Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
This week's Mid-Atlantic felt like reading classified memos in the group chat, except the group chat accidentally included a journalist and the memos were about bombing Yemen. Host Roifield Brown and his panel of sharp minds, Aram Fischer in Oakland, Denise Hamilton in Houston, Steve O'Neill in London, and Leah Brown in Broadstairs, looked at two transatlantic absurdities: national security leaks from Team Trump 2.0, and a British Labour government budgeting like it's still 2010.In the US, cabinet officials used Signal to discuss military strikes in Yemen, adding a reporter to the chat by mistake. The conversation quickly turned from emoji-filled incompetence to existential dread. Denise Hamilton called it what it is: “a cabinet of convenience and fealty,” while Aram Fischer reminded us that when the “vibes” run the state, reality bites hard. Bombs fell, 53 people died, and somehow no one resigned.Across the pond, Chancellor Rachel Reeves delivered a Spring Budget that sounds progressive until you read it. Welfare cuts, frozen benefits, and a forecast of a quarter-million more people—including 50,000 children—falling into poverty. All while wealth remains virtually untaxed. The panel didn't hold back. “Tories in all but name,” Roifield declared, with Steve admitting he didn't vote Labour to get austerity rebranded with a red rosette.Takeaway: If this episode had a moral, it's this: Government by vibes kills. And Labour's soft technocracy might just be Tories on mute.5 Pull Quotes:“This is not a cabinet of excellence. This is a cabinet of convenience and fealty.” – Denise Hamilton“They added a journalist to the Signal thread and thought, ‘Eh, it's fine.' That's where we're at.” – Aram Fischer“Nothing really matters as long as the vibes are right.” – Aram Fischer, summarising MAGA foreign policy“Labour's playing a long game with no message. That's a strategy with a short shelf life.” – Leah Brown“You knew what the Tories stood for. I've got no idea what this lot stand for.” – Roifield Brown Hosted on Acast. In a recent episode of Palestine Declassified, hosts Chris Williamson and David Miller were joined by The Grayzone editor Max Blumenthal to dissect the controversial role of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). The discussion centered on the CCDH's efforts to suppress pro-Palestinian voices on social media, particularly under the leadership of Elon Musk. The episode shed light on the organization's ties to Zionist interests and its broader agenda to silence dissent against Israeli policies. The first segment featured Latifa Abouchakra, who detailed The Grayzone's investigative work exposing the CCDH as a dishonest entity masquerading as a watchdog. The report revealed how the CCDH, despite its claims of combating hate speech, systematically targets and erases content supportive of Palestinian rights, effectively aligning itself with the Zionist regime's propaganda efforts. The second segment delved into the CCDH's extensive network of connections, including its links to the British Labour Party, the Community Security Trust, the Pears Foundation, and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in the United States. These ties underscore the organization's role as a tool for advancing pro-Israel narratives while undermining legitimate criticism of Israeli actions. The episode highlighted how these relationships enable the CCDH to wield significant influence over digital platforms, shaping public discourse in favor of Zionist interests.Overall, the program provides a critical examination of the CCDH's activities, exposing its role in the broader campaign to delegitimize and suppress pro-Palestinian advocacy. By connecting the dots between the CCDH and its institutional backers, Palestine Declassified offered a compelling case for how digital censorship is weaponized to serve political agendas, particularly those aligned with the Zionist movement. This episode is a must-watch for anyone concerned about free speech and the ongoing struggle for Palestinian rights.Read The Grayzone's reporting on leaked emails from the CCHD

In July 2024, British Labour cruised to victory, it won two-thirds of the seats in the House of Commons. But for one well-placed writer, there's a risk in such a triumph.

