Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Wednesday, Feb 14 Parkersburg's new children's museum sees tremendous success in its first year. The WV Hive announces a training session for businesses in the New River Gorge region. And Cass Scenic Railroad's popular Parade of Steam returns June 15…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV LIVING – Discovery World on Market is the product of one simple question: “How can we affect more people?” This was the question the Ross Foundation was asking in 2018 as the organization looked at its charitable investments in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Doors officially opened to the public last year to the one-of-a kind, hands-on experience children's museum. Located in Downtown Parkersburg, Discovery World is designed primarily for ages 0–10 with a focus on playing and growing together with family and friends. The 30,000-square-foot facility is organized by adventure area with an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) activities. The opening of the children's museum has had a significant impact on visitation on the Parkersburg area, according to Mark Lewis, executive director of the Greater Parkersburg Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We are ecstatic over the success that Discovery World on Market has seen in its first year of operation,” Lewis said. “Not only has Discovery World on Market introduced many thousands of new visitors to Parkersburg, but pairing a visit to Discovery World with our other family-friendly attraction, Blennerhassett Island State Park, provides a great weekend getaway for families with young children.” Read more: https://wvliving.com/discovery-world-on-market-is-a-project-from-the-heart/ #2 – From LOOTPRESS – The West Virginia Hive, the entrepreneurship program of the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority, has announced a regional initiative to improve customer service among frontline businesses. Judy Moore, executive director of the WV Hive and deputy director of NRGRDA, said the WV Hive is partnering with regional chambers of commerce, convention and visitor bureaus, business leaders and others to promote the March 25-26 training sessions, titled “Growing Your Business Through a Culture of Service.” “Every dollar people spend in our region and every person who decides to relocate here or return for more visits is an economic multiplier for our community and economic betterment,” Moore said. The training session will kick off March 25-26 with a customized and personalized training workshop at the Tamarack Conference Center. The training session – valued at $1,500 – is available to registrants at only $50 per person, plus taxes and fees (including snacks, beverages and lunch) thanks to the support of the WV Hive. Register to attend here. Learn more: https://www.lootpress.com/west-virginia-hive-launches-regional-culture-of-service-mission/ #3 – From LOOTPRESS – Train lovers, save the date. Cass Scenic Railroad's annual Parade of Steam returns on Saturday, June 15. The legendary locomotives will begin staging at the Cass Depot at 9:30 a.m. and the parade will officially begin at 10 a.m. and last for about an hour. The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Vernon County: https://bit.ly/3MlEDXWThe Cabin is also brought to you by Group Health Trust: https://bit.ly/3JMizCXCampfire Conversation:Eric, Ana, and Jake welcome Chelsey Knuth into The Cabin for a heady look at Wisconsin's indoor museums, since it's a good time of year to be indoors when doing casual things. Chelsey is known to over 50,000 IG followers as The Wisconsinista, and her extensive travels around the state give her a solid level of expertise and another perspective. All four Cabin dwellers dive in to some of their favorite museums to explore, including Chelsey with some “must see” museums like the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Public Museum, Discovery World (complete with Wisconsin's largest aquarium), and the Harley-Davidson Museum for when you're in Wisconsin's largest city. For art, she recommends the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wausau; the Wisconsin Museum of Quilt & Fiber Arts in Cedarburg; and, in a twist, the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass in Neenah - for a more fragile yet just-as-stunning art. Chelsey also delved into children's museums, with great ones in Milwaukee, La Crosse, Green Bay, Madison, Eau Claire and more. On a more somber yet very historical note, the Peshtigo Fire Museum is a great stop once it opens again in spring. Hall of Fame Museums cover the Green Bay Packers, snowmobiles, even bobbleheads. Historic homes and mansions across state to explore include the Pabst Mansion and Villa Terrace in Milwaukee; House on the Rock and Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin home, both near Spring Green; the Paine Art