Do you believe that starting a business with nothing is possible? The American Dream is typically defined as the idea that the opportunity of achieving your highest aspirations is possible for anyone willing to put in the work. Jay Samit, laid out his case and experiment for this very idea in his latest book, Future Proofing You. Glenn Stearns, producer and star of the Discovery show, Undercover Billionaire, put himself to the test with $100, no contacts, no help, and just 90 days to build a million dollar business because he deeply believes the American Dream is still alive and possible. Although the playing field is not equal for everyone in every opportunity, it is still possible. Glenn's story is shocking and relatable for many because his honesty and vulnerability shows that attitude and belief are still king in how you decide to live your life and make moves. Glenn Stearns' personal mission is to prove the American Dream is still alive. As the founder of the country's largest privately held mortgage lending company, his entrepreneurial spirit and persistent work ethic have taken him down some interesting paths. But none of Glenn's success was handed to him; he built it from the ground up through a series of painful challenges that pushed him to get clear about his dreams. Through a difficult childhood, struggling in school, and becoming a teen parent, Glenn used each situation to strengthen his resolve. He wasn't going to let anything get in the way of his personal success. As an adult, Glenn applied the lessons from his youth to building his business. After defeating cancer and selling his mortgage lending company, he traveled the world with his family and gained new perspectives on life. His travels reinforced his belief in the opportunities America affords those who are willing to work for them. He publically experimented with this notion by starting from nothing and opening a successful BBQ restaurant on reality television. But success cannot be won by going it alone. Some advice he gives to young entrepreneurs is to surround yourself with good people who will help you achieve your dreams. Discover your unique gifts and find ways to capitalize on them. America is still the land of opportunity for those who know where to look. Stop Talking, Take Action, Get Results. Business and Personal Growth with Jen Du Plessis
This episode with Glenn Stearns was such a great interview! We wanted to feature it again! Caring for your team is caring for your company. With that perspective, the customer wins in the end because when people are happy, that resonates with your whole organization as well. Founder of Stearns Lending, Glenn Stearns, proves this to us. In this conversation with Jen Du Plessis, he dives into personal and professional success despite challenging starts in life. He went back to his roots in mortgage banking and visualized the next evolution of wholesale mortgage lending by focusing on building a company around its people. He explains how Stearns Lending grew to be the fifth largest privately held company. He also shares his Undercover Billionaire show, where he establishes a small business from scratch. Glenn also explains how he motivates a sales team into achieving organizational goals for business growth. Tune into this episode if you are a loan officer, branch manager, broker, or start-up entrepreneur who wants to learn and needs great advice in your professional journey! About Glenn Stearns At 25, after working as a loan officer for 10 months, Glenn formed his own mortgage company Stearns Lending LLC. In 2002, Glenn's business acumen was honored with Ernst & Young's prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year Award. By 2010, Stearns Lending LLC reached nearly $1 billion in monthly funded loan volume while experiencing record growth. Stearns not only survived the 2007 mortgage-lending crisis, it emerged as one of the top lenders in the country. Glenn attributes his resilience to putting “people before profit” and having transparent integrity in lending standards. Since 2010, Stearns Lending LLC has funded over 30-billion dollars in loans, making the corporate America's #1 Wholesale Lender in 2013 for two years in a row. But Glenn's life course has not been all about exceeding expectations and building a successful business. His unusual climb to the top has also led him to profound experiences and life lessons outside of the board room. Many have compared his journey to the fictional character Forrest Gump. Glenn's adventures range from being in the courtroom the day of the OJ Simpson murder case closing arguments ("If it doesn't fit, you must acquit."); traveling with astronauts and Vice Presidents; competing and winning the reality TV show "Gilligan's Island"; to owning a Montana ranch with John Elway and a private Caribbean island with Sir Richard Branson. In 2011, Glenn was the youngest member ever inducted into The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. The Award is given to select Americans, many historical and global change-makers, in recognition of personal and professional success despite challenging starts in life. Members must have also made giving back to others an imperative cornerstone of their success. Horatio Alger Members personally fund and award $9 million dollars annually in college scholarships to thousands of young students who demonstrate strength in the face of adversity, using their extreme hardships as motivators for achievement. In 2013, Glenn became the youngest member elected to the Association's prestigious Board of Directors. https://www.glennstearns.com/ Email Support@KineticSparkConsulting.com to get scheduled! Joining Alan on the “steppingstone of wisdom”, is Glenn Stearns, Entrepreneur, Mentor, Podcaster, Philanthropist, and star of “Undercover Billionaire”. Glenn shares his journey as to how he got to be where he is today. Growing up with humble