Real Travel Experts Ira & Helene Kaplan of Cruise Holidays of Marlboro join Ken to discuss Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines suite perks. Ira and Helene detail two programs that Ken likens to "ships within ships": The Retreat on Celebrity Cruises and The Haven on Norwegian. These two areas on most the Celebrity' and Norwegian ships are made available exclusively to suite guests. Perks include: private speciality restaurants, private courtyards, pools / sundecks, butlers, concierge service, priority boarding and reservations "A great value for cruisers accustomed to first class on airlines and five star hotels", say the Kaplans. Its also a great option for those looking for the luxury experience of a small ship but with the amenities and wide variety of entertainment found on a resort style ship. There's one movie theatre in the city of Val-d'Or, Quebec—a city of about 32,000, about a five-hour drive north of Ottawa. The Capitol Theatre opened in 1937 with more than 600 seats, an orchestra pit and a snack bar. Its founder, Abe Kaplan, was one of the pioneering Jewish residents who set up businesses in the region to capitalize on the burgeoning gold rush of the time. Kaplan and his wife raised two daughters and a son in an apartment right above the Capitol, and—despite being one of a handful of Jewish families in the mining town—managed to lead an observant Jewish life. Now, 85 years after the theatre first opened its doors—and a few decades since the Kaplans sold it in 1986—the city of Val-d'Or held a commemorative ceremony to honour the multicultural families that helped build it, including the Kaplans. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, the Kaplan kids will explain what the honour means to them, and why they wanted to make sure their family's contribution to Val-d'Or's history is not forgotten. What we talked about: Learn more about the history of Val d'Or Visit the "I grew up in Val d'Or" Facebook page Credits The CJN Daily is written and hosted by Ellin Bessner (@ebessner on Twitter). In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll explore some curiosities and unanswered questions from Greg's research, including a novelist's ashes, some bathing fairies, the mists of Dartmoor, and a ballooning leopard. We'll also revisit the Somerton man and puzzle over an armed traveler. Intro: Amanda McKittrick Ros is widely considered the worst novelist of all time. John Cummings swallowed 30 knives. Sources for our notes and queries: The Pony Express ad is quoted in Christopher Corbett's 2004 history Orphans Preferred: The Twisted Truth and Lasting Legend of the Pony Express. It appeared first in Missouri amateur historian Mabel Loving's posthumous 1961 history The Pony Express Rides On!, but she cites no source, and no one's been able to find the ad. The anecdote about John Gawsworth keeping M.P. Shiel's ashes in a biscuit tin appears in John Sutherland's 2011 book Lives of the Novelists. "The comedian and scholar of nineteenth-century decadent literature, Barry Humphries, was (unwillingly) one such diner -- 'out of mere politeness.'" Sutherland gives only this source, which says nothing about the ashes. (Thanks, Jaideep.) Henry Irving's observation about amateur actors and personal pronouns is mentioned in Robertson Davies' 1951 novel Tempest-Tost. Joseph Addison's definition of a pun appeared in the Spectator, May 10, 1711. Theodore Hook's best pun is given in William Shepard Walsh's Handy-Book of Literary Curiosities, 1892. Richard Sugg's anecdote of the Ilkley fairies appears in this 2018 Yorkshire Post article. The proof of the Pythagorean theorem by "Miss E. A. Coolidge, a blind girl" appears in Robert Kaplan and Ellen Kaplan's 2011 book Hidden Harmonies: The Lives and Times of the Pythagorean Theorem. They found it in Elisha Scott Loomis' 1940 book The Pythagorean Proposition, which cites the Journal of Education (Volume 28, 1888, page 17), which I haven't been able to get my hands on -- the Kaplans couldn't either, until they discovered it had been mis-shelved in the stacks of Harvard's Gutman Library. Neither Loomis nor the Kaplans gives the proof as it originally appeared, and neither gives Coolidge's age at the proof. The anecdote of the Dartmoor fog appears in William Crossing's 1888 book Amid Devonia's Alps. The Paris fogs of the 1780s are described in Louis-Sébastien Mercier's Tableau de Paris (Chapter CCCLXIV, 1:1014), a 12-volume topographic description of the city that appeared between 1782 and 1788, as quoted in Jeremy Popkin, ed., Panorama of Paris: Selections From Tableau de Paris, 2010. "I have known fogs so thick that you could not see the flame in their lamps," Mercier wrote, "so thick that coachmen have had to get down from their boxes and feel their way along the walls. Passers-by, unwilling and unwitting, collided in the tenebrous streets; and you marched in at your neighbour's door under the impression that it was your own." The anecdote about Charles Green and his ballooning companions appears in John Lucas' 1973 book The Big Umbrella. The best image I've been able to find of the Dobhar-chú, the "king otter" of Irish folklore, accompanies this 