The more we grow and expand, the more we enter new dimensions that have room for the version of ourselves that we currently embrace. Likewise, this upcoming New Year gives us another chance to commit to the next phase of our True Stride. How can we be sure we stay aligned on the next part of our path? This episode talks about choosing a guiding word and intention. I got an email from a Strider about reflecting on the Word of the Year. This person was curious about what this year's conversation would bring since it's a tradition for Striders (and for me personally the past 13 years). I didn't give it much thought yet, but saw this as a great opportunity to start now, so thank you. I'm here to spend quality solo time with you for EP115's Wise Walk as we discover our True Stride. Each year we pick a word or phrase to act as a mantra, mirror, or intention for the year (instead of a New Year's Resolution). The word choice happens in a Four Step Process: 1. Ask: What is the intention you want to create? Example: What do I want to create or manifest? 2. Ask: How does the word feel when you try it on and does it encompass all the areas of your life? Example: How does the word apply to you personally, professionally, financially, spiritually, in relationships, etc.? 3. Act: Envision all the possible applications and how it makes you feel. Example: Envision how this word could influence your decisions, especially when at life's crossroads. 4. Act: Apply it and take action. Example: Apply it to your life before the New Year to play around with how the word feels in real time. On our Wise Walk, I talk about how your Word of the Year is your personal guiding star that will support you and help you get to where you want to go. Come with me as we reflect on these Wise Walk questions: What is a word or a phrase that will help you stay grounded in the experience and the feeling that you want to create? How are you going to use that word to motivate you or to check that you're in alignment? How can that word help you readjust if you get off course? www.kaiehnes.com Ep46 Frontier Pragmatism Hello and Welcome to the Way of the Emotional Warrior Podcast. My name is Kai Ehnes and today we will be answering the question of: Is it worth being a Frontier Pragmatist? Pragmatic…Probably a term you have heard of at some point. There is quite a bit of debate over what it ultimately means but I think one way to look at pragmatism is as being practical, in the here and now. One explanation is that words and thoughts are not in themselves an exact version of reality. That means that words and thoughts moreso are a tool to be used to get something done. Let's try an example. You do something the best that you can. Someone you respect tells you that you did a “good Job.” On one hand this could mean that there is a clear cut definition and standard of what a good job is. Of your performance matched or exceeded that then you actually did a “good job. Pragmatists would use the word for several purposes. Of course it would mean that your performance was acceptable. But it also probably means that the person who is evaluating your performance wants to support you and entice you to improve. So, the idea of “good job” means, you did well, and you can find some places to improve and there fore carries an emotional intention that serves expediency in the moment. I realize that this is wordy but let me transition to the Way of the Emotional Warrior. A Frontier Pragmatist is someone who sees the world as it is and not how they want it to be. Its about getting something done now. It gets forward moving action and energy flowing. The other side to this idea is living in the world of ideals. Don't misunderstand this subtle point here. There is great merit to idealism, there is beauty in the pure ideals of something absolute. The difficulty is that it can lead to stuck or stalled out energy. Example: How can you really know that you have found absolute truth? The search may never end. However, it doesn't help to give up. Idealism is a wonderful part of how you view the world. The Frontier Pragmatist thinks in the Now. The added term of Frontier to Pragmatist leads to the idea of self-reliance. The great U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes embraced this thinking in his view of Common Law decisions. Holmes meant it as the name for everything that arises out of the interaction of the human organism with the environment: beliefs, sentiments, customs, values, prejudices--what he called "the felt necessities of the time." If a law is so absolute that it does not serve the decency of the community then what good is it? Think of common sense. For the best of the community. One of the Emotional Warrior pillars is neuroscience and this case it not so much about the workings of the brain but moreso the prospects of a neuroscientifically-informed pragmatism and a pragmatically-informed neuroscience on issues ranging from the nature of mental life to the implications of neuroscience for education and ethics. How does this help us as Emotional Warriors? As we uplevel our emotional vibration we have to consider that we will need to reevaluate the ethics and education that are necessary for human interaction on those new levels. Think of this way, there is the letter of the law and then there is the spirit of the law. Frontier Pragmatists operate on behalf of the spirit of the community and the environment we all live in. It's a combination of both sides. Emotional Warriors become Cutting Edge Pragmatists. They use their ideals to set the direction of their life compass and then live their day to day seeing their world the way it actually is in order to get things done in the Now. To me this means that we have to think and live sustainably. Guiding principles include: balance, perspective and fairness. We work together to exist the best way we can with each other and within the laws of the world we live in. 251. Survivorship Bias's Fatal Flaw