Glenn Beck Special. Election 2024: How the Global Elite Control What You See, Think, and Feel We're now less than two weeks away from a monumental election, and the media, Big Tech, and global elites — including British Labour Party members — are all working in overdrive to get Kamala Harris elected. This “propaganda industrial complex” is laying the groundwork for post-election censorship, but Glenn exposed it all in his new book, “Propaganda Wars.” In this episode of "Glenn TV," he reviews some of the highlights: Why are elites so obsessed with censorship? How far will they go to ensure that Donald Trump doesn't win in November? And how can the average American learn to cut through the propaganda and find the TRUTH? Glenn also reviews some of the latest attacks on free speech, including the British-based Center for Countering Digital Hate's targeting of X and Elon Musk and Kamala Harris' terrifying use of the vice presidential office to compare Trump to Hitler. Plus, the co-author of “Propaganda Wars,” Justin Haskins, joins to ask a disturbing question: Will this election's “October surprise” be a deepfake? Fresh off the back of new Labour Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer accepting free suits and glasses (is it just me or is accepting free glasses even weirder than accepting free suits?), the Deputy Leader of the British Labour Party accepted a free apartment in New York. I can understand that a little bit more readily. You're in New York, a donor says, "I've got a place, stay there", you needed a place to stay anyway, so it kind of makes sense. Whereas most people who need reading glasses buy them for themselves. Clothing is tricky, to the extent a spouse gets added to the mix and you are expected to look a certain way. It is expected you can't turn up looking the same every time, so you need more clothes than normal people. But where is the line between an allowance and simply taking the mickey? MPs aren't paid all that much here, or in Britain, or Australia, which is where their Prime Minister now finds himself in his own hole after the revelations he organised a bunch of free upgrades on Qantas by allegedly going directly to then-CEO Alan Joyce. This was for personal travel for himself and his family. As Prime Minister you travel first class, if not on the Airforce jet, but your son travels like anyone else. Or they do unless Dad has been on the phone to the CEO. How these people think this is normal I have no idea. How they think they will get away with it is beyond me. Public life these days is transparent. You can't do anything without a snitch, or a leak, or a WhatsApp going astray. Is it a Labour thing? A left-wing thing? How does Starmer and Albanese explain freebies you and I would never get? How do they defend freebies from an already exulted position? Back here Luxon got a bagging for doing nothing wrong, apart from being successful enough to own a few houses. What would we have done if he had been upgrading himself, or accepting free suits and Amanda turns up in new eyewear paid for by party supporters? Public service once meant serving the public, not using your position to upgrade yourself, whether for aviation or sartorially. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Moldova has voted to join the EU – A referendum won by less than a single percentage point. It's less clear when the EU's citizens get their vote on whether they want to house a very poor, seriously divided, minority-Russian post-Soviet state. Surely this is the moment the eastwards expansion runs aground in the geopolitical reality? Meanwhile, China and India have quietly settled their long-running border dispute in the Himalayas. Far from the recent era where rival troops would run at each other with sticks - or even the notorious 2020 microwaving incident - this bizarre superpower friction seems to have been cleared up inside a few paragraphs. Is this proof positive that the BRICS are turning their attentions outwards? Finally, the story that the Trump campaign has launched a complaint against the British Labour party has spooked the Starmer regime. Staffers campaigning for their Democratic Party cognates seemed like a cute idea and a nice holiday. But if these naive limeys wanted to know how strictly Americans take their electoral laws, they should have dropped a dime to Steve Bannon's prison cell. Sometimes a logo tells you everything you need to know about an organization, and when it comes to the Fabian Society they clearly let the people know that they have hostile intentions in disguise, and intend to move slowly to achieve their goals. Formed as an organization to publicly push “Democratic Socialism”, their true intentions were much more devious and included an organized blueprint for a one-world government financed by some of the most Imperialistic ruling families of the time and organized by the so-called great thinkers of their era. This isn't some long-forgotten group that lives on in folklore, it is actually been rebranded as the British Labour Party and Democratic Socialists of America, led by the feeble-minded AOC. God help us all if these people achieve their plans for world domination. While the Labour Party may have triumphed in the recent British parliamentary elections, the real victors may have been Israel. Israel and its lobby have deep connections to the British Labour Party, headed by Sir Keir Starmer, and are likely pleased to see him come to power. On today's episode of “The Watchdog,” Lowkey is joined by John McEvoy to discuss his work uncovering Israel's surprisingly firm grip over the British political system. John McEvoy is an investigative journalist for Declassified UK, a media outlet covering British foreign policy and intelligence agencies' true role around the world. While Labour has achieved a landslide victory, McEvoy warns that this was not because of widespread public support. Instead, it was down to a split in the vote between the Conservatives and their far-right challengers, Reform U.K. And while the public yearns for