You may have noticed that Mental Health, sometimes referred to as “wellness” or wellbeing, has, both in terms of funding, and staffing, become job 1 for most schools, and you may even have heard that students “can't learn” until they've been seen, heard, and assessed psychologically. Earlier, I sat down to talk with Jake Wiskerchen, marriage and family therapist, national certified counselor, and founder of Nevada based Zephyr Wellness, to get an update on what's going on in counseling, especially in schools. I asked Jake because of his broad and deep experience in the field. He has given consultations, talks, seminars, continuing education classes, and staff trainings, to many agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals, including the Nevada Bar Association, Northern Nevada Law Enforcement Academy (POST), Nevada State Civil Attorneys Association, Reno + Sparks Chamber of Commerce, University of Nevada, Washoe County School District, Nevada School Counselors Association, Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, Lyon County School District, Pershing County School District, Sixth Judicial District Court, VanNess Group Homes, and CSA/Head Start, and he's the host of not one, but TWO podcasts: noggin notes and guns and mental health. In this show, you'll learn why mental health is front and center in education, and why that may be much too much of an otherwise good thing. Can we Eat Predators if we are what we eat?  Kay Brown (Four 4 Consent, Nightlife Safety Summit) and Caeli Higgins (Music Industry Watchdog) join Shift Orion to describe the origins of the Eat Predators collective and how the brand was co-opted as they were driven out… just before Shift discovered it on social media, joined the unregulated Eat Predators Book Club, and hauled his ass from SF to LA to help the mysteriously misrepresented "leadership" lock down a business strategy. Caeli and Kay detail their experience forming Eat Predators alongside other survivors and organizers like Nomi Abadi, Sochil Martin, and Alexa Nikolas.  They cover the first planning meetings, escalating miscommunication and misrepresentation accelerated by media attention from a nearly-off-brand protest at Nickelodeon, and challenges navigating interpersonal and professional conflicts as the group (and Alexa's wounded ego) grew faster than anyone (except people who've been crushed by it) could imagine. As the media and public began to exclusively center and sensationalize Alexa, her participation and story have warped. Shift describes his experience getting into the "Eat Predators book club" (then finding out it was never supposed to exist), having a short-lived but intense friendship with Alexa (and an even shorter-lived role working as her media and public relations manager), and being shocked and heartbroken discovering that Alexa had misled him about everything. Opening up about getting to know her remotely then planning an in-person visit, even staying at Alexa's house for 5 days, Shift recalls how quickly Alexa's endearing personality turned hostile after he became concerned about her capacity and ethics as she orchestrated the book club community and other people to shun him by making alarming and untrue claims. In my latest podcast, I'm exploring a really important issue. This is a topic that affects women no matter what their age, status, culture, religion or race. But it's an issue that is often misunderstood and that is the issue of domestic abuse. How would you know if a colleague, friend or family member was a victim? How would you know if you were a victim? Because sadly many women aren't aware that they're experiencing it until it reaches a crisis point. This is such an important topic for us to talk about because it's often cloaked in secrecy and shame. Shockingly 75% of people who endure domestic violence are targeted at work but only 5% of organisations have a policy on how to support someone who is a victim. Domestic abuse is not just a private matter but a public one. We all have a responsibility to put an end to it. The purpose of this episode is to raise awareness so you can understand the role you can play in spotting it and helping to safeguard others. Whilst this topic might not be one we want to listen to - we can't turn our back on it as we leave behind the women who might be at risk or currently facing domestic abuse. So I urge you to listen so we can all come together to end domestic abuse and be empowered with the knowledge of what we can do. Today, we continue our discussion with another professional in the field of Veterinary Social Work. Veterinary Social Work is a field that keeps on growing as more and more people recognize the important role that animals play in the healing process. Today, I am speaking with Dr. Bethanie Poe. Bethanie strives to bring animal-assisted interventions to victims of violence, abuse, and neglect. She started her Master's program at the University of Tennessee's College of Social Work in 2005. The college had two tracks at the time, Clinical, and Management and Community Practice. Bethanie entered the Master's program, thinking that she wanted to be a Clinical Social Worker who would eventually have a private practice doing therapy, particularly with survivors of abuse. During her first internship, however, she quickly discovered that that was not a good fit for her, and she did not enjoy it at all. So she switched from Clinical to the Management and Community Practice track.  In this episode, Bethanie shares some powerful stories about her work with the University of Tennessee's programs and animal-assisted interventions that help people in their healing journeys. Bethanie's story is a fine example of the idea that you will eventually end up right where you are supposed to be. Be sure to stay tuned today to find out what Bethanie has to tell us about the work she is doing to protect victims of abuse and ensure that the rights of animals are recognized, respected, and upheld. Show highlights: Bethanie explains how switching from the Clinical to the Management and Community Practice track for her second internship for her Master's program ended up being a perfect outcome for her. Bethanie explains how Dr. Elizabeth Strand assisted her and helped her discover that the University of Tennessee's Social Work Program was the ideal fit for her. Bethanie explains what The Link is and what it means. Bethanie looks at how people's attitudes towards caring for animals have been evolving. Looking at the idea of creating programs that will allow foster children to take their pets with them. Bethanie discusses the stigmas that are associated with difficult and abusive situations. The grant that the Animal Protection Association in St. Louis has for victims of domestic violence. The issue of housing. There are certain obstacles related to working with people who do not have vaccinated cats and dogs. Bethanie explains how people manage to stay in the field. Bethanie talks about what she does in her role as the Middle Tennessee Coordinator for UT's Human-Animal Bond in Tennessee ( H.A.B.I.T). The kind of temperament that dogs need to have, to be