roots, he wanted more and so he and his friend packed it up and traveled to California. It was there he started his mortgage business. From a mortgage business to a Title Company, onto becoming the Lender. Glenn shares that he failed and fell many of times before finding success. He had a pivoting point in 2007 when things came crashing down. However, he didn't give up. He owed a lot of money to a lot of people. He decided to get on a plane and visit every single person he owed money to and said, “let's fix this”, and he did. He became the largest Lender in America shortly after. As he is on top of the world, he finds out he had throat cancer. So, he took some time off to heal and be with his family. In 2014 he sold 70% of his company. In 2019 he came back and opened “Kind Lending”. Glenn then was challenged with an opportunity to show the world how to start a business from ground up with nothing but a cell phone and $100. He said, put me anywhere in the country with no money and no contacts and I can make it happen again. Undercover Billionaire was born. Glenn shares that he felt for a moment that he was going to be a colossal failure in front of the world as he did the show. But the show turned out to be a smashing hit. Every time he got into a deep hole; he gets himself out because he doesn't give up. The show became an inspiration to many and the outpour he received from around the world made it worthwhile. Alan talks about his struggle as an entrepreneur, and the failure he faced. It took him to realize that to win you must lose, sometimes lose it all. Advice from Glenn. It's a crazy time. In business you're always going to find that it doesn't always go the way you plan it. The world may be against you, from weather to industry changes, even political. Be prepared for change. Reality is that while we are trying to create ourselves, we need to be authentic. Surround yourself with the right people. Having the authentic ability to connect to your people. Having integrity and doing it right. From Karma to planting seeds. Whether good or bad, eventually you will find out what you planted. Work hard and be authentic. Glenn Stearns was born to alcoholic parents, diagnosed dyslexic, and failed 4th grade. He fathered a child at the age of 14 and graduated high school in the bottom ten-percent of his class. While some of his friends lost their lives to drugs and alcohol, and others spent time in prison, Glenn's path intersected with mentors who gave him motivating examples of how to not meet the fate of his friends and instead take control of his destiny. He took that life-changing encouragement and ran with it. Glenn became the first person in his family to attend college and graduated with a degree in economics from Towson University. Inspired by stories of people who took risks and achieved their grandest ambitions, he then moved to California where he slept on the kitchen floor of a one-bedroom apartment that he shared with five other recent grads. While waiting tables, Glenn continued to search for new opportunities to rise above his humble beginnings. At 25, after working as a loan officer for 10 months, Glenn formed his own mortgage company Stearns Lending. By 2010, Stearns Lending reached nearly $1 billion a month in funding while experiencing record growth. Stearns not only survived the 2007 mortgage-lending crisis, it emerged as one of the top lenders in the country. Glenn attributes his resilience to putting “people before profit” and having transparent integrity in lending standards. Since 2010, Stearns Lending has funded over 150-billion dollars in loans, making the corporation America's #1 Wholesale Lender in 2013. The company has helped nearly 1,000,000 families achieve home ownership. In 2014, Blackstone purchased the majority share of Stearns Lending for an undisclosed sum. Glenn is also the founder of Anivive Life Science, Stearns Wholesale, Stearns Holdings, Stearns Ventures, Artemis Holdings, TriVerify, TriMavin, United Housing Services, Inc., and Mortgage Services Providers Holdings. He is an investor in Indi.com and Lender Price and the largest shareholder of California-based Infinity bank. In 2011, he was inducted into The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. This Award is given to individuals in recognition of personal and professional success despite humble and challenging beginnings, in addition to personal initiatives and accomplishments in giving back to others. In 2013, he became the youngest Member elected to the Horatio Alger Association's prestigious Board of Directors. Glenn and his wife Mindy are very active in the community having been honored for their dedication to community service and philanthropy with Muhammad Ali's Parkinson's Foundation “Couple of the Year” Award, Starkey Hearing Foundation's “American Couple of the Year,” Orange County's “Giving is Living Award” and the Orangewood Children's Foundation's “Golden Heart Award”. In this Podcast, Glenn shares his wisdom about getting out of your comfort zone and leadership, resilience and failure; his thoughts about “overnight success” stories and the boundaries between mentors and friends, as well as his definition of the American Dream. So many aspects of our daily lives depend on our outlook and mindset. How do you respond to challenges, mistakes and negative situations? Do you view them as problems or opportunities? Do you let your adversities define your life? Do you pass up opportunities out of fear of failing? My guest on today's episode Glenn Stearns believes you should use failure and adversity as a catalyst for change and not a reason to quit. Glenn was born to alcoholic parents, diagnosed dyslexic, and failed 4th grade. He became a father at age 14 and graduated high school in the bottom ten-percent of his class. A major turning point of his life came after finishing college when he decided to take his destiny in his own