There’s an important bias to avoid: Survivorship bias. Unfortunately, people who might otherwise do something with their lives hide behind survivorship bias. Just as important as knowing when survivorship bias matters is knowing when survivorship bias does not matter. Survivorship bias has a fatal flaw. Example: Abraham Wald avoided survivorship bias to bring back more survivors In WWII the US military was trying to improve their planes. Each time a plane came back from a mission, they made a record of the bullet holes. Since most bullet holes were on the wings and tails of the planes, the military concluded they needed to add more armor in the wings and tails. But statistician Abraham Wald said, No – that’s not where you want to add more armor. You want more armor around the engine. That seemed weird. Their map of bullet holes showed very little damage to the engine compartment.   What Wald noticed that the military hadn’t noticed is they were only seeing bullet holes on planes that returned from missions. The bullet holes they weren’t seeing were the bullet holes on planes that did not return. And the bullet holes on planes that did not return were the ones bringing the planes down. Abraham Wald was cleverly taking into account what would become known as survivorship bias. Example: How survivorship bias can be used by an investing con artist In his book, Fooled by Randomness, Nassim Taleb tells a story of a con artist. He’d send out 10,000 letters. Half the letters predicted the stock market would go up in the next month. Half the letters, down. The next month, the con artist would send not 10,000 letters, but only 5,000. The following month, 2,500. Then 1,250, and on and on. Why did he keep sending fewer and fewer letters? Because he only sent follow-up letters to those who had received correct predictions. After enough letters, he had 150 or so victims hanging on his every word, eager to have this mystery genius invest money for them. Of course once the con artist received their money, they never heard from him again. They had been “fooled by randomness.” They had been fooled by survivorship bias. Survivorship bias doesn’t account for ergodicity Both these stories are useful examples of survivorship bias. In the first case, Abraham Wald used an awareness of survivorship bias to avoid getting a false signal from the data. In the second example, the recipients of the letters didn’t realize they could be getting a false signal from the letters. Survivorship bias is an important phenomenon to understand, but survivorship bias has a fatal flaw: Survivorship bias doesn’t account for ergodicity. What is ergodicity? What is ergodicity? Imagine you enter a dimly-lit bar just as it opens. A table of patrons across the room light up cigarettes. You can see the cascading trails of smoke rising. When they’re done with their cigarettes, they don’t smoke anymore the rest of the night. When you get home, you realize your clothes smell like smoke. How could this be? You were nowhere near the trails of smoke. Well, after the trails of smoke rose from the cigarettes, they dissipated around the room, until a faint haze of smoke filled the entire room. Randomness eventually touches everything That’s ergodicity. The smoke was rising from the cigarettes in a random pattern. But when a random pattern continues for long enough, that random pattern eventually fills the entire space it could have filled. The smoke spread randomly, until it filled the whole room. Ergodicity is why it’s not only 1% of Americans who are in the top 1% of income. As time passes, people enter and leave the top 1% of income. In a lifetime, 10% of Americans spend a year in the top 1%. More than half will spend a year in the top 10%. Ergodicity is why – even though life expectancy is about 76 – a 76-year-old only has a 4% chance of dying. The small risks of dying each year of life accumulate over time. Not every game is do-or-die Next time some entrepreneur or creative gives advice, or is profiled in an article, look at the comments or responses. You’ll probably see something like this: Don’t forget about survivorship bias! You didn’t hear from the thousands of others who followed that same advice, but didn’t succeed! Sometimes this is useful. More often than not, this is as damaging as survivorship bias itself. Example: Survivorship bias in Russian Roulette Imagine Russian Roulette was a spectator sport (thank God it’s not, but imagine). Chances are, there would be some “Michael Jordan” of Russian Roulette. Through mere chance, this person has survived hundreds of Russian Roulette matches. It just so happens that of the thousands of times this “champion” has spun the cylinder on the revolver, pointed the gun at their temple, and pulled the