Exploring Trauma and Healing with Dion Jensen Episode Summary In this powerful episode of Seriously, What Were You Thinking?, I sit down with Dion Jensen to discuss trauma, mental health, and the transformative power of nature and cultural connection. Dion shares his remarkable journey from a military and policing background through personal grief and transformation, offering profound insights into how energy, emotions, and healing are interconnected. Together, we explore the concept of "subconscious bodyguards" – the mechanisms that protect us from emotional pain – and how they can be reimagined to support healthier responses. We also discuss the stigma surrounding mental health, the complexities of trauma, and the importance of authentic relationships in recovery. This episode highlights the role of Maori cultural perspectives, nature, and practical tools for managing suicidal thoughts, with a focus on connection, love, and growth as the keys to overcoming life's challenges. Key Takeaways Dion's unique perspective: His military and policing background informs his understanding of trauma and grief. Trauma as energy overload: Emotions are “energy in motion” and must be processed. The healing power of nature: Time spent outdoors fosters peace and clarity. Cultural identity and connection: These are crucial to mental health and resilience. Authenticity matters: Genuine relationships are essential for recovery. Stigma hinders healing: Breaking down barriers enables open, honest conversations. No comparison in trauma: Everyone's experience is personal; there's no “trauma Olympics.” Rest is critical: Healing cannot happen in the midst of a crisis. Love and connection are foundational: They are the heart of recovery and growth. Hope must be actionable: It drives meaningful change when paired with a plan. Sound Bites “Your story is fascinating.” “The army becomes your family.” “Nature is so important to us.” “Emotions are just energy in motion.” “Trauma is an overload of energy.” “We don't play trauma Olympics here.” “The relationship is the key to healing.” “You can't heal in crisis.” “Hope without a plan is a wish.” Chapters 00:00 – Introduction and Cosmic Connections Setting the stage for a transformative conversation. 02:54 – Dion's Journey and Military Background Insights from Dion's military and policing career. 05:50 – Cultural Connections and Nature's Role How Maori culture and nature play a role in healing. 08:48 – Understanding Trauma and Energy The relationship between trauma and emotional energy. 12:09 – The Impact of Trauma on Life How trauma uniquely affects each person. 15:02 – Navigating Grief and Support Systems Dion's personal experience with grief and the power of connection. 17:53 – The Stigma of Mental Health and Suicide Breaking down barriers to open conversations. 21:10 – Experiences in Policing and Trauma Lessons in resilience from Dion's policing career. 23:57 – The Power of the Mind and Coping Mechanisms Exploring subconscious protective mechanisms. 27:11 – Authenticity and Connection in Healing The necessity of trust and genuine relationships. 32:16 – Facing Claustrophobia: A Personal Journey Pete shares a personal struggle with trauma and its impact. 35:38 – Understanding Subconscious Bodyguards Reframing subconscious protective responses. 38:30 – Navigating Trauma and Emotional Responses Practical approaches to building resilience. 41:57 – The Importance of Rest and Reflection Why rest is essential for recovery. 44:12 – Transforming Subconscious Bodyguards Using these mechanisms as a source of strength. 49:19 – The Role of Love and Connection in Healing How connection drives recovery. 52:43 – Understanding Suicidal Thoughts The importance of actionable hope. 58:49 – Using Personal Experience to Serve Others Turning personal struggles into empowerment for others. Finding Meaning in Grief: Lessons from Life's Challenges Episode Summary In this deeply moving episode of Seriously, What Were You Thinking?, I sit down with a remarkable guest to explore the profound impact of grief, resilience, and finding meaning amidst life's adversities. Together, we discuss the raw realities of losing a loved one, the discomfort society often has with grief, and the transformative power of facing life's most difficult moments directly. We reflect on lessons from a young daughter's life and legacy, the importance of staying authentic in the face of hardship, and how nature, humour, and community can help us navigate grief. This conversation invites listeners to embrace grief as a process rather than avoiding it, finding hope and strength in life's small, beautiful moments – like the sunrise after a dark night. Key Takeaways Grief transforms us: It deepens our perspective and brings new meaning to life. Language is crucial: Open, clear conversations about death make processing grief healthier. Celebrate loved ones: Speaking their names honours their memory. Nature heals: Spending time outdoors offers peace and grounding in difficult times. Be authentic: Stay true to yourself, no matter the circumstances. Resilience can be learned: Tools like humour, mindfulness, and community support ease challenges. Grief doesn't disappear: It evolves over time but remains part of who we are. Legacy is powerful: Turning grief into purposeful action brings hope. Sound Bites “Grief never goes away, but it becomes part of who you are.” “Speak their names. We want to remember them, not silence them.” “Nature brings peace – it's alive, and it heals us.” “Life's preciousness comes from its finiteness.” “When you can't fix the pain, just be present with someone.” Chapters 00:00 – Introduction A warm welcome and gratitude for this meaningful conversation. 