2018 article from the Leitrim Observer. Does a photo exist of Grace Connolly's entire headstone? According to WorldCat, G.V. Damiano's 1922 book Hadhuch-Anti Hell-War is held only by the New York Public Library System; by Trinity College Library in Hartford, Ct.; and by the Center for Research Libraries in Chicago. If it's available online, I haven't been able to find it. The incident of the dividing typewriters is mentioned in this article from the Vancouver Sun, and there's a bit more on this Australian typewriter blog. The anecdote about Enroughty being pronounced "Darby" appears in the designer's notes for the wargame The Seven Days, Volume III: Malvern Hill. This 1912 letter to the New York Times affirms the pronunciation, and this 1956 letter to American Heritage gives another explanation of its origin -- one of many. A few more confirming sources: Robert M. Rennick, "I Didn't Catch Your Name," Verbatim 29:2 (Summer 2004). Parke Rouse, "The South's Cloudy Vowels Yield to Bland Consonance," [Newport News, Va.] Daily Press, Feb. 23, 1989, A11. Earl B. McElfresh, "Make Straight His Path: Mapmaking in the Civil War," Civil War Times 46:4 (June 2007), 36-43, 5. But even if it's true, there's no consistent explanation as to how this state of affairs came about. How can you ace the GMAT, the EA or any test required at your dream school? [Show summary] Mike Diamond of Apex GMAT shares his advice for acing the GMAT, prepping for graduate program tests of all kinds, and why empathy is central to Apex’s approach to test-coaching. Mike Diamond, Director of Curriculum Development at Apex GMAT talks test prep [Show notes] How can you ace the GMAT, the EA, or any tests that may be required at the school you have your heart set on? Today’s guest has your answer. Mike Diamond is Director of Curriculum Development at Apex GMAT, and also its Co-Founder. Mike earned his bachelor's at Brandeis in 2000 and has worked in finance, strategy advising, and political consulting. However, his passion is the GMAT. How did you get involved in the test prep business? [1:55] Entirely by accident. My passion is teaching and helping people, and I've always pursued that in all the various places that I've been in my career, and even going back to being a student. And like many, I was sort of the go-to guy for friends and family members, as a resource for people I knew, without paying attention to it as a potential career choice. I had spent some time working in a hedge fund, and then I was in the world of political consulting as you had mentioned. I loved it. I was helping people. I was doing really interesting work. But frankly, I was getting a little jaded, and this is well over a decade ago, and I know a lot more people are jaded these days. I was getting a little jaded, and I was having a burrito with my best friend's cousin. We're sitting in the Qdoba, and she's brilliant. She's actually an instructor at Manhattan Prep and she says to me, "Hey, I'm super passionate about Teach For America. I love teaching fourth grade science in North Philly, but I pay my mortgage teaching the GMAT." I said, "Oh really?" At the time, I only thought there were the bigger shops, the Kaplans and Princeton Reviews. And frankly, as an educator, and I certainly consider myself an educator, those never held much appeal for me as a place of employment. I said, "Oh wow, that's really fascinating." I had always had a proclivity towards psychometric standardized testing. So about four days later, I went in, I did the GMAT, and then I began taking meetings with various GMAT firms. I was disappointed in what I saw, and there's plenty of great firms and great tutors out there. But once a GMAT business gets beyond a small scale, personalized attention really isn't a priority, and everything defaults to curriculum and having very bright instructors go through a prescriptive method for learning how to excel. There's two problems with that. One is that it only gets a candidate so far, and the other is that it's very one-size-fits-all, and yet one size does not fit all. Very quickly, everything else went into the rear view mirror. I began Apex with some like-minded instructors, and the rest, as they say, is history. hbspt.cta.load(58291, 'b6c9f876-0125-49b0-b2cf-3c5c8301554f', {}); What is Apex GMAT Prep? [4:54] Apex is dedicated to helping people become better thinkers and better learners. We really consider the GMAT and the results that you get from becoming a better thinker as a result of that deeper process, permit you to be a more creative problem-solver, a more critical thinker in your profession, in your MBA, EMBA, or other graduate school program, and in your life and your relationships. There are a core suite of thinking skills that are not taught academically, that come through experience, but also come through having a particularly great teacher or particularly great circumstances with respect to family or mentors on how to approach the attitudinal adjustments one needs to make the emotional and psychological adjustments that one has to make to even approach intractable problems. Most of this is what we focus on. It's not tips, it's not tricks, it's not heuristics.