trigger, the chamber hasn’t had a bullet in it once. If there were millions of Russian Roulette players in the world – playing college Russian Roulette and little league Russian Roulette, hoping to make it to the Russian Roulette big leagues – a person like this would probably exist. Just like there is today in entrepreneurship and creativity, there would be an entire cottage industry of journalists and courses and Russian Roulette podcasts, all touting the advice from this Russian Roulette champion. How to spin the chamber, what thoughts to think while pulling the trigger, how much pressure to use, what gear like like gloves and jerseys to wear, and exercise programs for strength and conditioning. That would be survivorship bias at its finest – or worst. It’s all random. This “champion” has no skill. All their advice is useless. The Queen’s Gambit was not a “survivor” – then it was In 1983, Walter Tevis published a novel. He soon after optioned the screenplay rights to Jesse Kornbluth. Then Tevis died, and the project was cancelled. Nine years later, in 1992, Kornbluth could no longer afford to keep the option. Allan Scott bought the screen rights. Fifteen years later, in 2007, plans were underway to make a feature film out of this novel. Then the director died. (That director, Heath Ledger.) Finally, in 2020, the story from this novel was released as a Netflix series. At least 60 million people watched it. It’s Netflix’s most popular limited series ever. That series: The Queen’s Gambit. For the first time, the novel, The Queen’s Gambit, became a New York Times bestseller. This overnight success was almost 40 years in the making. For 37 years, The Queen’s Gambit was one of the “thousands of others who never made it.” In 2011, Kornbluth – who had the screenplay option before Scott had rights – said the rights had been bought by “people who will never get the film made.” The Queen’s Gambit was not a “survivor.” In fact, it went out of print. Not to mention at least two people literally did not survive to see it on the screen. Creative work is not Russian Roulette When you play Russian Roulette and lose, you are out of the game forever. Fortunately, as creatives, we are not playing Russian Roulette. If you build a company that fails, you can try again. If you write a blog post that falls flat, you can try hundreds or thousands more times. Creative work happens in Extremistan When someone says “Don’t forget survivorship bias,” what they’re really saying is, “Show me the exact steps to follow that guarantee success.” In creative work, there are no exact steps that guarantee success. Those only exist in Mediocristan. Even The Queen’s Gambit, which was wildly successful, wasn’t guaranteed success. It could have just as easily stayed out of print. Creative work happens not in Mediocristan, but Extremistan. No failure will come from pure lack of skill. No success will come from pure good luck. Creatives are like poker champions I have a friend who is a professional poker player. He knows if he plays poker online eight hours a day, he’ll average 100 dollars an hour. But he also knows for long stretches of time he’ll be losing money. It will look as if his career is over. On the contrary, he’ll also sometimes be flush with cash. It will look like he’s making way more than 100 dollars an hour. His career only works if he has one critical thing: “bankroll.” He needs a certain amount of money – a certain amount of padding – to help him weather losing streaks. If he goes bust, he’s out of the game entirely – he’s lost Russian Roulette. He has tremendous skill. That’s how he can survive as a professional poker player. But there’s no fighting randomness. His bankroll allows him to let randomness run its course long enough for ergodicity to even things out. The creative career is riding randomness Your results in creative work are not a direct reflection of your skill. Even if you’re “So good they can’t ignore you,” you could be toiling in obscurity for a while as you wait for your big break. If you aren’t cut out for that, fine. But admit it to yourself and don’t use survivorship bias as your scapegoat. Stay in the game long enough to survive But if you’re willing to try something that, as Seth Godin says, “might not work,” go ahead and try that advice. Maybe it will improve your odds a little. What’s important is you stay in the game long enough to let ergodicity give you more shots at a win. That could be literally having the bankroll to stay in the game. That could be making sure you make small enough bets – with high enough potential upside – that you don’t go bust, but have a chance to hit the jackpot. This Podcast Is Episode Number 400, And It's About A Guide On How To Provide Year-round Value To Your Contracting Clients Markets are dynamic and continually evolving, so no business can afford to stand still. Many construction business owners have learned that in the last few months as COVID-19 spread around the world. No matter how excellent your products or services, they have a finite lifespan, so they must be developed, improved, or replaced if you're continuing to grow your business. New products, services, and ways of providing more value to your clients and prospects are the hallmarks of a go-ahead business. Improvements and extensions You can lengthen your services' market life through a process of continuous