Holly Dunn is originally from Colorado. She started racing around 1982. Her Brother chad raced and she soon followed. Her first race was at Boothill BMX. Soon after she started racing her family moved to Arizona. Moving to AZ really kicked off her racing. The first team she rode for was Bike Barn. Dunn says she raced the boys most times. She says it was normal for her and her brother to hit three local races each day on weekends.  Dunn says hitting the national circuit soon followed. Her first factory team that sent all over the country was called ESP. Literally Dunn says she hit every race she could. The one thing she told she never worried about was burn out. Leaving ESP she went to Pedal Power for a short stint and eventually landed on the all girl team Titan. Eventually Dunn walked away from BMX. Before coming back in 2015 she would have two kids with freestyle legend Jim Burgess and living a bit of life. By 2018 Dunn said she enough is enough and moved on from BMX again. But like I say "Once BMX is in your blood it's hard to stay away." Dunn is back racing again on a part time bases. She even qualified for worlds this year. In this interview we also touch on her friendship with Robert Raymonde, losing Burgess, and her desire to continue racing. The Great AntidoteAdam Smith said, "Science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

Before the Story I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery, murder, and mayhem. Some episodes will be my own stories, others will be classics that helped shape the mystery genre we know today. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes (unless it's really bad)  This is Season 2. This season contains adaptations of stories published in the 1800s. These stories are some of the first considered to be mysteries. For that reason, this season is called The Originators.  Today’s story is about guilty pleasures, pirates, and things that go knock-knock-knock in the night. This is Human Affect, an adaptation of The Haunted and the Haunters by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Our story today was published in 1856.  Episode Materials  Read the original: There are several places where you can find The Haunted and the Haunters. Gutenberg is one of them. https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1831 (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/1831)   Cast of Characters: Our Detective. Unnamed, a gentleman of some means. Definitely not married, no kids Mr. Johnson. Older gentleman, recently inherited the house. He believes it is haunted. Sarah. Housekeeper who died in the house. As a young woman, she rented the house as the lady. Franco. Our Detective’s right hand man. Courageous, capable, an all around good guy. My Two Cents Gotta tell you, I did not love this story. It left me with too many questions to have a satisfied ending. Who did Sarah kill? Her Brother? Were the letters from her husband? What happened to her husband? Did Sarah and presumably her husband kill / starve her nephew? Did the house make them all crazy and that’s why they killed? Did the house cause her financial misfortunes?   In the vision, who was the man who stabbed Sarah? Her brother or her husband? Or wasn’t that Sarah but the 1759 Pirate’s lover? The pirate from 1759 cursed the house? He killed his mistress and her other lover, then shimmied down through the trapdoor, set up an elaborate curse, left his clothes and money, climbed out, sealed up the hole, built a floor over it, and left England? Why curse the house if you’ve killed the people you were pissed at? Did he lock some part of him in that house (if so he was an idiot) or did he die and never leave (in which case where are the bones?) How did the prior owners of the house not notice a whole chunk of the main floor was not accessible? The room had to be above ground level because there was a window, even if it was bricked up. And the writer kept forgetting about the dog, except when he killed it. The narrator is searching this entire house and the dog is where? I couldn't let that one go, I had to fix it in the adaptation.  I will tell you what I did like about it. It is an early example of a mystery in the sense that, as I said in the beginning, the narrator is working to solve the mystery. If it were told differently, such as from the POV of documenting the activity, or a fool-hearty dare, it wouldn’t toe over into mystery. I also liked that it was actually haunted. The story sets up to find some LIVING person in that little room chasing everyone away. Thinking about it, it was one disguise away from being a Scooby Doo mystery. The narrator uses logic to protect his mind from the supernatural attack. There was a lot of inner monologue reasoning I didn’t work into the story. Basically, the narrator believes that the supernatural is impossible. If something like a ghost exists, then it is possible and, ergo, not supernatural. So he tries to logic his way through the experience, expecting a human root. He finds one, but not in the way we expect. It’s a ghost / spirit / whatever.  After the... Support this podcast

