(Caja Negra, 2024).

Marty speaks with Kaitlyn Kuehn (KK), creator and host of the Flora Funga Podcast, discussing recent developments in real world applications of fungi, and speculating about the possible roles fungi may play in our science fictional future.  We discuss their use as recreational drugs, and the current regulatory and legalization landscape.  We talk about creating new materials from fungi, from making bricks in space to creating new green materials for packaging, hats and shoes on earth.  We consider fungi in water efficient vertical farming, using yeasts and molds as pesticides, and if they might be helpful in farming insects for as a source of protein. And finally, we do a bit of science fictional thinking about Fungi as a possible agent of panspermia for seeding life on new worlds, creating ecological footholds on dead planets, and as a catalyst for biodiversity.  https://www.florafungapodcast.com/We touch on a couple FF episodes in this interview:Ep 135 with Chris Pauli from Tryptomics:https://www.florafungapodcast.com/florafungapodcast/135Ep 77 with Adam Cobb from the Soil Food Web Schoolhttps://www.florafungapodcast.com/florafungapodcast/77Buzzsprout (podcast host):https://thescienceinthefiction.buzzsprout.comEmail: thescienceinthefiction@gmail.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/743522660965257/Twitter:https://twitter.com/MartyK5463

I'm joined by Giuliana Furci, mycologist, and founder of the Fungi Foundation, the world's first non-governmental organization for the protection of fungi. Giuliana has over 20 years of fungi research experience and was recently awarded the National Geographic Conservation Leadership Award, making her the first mycologist ever to receive the honor. In our conversation, Giuliana reflects on her path to becoming an expert in fungi research and advocacy. She describes some of the intense expeditions that she's been on over the course of her career, as well as how the process for field research has changed since she got started in the late 90s. Giuliana is a champion for fungi recognition within legal conservation and protection frameworks, including leading the Fungi Foundation initiative for the word ‘funga' to be an equivalent term to flora and fauna. Giuliana and I also discuss the life lessons that she's gained from working with fungi, like the beauty of the interdependent nature of living organisms. We talk about the current mainstream collective consciousness of the power of fungi and why they've gone largely unnoticed in the past. Plus, Giuliana shares the expeditions, collaborations, and exciting projects happening at Fungi Foundation. Not plants, and not animals, fungi are an entirely separate kingdom of life, and they can do some really amazing things. For example, two episodes ago you heard from a startup called Funga that's seeking to implement fungal transplants in forests to enhance the carbon-capturing capacity of the soil. And you may know that my own company, The Better Meat Co., uses fungi fermentation to recreate the meat experience without animals.  But Bosque Foods is putting fungi to work in a very different way from what I do during my day job. They're not fermenting fungi in stainless steel fermenters. Rather, they're practicing what's called solid-state fermentation to create high-protein foods that will be center-of-the-plate for sure, but they're not seeking to mimic meat per se. They've raised $3 million in venture capital so far and are making products that at least from the photos I see online, look fungally fantastic.  In this episode I sit down with Bosque Foods CEO Isabella Iglesias-Musachio and chat about her lifelong passion that started her on this path. We discuss all types of cool things, including what to call the products she's making, how she intends to upcycle agricultural byproducts as a feedstock for her fungi, her pathway to commercialization, and more. So if you're interested in yet one more way fungi may save us, enjoy this episode. I think you'll be inspired by Isabella's story. Discussed in this episode Our past episodes with Funga (fungal forest transplants), Perfect Day (animal-free real dairy), and Aqua Cultured Foods Isabella recommends the How I Built This Podcast Article in the journal Nature on biochar from human feces More about Isabella Iglesias-Musachio Isabella is a passionate citizen scientist with an academic background in sustainability and agriculture, and a proven track record in helping tech startups scale internationally. She's now forging her own path in the food & biotech industry, with a focus on alternative protein and fermentation. At TechShop, as General Manager and then Director of Operations, Isabella played an essential role in building and managing multiple makerspaces in the United States and in France. Alongside the CEO, she oversaw the first international TechShop expansion to France, and gained experience in adapting an innovative startup to a new market and culture. More recently, Isabella decided to combine her skills in business development and expansion with my academic interest in food systems and agriculture. She joined Infarm, a leading ag-tech startup in Berlin, to build and head their first new market expansion team, and to establish their operations in the United States, Canada, and Japan. Beyond managing an all-star team to meet our growth goals, she was a key stakeholder in partnership building with major international retailers in North America and Asia (Kroger, Sobeys, Kinokuniya). Isabella's a life-long learner of food science, biotechnology, sustainability, and fermentation, as well as a passionate foodie, brewer, and fungi enthusiast. Today, she's merging her passions with her skills in business management, and forging her own path as an entrepreneur. Isabella's ultimate goal is to help accelerate the world's transition to environmentally sustainable, equitable, and animal-free protein.

