The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (04/12/2024): 3:05pm- Charlie Savage and Luke Broadwater report that on Friday, the House of Representatives “passed a two-year reauthorization of an expiring warrantless surveillance law that had stalled this week amid G.O.P. resistance—but only after narrowly rejecting a bipartisan effort to restrict searches of Americans' messages swept up by the program. The bill would extend a provision of law known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, that is set to lapse next Friday…Grasping to salvage the measure before the law expires, Speaker Mike Johnson put forward a shorter extension than its originally envisioned five years, persuading hard-right Republicans who had blocked the bill to allow it to move forward. The final vote was 273 to 147, with both parties split. One hundred and twenty-six Republicans joined 147 Democrats in favor, while 88 Republicans and 59 Democrats were opposed. The legislation still must be cleared by the Senate and signed by President Biden. A good deed done by the staff of Tumbleson Automotive has gone viral. Late Thursday evening, a good Samaritan posted on social media about how a group of seniors on a planned trip to Hawaii had been stranded at the Quad Cities Airport. It appears that their connecting flight to O'Hare Airport in Chicago had been grounded due to heavy fog. The Facebook poster asked if there was anyone who had a bus who might be able to help these people out. If they didn't make their morning flight in Chicago, each of them were out $6000 dollars. Seeing the post, a member of the staff at Tumbleson Automotivie called their boss, Mike Tumbleson and the team sprung into action. Digging one of their buses from their party bus fleet out of the snow, and grabbing a second bus for the overflowing amount of luggage involved, they went to the QC Airport, grabbed the group of seniors and made the trip to Chicago in time for the connecting flight. By the time Mike joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on Friday morning, the group of seniors was in the air, on their way to Hawaii with memories they will never forget about a group of Kewanee folks who pitched in in a moment of need. We call that The Good News.

UPDATE: Trump Indicted on 34 Charges, Here's What They Mean | Facts Matter

Facts Matter

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 1, 2023 9:00

Late Thursday night, the 45th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, was officially indicted by a Manhattan grand jury. This makes Trump the first president to be impeached twice, the first president to be raided by the FBI, the first president to be wiretapped before taking office, the first president to be banned from social media, and now, the first president to face criminal charges. In terms of what the specific charges are, the specifics have yet to be made public at the moment. The felony indictment will remain under seal until at least Tuesday, when Trump is set to be arraigned—which will include fingerprinting him and taking his mugshot. However, what we do know is that the felony indictment includes 34 counts of falsifying business records—most likely having to do with the hush money payments that Trump's lawyer made in 2016. This indictment presents both positives and negatives for Trump. On the negative side, this is happening in Manhattan—meaning that if this case goes to trial, he will have to face a jury pool selected from people in Manhattan, who voted 86 percent in favor of Joe Biden. In 2020, Trump only received 12 percent of the vote there. And so, whether an impartial jury is able to be formed is a real question. The positive for Trump is that this trial might not even make it to the point of selecting a jury—the indictment might just be thrown out by the judge. And the reason why it might be thrown out is severalfold. ⭕️ Sign up for our NEWSLETTER and stay in touch

The House approved the measure on Nov. 30, and it now heads to President Biden's desk for signature.A few hours prior to the Senate's vote, Feedstuffs spoke with Max Fisher, chief economist at the National Grain and Feed Association, about what the possibility of a strike meant for the feed industry and the broader agriculture industry. He explained the situation, how the parties arrived at a place requiring the federal government to get involved, and the long-term prospectus for labor relations in the rail space.More broadly, Fisher discussed the current state of the commodity logistics chain, from challenges facing our inland waterways, a lingering lack of truck drivers, and now the vulnerabilities facing the rail system.A few hours after our conversation with Fisher, the Senate approved a measure to implement a tentative agreement to avert the strike, which NFGA, the American Feed Industry Association, the Soy Transportation Coalition, and other relevant industry groups hailed as an important step in averting a national crisis. This episode is sponsored by United Animal Health, a leader in animal health and nutrition. The U.S. and South Korea jointly warned North Korea on Thursday that use of any kind of nuclear weapon against Seoul or other regional allies would result in the end of Kim Jong Un's regime, as Pyongyang continued to rattle the peninsula with escalating missile tests. North Korea has launched more than two dozen missiles over the last two days in response to U.S.-South Korean military exercises that began Monday. The launches have sent South Koreans scrambling for shelter and further frayed the nerves of a population already mourning the loss of more than 150 people at a horrific Halloween crowd crush. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup, after meeting Thursday at the Pentagon, released a joint statement saying they “strongly condemned” North Korea's escalating military flexing, including ballistic missile test launches, multiple rocket launches and coastal artillery. In response to the launches, the U.S. extended the “Vigilant Storm” military exercise, which was scheduled to run through Friday, Nov. 4. It was no different this year as the nation's highest court released decisions on cases involving abortion and gun rights. Late Thursday the Senate passed a bipartisan gun bill with the House passing its version Friday. The landmark compromise now goes to President Biden for his signature. That news came as more details from a deadly school shooting in Texas came to light. The House committee investigating the riots of Jan. 6, 2021, continued this past week and focused on pressure placed on the Justice Department. In related news, a former lawmaker was sentenced to prison for his role in the riot. Yellowstone National Park reopened this week and a brand of e-cigarettes was banned by the FDA. Gas prices and the economy remain a concern for many Americans. President Biden called on Congress to suspend the federal gas tax while mortgage rates continue to increase as home sales slow. This version of what’s happened and what’s scheduled comes to you with support from the Charlottesville Podcasting Network. Bringing you sounds of the community since 2005, and hoping to bring more voices forward in the next 15 years. Visit cvillepodcast.com. ***The Virginia Department of Health has reported another 2,015 new cases of COVID-19 this morning. That’s the highest one-day total since the pandemic began but VDH officials said this is the result of a technical error. “This figure includes information that should have been reported on Wednesday and Thursday of this week as well as the regular numbers for Friday,” VDH communications director Maria Reppas wrote in a release. “Late Thursday, VDH’s Office of Information Management, which helps manage VDH’s COVID-19 databases, identified and rectified the technical issue, which was a system performance configuration.”There are another 18 deaths statewide for a total of 2,317 to date. The seven day average for positive PCR tests remains at 7.3 percent for a second straight day. The Thomas Jefferson Health District reports another 49 cases today for a total of 1,894 cases to date. That consists of 19 from Albemarle, 15 from Charlottesville, five from Fluvanna, seven from Louisa, and three from Nelson. No new deaths are reported today. The seven-day average for positive tests is at 5.6 percent today.***The Albemarle Board of Supervisors has voted unanimously to remove Confederate monuments and markers from the county courthouse grounds. The county will take proposals from groups who want to take possession of the statue, cannon and stack of cannonballs. Ten people asked for the items to be removed at a public hearing. Alex Taurel with the League of Conservation Voters called them monuments to racism. “The League of Conservation Voters works to protect public lands and parks and make nature accessible for more people in this country, but recent events have highlighted that while parks and public spaces may be accessible for many folks, it doesn’t mean those spaces are safe and inclusive for all,” Taurel said. The removal was supported by several groups, such as the Charlottesville-Albemarle BAR Association. The General Assembly passed legislation this year allowing localities to remove or contextualize war memorials, paving the way for Confederate statues to be removed across Virginia. Albemarle Resident Ramona Martinez thanked the county for moving fast. “Removing these statues is not removing history or Southern culture,” Martinez said. “It is an acknowledgment that one group of people does not have claim on land that was never theirs to begin with.” Supervisor Diantha McKeel voted to remove the statue.“The at-ready Confederate statue symbolizing the effort to maintain a plantation society, slavery, white supremacy, and the tools of a war fought against the United States should not be co-located with our court facilities,” McKeel said.McKeel said that after the materials are removed, the community must still work to combat system racism. Supervisor Ned Gallaway said that many people who wrote him to support keeping the statues accused him of being “politically correct.” However, he said the ability of Albemarle to remove the statue came because people voted and the make-up of the General Assembly changed to one that no longer wanted to defend the statues as war memorials. “That is something that I see as not politically correct, but democracy in action and the way it’s supposed to work. If you want change, you go to the ballot box, you vote, and you put the folks in who are going to make the changes,” Gallaway said. Proposals for museums and historical organizations to assume possession of the materials will be accepted through September 5. The county also announced the hiring of Fentress Architects to design the $45.2 million expansion and consolidation of the city and county’s General District courts in Court Square. That construction is expected to get underway in the spring of 2022. ***The city of Charlottesville is seeking proposals for honorary names for city streets. According to a release, there is a deadline of August 31 to submit applications to honor a roadway after an individual, an organization or entity, or an “event of local significance to Charlottesville.” “The City Council believes honorary street names further the City’s commitment to create ‘a community of mutual respect’ especially when they recognize the important contributions of African-American community members both past and present in the development of the City of Charlottesville,” reads the release.Several proposals have been made this summer to honor the Black Lives Matter movement with a street designation. City Council discussed the matter at its meeting Monday night.