Glacier National Park's namesake ice fields attract millions of visitors a year. Many wonder if they're making a funeral visit. Predictions that all the glaciers in the park will melt by 2030 or sooner have been floating around for a couple decades. That deadline now looms less than a decade away. What would happen if Glacier Park's glaciers disappeared? And what are some people thinking about as ways to save polar and glacial ice through the emerging field of geoengineering? On this episode, Rob Chaney, editor of the Missoulian newspaper, talks about work being done to keep glaciers around the world from shrinking.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
2022-10-21_68_Five for Friday Final Audio Hello colleagues and welcome to the Assistant Principal Podcast I'm your host, Frederick Busky. The goal of this podcast is to improve life and leadership for assistant principals. Today's episode of five for Friday recaps the strategic leadership emails for the week of October seventeenth through twenty first. With a caveat. Although we did indeed publish these emails this week, they are actually repeats from our list of greatest hits. This week as well as next week, I am in Kenya and so we just thought that this would be a fun way to kind of cover our bases, but also still continue to provide you some value while I'm away playing and learning and being in schools in Kenya. So I hope you enjoy this recap. The topic of Monday's message was leadership, isolation, and I hope you're subscribing to the daily list because one of my all time favorite photographs was included as part of this daily email and it is a black and white photo of somebody standing in a puddle with a box over their head. When I first saw this photo, it just made me think of the isolation and the loneliness that can come with leadership. I didn't really go into anything in the email that talked about how to break that, break that isolation down, but I just asked readers to come sit with that and think about their own feelings. Think about how you can take care of yourself. And break down some of that isolation. You see things and you say why, but I dream things that never were, and I say why not? That quotes from George Bernard Shaw in 1949 and the topic of Tuesday's email is vision. I thought this was a nice juxtaposition from Monday's email of a leader with a box over their head. I have to admit that I have a love hate relationship with vision. I used to believe very strongly and passionately that it was a leader's job to provide vision. And then I had a leader that came into my organization and completely trashed it. In my mind he trashed it and he had his own vision. And despite there being lots of people that had invested many years in the organization, he came in from the outside and just imposed his vision over everything. And that constituted a lot of destruction of programs and really damaging people. So I've become. Kind of very skeptical about the idea that leaders come in and impose a vision from outside. I think what we need to be focusing more on is the development of shared vision. And when we talk about visionary leadership, I think what we really should be talking about is the expectation that leaders can come in and create space for people to talk about their own dreams and goals and aspirations, and that leaders can facilitate a group of people sharing that and finding the commonality and developing a vision that is common to the participants. The people within the organization and that then the leader can really give voice to that and help keep people focused on that vision. Speaking of vision, Wednesday's email was about the difference between Mission, vision and goals, and I told the story of a trip that Pam and I took in the summer of 20. 21 So Pam is my wife, the other doctor Buskey. And in the summer of 2021 we jumped in an SUV and drove across country visiting all kinds of parks and things. And so I used that trip to talk about the mission, which the mission was to reconnect with family and friends and to have memorable experiences in nature. That's what we were going out to do. Vision is about the outcome resulting from enacting or fulfilling your mission. So our goal was to reconnect with family that were, excuse me, our mission was to reconnect with family and have memorable experiences. The vision was that we would drive home renewed in multiple ways, with a new set of memories and a great appreciation for our country, its people, and its beauty. Now, goals are the achievements that will help you fulfill your mission. So for our trip, some of our goals were backpack in the Badlands Backpacking Glacier Park, visit my friend Nat and Klamath Falls, spend time with my mom in San Francisco, and visit other family on the way home. Now, as it turned out, we did not meet all those goals. Yet we still achieved the mission and we still fulfilled our vision. So remember, the goals were places we would visit and things we would do. The mission was to reconnect with family and have memorable