Beau Woods knows firsthand how every moment counts when it comes to medical cybersecurity. He launched his career in a hospital, where it wasn't always possible for doctors to punch in complex passwords or spare a second thought for cybersecurity. Our nationality has long been a part of how we identify ourselves.  But Alexis Wichowski surveys the rise of “net states,” big tech companies that are, increasingly, taking on roles traditionally played by nation-states. Wichowski is a public servant, teacher, and writer.  She serves as Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Innovation and Acting Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Broadband for the City of New York.  She also serves as an adjunct associate professor in Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, teaching in the Technology, Media, and Communications specialization.  She previously served New York City as an Associate Commissioner at the newly established Department of Veterans’ Services and a Disaster Relief Field Responder before and during 9/11.  She has also served as Program Officer for the U.S. Department of State’s Office of eDiplomacy and Diplomatic Innovation Division and as Director of Media Analysis & Strategy at the Permanent Mission of the United States to the United Nations during the Obama administration. She regularly conducts research and writes about the impact of media, technology and government.  Several of her recent publications include. “Net States Rule the World,” in WIRED, “What Government Can and Should Learn from Hacker Culture,” in The Atlantic and “The U.S. can’t regulate Big Tech companies when they act like nations,” in The Washington Post, among others.  Her book, “The Information Trade: How Big Tech Conquers Countries, Challenges Our Rights, and Transforms Our World,” was published in 2020.  Wichowski holds a PhD in Information Science from the University at Albany’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a BA in Chinese from Connecticut College. Higinio "w0rmer" Ochoa was once upon a time banned from using the Internet by the FBI. This was because as a formerly convicted hacktivist he, as part of the Anonymous movement supporting the Occupy Wall Street movement hacked into some police databases in the USA as well as being involved with shutting down several companies websites and and online services around 2011 and 2012. However, that is some time ago as he is now an Information Security professional in the USA who cares about a secure, private and open Internet. In this podcast I got to chat with Hig' about various subjects ranging from exploring what culture is all about, how metadata in a photo lead to his FBI arrest, and we also explore various scenarios on the future of the Internet. With 20 years of experience in the Information Technology and specifically the Information Security field, he is undoubtedly one of the leading people to explore these topics with. Hig' also had an episode of Showtime's Dark Net on Netflix dedicated to documenting how he lives without using the Internet and the devices he used in his "lab" on a daily basis during that time.

Hackers don't follow a manual. They look at systems with an open mind. Hackers nurture the sense of the inner rebel. They want to truly understand the inner workings of a system. Hackers aren't creating havoc, they're exposing problems that are already there. And they do it because it's the only way to get attention to the problem. Security professionals understand the value of finding existing problems, that's why they instituted and support bug bounty programs that provide a financial incentive to hack. Hackers are not afraid to be challenged. If cybersecurity students jump straight from schooling to the corporate world, and they don't have time to explore their desire to hack, they won't have the opportunity to create their own moral code when it comes to hacking. It's important for a hacker to discover their moral compass, because there are going to be situations where a hacker will have the opportunity to do bad things without getting caught. How will they handle it?

Speakers Dr Tim Rayner and Diana Renner Type Live Conversation About this conversation As leaders, we are rewarded for our knowledge and expertise. However, our knowledge may also limit our perspective. In new, unfamiliar and uncertain situations, what we know can restrict our ability to think differently and see problems in a fresh light. The more we harness received knowledge, the less we learn about the situation, and the narrower our point of view becomes. In these volatile and uncertain times, it is vital that leaders learn to see problems in the broadest possible light. Leaders need to cultivate a new relationship to uncertainty – one that is attentive, authentic, and generative; that involves letting go of knowing and control; and contributes to their ability to see the broader system. Instead of rushing to close down the experience of uncertainty, leaders must learn to sustain the experience and turn uncertainty into an experience of raw possibility. The art of focus in uncertainty is about zooming in and zooming out. More About The Speakers Dr Tim Rayner Dr Tim Rayner is the Director of Education and Culture at The Merrier. He is an internationally-recognised philosopher and action educator with over 10 years experience working in social entrepreneurship and leadership development. Tim’s recent book, Hacker Culture and the New Rules of Innovation, explores the impact of software hacking and startup culture on 21st century business innovation. He teaches ‘Leadership, Teams and Scalability’ in the MBA (Entrepreneurship) Program at UTS Business School. Diana Renner Diana Renner is an organisational consultant, teacher and award-winning author. As the director and co-founder of the Uncharted Leadership Institute and the creator of Not Knowing and Not Doing Labs, Diana helps individuals and organisations develop new skills to navigate uncertainty and make progress on complex challenges. Diana is the co-author of Not Knowing: the art of turning uncertainty into possibility, awarded 2015 Management Book of the Year in the U.K. and translated in 10 languages, and Not Doing: the art of effortless action, published in 2018. The culture of mathematics is a strange topic. It is almost as important to the history of mathematics as the theorems that have come from it, yet it is rarely commented upon, and it is almost never taught in schools. One form of mathematical inquiry that has cropped up in the last two centuries has been the algorithm. While not exclusive to this time period, it has achieved a renaissance, and with the algorithm has come what has come to be known as "hacker culture". From Lord Byron to Richard Stallman, from scratches on paper to masses of wire, hacker culture has influenced the way in which we interact with conveniences that algorithms have endowed upon our society.
