The Henrico County Recreation and Parks department is changing the way it registers people for fitness classes. Starting this fall, instead of taking reservations for classes, the county is introducing a group exercise access pass that will allow access on a first-come, first-served basis. The new pass will be used to scan in for people attending fitness and wellness classes at the Belmont, Deep Run, Dorey and Eastern Henrico Recreation Centers. Discussions continue with two local councils after a popular Petersfield fitness scheme was threatened with eviction. Mark Allen runs Body Fitness Camp at Love Lane. He says he was granted permission from Petersfield Town Council four years ago but that the council now wants him to apply for a "change of use" or stop. Former councillor Paul Milner has been trying to support Mark and get to the bottom of the situation. We also hear from Sue Powney who says Mark's classes have improved her wellbeing, and Steven Field of Petersfield Town Council who explains there remains hope for the classes. Mallory is the owner of Excelerate Athletics, an online health and fitness coaching company that has helped over 600 people ditch diet culture and learn the truth about nutrition and exercise. She has spent time in several different roles as a fitness professional, including in-person personal training, online coaching, and group fitness coaching. After training thousands of individuals over the years, Mallory has seen what works for the masses, what doesn't, and what current narratives in the health and fitness space are holding people back. Mallory's credentials include NASM CPT, Precision Nutrition L1, and Functional Nutrition and Metabolism Specialization. Both Krysta and Mallory work with clients who favor boutique fitness studio classes as their preferred fitness routines. Whether these class environments are properly designed to achieve results is often up for debate. The short answer? It depends. The long answer? For a long time, I have had the absolute pleasure of working with Natalie South a Para-Athlete who has Cerebral Palsy. When we first met she told me a terrifying story about how she was treated in a class by a Personal Trainer who just wasn't willing to work with her, and her condition in order to let her get the most out of what a Fitness Class should be. Added to that Natalie has just one of the most open attitudes to trying anything and everything when it comes to her Fitness. This has lead me on a little quest to try and help open up the discussion around (Dis)Ability Fitness and how the Fitness Industry can and should do a lot better when it comes to this field...and as luck would have it I happened upon today's guest Danielle Roberts. Danielle is starting a Fitness Platform for Disabled people to be able to enjoy Fitness for themselves and is setting about to create an App with dedicated workouts for Disable people by Disabled Trainers and Coaches.