experiences, and the vision was that those experiences would leave us renewed and connected when we got home. So how could we achieve the mission and the vision if we didn't achieve the goals? Well, what happened was the summer of 2021 there was a massive heat wave across the northwest. And so some of the things that we wanted to do we just, we got cooked out of and so we had to change our plans. So we wound up not backpacking in the Badlands and we didn't backpack in Glacier Park. But that's OK, because one of the things that we sometimes do is we get so focused on goals that we forget why we have the goals, right? The goals are just kind of measurement steps on the way to achieving the mission and the vision. And there are a lot of times when the goals stop making sense for whatever reason. So when you're thinking about your organization and the mission and the vision and goals, yes, you want to attend to the goals, but don't get too focused on the goals. Always check and make sure that you're actually making progress on the mission. Because that's the most important thing. The title of Thursday's email was are you a force multiplier? And this email was inspired by something my good friend and colleague Doctor Robert Maddox sent me about the human touch and the human touch as being a force multiplier. The idea here is that connecting with people builds community, and that community creates strength, resilience and hope. So I offered three things that people could do. Each one of those would take less than three minutes and challenged readers to execute on one of these things to create connectivity and build community and thereby be a force multiplier because leaders are force multipliers. So the first thing was to me, call or email someone that you worked with this week and express gratitude. The second thing was to get together with another leader and identify a strategic behavior that you can implement next week. For example, engaging in five minute coaching and commit to being each other's accountability partners in executing that strategy. And the third one was a little bit selfish. I encouraged people to email me with an example of how something this week helped you to help someone else or a topic that you'd like me to write about in the future. And I do hope, if you are on the email list and you got this email on thursday, I hope you acted. I hope you took that opportunity to be intentional and to do something to reach out and create connectivity and build community with someone, whether that's me or somebody else. And if you're not on the email list and you're hearing this now on a Friday afternoon or maybe a Saturday. I encourage you to challenge yourself me call or email someone you worked with this week and just express gratitude. Work with another leader and think about a strategy that you could use next week to build community, build connection with people, and then hold each other accountable for doing it or. When you're done with this podcast, go ahead and email me and tell me something about this past week that you did to help someone else or send me a topic that you'd like me to write about. And finally, on Friday, we revisited the idea of m - V divided by E motivation equals value divided by effort. There was a graphic included in that you could print out and put up by your computer or on a wall somewhere. I just think M - V divided by E is so powerful. I won't elaborate on it hugely, but the idea is that increased value, decreased effort leads to increased motivation. And if we want people to be more motivated, what we can do is either increase value, decrease effort, or do both of those things. And I think where the power lies in this is that it gets us out of the judgment game. If we're trying to lead something or do something and people aren't following, people aren't doing what we want them to do. It's not about them being lazy or unmotivated or resistant. It's simply a mathematical formula. If people aren't doing what we want them to do, it's because that the given value or what they perceive as a value is not worth the perceived effort. And so we need to stop judging and start moving into problem solving mode and figure out how do we increase value? How do we decrease effort? So that's the week. I can't tell you that there's a single big takeaway. I think it's just really about being intentional and being mindful, checking in with yourself. Checking on that isolation, but then also checking in on other people and working to build community and connect to think about as a leader. How you're bringing people together and helping them articulate a vision and how you're expressing a shared vision and then got not getting too hung up on the goals. Yeah, their guideposts, but sometimes we need to go around them or go off in a different direction, direction. What's really important is the mission. Glacier National Park has some of the darkest skies in the country. Last weekend the park held its first star watching party since the pandemic. MTPR's Aaron Bolton reports.