hands following another night of partying. Ironically, he made this choice at a local bar that I used to frequent back in the day in Towson, MD. He then moved to California in search of opportunities to rise above his humble beginnings. At 25, after working as a loan officer for 10 months, Glenn formed his own mortgage company, Stearns Lending LLC. By 2010, Stearns Lending LLC reached nearly $1 billion in monthly funded loan volume while experiencing record growth. Stearns not only survived the 2008 mortgage-lending crisis, it emerged as one of the top lenders in the country. Since 2010, Stearns Lending LLC has funded over 30-billion dollars in loans. In 2015, Glenn sold a majority of Stearns Lending to Blackstone and embarked on a hiatus with his family on his yacht. You would think that things would be “smooth sailing” from this point on. However, the tides turned and Glenn faced another major storm, cancer, which he beat twice. This coupled with an innate hunger to reinvent himself again was the inspiration for the show “Undercover Billionaire” in 2019. In the subsequent seasons that followed, Glenn has remained on board as an advisor and executive producer and now has started yet another mortgage company with his wife Mindy which we talk about. Glenn shares his entrepreneurial journey, how he built one of the most successful mortgage companies in an industry that is highly competitive. He reveals some secrets that can apply to anyone who's interested in becoming resilient in the thick of uncertainty. We also talk about his story of cancer survival, why you shouldn't solely chase money, and why he wasn't happy when he sold his company. Topics Discussed Glenn's life before California How Glenn was inspired to start his own company and how he did it Weathering the stormy '2008' financial crisis and how it applies to today's struggles Glenn's advice to those on the verge of despair and how to build resilience How Glenn fought cancer twice and the lessons learned from it How the hit show "Undercover Billionaire" got started What keeps Glenn inspired and "hungry" Why you shouldn't solely chase money Glenn's hacks to building a sustainable business GLENN'S HACK TO BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS Success is not overnight. Quit chasing after materialism and focus on building a strong organization and quality leadership. Figure out what your goal is and never be in a haste to get to your destination or put a deadline on your success. Enjoy every moment you have to build and grow. It's not about having your game plan all mapped and then freaking out when it doesn't go as planned because it won't. It's about being a problem solver. That's what you are as an entrepreneur. Takeaways When faced with life's challenges, understand that 'This too shall pass.' Nothing stays constant, not even crisis. If you must build a sustainable business, surround yourself with great people of like interest and passion. Learn to communicate at the verge of despair. Prioritize family. Make sure they're happy because there's a lot more currency than money. There's happiness currency, health currency and there's joy currency. Each week, HousingWire interviews financial services experts who can help make sense of the latest headlines sponsored by our partners at Arch MI and Quicken Loans Mortgage Services. This week, Glenn Stearns, who has undoubtedly been one of the biggest names in mortgage lending over the last 30 years, joins the Housing News Podcast for its fourth episode of season three.Stearns, who founded Stearns Lending in 1989, joins the Housing News Podcast to discuss his new company, Kind Lending, which touts itself as a “fresh and edgy approach to mortgage banking.”Additionally, the trailblazer discusses current market conditions, which have been changing each day as Coronavirus continues to take its toll on the mortgage industry.According to Stearns, who survived the Housing Crisis of the 2000s, if mortgage companies want to survive this period of uncertainty, they will need to invest in technology and learn how to better communicate. Here's more detail on the topics of discussion this week:Glenn Stearns founded the mortgage company that carries his name, Stearns Lending, in 1989. And in the convening years, Stearns helped build the company into one of the biggest mortgage companies in the nation. But Stearns has laid somewhat low in the last year or so, but he is being quiet no more. Stearns is launching a new mortgage company, Kind Lending.Quicken Loans recently joined the thousands of companies that are encouraging (if not requiring) their employees to work from home to combat the spread of COVID-19. But the nation's largest mortgage lender is hardly the only company that is moving to a remote work policy as the concern over the virus worsens. The Federal Finance Agency, Guaranteed Rate, Caliber Home Loans, and United Wholesale Mortgage are just a few names reassessing their workplace procedures. The White House and the Federal Housing Finance Agency are calling for up to 12 months of mortgage forbearance for Americans who can't pay their bills because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The amount of people needing that help is so big, it might require the Federal Reserve to flex its muscles, according to a report from Cowen Washington Research Group. Specifically, the Fed might have to use Sec. 13 of the Federal Reserve Act that covers emergency lending, it said. And here are links to the topics discussed:1) Glenn Stearns is back, launches Kind Lendinghttps://www.housingwire.com/articles/glenn-stearns-is-back-launches-kind-lending/2) Here's how the mortgage industry is reacting to the coronavirus https://www.housingwire.com/articles/heres-how-the-mortgage-industry-is-reacting-to-the-coronavirus/3) Can the Fed help Americans get mortgage forbearance?https://www.housingwire.com/articles/can-the-fed-help-amer
