If this movie gets several more sequels, this street can maybe almost be as popular as Elm Street... That might be a big reach, but all I'm saying is that I love that these films are still kicking and screaming. Enjoy, folks.

What's up, sleepy heads? This week on the podcast, I'm joined by Jon Yoe as we dive into the nightmares of Springwood to compare A Nightmare on Elm Street from 1984 and its 2010 reimagining. In this episode, we explore how Wes Craven's original reshaped the slasher genre by blending supernatural terror with psychological depth, and introduced one of horror's most unforgettable villains—Freddy Krueger. We break down the surreal, dream-fueled horror of the original, Freddy's evolution into a charismatic icon, and how themes like teenage trauma, distrust in authority, and fear of sleep made it a genre-defining film. Then we shift to the 2010 remake, which aimed to bring a grittier, more grounded version of Freddy to modern audiences. We unpack its emphasis on repressed trauma, psychological realism, and the stark shift in Freddy's portrayal—from theatrical killer to cold predator. We also compare the similarities and key differences between the two films, before closing out with a look at the cultural legacy of Elm Street, Freddy's influence on horror history, and why the remake didn't quite strike the same chord.Whether you're team New Line Cinema or team Platinum Dunes, this episode slices into what makes A Nightmare on Elm Street a pillar of horror—and why Freddy Krueger continues to haunt our collective subconscious.Thank you, everyone, for your support. If our dreams aren't scary enough, Wes Craven decided to add the creepy Freddy Krueger Nursery Rhyme. And anyone who is familiar with the movie, especially the franchise, knows the infamous jump rope song sung by the children. 41 years later and the song still gives me goosebumps.I sat down with Adri-Anne and Coye, and we discussed how they got involved with the franchise and how they became the notorious “Jump Rope Girls” – despite how creepy the song is, it's still part of something that has grown on us since our childhood. Bonus Content: They sang the song for us in the interview… And sure as hell, it's still in my head. Definitely an ear worm that will probably remain until I am six feet under.Overall, a wonderful interview. If you would like to meet them at a convention near you, all you have to do is put in that request to the individuals who run/coordinate the conventions. One, Two, Freddy's Coming for You… but This Time, He's Coming Out Into Our World. Freddy's back, and this time he's slashing his way into something a little different. In this slicing episode Don, Jon, and Ken sink their own claws into A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, the sequel that took a sharp left turn down subtext lane. Is this movie an underappreciated horror classic, or just a confused mess with a sweaty gym coach and a pool party gone wrong? The guys break down Jesse's possession arc, Freddy's bizarre real-world rampage, and that now-infamous bedroom dance scene—because nothing says horror like aggressive hip thrusts in tiny shorts. From the not-so-subtle innuendos to the lackluster dream kills, the boys ask the hard questions: Why is Freddy breaking into reality? What's up with that exploding parrot? And why did nobody care that Grady threw his Grandma down the stair? With sharp humor, heated debates, and a whole lot of wink-wink analysis, this episode is a must-listen for horror lovers and Elm Street fanatics alike. So grab your pool floaties and lock your bedroom door—because Freddy's coming, and he's bringing revenge.

Before Freddy Krueger haunted dreams on Elm Street, a real-life nightmare plagued Hmong refugees—young men mysteriously dying in their sleep, a terrifying phenomenon that remains unexplained to this day.Darkness Syndicate members get the ad-free version. https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateInfo on the next LIVE SCREAM event. https://weirddarkness.com/LiveScreamInfo on the next WEIRDO WATCH PARTY event. https://weirddarkness.com/TVIN THIS EPISODE: Children dying in their sleep while having terrible nightmares. It's not just a movie plot from a Wes Craven film – it really happened, and inspired the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. (The Terrifying True Syndrome That Inspired A Nightmare on Elm Street) *** We're used to seeing someone on television or in movies die from a gunshot or stabbing, knowing they were just pretending – that the gun was using blanks, or the knife was using a retractable blade. But what we don't often hear are the times that those prop weapons end up killing someone for real. (Death By Movie Prop) *** How can a little girl disappear in a big crowd of people with no one seeing anything? Was it a case of stranger danger or did someone she know betray her trust? We'll look at the case of Beverly Rose Potts who went missing in 1951, never to be seen again. (Peril in the Park for Beverly Potts) *** Part medicine, part honey, part cannibalism… who or what was the mellified man? (The Mellified Man) *** They say that tragedy can change a person forever… and that couldn't be more true for one man who went from being considered lucky, to becoming deranged after a horrible accident, (The Hidden Wounds of Mr. Schultz) *** Famous last words. Humphrey Bogart said, “I should have never switched from Scotch to martinis.” Winston Churchill's last words were simply, “I'm bored with it all.” But sometimes what a person says on their deathbed can be shocking or outlandish – even if they aren't a celebrity. We'll look at a few unexpected deathbed moments.