The weekend of July 22, three fatalities occurred in Glacier National Park. Two fatalities were 67-year-old Brian Kennedy and 67-year-old Jack Beard, who died in a climbing accident on Dusty Star Mountain. Both were long time climbers, adventurers and members of the Glacier Mountaineering Society. The third death was a hiker visiting from Florida. These tragedies, along with a fourth hiking death earlier this year, show the risks of being in the back country, whether hiking, climbing or skiing, for any level of adventurer. From natural disasters, random accidents or simple mistakes, a day in the backcountry can take unexpected turns very quickly. This week on the podcast, Micah Drew brings two stories of outings in Glacier National Park that went sideways, but ended with all parties home safely. These are the stories you always want to be able to tell if things go wrong — everyone's okay in the end and they're able to share their experiences and hopefully something can be learned from them. Both guests, Whitefish's Colton Born and Kalispell's Pete Heyboer were in Glacier Park the same weekend the three tragedies occurred.Read more about all of this week's stories and get the latest breaking news at flatheadbeacon.com and sign up for our new daily newsletter at flatheadbeacon.com/newsletter.RELATED LINKSAugust 3 E-EditionThe Last MountainLatest on the Elmo FireThe introductory music in this this episode is “Thinking Music” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com), licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License, The episode also features two songs from Montana singer/songwriter Mike Murray's album We Are Like Warriors, "The Good Ol' Days You're In" and "Moment of Time," used with permission.Read more about all of this week's stories and get the latest breaking news at flatheadbeacon.com and sign up for our new daily newsletter at flatheadbeacon.com/newsletter. Hiking to Meadow Peak Lookout between Libby and Kalispell is a surefire way to enjoy incredible vistas and serious solitude. While the climb to the lookout follows a Forest Service road rather than a trail, the odds are good you'll have it all to yourself, along with big views. At the top, a historic tower built in 1951 looks out over the Cabinet Mountains, the peaks of Glacier Park, and the Canadian Rockies, and you'd be hard pressed to find better lunchtime views. Jordan Linn Graham, 22, admitted she got cold feet before committing murder eight days after her marriage last summer. Her husband, Cody Johnson, 25, fell to his death off a cliff July 7 in Glacier National Park.By Sasha Goldstein - New York Daily NewsThursday, March 27, 2014A nefarious 22-year-old newlywed who shoved her husband of eight days off a majestic Montana cliff was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday for her grisly crime.Jordan Linn Graham faced up to life in prison for second-degree murder after she admitted to pushing Cody Johnson, 25, off the side of a popular hiking trail July 7 in Glacier National Park.He fell 200 feet to his death. Johnson's body was found July 11 after Graham - who claimed she didn't know where he'd gone - said the area was on her husband's bucket list.U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy insisted the Kalispell woman - who repeatedly lied and changed her story about what had happened - never apologized for the murder and showed zero remorse, the Missoulian reported.“She was a normal person, at least on the surface,” the federal judge said in handing down the sentence, which includes no possibility of parole. “But how does a normal person kill her husband of eight days?”Days into her criminal trial in December, Graham and prosecutors reached a deal where the young woman would plead guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for a three decade sentence. But on Tuesday, Graham got cold feet and requested a new trial, claiming the agreement was “illusory” and a “hollow formality” after she read a memo that prosecutors called the killing premeditated and asked for a sentence of 50 years to life in prison.Molloy denied her request for a new trial and stuck to the terms of the plea, giving her the agreed-upon 30 years behind bars.An emotional Graham told the court she has “no answers” for “why I didn't make different decisions.”“It was a moment of complete shock and panic,” the tearful 22-year-old said, according to the Missoulian. “I have no other explanation.”Graham originally told investigators her new husband left unexpectedly with friends from out of state, and she even sent an email from a mythical “Tony” saying Johnson was never coming back. But investigators quickly saw through her tale and learned she'd actually had cold feet shortly after tying the knot.Graham eventually relented, telling the authorities she and Johnson had had a fight while walking The Loop trail and that she'd shoved him, harder than she had planned, to his death. Here's how and where you can find Homicide Worldwide Podcast. To help support the show, find us on Patreon: patreon.com HWW is now on Discord: https://discord.gg/F9cMyf7JFJTo our amazing listeners. The Flathead Valley area is getting a new semi-professional baseball team! One of the most common questions I receive from people moving to The Flathead Valley area is, “What is there to do?” There's plenty! Today I want to discuss what sorts of activities we like to do for fun around The Flathead Valley, including a special new attraction. There are excellent skiing mountains in the winter and wonderful fishing spots in the summer. We also are close to Glacier Park if you are interested in hiking and wildlife. Great rodeos come to town, and there are concerts all year round. The range of activities here is great, but there's a new thing coming to town that may pique your interest. We're getting a semi-professional baseball team called the Glacier Range Riders. Naturally, the mascot will be a mountain goat. The stadium is currently under construction and will be open this summer. It will have 2,500 seats, so there should be plenty of room for a fun crowd. "This team could be an anchor for our community." The first game will be on June 14, and there will be 48 home games. The Range Riders will be the fourth team in the state of Montana, the others being in Missoula, Great Falls, and Billings. They play in the Pioneer League, which is affiliated with Major League Baseball and consists of 10 teams total. The tickets become available in February, but you can reserve season tickets now. Just visit www.gorangeriders.com if you're interested. I believe this team could be an anchor for our community, so I'm excited about their arrival! If you have questions about today's topic or anything real estate-related, please call or email me. I am always willing to help.