improvement in response to customer feedback. You can also work on extending your range through complementary products or services. However, there's a limit to the extent you can keep on refining, and in many cases – in the end, you'll need something new. Besides, if you are a trade contractor specializing in a specific skill and service, how can you translate your expertise to show that you have your prospective clients' best interest year-round? Steps to take Don't make the mistake of sitting around, waiting for events to overtake you. It's essential to take a proactive approach to identify possible market threats as well as opportunities by: Ensuring you're getting regular market feedback from your customers and others – customers are often the first to tell you that your products are no longer meeting their requirements. Setting up a new service committee of key staff members – meet regularly to review market feedback and gather ideas on improving existing services and potential new services. Attending trade shows (or online events) – can be a great way to open your mind to what's happening in your industry. Seeing what similar businesses are doing overseas, spotting new trends and products, and making new business contacts are great ways of coming up with new products or services. Keeping up with networking – attending conferences, seminars, and industry events (hopefully in-person this year). They're your best sources for finding out if any government grants or initiatives are coming up. Make the most of the Internet Online research is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most effective ways to keep your ear to the ground about what's happening in your industry, and it's a great source of inspiration when it comes to new ideas. If you don't have the time yourself, appoint an employee to monitor things like: Social media platforms and channels – signing up to relevant Twitter feeds, Facebook pages, and LinkedIn are all excellent ways to stay up-to-date with what's happening in your industry. Subscribe to RSS feeds – again, it's a useful tool that helps you keep your ear to the ground about what's happening. University and other academic research – papers are often published on the outcomes of the latest research and development, and in many cases, they're free to read. While you learn and grow, you can now share new information and develop different strategies to serve your clients and prospects. Here are some content ideas you can share - online (website, blog post, podcast, and email) or offline (marketing materials like brochures, flyers, and newsletter): Client Interviews Testimonials are one-sided and usually a short text of how you performed. Take it up a notch and make it a Q and A post: Why did they hire you? What processes have you been through together to come up with a successful plan? This would deliver an impactful message to your audience. How-to Guides Imagine a mother's anxiety before a significant renovation; add her full-time job and her family's needs to that. If you can address most of her concerns before wreaking havoc inside their home, that's value right there. Example: How to Prepare for a Kitchen Remodeling Project Checklist Write about safety and procedures, your daily inspection, or task reminders on what to do. Guide By creating a handbook post, you tell prospective clients the qualifications of an expert (insert your particular trade) contractor. This is a subtle way of showing your mastery and skills without being "salesy." Example: What to Look Out for Before Hiring a Capet Installer Biggest mistakes/lessons Nobody wants to talk about their failures, but your takeaways from these failures lead you to step up your game plan. Example: My Painting Job That Went Horribly Wrong Tips and Tricks Helpful and bite-sized information. Whether you're talking about using a manual tool, choosing the right paint color, etc. Tutorial with Video Demonstration They can probably search this on YouTube, but it doesn't mean you cannot make one. This is part of positioning yourself as their "Go-to person." Telling your clients you know how to use your tools is one thing; showing them how is another. FAQ What are the most common questions you've been asked? Is it about how you deliver your services? What time of day can they expect you to show up? Start taking notes of what your clients are asking or telling you. These little details can make up for an informative blog post. Share a list of online resources related to your services Example: 10 Inspiring Minimalist Bedrooms Event Recap Have you participated in a trade show? Attended an industry conference or a marketing event? It shows your keeping up with the industry standards and best practices. Always remember - for every marketing material that you produce, think about your purpose and how it will benefit your target audience regardless if they hire your services or not. Final thoughts Providing value to your clients tells that you are serious about your construction business; providing it year-round builds your relationship with them, establishes your credibility in your local neighborhood, and makes you the "go-to" person in your particular industry.    