Fetanyl crisis; water reservoir; and more

“I lost part of my soul when Laird died.” On July 1, 2023, Gwyn received a call from her ex-husband that their son Laird had died. Laird died of a fentanyl overdose – from just half a pill. The devastation that followed Laird's death was devastating and extreme, not just for his family, his friends, and his girlfriend, but also for the entire community.  Now, nearly a year later, while Laird's siblings and parents are still struggling to cope with his loss, and his closest friends battle daily to merely survive after his death - Laird's mother, Gwyn, has become an activist and advocate - who has dedicated her life to combating the fentanyl epidemic.   In the days after Laird's death, Gwyn began the first of many interviews with local, national, and international TV, newspaper, and online publications. Interviews and op-eds focused on the devastating loss of her son, education about fentanyl use, and how deeply fentanyl had become entrenched in the community, especially in the school where her son went. About ten days after Laird's death, a suspect was arrested on a ‘death by distribution' warrant. The suspect was initially given a $100,000 bond; however, within hours, the bond was dropped to $50,000, and the suspect made the $5,000 bail in less than 24 hours from his arrest. Unfortunately, despite having photographic evidence and cell phone records corroborating the drug buy, the ADA declined to prosecute. Due to this legal sucker punch, Gwyn began driving change on two fronts: #JusticeForLaird: a grassroots campaign, in partnership with other Fentanyl focused nonprofits, driving legislative change at the local and state-level. #LiveForLaird: educating teens and their parents about fentanyl, how drugs have become exponentially stronger over the past 30 years, and how to ask for help. Still working through crippling grief daily and dreading the first anniversary coming up, Gwyn is determined to make a difference - and she is. She is truly a 1 Girl Revolution! In order to give prosecutors an extra tool to use in this crisis, the Indiana legislature passed a law making dealing resulting in death a level 1 felony. To be blunt, that means that if you sell someone fetanyl- or another drug- and that substance causes that person's death then you can face up to a 40 year prison term. .But what does this mean in practice? How are prosecutors using this law? What sort of cases are they seeing ?To find out we went to talk to Muncie to speak with Zach Craig. Zach is the Chief Deputy Prosecutor of Delaware County and currently leads the state of Indiana in getting convictions under this statute. Turns out that Holder is eligbile for the Elderly Parole program. The individual is eligible for a parole hearing under the Elderly Parole Program because they are not condemned or sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Depending on the individual's current sentence, their first parole hearing will be scheduled once they have either 1) been incarcerated at least 20 continuous years and at least reached the age of 50, or 2) been incarcerated at least 25 continuous years and at least reached the age of 60. Doesn't mean he will actually be released in 2039. But if he has good behavior, meets alls the requirements, there is a good change he will be released much sooner than expected. * BTB Savage shooter has been identified as Montrel Burley, 40. He was recently arrested just outside San Antonio, where BTB Savage and his girl shot and killed a would be thief, Omar Richardson. The police cleared BTB in that shooting ruling it a self defense, but after he went on VLAD TV, providing details of the shooting and posting photos from the scene of the killing, within hours, he was shot and killed in Houston. Burley, currently being held on $1 million bail, has been linked to the deceased Richardon. * Fetanyl dealer, 25-year-old Joaun Wright was caught with stash of 40 grams of fentanyl in Pringles container. He is also charged with multiplt gun charges. *Grandmother and Police Union executive, Segovia has been charged with dealing fentanyl including 61 shipments of the drug from foreign countries. * XXX tentacion's 3 killers all received LIFE sentences. As the numbers start to come in about the past year and the overdose rates there are a lot of alarming trends that are visible. Namely, the exploding rate of overdoses within the adolescent community. With Fentanyl becoming more widely available and more potent, the numbers are only going to rise. So, will the government continue to fight the war on drugs the same way it has for decades?
