Taking a break is an opportunity to catch a breath, reassess, and tweak ... SO this episode is a rebroadcast as your hosts take a winter-into-spring hiatus. Join us for new episodes in June!    A desire to connect with another person is at the heart of every conversation. Too often our words land in an unintended way. Mismatches are not uncommon in conversations between parent and child. So what can we parents do to avoid these conversation mishaps?      Join hosts, adoption coaches, and parents, Susan David and Gayle Swift, as they discuss how to listen so your kids feel seen, heard, and loved. As always, the discussion is Adoption Attuned and child-centric.    A note from your hosts:   Deeper listening questions/comments referenced in this episode include:  I see this is hard for you ... Do you want me to … Simply listen or…. Offer suggestions or … Get involved and if so, what are your ideas about how to handle this? Offer empathy, so they see we "get" their pain, anger, frustration, and disappointments and then eventually, ask them what they are learning from this. How will it help them to do things differently moving forward? Will this be a temporary or permanent challenge? How does it require them to adjust their long-term goals? What skills/knowledge does this challenge reveal they need to address? Get clear about whose problem it is? How does their problem create situations that they need to face? How does this problem create a situation that we parents might need to address? How do we disentangle the factors so each of us is clear whose stuff is whose?

We are interested in each other, we want to understand each other's lives, we value each other's ideas - all this comes from talking with each other.  We do this now because talking with each other is our family culture - it is how we do family - or one aspect.  But when the kids were younger we had to work on it - we all had to learn how to talk with each other - and I learnt that talking about things - talking about the things on my heart - was a very intentional and relational way to be heart focused.  Today we are talking about talking to our kids - having conversations that touch your child's heart. >>>FULL SHOW NOTES:  Episode #25 Intentional Heart Conversations Touch what your Child Believes and Values Includes - Heart-focused Christmas Conversation prompts:  Visit the show notes and screenshot 5 questions that will help you focus on heart issues this Christmas. >>>Join HEART-BOOSTERS (free) here. To start, Roxy shares contemplations around how we address and respond to racism, while Sarah offers grounded self-regulation for overcoming implicit biases and facing racism. “The more self-regulated we are, the less we are at the mercy of our implicit biases, so the more capacity we have to name what's happening in our own bodies and be resonate with ourselves, the more we have some ground to stand on to begin to address the structural racism that is terrifyingly comprehensive in our North American world.” – Sarah Peyton Sarah Peyton & Francesca discuss the effects of white supremacy on neurobiology, on Ep. 41 of ReRooted History, Grief, & Nonviolent Communication (15:15) Prompted by Francesca to relay the importance of diving into the history of racism, Roxy shares how doing so is actually learning to move through the stages of grief. Through this lens, she explains how we can use mindful awareness within stages of grief to acknowledge our mourning without collapsing into it. From here the conversation flows into the subtle nuances of nonviolent communication. “Learning this history is learning to move through the stages of grief. There's an innocence we have as children where we think we're gonna be fully accepted and seen for exactly who we are at the capacities we bring, and that moment of realizing over and over again that that's not the case, we have to go through the anger, denial, all the stages, and whenever we don't do that, whenever we stop, we actually can get into this really frozen place.” – Roxy Manning, PhD

The intention for "Heart Conversations" is just that, with a play on the word "Heart" : speaking from the heart about the hard topics/conversations; areas that most people don't really want to speak about, either because it is too difficult, or is important and yet, seemingly too fluffy to discuss. So let's do it here, through this platform. This thread is dedicated to acknowledging and honouring women; one half of the human population here on earth. We want to speak and share about the highs and lows of being women, we want to hear from you too, about your experiences about being a woman. So please join in the conversation! In this fourth and final episode for this season, we leap into the next half of the year with a difficult conversation of the pains and struggles of being a woman. Don't get us wrong; we are not saying that men don't have pains and struggles. We are just saying, as women, we perhaps can share a bit more about these, from a woman's perspective. From physical pain, to mental and emotional struggles, let's be open and honest about it, and how it is a struggle for us, as we go about our daily lives. This is not a solutioning conversation. Meaning, we are not here to solve a problem; more sharing of perspectives, thoughts, experiences.