Sorry, pals. Not feeling up to recording this week so you can read what I have to say about all of these wonderful people in the show notes! Hope you all have had and are having a wonderful holiday week! 2 AM Wake Up Call -- “I Don’t Know What’s Bad For Me” (This Is Enough) 2 AM Wakeup Call has been making music since 2017, describing his music as “Southern Emo.” What calls me to these two songs are his deep-cutting vulnerability (it’s not enough you see a man talk about feeling physically used) and playful instrumentation.   2. Ella Marie Salter -- “White Flag” (Beverly) Hailing from Southern Alabama, Salter has a truly impressive voice. She belongs in the pantheon of country music’s great singers -- and her songwriting ain't bad, either   3. Michelle Brooke -- “Storm” (Single) I wrote this song up a few months ago for The Boot! As a queer writer, I think it’s really important to lift up all LGBTQ voices in the roots music community. I look forward to more allies joining me this year! Speaking of allies, I love that Rachel Hurley and Frank Keith at Sweetheart PR are going above and beyond to work with queer artists, even if they’re struggling financially.   As for Michelle Brooke, she’s another addition to that pantheon of great voices. A self-described theater kid growing up, she brings that Broadway pizzazz to the barnhouse. This song is so cathartic in so many ways and is about the end of her first same-sex relationship after coming out.   4. The Strangemakers -- “Shot Down” (Off the Floor) The Strangemakers are a decorated folk rock band from Canada. You can hear the assurance in their groove on “Shot Down” and it reeled me in. Patreon listeners will hear “Wait On Me,” which sounds really familiar to me, but I couldn’t figure out if it was a cover and didn’t have time to ask them. Anyway, it’s been stuck in my head for a whole two weeks.   5. Stephanie Anne Johnson and the Hidogs -- “Take This Love” (Take This Love) You may know Stephanie Anne Johnson from The Voice; on this album she enlists some of Seattle’s best. And yeah -- one more for that pantheon. I love the warmth in her lyrics and confidence in her performance!   6. El Cantador “My Way” (Translation Wave) This is one of my deep dives into the ol’ Adobe & Teardrops vault. Translation Wave came out in 2013 and it seems to be their last release; the band was led by Heath Underwood, who now has a band called BUNCH, whose 2015 album I wrote up.   7. “Lay Me Down” -- Brendan Kelly and the Wanderers (Too Late to Pray: Defiant Chicago Roots) Bloodshot Records just celebrated their 25th anniversary with this fantastic comp album. It shows the beauty and diversity of Chicago’s roots music scene.   8. Nilufer Yanya -- “In Your Head” (Miss Universe) I was gobsmacked after Nilufer Yanya’s performance on World Cafe. Anyone who thinks rock’n’roll is dead needs to shut their soundhole.   9. Sid Kingsley -- “Sweet Viriginia” (Single) Kingsley grew up playing jazz in a small town. When he joined the Coast Guard, he was encouraged to continue playing sax. After leaving the Coast Guard and moving to Richmond, VA, he found that he couldn’t avoid his calling anymore and took the plunge with his first album. So far, it’s shaping up great.   10. Lizzie Huffman and Her Brother’s Band -- “Tumblers and Tea” (Lizzie Huffman and Her Brother Band) Another one from the vault. I can’t find any online presence for Lizzie Huffman, so if you know where she is please let her know there are still people enjoying her music. Meanwhile, you can tell how old this song is because she talks about tight jeans -- as a good thing! Pretty sure it’s from 2011.   11. Stevie C. Bowen -- “Be Kind” (Music From the Rooms of My Head) Hailing from Brooklyn and with a moustache that might make Von feel jealous, Bowen doesn’t have much biographical info out there. But maybe that’s because his guitar needs to speak for itself.   12. Adam Hill -- “Magnetic North” (Water in the Draw) A couple weeks ago I mentioned on Twitter that I was finally getting more honest-to-goodness alt-country through SubmitHub. Adam Hill is one of those people. While Hill describes himself as an inventive musician, he’s sticking to three chords and the truth here and I love it.