Center in Oshkosh; the Fairlawn Mansion in Superior, and more. Ana delved into cultural museums, including the Menominee Tribe Cultural & Logging Museum; plus, Wisconsin's own State Capitol is a museum in itself. Eric discussed the National Brewery Museum in Potosi, the Wisconsin Automotive Museum in Hartford, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Green Bay's Neville Public Museum and National Railroad Museum, the Copper Culture Museum in Oconto, and - while there's an outdoor component too - the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward. Jake chimed in with the National Mustard Museum in Middleton and - perhaps most unique - Redner's Rescued Cat Figurine Museum in Menomonee Falls. How did Milwaukee build the massive peninsula now home to Harbor House and Discovery World? It's earliest roots date back to the mid 1800s and its current footprint was completed in 1960. On this episode we look into the past of Pier Wisconsin and its impact on the lakefront landscape.Read Bobby Tanzilo's full story at OnMilwaukee: https://onmilwaukee.com/articles/harbor-house-spelunking
This episode of the pod begins with David, Lindsay, and new host and producer, Elisabeth, discussing the kick off of Imagine's Arts and Economic Prosperity surveying out and about at local cultural events over the next year. In anticipation of speaking with Milwaukee Makers Market's creator and director Ryan Laessig, the trio reflects on what they would make if they were to moonlight as market makers. David has an on-brand vision of himself selling “momento mori” embroidered phrases like “In the midst of life...you're in death.” Lindsay contrasts David's morose aspirations by envisioning herself as a maker of cross-stitched phrases of lightness and inspiration. Meanwhile, Elisabeth's hypothetical small business will draw on her talents for creating multimodal portraits, and tiny clay fish fry fabrications. Starting around 13:00, Ryan Laessig joins the crew to discuss Milwaukee Makers Market—a local makers market that is a “celebration of the city's creators and our local community” and is hosted at Discovery World, Ivy House MKE, and at local breweries. In the course of the discussion, Ryan reflects on the ethos that drove him to graduate from artist and entrepreneur to becoming a leader within the maker scene, and building the beloved local festival as a platform to help artists thrive in our community. He shares about his motivation to become an organizer so he could sustain and improve upon models of makers markets that he experienced firsthand as an artist. And the MMM that has evolved is a truly local, free event—unlike some craft festivals run by distant corporations that charge covers and profit from Milwaukee talent, all the sales at MMM directly support makers and vendors within the local economy. Visitors to the MMM can also expect to get the benefit of engaging with the stories and personalities of the makers themselves. Though he is the leader and the face of the MMM, Ryan is foremost inspired to run the market as an engine for helping these local small business owners and artists to pursue and “achieve their dreams,” and contribute to a maker's scene that Milwaukee can be proud of. https://www.milwaukeemakersmarket.com/ (Milwaukee Maker's Market) Follow Milwaukee Maker's Market @https://www.instagram.com/milwaukeemakersmarket/?hl=en (milwaukeemakersmarket) and @https://www.facebook.com/MilwaukeeMakersMarket/ (MilwaukeeMakersMarket) Once again, we had an absurd number of shout-outs in this episode. Olympians Gwen Jorgensen, Laura Bennett among four triathletes to be inducted into USA Triathlon Hall of Fame COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Olympic gold medalist Gwen Jorgensen, two-time Olympian Laura Bennett and age group multisport athletes Lesley Cens-McDowell and Robert Plant today were announced as the 11th induction class of the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame. The USA Triathlon Hall Fame serves to recognize, honor and commemorate those individuals and groups who have demonstrated excellence in every aspect of multisport — thereby inspiring others to elevate their own performance, participation and community involvement. Founded in 2008, it has recognized the best performances and contributions in the sport's nearly 50-year history. This year's class brings the total number of inductees to 47. “We are so excited to add these iconic athletes to the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame,” said Steve Sutherland, Chair of the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame Executive Committee. “Gwen's incredible rise to becoming an Olympic gold medalist is a story for the ages, Laura twice represented the U.S. at the Olympics and has given back to the multisport community following her professional career and Lesley and Robert's age group performances throughout their long