In episode 16 (episode 4 of Season 2), Joe Carlson and Daniel Foucachon read some epic poetry together, beginning with a BAD reading of epic poetry, followed by a tutorial covering four basic principles for reading epic poetry: First, allow the natural stresses of the words to dictate the flow of the sentence. Different words have different stress lengths, depending on the placement of the vowels and the number of consonants. For example the words “to” and “flinch” are both one syllable words, but you can tell one takes less time to say than the other. Furthermore, a short word like “to” naturally leads you into the next word (ending with a vowel as it does), whereas you want to land on “flinch” a little, taking just a moment before moving on. Read the following naturally, while paying attention to the space you give between the words: “to flinch means to make a quick movement in reaction to something.” Notice the lack of space following the three instances of “to”, and the space following the harder sounds of “flinch” “make” “quick” and “movement”. This is how the English language works, and you shouldn't fight it when reading, especially when reading poetry.Second, read according to the punctuation, not the line break. The line breaks because the number of syllables allotted that line have been used up, not because a breath is required. Pay attention to the natural breaks in the syntax: the commas, the semicolons, the periods. Also, like I mentioned above, pay attention to the flow of the words themselves, and let the natural stresses dictate your annunciation and your rests.Third, read the poem aloud and slowly. Taste the words on your tongue. Let their sounds fill your eustachian tubes, bringing the words directly to your ears, as well as traveling around your cheeks and hitting them from the outside. This process will encourage and cultivate your ability to enter into the story, imaginatively accepting the imagery of the poem as the landscape you are inhabiting.Lastly, for extra credit, you can listen for moments of alliteration (repetition of certain consonants), assonance (repetition of certain vowel sounds), parallelisms, chiasmi, and the skilled use of enjambment (the continuation of a sentence beyond the end of a line), among other poetic tools wielded by the master. But these are the technical aspects of the poetry, the museum lighting that carefully illumines the painting. Therefore, while they certainly offer fodder for fruitful discussion, do not let them distract you from the painting itself, the story that Milton is telling.

SERIES 2 EPISODE 173: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: I don't know much about the law but I do know the Trump Trial has confirmed one of the immutable truths of the field: Never hire an attorney with a rating of 3-1/2 stars. Susan Necheles somehow managed to lose to Stormy Daniels during the second day of cross-examination in Trump-On-Trial yesterday; lose so badly and obviously that Trump's team was forced to file for a desperation mistrial from the very thin ice of basically claiming Necklace forgot to object to something that Daniels said on TUESDAY. All of a sudden the Trump defense was claiming – and leaking to every news organization, by the way – that Daniels had dog-whistled a subtext of rape or assault when she gave details about Trump standing in front of her, and not using a condom, and a bodyguard being out in the hallway – and we should just ignore that when she said all that, THREE DAYS AGO, Trump's lawyer with the three-and-a-half stars rating Susan Necheles said… nothing. Not even the only thing you or I would remember to say if we woke up in some alternate universe where we were in that courtroom as Trump's lawyer: “OBJECTION.” And that might have been Necheles's best work. Ms. Necheles: “You have experience in making up fake stories about sex?” Ms. Daniels: “The sex is real. That's why it's not a B movie.” Ms. Necheles: “NOW you have a story about having sex with President Trump, right?” Ms. Daniels: “If that story was untrue, I would've written it to be a lot better.” Ooops! There goes another half a star. Ms. Necheles: “You had sex with a cameraman?” Ms. Daniels: “I started dating him and he became my husband.” A reminder: None of this needed to be heard by the jury. If Trump's defense had stipulated, yeah, they had sex, she wouldn't have been allowed to testify. Or they could have just asked her what she knew about Trump's involvement in the non-disclosure agreement and the payoffs and she could have said “nothing” and Ms. Necheles could have said “nothing further, your honor.” This is a case – a relatively boring case with excruciating details about how routine company checks got sent to the White House for Trump to sign even as president and he never ignored a single detail that cost him more than 99 cents – a relatively boring case about falsified business records and the attempt to interfere with an election and Trump's team turned it into wocka-wocka-wocka, and his credibility and their credibility against the credibility of a pornographic actress and guess what: the actress won. ALSO: Oh by the way, last month Trump assembled around 20 of the nation's top oil and fossil fuel executives and offered them a deal. He'd sell them the world to destroy as quickly as they wanted - repeal all regulations and make Doug Burgum Secretary of Energy or VP or whatever - if they'd simply give him a billion dollars with which to get elected. So when you worry that democracy is on the ballot in November, just remember, no, it's worse than that: human EXISTENCE is on the ballot. B-Block (23:10) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Mark Levin tries to get around calling Judge Juan Merchan "a pervert" because he was listening to Stormy Daniels' testimony. Failson Andrew Giuliani is "reporting" on the trial and puts me in an impossible position by blasting Lawrence O'Donnell. And Chuck Todd ISN'T gone after all. He has just written a masterpiece of nonsense: an Epic Poem of bothsidesism in which he concludes Biden and Trump both need to admit their mistakes. He spends one paragraph on Trump's mistakes and about a dozen on how Biden failed to bring the country together (while Trump was tearing it apart).  C-Block (34:00) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: No gentle reminiscences here. No prophetic tales of heroes who were actually schmoes. Thurber goes for the jugular vein of the famous Avantgarde artist Salvador Dali in "The Secret Life Of James Thurber."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Paradise Lost is an epic poem by the 17th-century English poet John Milton, published in 1667. In its most creative fashion, it supplemented the biblical story of the origin and the Fall of Man, and imaginatively explains how and why Adam and Eve are tempted by the fallen angel Satan and thereby their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. It is considered to be Milton's masterpiece, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest English poets of all time. The Devil card often points to our fatal flaw, the wound that is standing in our way, preventing us from getting the thing we really want. One especially delicious tool we can use to help deepen our knowledge of the Devil card is literature. Today we’re discussing the meaning of our favorite foe with Milton scholar Michael Ursell. We discuss the infamous book, "Paradise Lost," and what it teaches us about love and resistance. In the episode you’ll find out why the Devil figure really is scary, but not for the reasons you might think. Dante's Inferno! One of the most influential literary works ever written. Put to parchment in the early 14th century, Dante's opening third of the Divine Comedy presented a clear vision of Christian Hell, wherein nine descending circles, Dante, guided by the ancient Roman poet, Virgil, witnesses various types of sinners receiving poetically fitting forms of punishment. In today's Suck, we learn about the nature of epic poems, layout several examples of epic poems that came before Dante, and learn about who Dante the man was, before accompanying him, circle by circle, on his descent into the underworld where he will eventually meet Lucifer. We also summarize what Dante will encounter in the second and third portions of his Divine Comedy. People got to feel good and moral and activist for condemning me. Then that all got forgotten. I'm still recovering from it. It almost killed me. Maybe it is still killing me. Here's a start of a poem about it.