For 20 years, parapsychologist Stephen Kaplan and his wife, Roxanne, investigated the phenomenon keeping a detailed diary of everything that happened. This book is the result of that diary. Follow step-by-step and day-by-day as the Kaplans locate witnesses battle rival ghostbusters track down leads and attend an unlikely Halloween party at the Horror House. the result of all this effort? The Kaplans exposed a hoax that was almost as unnerving as the haunting itself. A real page-turner for anyone who is fascinated by things that go bump in the night!

Who is Jillian Kaplan? Jillian Kaplan is a trauma survivor, animal advocate, rainbow baby mama, former binge eater turned health and fitness coach. Jillian was hit by a car crossing a crosswalk and had emergency brain surgery to save her life. She also had a shattered pelvis, face, sacrum, and septum. She spent 3 months in a wheelchair unable to walk or stand but has now fully recovered, lives pain free, and is the mom to a healthy baby girl born in September 2017, 13 months after the traumatic injury. Jillian has worked in corporate doing product management and marketing and is pursuing her passion around health as a coach for Beach Body which is part of her online health and fitness coaching business. She has a B.S. in Management and an MBA from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and lives with her amazing husband and daughter outside of Boston, Mass. Show Highlights Jillian talks about growing up in a healthy household and how she chose not to listen and ended up binge eating, addicted to diet pills, and struggling with her weight. Four years ago, Jillian made the choice to be healthy and strong which ended up saving her life. Jillian wants to share the message that you are beautiful the way you are, and that health is a lifestyle. Jillian talks about walking her puppy and getting hit by a car in September 2016 where the doctors weren’t sure if she would survive let alone walk again. She woke up after the accident and chose to let it be part of her story and to not define her. She has decided to make a ‘message’ out of the ‘mess.’ Jillian talks about the group Safe Roads Alliance that she works with in Massachusetts. She spoke at an event where she was the only living survivor of an accident like the one she was in. Jillian talks about how being in good shape helped her body deal with the trauma she endured. She had two surgeries within two days of each other which were traumatic in and of themselves. She was not only physically fit but mentally fit which came from making the decision to become healthier and changing her habits. Jillian’s husband was notified because of the number on her dog’s tag. She wasn’t carrying an ID and now she is an advocate for always carrying some form of ID. Jillian talks about how rehab was so mentally challenging since she was very young compared to the other people there and that she had no one to talk to. She was alone a lot and was unable to get out of bed on her own. She stayed sane by being active on social media and sharing her story. Jillian’s husband was incredibly supportive throughout this entire process. Jillian avoids the crosswalk where the accident occurred but did go there on the one-year anniversary of her accident. She is cautious now when she is out walking. Terri talks about the conversations she has with her children about being aware of drivers who are generally distracted and to remain vigilant when riding their bikes or walking out on the streets. Jillian talks about how she had a miscarriage, was experiencing infertility and was scheduled to meet with specialists but then had the accident. She was fortunate to have a young, female surgeon who was sensitive to the fact that Jillian was a young woman when fixing her after the accident. Jillian talks about how surprised she was to find out she was five months pregnant when she went in for a medical appointment and ended up delivering a healthy baby girl in the fall of 2017, thirteen months after her accident. Jillian talks about being a Beach Body coach before and after the accident. She appreciates the physical and mental strength that she has gained from the program. She feels an obligation to pay it forward at this