Virginia Evans and the story behind the story of her runaway debut novel, The Correspondent, is one of those that helps us writers keep getting out of bed in the morning and back to the page. It's an anomaly on every level. But it's embedded with the lessons we talk about every day on this show — perseverance, resilience, and immunity from rejection, the importance of writing the story only you can tell and writing for writing's sake and not publication's sake. In many ways, The Correspondent breaks some conventional writing rules. But in its breaking, its tapped into something universal, relatable, and loved by well over 2 million readers and counting. When The Correspondent came out in April of 2025, it was not an instant NYT bestseller. It gained momentum by word-of-mouth, by wonderful booksellers, book clubs, and maybe some Ann Patchett pixie dust. The book had been out for eight months before hitting the NYT bestseller list, where it's been for 41 weeks and counting. Usually it's Oprah who boosts a book with her book club picks. My guest this month is Bob Cluness, whom I am thrilled to welcome back to the platform. Bob recently published a new article in the journal Correspondences, “The Working-Class Magus: Class, Politics, and Occult Power in John Constantine: Hellblazer” and he was so kind to talk with me about it. His current PhD project deals with the relationship between esotericism and accelerationism expressed within UK subcultures in the late 20th century, the core research being a comparative and historical discursive analysis of the UK chaos magic(k) scene and the CCRU. Cami Clark, the wife of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, came under scrutiny after previously undisclosed correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein surfaced showing that she had approached him about investing in an adult-content business she was trying to build. The emails dated back to the early 2010s, years after Epstein had pleaded guilty in Florida to charges involving a minor. Clark's venture was pitched as a female-oriented “luxury porn” company designed to challenge what she viewed as a male-dominated industry, and the correspondence showed her trying to cultivate Epstein as a potential investor. At one point Epstein appeared not to remember who she was, replying to an email by asking her identity, but Clark continued the exchange and maintained contact with him as she pursued financing. The resurfaced messages attracted attention not because they established that Clark participated in Epstein's crimes, but because they showed yet another ambitious entrepreneur seeking Epstein's money and access despite his already public status as a convicted sex offender.The correspondence took on added significance because Clark later became an influential figure behind the scenes in Silicon Valley. She married Amodei in 2022 and, although she has held no formal position at Anthropic, reporting has described her as an important adviser and networker who helped connect Amodei with powerful investors and figures in the technology world. Her earlier dealings with Epstein therefore provided another example of how Epstein remained socially and financially useful to people operating in elite circles even after his 2008 conviction. There was no reporting that Epstein ultimately invested in Clark's company, and the emails did not show Clark participating in his trafficking operation, but they did reveal that his criminal history was apparently not enough to prevent her from pursuing him as a source of capital. Newly released documents tied to the Epstein files shed light on the long-mysterious blue-and-white striped building on Jeffrey Epstein's private island, Little Saint James. Correspondence shows that Epstein repeatedly referred to the structure as a “mosque,” although its intended purpose shifted over time—at various points being described as a music room, chapel, pavilion, or spa-like bathhouse. Despite those changing plans, Epstein consistently pushed for Middle Eastern-inspired design elements, including specific tiles, a golden dome, and interior features modeled after Islamic architecture.The documents also reveal that Epstein went to unusual lengths to acquire authentic Islamic artifacts, including highly significant items linked to Mecca's Kaaba—Islam's holiest site—such as pieces of the sacred Kiswa cloth. For twenty years, Christian Wiman has lived with a rare, incurable cancer. In the fall of 2022, during a stretch when the illness was especially bad, he wrote to his friend and Yale colleague Miroslav Volf: “I don't know what faith means anymore. I'm a 56-year-old with a pile of books behind me and an experimental bone marrow transplant ahead of me, and I don't know what faith means.” That letter became the seed of an extended correspondence between the poet and the theologian, now published as Glimmerings: Letters on Faith between a Poet and a Theologian. In this special collaboration with Arc Magazine, editor Mark Oppenheimer sits down with Volf and Wiman to unpack the letters that grew out of their long friendship and years of walking together through New Haven. They discuss what it means to love God, why doubt and absence might be constitutive elements of faith and presence rather than its opposite, and how a terminal diagnosis changed what each of them was willing to say and how freely they said it. They also trace the thinkers who shaped their thinking along the way, from Simone Weil's account of attention to Etty Hillesum's wartime writing, to Abraham Joshua Heschel's theology of the prophets, and they wrestle openly with where their understandings of Jesus Christ converge and diverge. Along the way, Wiman reflects on writing from a hospital room at Massachusetts General, on discovering that his fear was never death itself but the fear of dying without God, and on why grief, not fear, is what remains even after that fear falls away. Belief seems to me a matter of the institution and ascending to creeds and things like that. I think most of my theological thinking is existentially motivated. It's motivated by the kind of inner logic of the trust in which I'm involved. Most of the books that I wrote, I've written for myself. I'm one of those writers who doesn't have an audience. There is grace in my life if I can just keep my eyes open enough to see it. His mistake in some ways lets him see that the world is right, that there's a rightness to the world. What becomes clear is one's longing for God. Everything is stripped away and very little else seems to matter. What I want most in my life is the presence of God. And I fear dying without that. Just being alone at the moment of death. I was worried that he won't have God in that situation of need because attention might be lacking. Recent revelations from Jeffrey Epstein's files have reignited scrutiny of Andrew Mountbatten‑Windsor's relationship with the disgraced financier, including new details surrounding a Russian woman that Epstein allegedly offered to set him up with. Newly released emails show that Epstein described this woman — identified in some reports as a model — as “beautiful” and “trustworthy” and proposed introducing her to Andrew in 2010, shortly after Epstein's release from house arrest, a period when Andrew had publicly claimed to have ended his association with him. Correspondence also suggests that Andrew continued to maintain some level of contact with Epstein, even inviting him to Buckingham Palace for dinner and appearing open to arrangements that blurred personal, social, and potentially exploitative boundaries amid a broader climate of scandal.These revelations come on top of longstanding allegations from other women that they were trafficked by Epstein to meet or engage sexually with Andrew — most notably Virginia Giuffre, who claimed Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell forced her into sexual encounters with Andrew on multiple occasions in the early 2000s, beginning when she was a minor; that claim was settled out of court in 2022 without his admitting wrongdoing.