The Derelict lies a bit low for him but weighs in nonetheless, especially when the boys discuss The Derelict's Epic Poem reminiscent of Beowulf and called “Primal Lust: The Journey into Hell.” Jack and Sarah are real people portrayed in The Derelict‘a Epic Poem. They'll be in the studio soon to share some super scary and horrifically dark secrets. Finally, Outlaw reveals his real first name which is “Dana” or “Dane” and that he is “King of the Danes”, just like Beowulf. Outlaw firmly believes that is is the reincarnation of Beowulf. Google "Irish Epic Poem in 33 Cantos". You'll find the Kindle Edition of Paul O'Mahony's "Inferno". Written in November 2009, 33,000 words crushed into one story. It's a crime poem, a shocking thriller, an autobiography. You better be warned: it's a fierce unrelenting attack on certain members of the Roman Catholic bishops' circle, members of government - the ruling class. But it's full of lines as dense as these " you wouldn't want to spoil the thrill of unbeckoning insight ..." "Is the Mahābhārata where you find Ganesh strumming a lyre? Those are lazy whisperers ..." This episode is an introduction to the poem by the poet. It is not the poem, however lyrical it sounds. You never know - this might put you off buying the Kindle edition.

“Fortune Favors the Bold” is the translation of a Latin proverb, "Fortuna" refers to luck or its personification, a Roman goddess.  The Epic Poem and exquisite song, and movie, Bohemian Rhapsody, which just opened last Friday, is just that.  Bold, audacious.  And I LOVED it!  LOVE it, because I’ve seen it twice already…and I’ll see it again.  This movie brings to life the emergence of Queen into our consciousness.   Live Aide:  From Wikipedia:  Queen’s twenty one minute performance, which began at 6:41 PM, has been voted – by more than 60 artists, journalists and music industry executives – the greatest live performance in the history of rock.[18][19] Queen's lead singer Freddie Mercury at times led the crowd in unison refrains,[20] and his sustained note during the a cappella section came to be known as "The Note Heard Round the World".[19] The band's six song set opened with a shortened version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" and closed with "We Are the Champions".[2][21][22] Mercury and fellow band member Brian May later sang the first song of the three-part Wembley event finale, "Is This the World We Created…?"[22] Wanna see the whole 21 minutes?  Check out the Magick:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A22oy8dFjqc Thank you, Rami Malek, for your portrayal of Freddie Mercury.  Here are some quotes from Rami - "What he (Freddie) himself put down from his soul onto paper and then sang as loudly as he could in public...I looked at them almost as a diary,” said Malek. “He was pouring his heart out into these songs. They’re whimsical. They’re ethereal at times. They’re painful. The guy was a very complicated human being searching for love all his life, and you can hear it.” You can hear Freddie's Genius with each song...each lyric.  What a Superpower.  What is yours?   Hello, my name is Marie Ruzicka - International Transformational Speaker & Catalyst for Joy.  AND If you are inspired to Discover Your Genius & the Flow of Your Wealth there are 3 ways…you can start. The Mahābhārata is South Asia’s most important literary text. A long narrative of epic struggle between two sets of parallel cousins, it tells of the transformation of social, religious and cultural mores in ancient Indian society between 200BCE and 200CE. It was once known at all levels of society and has continued to be read, heard and performed up until the present day. Hear back from La Trobe University’s Greg Bailey for this MTalks lecture that speaks about the ancient yet enduringly significant Mahābhārata. Jump back in time to the beginning of the common era when it was first composed; Greg summarised the contents and principal characters, as well as described some of the most dramatic moments in the narrative.