Spreading the Good Word about Olivine Spreading: Kelly Erhart and Vesta

Sure, we need to stop emitting greenhouse gases. But even if we stopped all emissions today, there are so many that we've already put into the atmosphere that we need to remove them. Some folks are trying to build massive machines to suck C02 from the air, but Kelly Erhart has a different idea: just accelerate the earth's natural geochemical processes to remove that same C02 and safely deposit it in solid form at the bottom of our oceans. How to do it: Turns that when water touches this volcanic rock called olivine, the rock naturally removes C02 from the air. This process takes eons normally, but if you grind the olivine rock into a fine sand and spread it out over beaches, you can greatly accelerate the carbon-capturing capacity of the rock, while also protecting coastal communities.  Sounds like a noble idea, and when you combine it with the capacity to sell carbon credits, it sounds like a profitable idea, too. That's why Kelly Erhart founded Vesta in 2019. Her company's raised $6 million in equity so far (along with an additional $6 million in philanthropic dollars) and is now poised to raise a much larger Series A round so they can get into the olivine sand spreading business.  They're already conducting pilot programs in the Caribbean and say they'll soon be ready for much bigger footprint—or sandprint—projects that will make a tangible dent in the climate crisis. Discussed in this episode Our past episodes with Phoenix Tailings (valorizing mining waste). Funga (soil carbon capture), Global Thermostat (direct air carbon capture), and Coral Vita (regrowing coral reefs). TED talk by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson: “How to find joy in climate action” CarbonPlan: Data and science for climate action More about Kelly Erhart Kelly Erhart is Co-founder and President of Vesta. A believer in humanity's ability to become a "net-positive" to nature, Kelly has spent her career commercializing sustainable technologies and climate solutions through creative non-profit, for-profit, and hybrid organizations. Vesta is developing an ocean-based climate solution called Coastal Carbon Capture. Coastal Carbon Capture has the potential to be a billion-ton-per year NET solution with co-benefits such as lowering ocean acidity and helping to protect vulnerable coastal communities from sea level rise and erosion.

Can Fungi Fix the Climate Crisis? Colin Averill and Funga Are Working on it

You've heard of flora (plants). You've heard of fauna (animals). But have you heard of funga? That's the relatively new way to describe this third kingdom of life on earth: the vast number of species of fungi which aren't plants nor animals, but are a different branch on the tree of life. And it turns out that fungi are a lot more important than many in the past have realized. In fact,  they seem to play a major role in just how much carbon the soil is storing. Certain fungi, it seems, are particularly effective at sequestering carbon than others and in making trees grow a lot faster. Some even say that a one percent increase in soil-based carbon could be sufficient to stop an increase in CO2 in the atmosphere. Enter mycologist and entrepreneur Colin Averill and his new startup Funga. Having just raised a million dollars of seed venture capital, he's seeking to start reforesting depleted land and converting it into biodiverse carbon sinks much faster than would otherwise occur.  Think of it kind of like a fecal transplant (yep), but instead, it's more like a fungal transplant. It may sound disgusting, but we know that you can take feces from a healthy person, inoculate (aka insert) a sick person with them, and the good microbes populate the colon of the sick person, turning them well. Similarly, you can take rich, biodiverse soil from a healthy, old growth forest and inoculate agriculturally depleted land with it, and biodiverse life returns, causing trees to grow up to three times faster than they normally would (wood?). So, how do you make a business out of reforesting ex-agricultural land? Let Colin give you the scoop (of soil) on how he and Funga are going to monetize this type of carbon capture.  Discussed in this episode In a Vox story on deforestation, they note: "It's not toilet paper or hardwood floors or even palm oil. It's beef. Clearing trees for cattle is the leading driver of deforestation, by a long shot. It causes more than double the deforestation that's linked to soy, oil palm, and wood products combined, according to the World Wildlife Fund." Local FOX coverage of Funga's work. Our past episodes with Global Thermostat (direct carbon capture) and Coral Vita (rehabilitation of coral reefs). This CNN story about a startup called Living Carbon making faster-growing trees. Colin loves the book Entangled Life and the podcast My Climate Journey. More about Colin Averill Dr. Colin Averill is a Senior Scientist at ETH Zürich's Crowther Lab, where he and his team study the forest microbiome. How does incredible microbial diversity affect which trees are in a forest, forest carbon sequestration and climate change forecasts? He focuses on the ecology of mycorrhizal fungi - fungi that form a symbiosis with the roots of most plants on Earth. In addition to his academic role, he is the Founder of Funga PBC, a new startup harnessing forest fungal networks to address the climate crisis. He is also co-founder of SPUN – the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks – a non-profit dedicated to documenting and protecting mycorrhizal fungal life across the planet.