point for people who feel defeated or stuck. Jillian likes to share the things she loves like Ipsy and Artic Zero ice cream and she pays for her products. Terri talks about how she hopes that Jillian ends up benefitting financially from promoting and supporting the products with her audience. If Jillian had a magic wand, she would change the way people communicate. She thinks that a lot of the world’s problems could be solved if we just talked to each other (and not through text or email). Brian Alvey introduced Terri to Jillian and they met through the adoption of their dog. Jillian talks about how she works with dog rescue organizations on fundraising. While she wasn’t raised with dogs, she ended up with a dog after a breakup and then wanted to foster dogs and ultimately providing support for dog rescues. Terri’s Key Takeaway Carry some sort of ID when out and about in the event of an accident or emergency. You never know who might need to reach someone on your behalf. Today's Guest: Terri Libenson, cartoonist, "The Pajama Diaries" Terri Libenson is creator of "The Pajama Diaries" daily comic strip My mother’s maiden name was Kaplan. My favorite person in the whole world—after mom, of course—was my grandfather, Sam Kaplan. I even convinced my wife to give my son “Kaplan” as his middle name. So I must admit a touch of prejudice in reading cartoonist Terri Libenson’s daily strip, “The Pajama Diaries.” How could I resist the story of a family of Kaplans as told by someone who grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania? That’s where my Kaplans are from, too. All that, and the fact that “The Pajama Diaries” makes me laugh. Order by clicking the book cover above TERRI LIBENSON podcast excerpt: "I've always drawn and I gravitated toward cartooning at a very young age. What inspired me was 'Peanuts'; I used to draw Snoopy and Woodstock all the time. My brother also had a lot of MAD magazines and I used to read those over and over again." Before launching “The Pajama Diaries” in 2002, Terri was a writer and illustrator for American Greetings. She also did another strip for two years, “Got a Life.” This summer, Terri is taking the Kaplan family back to a time before Jill and Rob had kids. It’s a chance to fill in parts of the strip’s back story and probably give the artist a change of pace. Autor: Andreas Zemke Redaktion: Diana Redlich

*Learning how to really slow down and reclaim the lost art of down time is not just something you do for fun and enjoyment, but something that actually greatly affects the state of your health.* Yes, taking time to socialize or to take an after-dinner stroll, making your easy workouts easier, and integrating temperature therapy and foam rolling are all effective activities to boost *Assignments:* *1. Recovery-based training* utilizes a different philosophy than ‘consistent’ miles or appearances at the gym. Use intuition and push when you are pumped, and back off when flat. Leave some juice in your tank at all times! Check out my show with Craig Marker ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2018/12/07/peakperformance/ ) to learn about HIIT vs HIRT and why going less hard = less cell destruction. Remember that muscle soreness is NOT a catalyst for growth. Protein synthesis goes to REPAIR instead of growth, so there is really no need to get sore. * *Take easier, easy days* (like doing a positive deadlift on grass or some dynamic stretches). * *Increase daily movement as a form of recovery.* JFW to increase blood circulation and lymphatic function. * *Introduce Rebound workouts.* Validated by HRV to speed recovery, this includes: dynamic stretching, mobility/flexibility drills, foam rolling, and deep breathing exercises that boost blood circulation and oxygen delivery without stressing the body. *2. Brain down time from hyperconnectivity* * A meditation practice is ideal, or even exercising without a podcast or music! * Set up a morning routine that you can stick to. 84% of people reach for the phone most mornings. Instead, walk the dog, gratitude journal, or do elaborate flexibility/mobility stretches or yoga. * Set aside time for Deep Work periods where you disconnect. (Listen to my Breather show ( https://www.bradkearns.com/2020/06/05/insights-from-the-book-deep-work-by-cal-newport-part-1/ ) on Cal Newport). The brain gets more tired managing text and email all day! So focus, get it done, and flip the lid closed! *3. Spend Time in Nature* * University of Michigan professors, the Kaplans, promote their ‘attention restoration theory’ as a way of recovering from what they call “directed attention fatigue” of non-stop information bombardment of modern times promoting sympathetic dominance and eventually, crankiness and irritableness. Nature allows passive engagement of the senses (take it in), triggers a drop in cortisol, BP and HR. Neuroscience professor Michael Merzenich explains that, “Our attraction to the ocean may derive from its lack of physical markers…. Looking over a calm sea is akin to closing our eyes.” Kaplan’s call for engaging with nature fascination is that, the more grand and spectacular the setting, the greater the fascination. Think: Yosemite, Niagara falls, The Grand Canyon, sailing in the ocean, or simply swimming in Tahoe. Any kind of nature is great; even imagery has been to have effect. Invest in a mini fountain, or get a poster/change your screensaver to a nature based image you’re drawn to. *4. Napping* * A 20 minute nap refreshes sodium and potassium pumps in your brain neurons, allowing you to go from literally feeling fried (because the electrical circuitry is depleted) to re-energized. I’m pro napper through training. I turn on App Rainmaker Pro and I’m gone. I find a quiet or sunny spot, disengage; it’s a ritual. Many say they ‘can’t nap’ but that’s likely because of the environment. Dr. David Dinges, a sleep expert at University of Pennsylvania Medical School whose laboratory studies how sleep affects neurobehavioral, cognitive, immune, inflammatory, endocrine, metabolic, and genetic function, estimates that 15-20 percent of the population are highly sensitive, calling them “closet nappers.” Dr. Sara Mednick, a Harvard-trained psychologist currently studying sleep at UC Riverside, and author of Take A Nap, Change Your Life , estimates that up to 50% of the population is genetically predisposed to napping. If you struggle with napping, go easy on yourself: to start, at first, just disengage, go quiet (even to your car or park bench) and rest your head (the key element of a proper nap), even if you don’t fall asleep. *5. Frequent tech breaks.* This is key as we are only capable of peak focus for a cognitive task for 20 minutes. * Take a 1-2 min break every 20 minutes. * 5 minute movements every hour. I’ve been doing 30 push ups, 10 pullups, 20 and squats since Covid and am in the best shape ever! * Do whatever you can to engage the brain differently. Maybe that’s wastebasket hoops, indoor putts, using an outside slackline, chipshot, or other micro-workouts. * Take one major mid-day break. * Wind down away from the screen in the evenings. *6. Mindfulness practices:* consider taking formal classes to learn Tai chi, yoga, and meditation (you can also use apps). Write down lists of what you’re grateful for and appreciate in your life in a journal. *7. Temperature therapy:* Saunas promote instant relaxation while a cold plunge gives a rebound response. Contrast therapy is also awesome. Mark Sisson goes in the sauna for 10 minutes, then goes 5-7 in the cold, then 5 minutes in the spa. I go back and forth in the winter between my mom’s pool (54F!) and the sauna (104F!), and always end up feeling completely relaxed. *TIMESTAMPS:* MOFO mission number nine is slow down and reclaim the lost art of down time. [01:58] Focus your training around recovery rather than recovery as an afterthought. [02:47] Pay attention to your intuition. [03:22] You should not be sore after workouts. [06:09] Take an easy day. Remember to think of your MAF heart rate. [07:47] Even walking, you will increase your blood circulation and boost your lymphatic function. [09:56] The effectiveness of rebound workouts to actually to speed recovery in comparison to total rest has been validated. [12:13] Your rest and downtime includes teaching your brain to be quiet. [15:01] Develop a winning morning routine. Organize your day. [15:54] Spend time in nature. [18:50] Don’t underestimate the importance of napping. [22:08] Be kind to your eyes.
