Clare Degraaf is an author and a Christian speaker. He wrote the book "The 10 Second Rule: Following Jesus Made Simple," which focuses on Christian teachings and encourages readers to make quick, faith-based decisions in their daily lives. Clare is also involved in Christian ministry and speaking engagements. His talks and writings emphasize practical Christianity and living out one's faith in everyday situations. I'm joined by Clare on The Wow Factor today to talk about his first entrepreneurial ventures and how an invention he patented turned his father's business around. He describes how he felt when he was diagnosed with a potentially terminal illness as a young man and why it made him question his behavior as a ‘standard-issue Christian'. Clare also shares more about why he decided to write his book “The 10-Second Rule,” the intention behind it, and how the concepts in the book have helped him live more faithfully. “For Christians, the need for certainty is often the enemy of obedience.” - Clare Degraaf “I knew a lot about God. I just wasn't living for God.” - Clare Degraaf “Leaders have to decide how much is enough.” - Clare Degraaf This Week on The Wow Factor: Why Clare patented a tilt mechanism and how it became a huge seller The impact on Clare of running the family business at just 22 after his father died Clare's serious diagnosis at the age of 31 with three young children and why it made him question his faith How he built a deeper relationship with Jesus by genuinely talking to Him and sharing his life What made Clare avoid embracing Christianity for so long Why Clare felt so depressed after selling his company despite making millions of dollars When and why Clare began to pour into the lives of other people The power of shared experiences and how they can change your perspective What Clare has learned about letting go of materialism through his mentoring More about Clare's book “The 10-Second Rule”, why he wrote it, and the concepts it covers The importance of empathy as a leader and asking "why" to understand the perspective of the others on your team Clare Degraaf's Words of Wisdom: Christian leaders ought to have the kind of competence and character that people will follow them, even if they don't have to. In this episode Garth and Jane Halonen (University of West Florida) interview Dan Willingham from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA as part of the 2023 East Coast Tour. They begin with a discussion of Dan's new book, Outsmarting Your Brain. When they trace back his interest in the topic, it may have emerged from high school student studies about self-regulation regarding emotion and study skills. Interestingly, Dan 'publishes' this book in reverse order -- he writes the book first, then writes the prospectus, then goes looking for the publisher. He completes his undergraduate education at Duke and his graduate education at Harvard but does a brief stint in between in a congressional office in Washington, D.C. This trio covers so much ground during this conversation, including myth-busting a certain topic, the courses Dan teaches at UVA, what his parents studied in graduate school, thoughts on teaching evaluation, the hidden curriculum, and more.

Tony Monaco began his keyboard life at age eight, on the accordion. When he was twelve, his destiny as a jazz organist was sealed when he first heard Jimmy Smith. An enthusiastic student, Tony began working in Jazz clubs as a teenager in his native Columbus, Ohio, guided by local organ gurus Hank Marr and Don Patterson. For further inspiration, he studiously absorbed the mastery of Jimmy McGriff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. All would play a role in the development of his musical palette. On Tony's sixteenth birthday, his prayers were answered. He received an encouraging phone call from Jimmy Smith, who soon became his Mentor/Teacher. Four years later, Jimmy Smith invited Tony to play at his club in California--a peak lifetime experience for Tony. From 1980 to 2006, Tony stood by his family businesses and married to have three daughters, while running Monaco's Palace Italian restaurant for ten years while performing weekly in the lounge. Tony then entered the food brokerage industry peaking towards Torchbearer status with SYSCO Foods. Always inspired by music, Tony then went to work as an assistant Broadcast producer for a prominent ad agency learning his production skills and playing gigs at night to continue supporting his family. After graduating from college with a B.S.B.A. from Franklin University in 1989, Tony's occupation changed again to supervisor of Monaco Concrete (“my Father needed a good manager and my daughters were getting close to going to college!”). Tony now enjoys and concentrates on all his musical energies flourishing ultimately as he pursues his passions. In April 2000, Tony met fellow jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco, who offered to produce a debut CD for him. This collaboration resulted in the critically acclaimed "Burnin Grooves”. The international success of the recording served as the catalyst for regional and national tours. This success was followed by two more releases for Summit Records that received critical acclaim and significant sales, charting in the Jazzweek Top 10. In September 2003, Summit Records released "A New Generation”, a unique recording featuring both Tony's and Joey DeFrancesco's Trios. They recorded the project using two "Hammond-Suzuki New B3's" as Tony was awarded a major endorsement role with Hammond and Suzuki. As Tony's reputation has grown, he has been blessed to play with some of the greatest musicians in jazz, including Mel Lewis, Lewis Nash, Red Holloway, Plas Johnson, Sonny Fortune, Jon Faddis, Adam Nussbaum, Bruce Forman, Harvey Mason, Chester Thompson (drummer) Herlin Riley, Matt Wilson, Jeff Clayton, Terrell Stafford, Eric Alexander, Late Bobby Durham, Russell Malone, Peter Bernstein, Paul Bollenback, Bruce Forman, Kevin Mahogany, Victor Lewis, Pat Martino, Fareed Haque, and even George Benson. An ardent student of the organ, it's no surprise that Tony is an accomplished teacher as well. In addition to private students, classes and clinics, Tony has produced a series of instructional DVDs titled "Playing Jazz Hammond" that have quickly become indispensable for any serious student of the organ. Tony teaches Lessons online with a system he created giving lessons one on one online to anyone from anywhere around the globe! Presently, Tony maintains a busy schedule touring, including festival appearances, clinics, and workshops In 2007 he appeared on the cover of Keyboard Magazine. In April 2012, Tony released "Celebration Life * Love * Music, a two-disc set of all originals as he continues to Celebrate his Musical gifts and shares his skills with everyone. Tony's drive as an innovator and missionary continues to carry forward his passion for the Hammond Organ. Now Executive Producer of the Summit Records subsidiary Chicken Coup Records, he has recorded and released CDs for several undiscovered organists around the globe, and his role as an educator has allowed him to spread and cultivate many new hopefuls to the art of the jazz organ. In 2014 Tony released Furry Slippers with fellow guitarist Fareed Haque and Drummer Greg Fundis! Topping the Jazz and College charts and gaining several reviews! Tony continues his mission to raise awareness and appreciation of the jazz organ and its importance in genres as diverse as traditional Gospel, RnB, and Modern Jazz. He is formulating new strategies and record deals using his network through Chicken Coup Records to help himself and his peers and students advance in this ever-changing music market and utilize new technologies and markets. Tony is a vital source of musical experience, knowledge, and humility ready, willing, and able !!! In 2017, Tony celebrated a special anniversary, celebrating 50 years as a musician! We were fortunate to have Iain Ritchie and John Dixon come down south from Canada while we were having a team practice for the upcoming WCB contest "The Classic" to share their knowledge and criticism for us to become better prepared as a team. Top notch guys to lend their time out of their busy schedules to just to come help us! Says a lot about who they are, as respectable men. So thank you for that Iain and John. Of course since we had them here in our presence, we had to do a podcast with them. Getting to hear Iain's story about how and why he moved from Scotland to Canada was really cool to hear, amongst other topics discussed in this episode that you'll have to tune in to hear. John is a multi-generational farrier who grew up learning how to shoe horses from his dad, Steve Dixon" primarily and then also working for Iain for many years too. They've both been on the Canadian Farriers Team multiple times as well, and was neat to hear how that process is to qualify for that team. There's multiple times in this episode that we almost fell out of our chairs laughing so hard at John's sense of humor and jokes!