Giuliana's journey began at the age of 19, looking for native foxes in a forest on the Island of Chiloé when she came across a fungus that changed her course. Giuliana believes that fungi choose you, and she heard that call. She did not find field guides on fungi in Chile, so she decided to write one in 2006. She studied Aquaculture and went from studying algae and studies on the negative impacts of salmon farming, to leaving everything and starting the Fungi Foundation – the world's first NGO dedicated to fungal organisms.  Nathalie Kelley was born in Peru and raised in Australia by her Indigenous mother and grandmother. After working with street children in São Paulo, Brazil and Aboriginal inner-city youth in Redfern, Australia - she began her degree in Social Science and Policy at the University of UNSW. Not long after she started to work as an actress in film and television US, with notable roles in shows like Unreal, Dynasty and most recently as the star of ABC's The Baker and the Beauty.  Despite this change of course she remained inwardly mindful of her privilege and responsibility to her indigenous heritage and people. She has become an advocate for Indigenous peoples, regenerative agriculture, the soil and the undervalued but invaluable role of fungi in our ecosystem. She is now committed to using her story telling skills to be a voice for the voiceless - creating narratives of hope around the power of nature to regenerate and heal and the integral part humans have to play in this process. Jon Moore reporting!   This week’s show marks the one year anniversary of the podcast! Those of you who have been with us from the beginning, thanks, and to those you have joined us on the way, also thanks. It is an humbling and gratifying thing to see the stats improve over the year. It is also very motivating so, once again, thanks to all my listeners.   A post from Permie Flix this week seemed appropriate for the one year anniversary: Bacteria Surf the Fungal Web. Regular listeners will know my obsession with the fungal webs beneath forest communities and our need to preserve these structures from clear felling and ploughs. This video from the Scientific American Blog shows actual bacteria travelling along these fungal super highways. The video is only 1 minute 31 seconds long but seeing the bacteria moving along these fungal pathways will change the way you see the world forever. So much goes on underground, out of sight and until recently, out of mind. We are just scratching the surface on this world, pun intended. Have a look and change your life! Link in the show notes.   In contrast to this system of balance and flow comes a post from the blog: Joy of Reading entitled: Endless economic growth.   Quote: The Western monopoly capitalist paradigm that allows big money to chase after more for the profit of the few, using Mother Earth as a disposable factor of production, is neither sustainable nor logical based on modern science and natural law. End Quote.   I’ll admit this sounds a little Malthusian but I can live with that. The point is well made. Converting Nature into, not so much pieces of paper with an agreed value of exchange but now into arrangements of electrons to do the same job does seem like a fool’s errand. Many people no longer live in poverty as a result of this system but it is possible to, and I would, argue their poverty was a result of the system in the first place.   There is change afoot.   Quote: Endless economic growth based on finite natural resources is finished. It is a mind-centered egotistical fantasy to thrive at the expense of other Nations. The death of the paradigm has already begun. End Quote.   To follow on from this blog The Food Geographer brings us a call to action: Let’s all build an environmental mindset.   Quote: I have found myself in a situation that I think many people are in: Caring about the environment, but feeling paralysed by the enormity of the task at hand, and how ‘little’ they feel in comparison. End Quote.   This sums up our dilemma succinctly. Yet thefoodgeographer provides solutions:   Quote: I think what we need is a mindset shift, which will then lead to an action shift. Here are my simple suggestions: Remember that, unless you are the next Gandhi, you alone cannot change the entire world. End Quote.   