triathlon careers show us multisport is truly a lifelong sport. On top of their individual accomplishments, each of our inductees impart a love and passion for triathlon that continues to greatly influence the triathlon community.” The four inductees will be honored at a premier gala hosted by the USA Triathlon Foundation on Thursday, Aug. 4 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in conjunction with the 2022 Toyota USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships Aug. 6-7. The gala will be hosted at Discovery World, in the Roger & Judy Smith Family Pilot House, starting at 6:15 p.m. CT. What's New in the 303: Wholesome Sweeteners and Why it Supports Boulder Roubaix and Cycling Recently the Boulder Roubaix announced its title sponsor, the Wholesome Masters Racing Team. In its 30th edition the Boulder Roubiax is a classic race in the backroads of Boulder County. It's held every other year and according to race director Chris Grealish, “having Wholesome Sweetners AND the masters club involved has taken a lot of pressure off trying to get the race paid for as well as securing knowledgeable volunteers! Our bill with the Boulder County Sheriff's Department for traffic control is north of $8,000 paid in advance. That's just one cost. When asked what is new this year, Chris said, “we've added a lap to both the pro 1-2 and Collegiate cat A groups so they do almost 100 miles in the 5 laps”. He added when asked about every other year format, “We only hold the race every other year in an attempt to preserve the fragile relationship with the 500 homeowners along the racecourse”. We then caught up with President and founder of Wholesome Sweeteners and of Wholesome Masters Racing Team, Nigel Willerton to ask as few questions about sponsoring this event and cycling in general. He added when asked about the every other year format, “We only hold the race every other year in an attempt to preserve the fragile relationship with the 500 homeowners along the race course”. We then caught up with President and founder of Wholesome Sweeteners and of Wholesome Masters Racing Team, Nigel Willerton to ask as few questions about sponsoring this event and cycling in general. As director, she integrates grey and green infrastructure planning to recycle wastewater, reduce energy use/switch to renewables, and manage river and stormwater flooding. With a career spanning 30 years, Karen has held a number of planning positions in the public and private sectors in Wisconsin, Maine, and New York. She spent the first half of her career helping highway and airport runway projects move forward, and she's spending the second half ensuring that infrastructure is designed with nature in mind. She serves on several boards including the Water Quality Board of the International Joint Commission (Legacy Issues, U.S. Lead), Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust Inc., Northwest Side Community Development Corporation (Vice Chair), Discovery World, and the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Planning Association (Secretary). Notable Quotes: “I think mentorship is important for everyone. Sponsorship is important for anyone who wants and believes in the need for upward mobility. …” “And then the network is really important. It's not always one person who can make the magic happen, but it's who you know. And it's not like using people. It's more like using the good will of relationships you've transparently and genuinely built.” “Any leader who wants to be believed… they have to be able to say, ‘here's what it is!' And hang their laundry out.” “She said, ‘Mom, you're old enough you're going to die from old age, but I'm going to die from climate change.' I was floored; the next generation really understands what must be done. And so my advice to her was - you need to get a firm hold on the science, and the data of what you're going to be talking about.” “What's important is - to connect what's true and intrinsic to your soul, to what you want to do and what you want to change. Without that, you're just pushing paper and making widgets.” “Don't just innovate; let's talk about disruption!” Resources: Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District Site Mentioned: Christen Wood's Career Manifesto from Season 1 Water in Real Life by the H2Duo
In the last century Milwaukee’s downtown lakefront has changed drastically from a railyard which cut the city off from the waterfront, to the gleaming collection of civic buildings and spaces we enjoy today. Architect Jim Shields, FAIA traced the history of this dramatic transformation in a talk illustrated with historic drawings and photographs of Juneau Park, the Lincoln Memorial, the Saarinen War Memorial, the Kahler Wing expansion, the Calatrava Addition, Discovery World, and the most recent expansion to the Milwaukee Art Museum completed in 2015.In partnership with the Rotary Club of Milwaukee.