Ask yourself this: if you found a 6 year's old lost teddy bear in Glacier Park, cold, wet and abandoned and you took that bear in and made it your own, only to find out whose bear it is months later, would you return it? Liz weighs in on our other news story about a Christmas tree farm whose unique marking "spin" went viral. And then we got to the real reason we had Liz on the show - to discuss John Cusack films. It is one of the busiest springs on record for Glacier National Park: Through May, nearly 300,000 people visited the park. Glacier National Park is implementing a ticketed entry system for visitors wanting to use Going-To-The-Sun-Road this season between West Glacier and St. Mary. Park officials had been considering the idea in the wake of record visitation in recent years. This summer officials anticipate one of the park’s busiest seasons ever. Officials say a ticketed entry system offers visitors increased certainty they’ll be able to enter the park, and could eliminate the need for closures at the park’s west entrance.

Braving horseflies the size of quarters and the searing afternoon sun, I ramble on a steep hillside like a bear, gorging for her long winter's nap. What could inspire such action? Huckleberries, of course. A recent trip to Glacier Park proved I wasn't alone in my obsession.
The brand new Sean Stranahan mystery is here! I have been a fan of Keith McCafferty's since his first book, The Royal Wulff Murders (each mystery in the series is named after a fly fishing tie), so it is a huge thrill for me to have him on the show. We had a great chat about Montana, six-toed cats, mountain lions, book research and more. If you haven't read Keith's Sean Stranahan books, you're in for a treat! The Bangtail Ghost is book eight in the series and is released on 18 August 2020. The books are all beautifully written, with rich, compelling characters, interesting settings and mysteries. In the interview, Keith and I mention his son Tom who is a painter and who inspired Sean Stranahan's work as an artist. You can see Tom's incredible paintings here on his website and also here at the Cole Gallery in Seattle. This week's mystery author Keith McCafferty is the Survival and Outdoor Skills editor of Field & Stream and the author of eight novels in the Sean Stranahan mystery series, published by Viking/Penguin Books. He is the recipient of the Will Rogers Gold Medallion Award and the Western Writers of America Spur Award for Best Novel, among many other awards. Two of his novels were chosen as Best Reads by Oprah Winfrey's "O" magazine. Keith is a two-time National Magazine Award finalist and the recipient of the Robert Traver Award for angling literature. For years he made a living with his flyrod, writing stories for Field & Stream. A wild bird rescue volunteer, Keith lives with his wife and family, and various feathered friends, in Montana. Keith McCafferty interview transcript Alexandra Amor: The previous book, A Death in Eden, was inspired by controversy about copper mining. Keith McCafferty: The Black Copper mine proposed for the summit for the SmithGroup. Yeah. Alexandra Amor: So what inspired this one, The Bangtail Ghost? Keith McCafferty: I think it's the power of nature and man's reaction when he realizes that he isn't the apex predator. Starting with my first book, I always tried to paint a smaller human scale story against a larger backdrop issue, whether it's wolf reintroduction, whether it's Ernest Hemingway, who casts a large shadow and who plays a big role in Coldhearted River. But I'm not wedded to that. I'd probably won more awards for Crazy Mountain Kiss than any of my books. And yet that's just a human story. It has no larger story. I've always been fascinated with cats all my life. And even to the point of traveling to India a few years ago to see tigers in an area where I'd wanted to go since I was a little boy. And so I wanted to put a big pussycat into one of my books. I've also had the good fortune or misfortune of running into seven mountain lions. And one of them, two of them actually stood me off for quite a while one night growling at me. And I could have read you the very first chapter of the book, which is literally what happened to me, except it happens to Sean Stranahan. So I've always felt that the big cats have sought me out. I've had very few run ins with grizzly bears, even though I spent a lot of time, it feels like, in bear country, but I seem to run into the big pussycats wherever I go. Alexandra Amor: Wow. That is lucky isn't it? Because they're quite secretive, aren't they? Keith McCafferty: They're the ghost cat. I was fortunate that the man who is really the most important researcher of mountain lions, Jim Williams, who studied mountain lions from Glacier Park all the way down through and Chile and Argentina reads my books. And so I was able to run, you know, quite a bit of stuff past him.