able to go into abuse facilities. Bethanie talks about the volunteers at H.A.B.I.T and the kind of orientation they get when they join. The type of interventions in which animals get used. The importance of involving kids in discussions regarding their animals. Bethanie talks about some things that would be helpful to her for the work she does with The Link. How Covid has affected Bethanie's work. Bio:  Dr. Bethanie A. Poe, LMSW is a graduate of the University of Tennessee's College of Social Work's Ph.D. program. She was a Fellow in UT's Veterinary Social Work program where she assisted in the development of the Veterinary Social Work Certificate Program for concurrent and post-graduate students. She began her work in family violence almost fifteen years ago, working first in a domestic violence shelter before moving on to work in child protection. She then continued her work in the field at the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence where she worked with batterers' intervention programs. Dr. Poe is currently the Middle Tennessee Coordinator for UT's Human-Animal Bond in Tennessee (H.A.B.I.T) program where she strives to bring animal-assisted interventions to victims of violence, abuse, and neglect. We work with survivors and their families to overcome histories of abuse to find positive paths forward. Meanwhile, we work with youth, schools, courts, legislators, and the community at large to advocate for a greater understanding of healthy relationships and how intimate partner violence can lead to any number of subsequent challenges. We are explicitly committed to naming the survivorship of people whose experiences have historically been ignored. STEPS was founded by the legendary Sister Mary Nerney in 1986 after she convened a gathering of women incarcerated at the Bedford Hills Women’s Correctional Facility who testified to their histories of battering and its relationship to their criminal charges. This historic event created a call to action to create what started as a two-person court advocacy project. In the decades since, STEPS has evolved into a holistic program of services for survivors of intimate partner and other forms of gender-based violence with wide-reaching focuses on healing, prevention, intervention, and policy advocacy. https://www.risingground.org/program/steps/   ABOUT Maisie Breit Maisie Breit is a Training and Curriculum Specialist for the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence (ENDGBV) where she develops and implements training and curricula on Intimate Partner Violence, Sexual Violence, Trauma-Responsive Practices, Systems of Oppression, and more. Pictured (clockwise from top left): AJ Debonis, Anindita Chaterjee Bhaumik, Robina Niaz, the Rev. Sally MacNichol As we continue to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this episode brings together three faith-based activists and service providers to discuss the disturbing rise of domestic violence during the pandemic, and the plight of victims who are at a higher risk due to social isolation and stay-at-home orders. For those who aren’t safer in their own home, the pandemic has created a worst-case scenario where options are limited. An average of 115 New Yorkers have visited the city government’s domestic violence resource website each day since the start of the pandemic — a staggering increase from the usual daily average of 45 — and similar trends have been noted around the globe. As our guests make clear, this isn’t a new problem. Like so many underlying systemic issues that have intensified in the last month – such as racial and class disparities in the pandemic’s death toll – the pre-existing threat of domestic violence has only been exacerbated by COVID-19, and has become a public health issue in its own right. This episode explores the risks victims and survivors face in these challenging times, as well as ways that faith leaders can support them. On a daily basis, family and criminal courts depend on mandated domestic violence services for resolving cases of intimate partner violence. Thousands of defendants and respondents in our city are required to complete these services in order to have visits with their children or get back in their homes. Yet there is little evidence of the effectiveness of existing services and there continues to be a reliance on outdated services such as Batterers Accountability programs. New York City policymakers have been examining this issue and have developed a Blueprint for Abusive Partner Intervention. A report published in 2018, “Seeding Generations: New Strategies Towards Services for People who Abuse,” took a comprehensive look at this issue and the need for a new model of services. The report acknowledges that services to families also need to consider the trauma that those who harm have been through. This panel on January 17, 2019 served as an opportunity for policymakers to have a dialogue with family court and criminal court practitioners about the current and future state of domestic violence services. Welcome: Cecile Noel, Commissioner, Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence Moderator: Purvi Shah, Consultant, Seeding Generations Speakers: Albery Abreu, Abusive Partner Intervention Specialist, Children’s Aid Society Tanya Apparicio, Deputy Chief, Domestic Violence Unit, NY County District Attorney’s Office Ana Bermudez, Commissioner, New York City Department of Probation Juliana Chereji, Family Defense Practice, Brooklyn Defenders Services Bea Hanson, Executive Director, Domestic Violence Task Force, NYC Office of the Mayor Quentin Walcott, Co-Executive Director of Connect Sponsoring Association Committee: Council on Children, Lauren Shapiro, Chair Co-Sponsoring Association Committees: Children & the Law Committee, Sara L. SHE’S THE CRAZY ONE: HOW ABUSERS DANCE WITH MENTAL HEALTH Mental health professionals are a valued and necessary part of our world and they can do a lot of good.  But what happens when the idea of mental health, mental illness, and even the professionals who help us, are used and exploited to make things worse for those victimized by domestic violence? Rachel Graber has worked in human services for seven years as a school counselor, an intern at Meskwaki Child and Victims Services, and a public policy intern at the Women’s Resource and Action Center. She leads the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence legislative affairs in Washington, DC. She sits on the National Task Force to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, a national public policy collaboration between violence against women organizations, organizes NCADV Congressional briefings and legislative events, lobbies Congress on issues related to gender based  violence, and helps mobilize efforts to influence national legislation aimed at protecting and providing safe alternatives for victims of domestic violence. And she knows that exploiting mental health resources and professionals is often a way abusers control, win, and further victimize others. Join us as we talk about how a perpetrator can use and abuse mental health resources, definitions, and perceptions.