As we welcome the new year, I'll leave you with a simple Randalism that you can put into practice every day: Be. On this episode of The Wednesday Call podcast, Andy Albright comes to you live from his home in Treasure Island, Fla. to talk about why people should tell it like it is with people. When you tell it like it is ... Your intention is the biggest difference. Being direct with news no one wants to hear but needs to hear, is accepted by most if they know you genuinely care about them. "If you want to tell someone like it is, it's not complicated. Just tell the people you love that you love them and tell them the truth whenever possible." -- Jeff Bright Moral: The promotion of a person's welfare sometimes requires tough love. But tough love requires credibility. 3 Steps to Telling it Like it is: It's called feedback and there are specific criteria which must be followed if you want the "telling" to be accepted (message heard) and actionable (expectations set). Here is the Criteria: 1. Make it Clear 2. Make it Clean 3. Make it Calm How do we make it clear? "The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." -- George Bernard Shaw Moral: The biggest cause of miscommunication is misconception (a mistaken belief due to a preconceived notion) and misperception (an incorrect awareness due to a lacking of facts). Straightforwardness is a trait I've always admired in others. Being direct is the prerequisite for achieving clarity in any conversation. Direct "tellers" take less time and use fewer words to get the point. So keep your words short and sweet. Avoid trying to over explain your reason for saying NO or appearing overly apologetic for giving constructive feedback. But being Clear does not need to sound blunt. For example, not saying: "You got it yet?" 1. Make it Clear Continued: We need to be clear with our conversations in order to avoid vagueness. To accomplish this objective, you must learn to convey: clarity, conciseness and precision, all at the same time. Clarity (make sense, do not be fuzzy). Making sense helps frame the dream or goal. Example: Produce "said" premium a month. Conciseness (Be brief, do not take too long). Being brief helps remember the call to action. Example: Do the Do or Do your job. Precision (Be exact, do not approximate). Being exact helps honor the expectation. Example: Book "said" appointments a week. How Do We Make it Clean? "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you mad." -- Aldous Huxley Moral: Shaking off a little mad but knowing the truth, is much better than shaking off a lot of happy after you have found out that you have been lied to. 2. Make it Clean: When I reflect on the best relationships I have or had, personal and professional, the ones I value most are the real ones, the candid ones. Because, if you have feedback, I want to hear it. But, rarely do we get that feedback -- because we are afraid to give it. We fear sounding crass and disrespectful. And we were taught that if we didn't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. But Candor does not need to sound criticizing. For example, not saying: "You big dummy, you!" Make it Clean Continued: When you are the person who tells it like it is, the right way, people will respect you for your honesty. Here are some tips to becoming clean with your delivery: Decide ahead of time what outcome you are aiming for with the conversation. Be upfront with your objectives. This transparency will defuse much of the emotion and defensiveness. Choose a neutral phrasing about the situation by saying, "I've observed this...," rather than an emotional, exaggerated and personal reaction like, "You always do this..." Limit the number of times you say "you" and replace it with "I." 3. Make it Calm Quote: "You can't calm the storm... so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself. The storm will pass." -- Timber Hawkeye Moral: "Don't sweat it and don't stir it." -- Andy Albright 3. Make it Calm: Remaining calm during a difficult conversation is only achieved by not being baited into a reaction which derails a focused outcome. This requires the "teller" to refrain from reacting to the following assumptions (but instead, implementing the positive opposite): Absolutism vs. Perspective (introduce empathy to kill the need to be right about everything). Excuse vs. Contribution (introduce accountability to kill the need to find a reason why not). Blame vs. Obligation (introduce promise to kill the need to decommit to an expectation). 3. Make it Calm Continued: Listen to another's perspective, for example, on why they have not taken action. Introduce the following calming techniques: Acknowledge the feelings (to recognize emotion) Example: Tell me about your past experiences and intentions. Ask questions (to understand viewpoint) Example: How do you see the current situation? Paraphrase the responses (to establish accuracy) Example: So you are saying... (repeating back their own words)? On today’s episode, we are talking about the secrets to having more thankful kids.  Hi Momma’s, So far today I’ve helped my daughter with homework, gotten the dog’s nails trimmed and visited with a friend who is expecting a baby. And now, I’m excited to spend some time with all you beautiful mommas.  