Most of women today are constantly trying to balance multiple roles; They have to be mothers, sisters, daughters, leaders and even providers in their workplace and families. The Del beh Del: Heart-to-Heart Conversations with the Iranian Diaspora podcast is hosted and presented by the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies at San Francisco State University. This unique podcast is aimed at telling stories, conversing with cultural trailblazers, and raising some of the issues that have been challenging for our global Iranian community to engage with in the past. Hosted by two students affiliated with the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies, Del Beh Del will be a unique opportunity to engage listeners with those who live outside the boundaries of Iran and make their homes, communities, and livelihoods in countries like the US, Canada, as well as on the continents of Europe, Australia, and Asia. Finding out at 13 years old I had a 3mm hole in my heart felt like the end of the world. Little did I know, it would actually end up propelling me into my purpose. Heart to Heart started out as an idea for a mentorship program, then turned into a radio show, eventually became a Facebook Live series for over a year, and even made a couple of appearances on Instagram. However, there came a point when I realized I was playing too small. These Heart to Heart Conversations could not be kept to just my social media followers. This intention of connection, community, and collaboration through conversation needed to be shared with the world! I'm so grateful for my friends and family members who helped me get out of my head and into my heart during this process. They were there for me during the ups and downs and held me accountable to launching this thing!!! I am thrilled to bring you Holly Elissa Bruno on today’s episode. She has a huge heart and has seven decades of wisdom to bring to you in times of change. She is an expert in legal issues as a “recovering attorney,” and has great advice on how to run a business with clear policies that protect you. We talk to Holly about persistence through challenges, the curved line of our paths, how knowing the law manages our expectations, trends and innovation within the industry, and being of support to the unique and authentic leaders making a difference in our future.   Key Takeaways: [8:13] Holly began in education and discovered that she would love to work with children while they are still open and forming their attitudes in early childhood. Along the way, she became a professor, attorney, and taught a course called “The Human Side of Management.” She had a great blessing of meeting and networking with early childhood leaders and felt inspired to continue on the path of changing lives. [13:37] Holly feels most passionate and inspired when working with leaders that work with children. Even though the work is so powerful, a lot of times we are seen as glorified babysitters, caregivers, or lucky to get paid to work with children. [18:41] Holly’s intention is to keep learning always and she has a fascination with life, travel and education. [21:49] One of the things she did to change her life immensely was to take her experience with law and travel and bring it into co-writing her book Managing Legal Risks in Early Childhood Programs. [29:07] Holly gives examples of when the law can be facilitative rather than restrictive, and how certain policies can help get an honest reference for a potential employee. [39:51] Children should get outdoors and have a free and fun environment. We don’t recommend eating dirt but there is something fun to making a mud pie or splashing in a puddle. [43:10] Holly defines herself as a recovering work addict. She is much less focused now on her accomplishments and to do list and more on being present. [45:57] It’s about the four L’s: living, loving, learning and laughing. Holly pulls it into one practice each day by asking “How much today was my life touched by love, and how much did I open my heart?” [52:16] If a child doesn’t feel safe the child can’t relax enough to learn. Until a child feels safe he/she can’t feel love and absorb any type of education. [56:03] Holly defines a rockstar as someone that is so true to themselves that they can use all of their unique and authentic self to make a difference.   Mentioned in This Episode: Kris Murray Child Care Marketing Solutions Child Care Success Academy Holly Elissa Bruno ChildCareExchange —  Articles are titled “Hold the Phone” / “Hold Harmless for Babysitting” Julie Bartkus   Quotes: “I saw that if I wanted to make a difference on earth, early childhood was the place to be.” “You change a child’s life — you change the world.” “We are a field of wisdom and a field of building relationships.” “When you are present with a child, there is something beautiful that comes about.”   More About Holly Elissa Bruno: Holly Elissa Bruno, MA, JD, is an award-winning, best-selling author, international keynote speaker, ground-breaking radio host, and seasoned team builder. She served as Assistant Attorney General for the state of Maine and Assistant Dean at the University of Maine School of Law.