Directly southeast of Glacier National Park, you can find the Badger-Two Medicine area of the Helena-Lewis & Clark National Forest. In the early 1980’s the land was leased for energy development.Since 1984 the Glacier-Two Medicine Alliance has advocated for the cancellation of these leases, and they've been successful on all but one, which is still held by an energy development company (at the time of this transcript). Alongside the Blackfeet nation, nationwide and statewide conservation groups, The Glacier-Two Medicine Alliance has helped prevent any energy development of the land thus far.Peter Metcalf serves as the Executive Director for the Glacier-Two Medicine Alliance. He talks about trying to create cohesiveness among the various interest groups and conservation efforts, what it looks like to be the sole employee of such an important organization, and how his variety of work has prepared him for his current role. If you want maximum views for minimum effort, you can’t do much better than Stanton Lake. Hidden in the Great Bear Wilderness south of Glacier National Park, this stunning lake is surrounded by deep forests and towering peaks that are reflected in its glassy surface. The short hike is pleasantly shaded by larch, Douglas fir, and birch. When you reach the lake, enjoy a picnic or set up camp and spend the night. Best of all, you’ll likely have this hidden gem all to yourself, while the summer crowds flock to Glacier Park. Photo by Taylor Horne
In this week’s episode, Shevonne shares the stories of five women in different times and places who have murdered their husbands. This is called “Mariticide.” This is the killing of one’s spouse. In a 2007 research paper, Adkinrah says, “‘the female killer knows very well what the balance of power is when it comes to attacking her husband or lover. The sleeping situation is a propitious one.” It is an area that has not extensive study, but it is recurrent and continues to occur even til this day. ***Please visit the web site: www.femalekillers.comInstagram: www.instagram.com/femalekillerspodcastTwitter: www.twitter.com/femmekillersSources Oliver, B. Today Alyssia tells Nikki about the murder of Cody Johnson.
Isaiah was the greatest of the prophets and a superb master of language. If you enjoy beautiful, rolling cadences and marvelous literary passages, you will enjoy this book for that reason alone. Isaiah is the fullest revelation of Christ in the Old Testament -- so much so, that it is often called "the gospel according to Isaiah." To acquaint yourself with these magnificent, prophetic passages looking forward to Christ is to experience much of the richness and depth of Scripture. Also, the prophetic nature of the book of Isaiah is one of the great proofs that the Bible is the word of God, for Isaiah lived some 724 years before Christ. The many passages looking forward to the Messiah point so clearly to Christ and are fulfilled in him, and thereby constitute an unanswerable argument for the divine inspiration of the book. Any time we approach a new book, we always want to look for a key. I am afraid, however, that this is sometimes a rather weak approach. Sometimes these Bible books seem like locked houses, barred and shuttered, so that you can't get anything out of them unless you find the key. And some people feel that the only duly-licensed real estate agents are the Bible teachers, who alone have the keys to the Scripture's "real estate." But scriptural books are not like that. They are more like national parks. They are open to everyone to roam in, and are a delight to explore all by yourself. But each park has a characteristic peculiar to itself that distinguishes it from the others; and you appreciate a park better if you know what that characteristic is. I have learned to appreciate some of the distinct characteristics of the great national parks in the West. For instance, if you want to see nature's various moods, go to Yellowstone Park. There she pulls all the tricks out of her bag and throws everything together. If you want to see mountain grandeur and cool lakes, Glacier Park in Montana is the place to go. If you want to be awed and humbled and stirred, then go to the Grand Canyon. If you are looking for a quiet valley in which to rest and reflect, Yosemite fills the bill -- that is, any time other than midsummer, when some twenty thousand people are in the valley with you.