03:42 – The Complexity of Grief Exploring why grief is so challenging and society's struggles with it. 08:15 – Honouring Life and Death The lessons a young life can teach about resilience and living fully. 15:32 – The Role of Language in Grief Why clear and direct language is vital when discussing death, especially with children. 20:48 – The Healing Power of Nature How nature provides solace and grounding amidst life's chaos. 28:10 – Humour and Resilience Using humour as a tool to cope with overwhelming loss. 35:45 – The Evolution of Grief Over Time How grief changes with time but remains a chronic condition with moments of joy. 42:33 – Building a Legacy Through Action Turning personal tragedy into purposeful action, including founding a charity. 49:20 – Finding Peace and Contentment The importance of authenticity and staying true to oneself. 54:05 – Final Reflections and Invitation Encouraging community, authenticity, and the power of sharing stories. Call to Action This episode is a heartfelt reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of finding meaning, even in life's toughest moments. Please share this episode with anyone who may need inspiration or support. Don't forget to subscribe, leave a review, and visit Kenzie's Gift to learn more about supporting families facing grief and serious illness. We play a wild, confusing mess of international sounds, stretching from the birth of recorded music to something we heard two days ago. We do our best to ignore the normal, accentuate the weird, and ignore borders, boundaries and time-zone. Your hosts Ziv Lode and Dan Abbott travel back in time to the year 2021 and dig out the best tracks we didn't manage to squeeze into the shows. Which can only mean one thing: It's the Begilufin SPARE PARTS show! 60 minutes of magical musical near-misses. Our themed playlists are improvised live on air meaning always leftovers and inevitably one of us is whining “I can't believe I didn't play THAT!” as we exit the studio. Join us and witness the history of Begilufin being shamelessly revised before your very ears. ## Playlist 1. Professor Longhair & Earl King - Big Chief 2. Latins 80 - Inquinamento # Begilufin Begilufin is an hour long radio show broadcast live twice a month from the heart Berlin on the station Pi Radio. On Begilufin we play a wild, confusing mess of international sounds, stretching from the birth of recorded music to something we heard two days ago. We do our best to ignore the normal, accentuate the weird, and ignore borders, boundaries and time-zones. Each show revolves around a central theme and then we surprise each other (and you, dear listener) with our selections live on air. Since you ask, ‘Begilufin' is a Hebrew word meaning intoxicated, inebriated, drunk, sozzled or smashed - a perfect description of the delirious off-centre mix of crazed music we like to spin on the show or indeed the effect it might have on your ears. Begilufin was created by Ziv Lode in 2010. Ziv was joined by Dan Abbott a couples of years later after a chance meeting in a kindergarten playground revealed a mutual love of the music of Erkin ‘The Turkish Hendrix' Koray. * https://www.mixcloud.com/begilufin/ * https://www.instagram.com/begilufinradio/

It’s episode 165 of Adobe & Teardrops! Thanks for sticking with me!   Well, everything is coming up Rachel this week. I’ve been on spring break. I joined a fantasy baseball league. I joined a queer softball league. Opening day is in less than an hour as I record this. We might be moving into a 2-bedroom apartment in the same building. Oh yeah -- things are good. Also, an interview with Hey, King!   Album of the Week: Hope Dunbar -- Sweetheartland   Hope Dunbar’s Sweetheartland. This is the kind of music I’ve been looking for since I started Adobe & Teardrops. Dunbar has an awesome heartland rock sound while staying true to herself, something that, frankly, I haven’t seen many women who go for that sound really succeed at. She’s a great storyteller, which we’ll hear on “What Were You Thinking,” and can really pull out the stops with “Evacuate,” which Patreon subscribers will hear. Elizabeth King -- “Living in the Last Days” (Living in the Last Days) (2:46) Cristina Vane -- “Blueberry Hill” (Nowhere Sounds Lovely) (5:55) Kai Mata -- “Wine” (Single) (9:55) Henry Conlon -- “Lucy” (Single) (13:59) Valerie June -- “Stay” (The Moon and the Stars: Prescriptions for Dreamers) (19:00) Hope Dunbar -- “What Were You Thinking” (Sweetheartland) (22:01) Scott Making Cents -- “Profile Picture” (Dog EP) (25:28) Andrew Waite -- “Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That” (Single) (28:55) al Riggs -- “Ragged But Right” (I Got A Big Electric Fan To Keep Me Cool While I Sleep) (33:20) Amina Shareef Ali -- “Honest Song” (In The Dark (Awake Of Course)) (36:33) The Barker Brothers -- “Thinkin’ June” (Single) (39:41) Claire Kelly -- “The Restless and the Reckless” (The