Welcome to the one hundred and sixty-fourth episode of the #ExpatChat podcast and our final episode for 2025. In this end of 2025 wrap up, Atlas Wealth Group Managing Directors Brett Evans and James Ridley reflect on the key events that shaped the year and what Australian expats should be aware of heading into 2026. Brett and James discuss the impact of ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Trump, and why 2026 may see markets shift from broad macroeconomic themes to a greater focus on company performance. They also explore Australia's productivity challenges, the role of technology in closing the gap, and expectations for a more stable global market environment. The episode addresses misinformation around proposed tax legislation, and looks ahead to the May 2026 Australian Federal Budget, due to potential policy changes flagged by the Prime Minister. Brett and James also share that 2026 will be a big year for Atlas Wealth Group, with several new initiatives planned and an expanded presence across more cities globally to better support Australian expats. The discussion concludes with news of the launch of The Expat's Handbook, the first book by Atlas Wealth Group's Founder and Managing Director, Brett Evans, along with a reminder of the firm's Christmas office closure. Tune in for a clear, practical end of 2025 wrap up to help Australian expats start 2026 informed and prepared. South Africans abroad who lost their citizenship after acquiring another nationality can now breathe a sigh of relief. Following a landmark Constitutional Court ruling, the Department of Home Affairs has launched an online portal to help restore citizenship rights. In an interview with BizNews, Mary Paccard, the DA's global project manager, says that despite some early technical glitches the system is working well. She notes, however, that serious challenges remain at South Africa's embassies and consular services overseas, with the most pressing complaints being unanswered phones, slow responses to queries, and the very limited hours available to collect passports and other identity documents.
“If I really spent $4,000 a month, I'd have a villa and a problem.”Having Markeiz back on Discover Vietnam felt like picking up a conversation we never really finished the first time. When he first joined me back in 2020, I was recording out of my bedroom, praying the iPhone wouldn't ruin the audio. This time, we were sitting in a full podcast studio — lights, cameras, a technician, the whole lot. It made me think about how much this show has grown, and how much life in Vietnam has shaped both of us.This episode wasn't about headlines or clickbait. It was about getting past the noise — especially the noise created after his CNBC video “Living on $4,000 a Month in Vietnam” went viral. That title got people talking, but most of the reactions didn't include the actual context. And nothing drives me madder than a story taken out of context.I wanted to let him tell the full story himself — the chaos that brought him to Vietnam, the visa confusion everyone goes through, the reality behind that $4,000 figure, and why life here works for him. What I loved most is that the conversation wasn't defensive. It was honest. It was grounded. It was two people who love living in Vietnam but also understand the complexities and privilege that come with that.Key Talking Points1. The Real Story Behind the “$4,000 in Vietnam” Headline2. Lately, I've been thinking a lot about those chapters in life where everything looks “fine” from the outside — yet something deep inside whispers that this isn't really your place anymore. Not because anything is dramatically wrong, but because you know you're meant for something different… something more aligned. In this episode of This Expat Life, I dive into a concept that came up inside The Co-Pilot and instantly struck a chord: the waiting room. It's that in-between phase where life feels like a 6/10 — functional, familiar, even comfortable — but not truly fulfilling. The kind of place you don't choose, but somehow drift into. I share how the waiting room has shown up in my own expat journey, how easy it is to stay there longer than you intend, and the subtle ways we end up waiting for clarity, timing, or external signs before we permit ourselves to move. If you've ever felt like you're hovering between chapters, knowing you want change but not knowing when or how to start, this episode will speak to you. It will help you see where you might be giving your power away — and what becomes possible once you decide you're done waiting. I'd love to hear if this resonates. Send me a DM on Instagram at @amandamaxime, or email me at info@amandamaximecoaching.com. And if you want to get OUT of the waiting room... Your next door to open is my signature program The Co-Pilot, starting again in early 2026. In this episode, I'm speaking with Bryan McInnis, who moved from the United States to Kampala, Uganda with his wife and two daughters.Every immigrant has felt the tension of the pull towards your people as you settle into the new country. The comfort of shared references, familiar jokes, conversations that don't require any literal or cultural translation.Bryan McInnis was no different. But he and his wife left the United States specifically to give their kids a more robust picture of the world. You can't do that if you only hang out in the expat bubble. And so 6+ months into life in Kampala, Bryan's learning about cultural differences that only show up if you dig in.Bryan and I chat about:What it's like to move the United States to UgandaThe trip that kicked off everythingThe Ugandan entrepreneurial impulse that defies the “Africa is slow” stereotypeWhat it means to raise third-culture childrenWhy he thinks his family is more intentional now than ever

I exhume this post every year to remind myself and others that giving thanks goes beyond turkey, Macy's parades, and football. Welcome to the one hundred sixty first episode of the #ExpatChat podcast. We explore the latest tax, investment, and financial issues affecting #AustralianExpats. In this episode, Atlas Wealth Group Managing Directors Brett Evans and James Ridley break down the tax implications and financial considerations for Australian rugby players joining the new R360 tournament. Brett and James dive into the buzz around R360 and clarify the common misconception that player salaries will be “tax-free.” They explain why Australian tax residency rules make this more complicated than it seems—especially for professional athletes on short-term contracts. The discussion covers how section 23AG exemptions might apply and what players would realistically need to do to qualify. The episode also explores Saudi funding behind the league, the involvement of high-profile players, and commercial opportunities around both R360 and the P&G NRL team. Brett and James stress the importance of independent tax advice before signing overseas contracts, given the risks of remaining an Australian tax resident or losing NRL eligibility. They conclude with practical guidance for athletes, expats, and advisors navigating cross-border tax rules, while also sharing a preview of the final episodes of the year. Packed with myth-busting insights and timely advice, this episode equips Australian expats and athletes with a clear understanding of the real tax implications of international sporting deals and the considerations to make before moving abroad.