Ruben tells us how his parents shared their passion for hiking, fishing, camping and skiing and got him excited about the outdoors. We talk about how Quivers got started, how brands are taking Quivers and creating unique online experiences for a wide range of audiences and much more. Facebook Twitter Instagram The Outdoor Biz Podcast Support the show Please give us a rating and review HERE Show Notes First Exposure to the Outdoors It was really when in the late 80s when I moved to Colorado that I got introduced to the outdoors. My parents were into hiking and fishing, camping, skiing you name it. They were taking us on the weekends into the outdoors in western Colorado. So my earliest childhood memories were camping in the mountains of Colorado, everything from hiking during the day to sitting around the campfire at night and then evenings trying to fight off hypothermia. After that I moved to northwest Montana in the mid 90s. My parents bought property kind of parallel to Glacier Park, it was unbelievable. We still have property up there and it's a place that I just absolutely love to go back to and again. That allowed me not just to go on weekends but even in the evenings, afternoons after school I could go do a hike or go wakeboarding. So for me outdoors has always been a huge part of my life. Things we talked about Quivers Advice, tips I think the first part that advice is really not to be so focused on products that are directly in the outdoor industry right. When I was coming out of university I really wanted to do something with outdoors but you know I love software, it's what I'm good at and is what I'm interested in. I thought that those were polar opposites right. But in reality they became very complimentary to each other which was interesting. So I think it's one of those situations where you don't necessarily ignore what you're good at, or what you're interested in just because you want to stay in the outdoor industry for example. But look for opportunities where the two can actually work together. And that was that was really where Quivers came about, yeah we do work with a lot of other industries. We work in consumer electronics and Twelve Volt automotive and a variety of others but sporting goods is certainly our biggest industry at this point and it's where we started. And it allows me anyway to engage with a lot of brands in that industry which is a huge part of what I enjoy and like. Yeah absolutely. And actually the company I worked for right out of university or while I was in university actually was based out of Bozeman Montana. And that's another interesting trend is more and more tech companies are getting based out of more places that are not Silicon Valley or major cities. I had some great friends that worked there that would put in their 8 to 4 in the summertime and in the evening hours and they'd go I fly fishing. It's not just necessarily a career choice but now also a lifestyle choice in terms of staying in the outdoors and still being able to do what you like to do. I'm still playing catch up with the things that fell by the way side this summer - including friends and family and duties and work ... I'm even catching up on making a list for those things that were here for a moment and gone before I could act on them. Which is a much longer list than I'd hoped. Anyways around it - I got to two conferences this summer and did functionally well enough to make me feel like an actual scientist - GODDAMN! I also got to get back to see my folks and friends in Missoula, which was a very good treat indeed. I'd missed my friends Guy and Mike in my visit, which is why previous paragraph has something of a sad timbre. A higher note was also struck - above and beyond all the rest. I got to have an adventerous tour through Glacier Park with Kate - which was a novelty for us both as, somehow, neither of us had managed to get to that corner of the world just yet. There's other things too - I should write on the meditations of revisiting Seattle and pnodering the trajectory of one's life ... but those are words for other days - my time tonight is short because I'm due for a visitor soon.