change, Starmer has been steadfast in his refusal to adopt bold policies to deliver what the people want. “Keir Starmer is poised to destroy a lot of hopes of British people and those who have wrongly invested their hopes in him. And that's a recipe for political disaster and a wider shift to the right here,” McEvoy told Lowkey. Perhaps even more worrying is the level of Israeli influence within the Labour Party. Pro-Israel money has flooded in; more than half of the new cabinet has been bankrolled by the British pro-Israel lobby, McEvoy's recent study revealed.Starmer has repeatedly refused to condemn Israel or do anything to concretely support a ceasefire in Gaza. His Labour Party has also elevated some of the most shameless propagandists into key positions. One example is Luke Akehurst, the former director of the pressure group, We Believe in Israel. Throughout its bombardment of Gaza, the U.K. has remained one of Israel's closest allies. Arms exports have increased since October 7, and London has continued to provide diplomatic cover for the genocide. It was a massive victory for Keir Starmer and British Labour in the UK election. Now the new Prime Minister has to get down to work and deliver on his promises after defeating Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives. And: More than 9,000 workers at Ontario's provincial liquor retailer are on strike. It's the first walkout in LCBO's history. The union is fighting against the government's plan to allow grocery and convenience stores to sell ready-to-drink cocktails. But some in the industry say expanding privatisation is the right move. Plus: Thieves stealing copper is a major problem for telecom companies, but it's also affecting customers. When copper phone lines are ripped out, thousands of people lose connectivity, and even access to emergency services. Some are calling for tougher laws and harsher penalties.

Rather than uniting to fight our common enemy, our movement has been diverted time and time again by internal attacks: attacks aimed, disgracefully, at the very sections which have fought so bravely to carry out Labour Party and TUC policies by battling to save jobs, industries, communities and services.Margaret Thatcher has been absolutely clear in recognizing her enemy - it is socialism and she has openly declared her intention of wiping it off the British agenda.
The British Labour Party is on the cusp of possibly the biggest victory in its history. But for one well-placed writer, there's a risk in such a triumph. Labour MP John Cruddas takes a look at one of the party's most influential but forgotten traditions.
Today on the show, Fareed speaks with David Lammy, British Labour politician and Shadow Foreign Secretary, about the upcoming UK election in which Labour is expected to win in a landslide. They also discuss what a Labour government's approach to a second Trump presidency would look like, as well as the UK's foreign policy amid wars in the Gaza and Ukraine. Then, The Economist's Paris bureau chief Sophie Pedder joins the show to break down President Macron's decision to call snap elections in France, and the risk this gamble poses for his party's political future. Finally, economics professor and author of “The Longevity Imperative” Andrew Scott explains how to navigate the promises and the challenges that come with our increasingly long lifespans, from promoting healthy aging to building multi-phase careers. The Supreme Court is getting a heavy serving of first amendment social media cases. Gus Hurwitz covers two that made the news last week. In the first, Justice Barrett spoke for a unanimous court in spelling out the very factbound rules that determine when a public official may use a platform's tools to suppress critics posting on his or her social media page. Gus and I agree that this might mean a lot of litigation, unless public officials wise up and simply follow the Court's broad hint: If you don't want your page to be treated as official, simply say up top that it isn't official. The second social media case making news was being argued as we recorded. Murthy v. Missouri appealed a broad injunction against the US government pressuring social media companies to take down posts the government disagrees with. The Court was plainly struggling with a host of justiciability issues and a factual record that the government challenged vigorously. If the Court reaches the merits, it will likely address the question of when encouraging the suppression of particular speech slides into coerced censorship. Gus and Jeffrey Atik review the week's biggest news – the House has passed a bill to force the divestment of TikTok, despite the outcry of millions of influencers. Whether the Senate will be quick to follow suit is deeply uncertain. Melanie Teplinsky covers the news that data about Americans' driving habits is increasingly being sent to insurance companies to help them adjust their rates. Melanie also describes the FCC's new Cyber Trust Mark for IOT devices. Like the Commission, our commentators think this is a good idea. Gus takes us back to more contest territory: What should be done about the use of technology to generate fake pictures, especially nude fake pictures. We also touch on a UK debate about a snippet of audio that many believe is a fake meant to embarrass a British Labour politician. Gus tells us the latest news from the SVR's compromise of a Microsoft network. This leads us to a meditation on the unintended consequences of the SEC's new cyber incident reporting requirements. Jeffrey explains the bitter conflict over app store sales between Apple and Epic games. Melanie outlines a possible solution to the lack of cybersecurity standards (not to mention a lack of cybersecurity) in water systems. It's interesting but it's too early to judge its chances of being adopted. Melanie also tells us why JetBrains and Rapid7 have been fighting over “silent patching.” Finally, Gus and I dig into Meta's high-stakes fight with the FTC, and the rough reception it got from a DC district court.

