experiment in France, and how a guitar case played a crucial part in one man’s luck. We hope you enjoy our discussion with The Godfather of Influence, Robert Cialdini.