So we each can do a little. In so doing we will discover the next Seymour, Mollison or Fukuoka. Thefoodgeographer suggests skills we could learn, improve on and/or pass onto others:   Quote:   Food growing – volunteer at an urban farm Vegetarian cooking – ask someone to teach you How to make your home more sustainable – turn your apartment into a garden! Recycling schemes in your area – contact your Council, support Hubbub’s new coffee cup campaign Air pollution – plant more trees, sign a campaign every week Wildlife conservation – vertical farming, or identifying bird songs to help conservation Improving public transport and biking – write a letter to your government rep. Young people and education – learn how to teach or host workshops at school   End Quote.   Now we could call this the Noble Green Eightfold Path to save ourselves and our communities.   Let’s examine each of these in turn.   Food growing, my eBook on no-dig gardening is a great starting point, even though self praise is faint praise, I am quite proud of it. Click here. We can all grow some food and surprisingly large amounts of it in small areas. Local urban and community gardens and farms are also ways into this wonderful activity. Vegetarian cooking, a simple google search will help if you are driven in this direction. A sustainable home is possible. Even a more sustainable home is a good start. Michael Mobbs in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia has done it and will show you how: Click Here. He lives off grid in an inner suburban terrace house. He generates his own energy  and much of his own food. So it really is doable. Recycling, this is so 1970s I shouldn’t even have to mention it. Maybe a look at the Zero Waste Movement might help. Air Pollution. All pollution in fact is a problem. Think of Bill Mollison’s quote: Waste is a resource is the wrong place. Starting there can and will change the world dramatically. Wildlife conservation is as much a given as recycling, I’d have thought but to that we add the specialisation of pollinator protection. No bees, little food variation. Pineapples, wheat, rice and potatoes. Not much of a diet. So this is an area we call make a difference. Public transport, pushbikes and so on as well as the move to electric vehicles helps. Provided the electricity is green, this will also help with #5, air pollution. Youth, it’s a cliche to say they are the future but educating children on these matters works. Way back in 1972, I had a teacher who, I see now, while a sufferer of anxiety, instilled in me the path towards this podcast. It all started with the wastefulness and pointlessness of coloured toilet paper. Yes such a thing did and I assume may still exist. Simple changes seem to make the biggest differences. After all, white toilet paper and even recycled white-ish toilet paper is much better for checking bowel health as well as planetary health. So, little things in the minds of children can have exponential change.   So there we have a Green manifesto and a set of steps to save the world. Let’s aim high!   To that end a friend and colleague of mine Rich Bowden and myself are starting a new podcast and blog in the near future. The Real Food Chain. There’s a link to the Facebook page in the show notes. The podcast will be interview based so keep your eye and ear out for that one. I’ll let you know when it launches.   And that brings us to the end of this week’s podcast.   If you’ve liked what you heard, could please follow the link in the show notes and vote for World Organic News in the Australian Podcast Awards Click here Thanks in advance.   Any suggestions, feedback or criticisms of the podcast or blog are most welcome. email me at podcast@worldorganicnews.com. Thank you for listening and I'll be back in our second year next week. **** Links WORLD ORGANIC NEWS in the Australian Podcast Awards Click here Bacteria Surf the Fungal Web – Permie Flix http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-e5R   Endless economic growth – Joy of Reading http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-e6p   Let’s all build an environmental mindset. – The Food Geographer http://wp.me/p5Cqpo-e6s   Quote:   Food growing – volunteer at an urban farm Vegetarian cooking – ask someone to teach you How to make your home more sustainable – turn your apartment into a garden!