There is an old Chinese proverb that says, “If you want to be happy for an hour, take a nap. If you want to be happy for a day, go fishing. If you want to be happy for a year, win some money. And if you want to be happy for the rest of your life, help other people.” Protecting and helping people grow are the most noble of professions. And that is why they can also be the most rewarding. We all have some knowledge to share that can assist someone along their path of happiness. Conversely, we are all often in need of our own Mentors, Coaches, and Teacher to help us define our path. It is not about creating another YOU; it is about helping them become the best version of themselves. Here are some of the guides that you may become or are seeking. Coaches help people achieve specific goals based on individual needs. Mentors provide guidance in specific areas based on their past-experience. Teachers provide education on new skills and knowledge based on what they have learned. Consultants help implement strategies connected to their areas of their expertise. Counselors provide healing. As a Coach, Mentor, Teacher, or however you define yourself, remember to… B – Build your students up A – Always be Actively Listening C – Carefully Constructed Feedback O – Observe obstacles and options N – Never Judge or Force Connecting with the right guide can help you navigate your paths of happiness. And for those of you who want to share, you will learn that you will always get more from giving than taking. www.MasterHappiness.com www.WhatsYourBacon.com #SalesCoach #PublicSpeaking #Keynote #Career #Relationships #MasterHappiness #Jalove #Bacon #WRLR #BaconBits #MartyJalove #WhatsYourBACON #Mentor #Coach #Teacher

How do you get credit for 73 Conference Championships, 54 Final Fours, and 39 National Championships across every major athletic sport in America? Dr. Jerry Lynch, ex-Navy Officer, sports psychologist, author, speaker, athlete, and coach, has advised, guided, and coached some of the most successful, winningest, and dominant athletes in the world. You might've heard of a few of them...Steve Kerr, Phil Jackson, and Kobe Bryant. With a unique perspective that combines eastern philosophy, Native American Tradition, and Western Philosophy, Dr. J has written over thirteen books and given countless lectures to help people achieve their prime mentality to win. When I sat down with Dr. J, he dove into his latest book, “The Competitive Buddha,” a book about mastery, leadership, and spirituality, drawing from the ancient teachings of The Buddha and showing how many of those philosophies apply to winning. This is definitely one of the most unique podcasts I've ever had so...let's bring it in!

This book is meant to identify and take responsibility for what is going wrong so we can remedy the problems." Directly from the headlines: Even before its mandated closer due to the Covid-19 virus epidemic, after spending billions of dollars, the American education system was in crisis. Students were not being prepared for anything except more years without adequate benefit and were turning off. Teachers were quitting in droves, and taxpayers were losing faith in the schools they paid for with their taxes. And it's getting worse. This project is as explosive to the field of education as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was for agriculture and pesticides, or Ralph Nader's Unsafe at Any Speed was for auto safety. And like those books, A Teacher's Quest not only identifies problems but offers solutions.

This week is a one-of-a-kind episode in which I interview 10 people from my Master's of Education graduate school program. Each of us comes from different backgrounds into the same program. I thought it would be interesting to give you a glimpse of the immense sense of purpose each one is bringing into their teaching and education youth in urban, public charter schools in California. The cohort is as diverse as the students we serve and I am impressed with how passionate, caring, and conscientious each of my classmates is. In this interview I ask roughly four general questions answered over about five minutes. Those questions are: 1. Whats your name where and what you’ll be teaching 2. What is your purpose for doing this program? 3. What kind of teacher do you hope to become? 4. How will your background and story Come into your teaching? The model of this program is called a Teacher Residency. We spend a year in an accelerated Master's degree program through the Alder Graduate School of Education, while we co-teach alongside a Mentor Teacher at a school-site. I'm doing my program through KIPP Bay Area Schools- a free- public charter school network open to all students while others in the program are doing their teaching training through Aspire Public Schools and Caliber Schools - both also free, public charter schools.