“It’s looking like we might want to get a little bit more input since we are getting so many street naming requests at this time to do this correctly and to do this with the most transparency,” said Vice Mayor Sena Magill. Eleven streets have been given an honorary designation since 2011. A committee will sift through potential additions and make recommendations to Council at its meeting on October 19.***Today is the first day that a new intrastate bus route will come through Charlottesville on its way between Danville and D.C. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Department is funding the daily service which is called the Piedmont Express. The service follows what the DRPT considers a successful launch of the Virginia Breeze, a route between Blacksburg and DC which is now being called the Valley Flyer. The Piedmont Express will also stop in Altavista, Lynchburg, Amherst, Culpeper, Warrenton, Gainesville, and Dulles Airport. (Virginia Breeze website)Long lines for library curbside pick-ups may soon abate. The Jefferson Madison Regional Library will extend hours for the service to serve more patrons. Monday: 1pm-7pm at all branch locationsTuesday-Saturday: 10am-4pm at Central Library, Crozet Library, Gordon Avenue Library, Northside Library, Nelson Memorial and Louisa CountyTuesday-Saturday: 10am-2pm at Scottsville Library and Greene County LibrarySunday: All branch locations closed“Library staff are working very hard to provide curbside and drive-up service, and are thrilled to be able to expand that service,” said JMRL Director David Plunkett in a release. “All returned items are quarantined for 72 hours before being put back into circulation, for the safety of staff and the public.”***A group called Come As You Are Cville will hold a clothes drive Saturday at Forest Hills Park. Anything collected will be donated to homeless members of the community. The event will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (info on Facebook)***There are no government meetings that I know about today, but please let me know if I’m incorrect. I can report that the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission meeting last night did not meet due to a lack of a quorum. Many parts of the region were hit by a massive storm earlier in the evening. The meeting will be rescheduled for later this month. This is a public episode. Today's word of the day is 'rivalry' as in what Jim Harbaugh and Michigan mean to Ryan Day and Ohio State. The two coaches had a conference call and Harbaugh actually used his time to snitch on Ohio State! I could not believe what I heard from Harbaugh. Let's talk about rivalries in sports and where one rival will go to get at the other (0:06). So You Wanna Talk To Samson!? The SEC is doing everything they can to play football this fall. Today the conference released health protocols. Well, on Thursday the Big Sky cancelled the fall season. So someone asked me what the heck is going on in college football (11:20). Review - What Happened, Nina Simone (20:30)? On Thursday I said Texas Tech had no choice but to fire women's basketball coach Marlene Stollings. Late Thursday they did...good (26:20). Let's talk a little about the Miami Marlins. The biggest story in MLB. Can they be the great underdog story and make a run to the postseason (27:30)? LeBron James has some interesting quotes about the Lakers struggles inside the bubble. They have not been a great team so far. Let's talk about that quote and how strange it was to hear this (30:00). I need to make a correction from a past show. I said Shohei Ohtani was the highest paid Japanese player of all time... that wasn't even close to being true (37:30). Oakland Athletics bench coach Ryan Christenson and the team had to issue an apology after Thursday's game because he celebrated by doing a Nazi salute. Is this what he meant to do? Probably not. Was he wrong for this? Definitely. As you’ve most certainly heard by now, my wife, who is a complete Rockstar at her job, is coming back from China today. In fact, she’ll probably be walking in on the recording of the end of this episode. So another week, I’ve survived the challenges and championships of being a parent. Today, I chaperoned my daughter Lucy’s second-grade field trip to one of the history places in St. Paul. My wife does most of this stuff, since a lot of the times, I’m at a tournament or something. Today was great to see my daughter interact with her friends. She’s been through a lot already, but just one of those days where my own survival instincts and being overwhelmed by the sheer volume of fruit snacks and chattering seven-year-olds were in a cohesive balance. I’m Jason Bryant, this is Short Time Shots, a look at the scores and more from around the world of wrestling. Dual Meets: Limited night again with ranked Division I teams in action, we kick things off as No. 5 Nebraska got into the groove early, hosting a trio of non-Division I opponents in Lincoln. The Huskers only wrestled twice, beating a pair of Division II squads - Nebraska-Kearney 47-0 and Chadron State 37-3. Other outcomes saw Nebraska-Kearney blank NAIA Hastings 54-0 and Chadron State beat Hastings 45-3. Out in New York, No. 7 Wisconsin beat host Buffalo 33-3 at Mayhem on the Mainstage, another presentation of collegiate wrestling in a theater setting. Depending on what rankings you look at, there weren’t many ranked matchups here. Seth Gross beat Derek Spann 7-2 at 133 for the Badgers, while two-time All-American Evan Wick beat Troy Keller at 165. Loras, the top-ranked team in Division III, opened up its dual meet season with a 51-6 win over American Rivers Conference rival Buena Vista on Thursday. All nine wins from the Duhawks were bonus victories, including six falls. Keeping it D3, Wisconsin-Whitewater topped Wisconsin-Oshkosh 26-18. Mike and Devin Totorice were impressive for the Warhawks as Mike picked up a tech fall at 125 and Devin a major decision at 149. In the NAIA, the coaching debut of Steve Komac was a successful one as No. 16 Providence (Mont.) knocked off rival and No. 17 Montana State-Northern 25-22. Warner Pacific picked up a fall from heavyweight Cortez Rodelo in nine seconds to lift the Knights, spoiling the first dual in school history for host Corban University. Benedictine (Kan.) and Waldorf wrestled to a 5-5 split, but two forfeits were the difference as Benedictine, they’re the Ravens, nevermore, beat Waldorf 21-18. Now a run of mixed-divisional results, first in Ohio where former InterMat results maven Dan Ransick continues to be boiling mad, Division II Ashland topped NAIA Lourdes 29-12, with 2018 Division II champion Bret Romanzak picking up a 6-0 win at 174 pounds. In the Upper Midwest, Division II Northern State spanked Division III John’s – the one in Minnesota - 42-3. St. John’s Jacob Scherber won the bout’s first match at 174 pounds, but the next nine went the way of the Wolves. In keeping with the D2 over D3 theme, Mary defeated Concordia-Moorhead 28-6. The Marauders, yes, a name they share in wrestling with Millersville, put nearly 1,000 people in the stands on a Wednesday night where the November temperature is a paltry 19 degrees. Division III Central College shut out NAIA William Penn 52-0 in a matchup between a pair of Iowa schools. Daniel Radcliffe, no, not THAT Daniel Radcliffe, started a parade of pins from 141 to 165 and the DUTCH cruised. NJCAA Jamestown (N.Y.) beat Division III Pitt-Bradford, but we have to let them know their scored the dual wrong – you do NOT receive points for a double forfeit. It’s 0-0, not 6-6. Learned that in high school. Remember it well. I think the referee that dual was a guy named Jim Hedrick. Another junior college picking up a win was Labette topping Oklahoma Wesleyan of the NAIA 37-5. Out in California, two scores to report: Top-ranked Fresno City beat Chabot 45-6, while second-ranked Cerritos cruised past Rio Hondo 33-8. It’s almost midnight as I record this in Minnesota, so that’s my cut off for now. It’s like opening up the baseball page in the old newspaper, when you actually read a newspaper, and seeing “Late Thursday.” Well, yeah. The biggest dual of the night is No. 17 North Carolina heading to Ann Arbor to face No. 19 Michigan. Neither team will be at full strength on paper, but it’s November. FROM THE DWN: Jaydin Eierman will be a Hawkeye. It’s all over the internet, so here’s a story about it from Flowrestling, one from com and why not, a link to Eierman’s Instagram. com’s Potentially Dangerous returns with a lot of takes on the happenings around Iowa wrestling, from the major college teams to the opens this weekend and some high school happenings, as well. IAwrestle also reported another Hawkeye commitment, as Caleb Rathjen also committed to Iowa on Thursday. In a bizarre story, the AP reported on the strange case of Alexis Vila, a 1993 freestyle world champion and 1996 Olympic bronze medalist, and his role in the plot to kill a South Florida interior designer. Vila later fought in various MMA promotions. You also might remember Vila ran his car into the terminal at the Fort Lauderdale airport in 2004. West Virginia’s Matthew Schmitt announced he will be taking the year off with an Olympic redshirt to train in Greco-Roman. Lehigh announced its December 6 dual with Penn State at Stabler Arena is now sold out. Speaking of tickets, Rutgers announced its season ticket number has exceeded 3,000. That’s pretty freaking good. The Predicament continues with its Senior Spotlight series. On Thursday, Central Lyon’s Jarrett Meyer, gets the look. Transition Wrestling gives us a look at the weekend action in women’s college wrestling coming up. The Open Mat’s Earl Smith gives us a tour of The Citadel on the most recent TOM Campus Visit feature. Earl was down there last week covering The Battle at The Citadel. The Tulsa World features former Oklahoma State Cowboy Kyle Crutchmer as he makes his MMA debut with Bellator on Friday in Thackerville, Oklahoma. While I said I wouldn’t link up things behind paywalls, I’ll make an exception if you have a subscription to high profile sports website, The Athletic. Today, Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto’s wrestling background is prominently featured. Realmuto is the nephew of the famous Smith brothers from Oklahoma. Yes, THOSE Smith brothers. Olaf alum Alex Morf pens a heartfelt and direct letter to the administration at the school in the Manitou Messenger, the school’s student newspaper. He starts off quoting John Irving. Even poor leaders like David Anderson might know who he is. On the Network Rob Waltko and Tristan Warner entertain you with a PA-centered recap of the weekend’s action on the PA Power Wrestling College Podcast. They’re joined by Clarion’s Brock Zacherl. If you’re not familiar with that show, all three of the show’s hosts, which include Mason Beckman as well, wrestled Division I and grew up in PA. It’s one of my favorite shows on the network.