Scenic Route) (42:39) Hey, King! -- Interview and “Half Alive.” (Read the rest of the interview here.) How many of you can imagine completely changing your everything in your life? This is what Ember Swift did. For years, she carved out a name for her politically-conscious, alternative folk band called Ember Swift. Yes this project was named after Ember herself, but it was mostly a partnership between Ember and violinist Lyndell Montgomery. As a folk duo, Ember Swift earned fans all over the globe, until one day, she realized that it was not enough. Ember decided that she needed to pursue her degree in Asian Studies and she gave it all up to make a pilgrimage to China. The partnership known as Ember Swift did not survive, but she had followed her heart and a new musical venture was born. Ember created Lentic, a folktronica project inspired by her love of China and a longstanding fascination with electronic music. Listen to Ember tell her amazing story! Welcome to our interview segment of The Tour Bus Music Show. On this episode we will feature Winbourne from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We caught up with the band short after they returned from their performance at South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. Winbourne was kind enough to take some time away from their rehearsals at the Healing Place Dream Center in Baton Rouge and let us in on what has been going on with the group, their collective history, information on their current EP and the upcoming release later this year of their full length LP.  Our interview is about 1 ½ hours in length including music and was interesting, entertaining, and informative. Over the course of the interview we feature four songs off of their 2010 EP entitled “As We Are”. The songs we feature are (In order): “Let Me Love You, Street Signs, Easy and What Were You Thinking”. The background music in the beginning of the interview is an instrumental version of “Retrospect” We were not only impressed with their music, but with each of them. Their personalities, charm, and genuineness as individuals made the interview a pleasure in itself. We at Audios Maximus Media Network recommend that you make the opportunity to see them live as well as purchasing and adding their music to your collection. They are defiantly worth hearing time and again. Links to their sites online are: www.winbournemusic.com www.youtube.com/winbournevideo www.twitter.com/#!/winbournemusic www.ilike.com/artist/winbourne www.facebook.com/winbournemusic?ref=tf www.winbournemusic.tumblr.com www.myspace.com/winbournemusic Their EP is available at many music retailers online including Amazon and iTunes. ***Winbourne was founded in 2008 and has been setting their audiences on fire with their energy, talent, and passion for what they do. Music…and they do it well. Jordan, Chris (Doogie), Matt, Torrance and Terry are committed to their craft and it shows in everything they do. In our research on local music acts the first thing that drew us to the group was their music. It was positive, well written, masterfully arranged & produced. Winbourne has been featured in The City Social, Tiger Weekly, The LSU Daily Reveille, 225 Magazine, and The Advocate. The band’s sound can be described as as alternative rock. Winbourne entered the Baton Rouge music scene by storm playing at every popular local venue including Chelsea’s, The Varsity and college gigs not to mention they have joined forces with other popular local bands such as Jake Smith. With a rapidly growing fan base flocking to its Myspace, Twitter, and Facebook web pages, Winbourne has received avid local support of their originals. Fans’ favorites include “Easy,” “Let Me Love You,” and “Street Signs”. Fresh out of the studio the band’s focus is spreading their music to the world on their new pilot EP album “As We Are”. The six track record is now available on iTunes and at live shows. Their loyal south Louisiana fan base now spreads outwards in hot response to their EP and enthralling live performance. Winbourne is preparing to get back in the studio to release a full length LP in the spring of 2011. In the mean time they continue to play locally and regionally as well as prepare for stage time in a slew of music festivals within the southeastern U.S. Whether blasting their live performances from the stage or rocking their “As We Are” EP through your own speakers, Winbourne will inspire you to Live Loud. ***Used with permission. Bob and Linda struggle through the worst Michigan February on record. And so do their animals, when an icefall from the barn roof demolishes their two outdoor pens. Fortunately, the critters were safe indoors. Prospering in the miserable weather is a Yellow-rumped Warbler which Bob considered to be unusual for the time of year, but not extraordinarily so. However, a sharp-eyed birder saw Bob's warbler photo online and tentatively identified it as the western 'Audubon' variety of the bird, which has only been recorded twice previously in Michigan. Hear the tale of an expert birder scouring the woods for 'Bob's warbler.' Can he somehow find the tiny bird that Bob hadn't seen in days? Meanwhile, Linda talks about sighting another seldom-seen bird, a Long-eared Owl, in an episode of What Were You Thinking? that's strictly for the passerines.