Welcome to Episode 42 of Fully Automated. This is a repost of Episode 11 of Class Unity Transmissions (posted on Dec 17, 2023). In this episode, we are joined by Efraim Carlebach to discuss the 10-year anniversary of the publication of Mark Fisher's seminal essay, Exiting the Vampire Castle. Published on November 24, 2013, Fisher's essay is remembered today as a powerful shot across the bows of what was known at the time as the “call out” left. In particular, the essay was a response to a recent controversy stemming from the appearance of “working class” comedian Russell Brand on the BBC's Newsnight program. Feminists expressed outraged at the BBC's choice to interview Brand at all, noting the sexually insensitive nature of his content. Fisher repudiated these critics as “PoshLeft moralizers” and witch-hunting scolds, leveraging Brand's apparent deafness to the linguistic norms of the middle-class gender lexicon in exchange for online clout. In their insistence that Brand's white male privilege made him one of the oppressors, they had blinded themselves to the foundational role of working-class culture in revolutionary politics. Fisher's defense of the working-class culture notwithstanding, his position on the priority of working-class politics was more ambiguous. In this discussion, we start by trying to situate Fisher as a left anti-capitalist. After his suicide in 2017, Fisher's work on “capitalist realism” became something of a totem for the millennial left. However, as Carlebach argues, Fisher was never fully clear on what he meant by the term. On the one hand, he often referred to the idea — frequently attributed to Fredric Jameson — that we are so profoundly mentally stuck in within capitalist ideology that “it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.” On the other, he would sometimes make the interesting move of saying that capitalist realism was specifically “a pathology of the left.” Ultimately, the ambiguity was short-lived. Where Fisher has once posted approvingly of Adam Curtis's documentary HyperNormalization, a pointed criticism of the counter-cultural left, the defeat of Jermey's Corbyn's leadership of the British Labour Party would see this theme would soon drop out of his work. The culturalist nature of Fisher's defense of the working class folded easily enough into Fisher's late-life return to the New Left, the politics of “consciousness raising,” and the idea of what he called “acid communism.” If you enjoyed this show, please leave a kind review on your podcast app. You call follow the show on Twitter/X: @occupyirtheory

Be An ActivistI had the privilege of attending many of the debates and discussions which are a unique and vital part of Féile an Phobail. Well done to all the participants and in particular to the organisers and the stewards who ensured that everything worked smoothly. Thanks also to the venues which welcomed us all.I want to touch briefly on the remarks made by Terry O'Sullivan and Jeremy Corbyn at separate events, particularly on the importance of organising civic society. Jeremy, a former leader of the British Labour Party and Terry the General Secretary Emeritus of The Laborers' International Union of North America are wonderful advocates for the imperative of organising social and political movements to bring about deep rooted and positive change. Rita O'Hare and Áras Uí ChonghaileÁras Uí Chonghaile on the Falls Road was formally opened by Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D Higgins in April 2019. Through its historic artefacts, art work, innovative technology and story-telling it teaches us of the life and times of James Connolly – 1916 executed leader. Last Thursday a large number of family, friends and comrades of Rita O'Hare came together to unveil a plaque in Áras Uí Chonghaile in her memory. Without her unique contribution this important project might never have succeeded.Internment and mass incarcerationWednesday 9 August was the anniversary of one of the most disastrous decisions in recent Irish history. On the 9 August 1971 the Unionist Regime and British government introduced internment without trial. It was a watershed moment in the history of the northern state as hundreds were dragged from their homes, thousands of families were forced to flee to refugee camps, and many of those lifted in the early morning raids were beaten.