I’m drinking my pumpkin spice protein shake because I’m on a detox from Arbonne. A friend of mine has been with Arbonne for years, and I knew that when I finally finished the United States of Pie, where my daughter and I made 50 pies (one from every state in the nation). I knew I would need to cleanse or detox or something like that, so that’s what I’m doing now. I’m also dealing with some challenges with my eye right now because I have an autoimmune disease that flares up occasionally and it’s decided to do that now. I found it funny that today of all days I’m recording this episode on the secrets to thankful kids.  Have you ever felt like the world is spinning and you just want to jump off for a moment to catch your breath but that moment doesn’t seem to come? When the order came, I told her in front of the waitress, "Say, thank you."  My daughter complied and said, "Thank you," as she received her food.  This seemed to surprise the woman who served us, and she said, "How did you do that?"  I was a bit confused because I thought she saw me guide my daughter, but I also realized that not everyone knows to guide their kids this way and not everyone had been guided by a caring adult in their life.  Let me tell you, mommas, this is something you can do. You can do it with your toddler, your Kinderkid, your Tween, and even your teen.  Oxford did a recent study that showed, it’s never too late to give parenting advice. You’d be surprised at how much our kids listen and notice.    Here are the Secrets: 1. Be an Example How well do you appreciate the people around you?  Your kids are noticing and taking mental notes.  We model thankfulness when we say... - thank you to the cashier - thank you to the waiter/waitress - thank you on the phone - thank you to your spouse and/or to your children - thank you in prayer   2. Teach Them  For many of us, thankfulness was taught to us in the Bible. We can direct our kids to these verses by reading to them, posting them in the house, and challenging them to memorize them.  Thankful Bible Verses Ps 75:1 “We thank you O God! We give thanks because you are near.  People everywhere tell of your wonderful deeds.”   1 Chron. 16:34 “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!His faithful love endures forever.”   Phil 1:3 “Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.”   Ephesians 5:20 “And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”   3. Practice Gratitude (even when it doesn’t feel comfortable) Consider the tough moments in life. What can you still be thankful for? Suppose your car broke down, or you have bills up the kazoo, how can you still be thankful? My car door is currently slightly crumpled because of an accident that occurred while I was training my daughter on how to drive. It would be easy to let that overcome me, but I know I can be grateful that she learned a valuable lesson at a very slow speed and everyone came out alright. When I went to Toastmasters, I headed up a mentoring program for young speakers to gain guidance from advanced speakers.  In their training for mentees, it actually said to remind them to be thankful. This seems obvious, but it can often be overlooked.   4. Practice at Home  Actors rehearse so that the show goes well. Athletes work out, so the muscles know what to do when they are needed.  This momming thing isn’t an instant satisfaction type of gig. It’s a long haul, I’m with you through thick and thin kind of thing. We will be repeating ourselves often. The stuff we repeat the most will be the things our kids learn best.  We need to have them practice things like saying, "Thank you," and "Please," at home so that they will do it when they are out and about.  We have to spell it out.  You can let them practice it at home in family prayers. Around Thanksgiving,  you can challenge them to write what they are thankful for on post-its or note cards. You can get a bunch of ideas on Pinterest. The month of November is a great way to develop a habit by doing it for 30 days. It takes at least 30 days to form a habit…what if we start practicing thankfulness now and do it past Thanksgiving so that we show our kids we can do it all year.  You can teach them to send thank you letters, thank you emails, thank you texts, or even thank you Instagrams. They will resist, and they will push back because they are testing to see how important this really is to you and in life. If you decide it’s a value to you, they will begin to consider it as a value for them.    Research on the Value of Thankfulness   Grateful people      - open the door to more friendships     - have better mental and physical health     - are more empathetic     - are less aggressive     - sleep better     - have better self-esteem   You can read the article here.    Don’t quit on them and don’t quit on you, believe in the possibilities thankfulness will give and keep trying. The couple got on the N train and asked in their best English if the train was going to Scent Pearl. I asked them if they meant “Central Park” and if so, yes, it was going there and they settled in. They were from Brazil and delighted that I could understand their English sometimes and occasionally bits of their Portuguese. We had a companionable ride, misunderstanding one another at every turn. (Example: “How long are you here?” “We’ve been married 25 years.”) They told me I was very nice and friendly (I think this is what they were saying) and that they were happy to meet me. I told them I was also happy to meet them. They told me their names and I told them mine. I was pretty pleased to have made a nice connection with some strangers from far away.