Vallejo residents attended a city council meeting this week wearing bright yellow stickers that read "Coked Cops Kill." They opposed efforts by the police union to delete a section of its contract that outlines when an officer could be ordered to receive drug and alcohol testing. Councilors approved the new contract, limiting when officers may be subject to drug and alcohol tests. Guest: Ericka Cruz Guevarra, producer for The Bay Read Ericka's full story on the meeting here. My Grandmother has dementia. She recently developed a pronounced tremor in her hands so I took her to the doctors. I thought it could be her blood sugars. The doctor thought it was probably stress and anxiety brought on by the recent death of her Brother. He prescribed smiling and laughter. Something we could all use more of. My Grandmother occasionally forgets her husband, daughter and four siblings are dead. Her Brother just gone was 20 years younger than her, the youngest of five. She was the oldest. Now she is the last.

The following brief history is from the South Carolina Department of Archives and    History, "The State Dept. of Mental Health has undergone several name changes in its history. The original name was the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum (1821-1895) which was followed by the South Carolina State Hospital for the Insane (1896-1919), the South Carolina State Hospital (1920-1963), and finally the State Dept. of Mental Health (1964 to the present)." I am now currently awaiting to hear back from the archives.” Book Reviews Have a Voice:  Post positive reviews on Goodreads, Amazon and Lulu for genealogy books you enjoy! Richard Needs Your HelpAs I was going back over some items I have in my Aunt's photo collection, I found two items that I can't seem to find out anything about. Maybe you or your listeners can help. They are called “Foto Folds" and are raised pictures in a foldable container. I've attached three photos: 1)      Foto Fold – Closed image shows the two closed. One is the back and the other the front which is die cut. 2)      Foto Fold – Opened image shows both opened. One is a single picture and the other my Aunt, Her Brother and their Mother. 3)      Foto Fold – Side View shows that the item is not flat but raised. The raised part fits into the cut out piece on the right which then closes to the foldable container. They are most likely dated between the late 1940s and early 1950s.   What do you think our descendants will wish they had of ours 100 years in the future? Chris in Norwalk, CT chimed in with “Voice recordings (or, to go a bit further, video).  My family has had a touch of music for a few generations now.  My great-grandfather was a musical performer & my great-grandmother played piano. In fact I had recorded him singing shortly before he died.  Unfortunately, the tape was lost long ago.  In another branch of my family, I had a great-grandfather who was a bandleader in Providence, RI.  He played cornet & years later my father took it up as well…I play as well, but can't hold a candle to him.  I wish I thought to record him as well.” Google Earth Sharon in White Lake, MI   “I watched your webinar on the Roots Magic  It was fantastic.  In October, I went with my elderly parents and my husband to the Rives, Michigan cemetery where my great great grandparents were buried.  With the information I picked up in your webinar, I discovered that the original homestead was on the same road less than a mile north of where they were buried.  It was so neat being able to see where my family first located.  Thank you very much!” Kevin Writes to Share a Success Story“I have you to thank.  If not for your podcast about Familysearch.org and Family History Centers, I may not have found my great grandfather, Emanuel Babiuk's birth record from Ukraine…Your podcast (even though it was published several years ago) pointed me in the right direction to help me find, order and view the film at the local FHC.  If not for you, I may have had to wait for the film to be digitized and indexed.  P.S.  I subscribe to anything Lisa Louise Cooke and have 66 Gems and 13 Premium Gems to entertain me.” From Dan in North Carolina“I have been listening to you podcast for a while now and have gotten a lot from it…I decided to write a book about my father. I spent the summer collecting stories and photos. I decided to use the web site . This way anyone that wanted a book could order one. I finished about a month ago and had a lot of fun in the process.  I know most of the stories if not all but when you put them all down in a book it takes on a new life.  Again thank you for the motivation I need. Next? Maybe my grandparents.”  GEM: Interview with Tom Kemp, Director of Genealogy Products at GenealogyBank Click here to search   GEM: Your Life in 5 Minutes with Sunny Morton Part 4 Get Sunny's book "Your Life & Times: A Guided Journal for Collecting Your Stories by clicking this link:
