Bred A Blue: Episode 23. Jake Bidwell

The Official Everton Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 24, 2023 24:58

Our latest Bred a Blue podcast guest, Jake Bidwell, is still the youngest player to ever make a European appearance for Everton. David Moyes handed him a start against BATE Borisov in the UEFA Cup tie at Goodison Park in December 2009 when Bidwell was just 16-years-old and 271 days. Indeed, only Thierry Small, Jose Baxter and - by just 24 hours - James Vaughan have been younger when playing for the senior team in any competition. “I went in the day before the game expecting to train as normal and then got the shout that I was playing,” he told the Official Everton Podcast. “It was a bit of a whirlwind, but I remember going through set-pieces in training. “Leighton Baines and Tony Hibbert told me to just relax and enjoy my game. I was so young that I didn't really understand the magnitude of it and I just wanted to get out there and do the best I could.” LISTEN TO BRED A BLUE AND COLLECT EVERTON REWARDS POINTS In Bred a Blue Bidwell speaks about he started off at Everton as a goalkeeper, how he played against Danny Welbeck when he was still at school, and how he just wanted to go home to bed after his first senior team training session because he was so tired! After that European night, further senior run-outs proved elusive and, by his own admission, he was never really likely to oust Leighton Baines and so took the decision to go to Brentford on loan when he was 18. “It would have been difficult for anyone to get Bainesy out, let alone me,” said Bidwell. “I agreed to go to Brentford and then I asked ‘where is it' because I had no idea! I went for six months and ended up playing more than 200 games for them in five years. “There was no role for me at Everton but I had become an important player for Brentford and was playing week-in, week-out so I didn't want to go back to play reserve team football.” From Brentford, Bidwell moved to Queens Park Rangers, although despite racking up more than 100 appearances for them across three seasons he says ‘that one didn't work out as well.' His next port of call, Swansea City, was far more enjoyable. “I loved it there and can't speak highly enough of the place or the city. It's a one-club city and everyone wants the team to do well. We had two play-off campaigns but just couldn't get over the line.” Despite not turning 30 until March of this year, Jake Bidwell, currently in the Championship with Coventry City, is closing in on 500 career appearances. However, he still looks back on that one for Everton with a great deal of affection. “The upbringing I got alongside the likes of Phil Neville, Sylvain Distin, Leighton Baines has stood me in good stead throughout my career.  I only played once but I know there are lots of Evertonians who would give their left arm to make an appearance for the team. “It's something I'll always be proud of. If I have a son who is good enough to play football I wouldn't want him to go anywhere other than Everton.”

It's always one of the most exciting days in the football calendar and the latest Official Everton Podcast looks back over some special memories from the third round of the FA Cup. Which Merseyside football legend scored the only ever ‘golden goal', which tie was our first ever appearance on Match of the Day, which one was delayed when a chip shop by Goodison caught fire, why did we play 12 cup-ties in 14 games in 1987/88, why was the 1999 tie against Exeter City played in December and what Everton FA Cup record does Leighton Baines hold - even though he tells us that he didn't know it! Everton legend Kevin Ratcliffe tells us what David Moyes said to him after THAT game at Shrewsbury in 2003, John Connolly speaks about the horror tackle that broke his leg in the 1975 tie against non-league Altrincham and we catch up with former schoolteacher Phil Smith, who played centre-forward for the Northern Premier League outfit when they took the Blues to a replay. And Ian Snodin insists that he's still peeved that his team-mates didn't celebrate his goal at Sheffield Wednesday in 1988, although it was the fifth of a 5-0 victory! Host Darren Griffiths is joined by Dave Prentice and Gavin Buckland for a light-hearted stroll down FA Cup third round memory lane.

Dave Prentice and Gavin Buckland join Sam Carroll for your Friday edition of the Royal Blue podcast to look ahead to Sunday's visit of West Ham United to L4. The match will mark the return of David Moyes, along with Kurt Zouma and Nikola Vlasic, to Everton. It's now more than nine years since Moyes left the Blues for Manchester United. His derisory bids for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines after he moved to United soured his relationship with Evertonians. But, with time proving just what a good job he did at Goodison Park, has that frostiness cooled? Equally, are Blues taking Rafa Benitez, who used to go up against Moyes when he was in charge of Liverpool, closer to their hearts? Both questions are discussed by Sam, Gav and Prenno, who held an exclusive interview with Benitez for the Liverpool ECHO this week, which you can read by clicking the links below. And with Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin still sidelined, the panel also ask whether Sunday is the perfect time for Salomon Rondon to kick start his Everton career. The reds, Phil Roberts & Gary Murray, then look at the first of their final two pre season games where they drew 1-1 at Anfield with Athletic Bilbao. Phil Kirkbride is joined by Dave Prentice, Sam Carroll and Gavin Buckland for the latest edition of the Royal Blue podcast, which starts with a look back on the opening pre-season friendly at Blackpool. Do you take Everton's performance with a pinch of salt or do you attribute something more concerning to it? And what should we make of Gylfi Sigurdsson's comments after the match about the position he has operated in under Carlo Ancelotti? Our panel answer those questions and then get stuck into the subject on most Blues fans' lips at the moment - Real Madrid midfielder James Rodiriguez. Should Everton move heaven and earth to get a player Ancelotti clearly wants? And, if they do, which players do they ship out? Especially seeing as the Blues also remain in talks to sign Allan and Abdoulaye Doucouré. Midfield is clearly an area of the field Ancelotti wants to improve, and no doubt the Italian would have liked to have worked with Gareth Barry in his prime. The former Goodison favourite has announced his retirement from football, leading our panel to offer warm tributes to arguably one of the best transfers the club has made in recent years. There's also time to talk what role Everton have in store for Leighton Baines, now that he has also hung up his boots, as well as the new third kit and the latest on the move to Bramley-Moore Dock. Enjoy.

Everton were finally dealt a slice of good news on Wednesday as Leighton Baines was offered a new one-year contract at Goodison Park. The iconic defender has been brilliant when stepping into the side this term so this might not have come as a surprise, but it's certainly a welcome boost to supporters. This is, of course, after another injury was confirmed recently, with Yerry Mina picking up a thigh issue in training. Phil Kirkbride is joined by Dave Prentice, Adam Jones and Sam Carroll to discuss Everton's brilliant position at left-back - compared to the potential issues in central defence. Enjoy.

After a quiet few weeks since the end of the Premier League season, things are start to happen at Everton, and just after your latest Royal Blue podcast was recorded, captain Phil Jagielka announced he would be leaving the club after 12 years of sterling service once his contract expires. Host Phil Kirkbride had quizzed Dave Prentice, Adam Jones and Gavin Buckland on why it was taking so long to get a resolution on the long-serving defender's future. But while we now have that, the question over whether fellow Blues stalwart Leighton Baines will sign a new deal remains unanswered. Why that is the case is discussed here, as is West Ham United's pursuit of Andre Gomes. Should Everton be worried? Also on the agenda is the club's apparent desire to appoint a certain Luis Boa Morte as Marco Silva's new number two before talks turns to Phil's recent interview with former Blues boss Ronald Koeman. Did Koeman deserve more time at Goodison? And would he have fared better under the club's current structure? Whatever your thoughts on Koeman - and let's face it, sympathy for the Dutchman is in short supply - it makes for interesting listening. Enjoy. For Evertoninans, Saturday's FA Cup final between Manchester City and Watford may well refresh the memory of the last time their side reached a Wembley showpiece. That came in 2009 when, despite Louis Saha scoring the fastest goal in FA Cup final history, the Blues were eventually beaten 2-1 by a Chelsea team in their pomp. An unlikely substitute for David Moyes that boiling hot day was Lars Jacobsen, who came on for Tony Hibbert at half-time in what would prove to be his last appearance for the club. And nearly 10 years on, our Everton FC reporter Adam Jones caught up with the former Denmark international for a special Royal Blue podcast. In it, Jacobsen explains how he eventually became a Blue, with a little help from Tommy Gravesen, what it was like playing alongside the likes of Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill and Leighton Baines, and what is was like playing for Moyes, who got his man at the second time of asking. Life at Goodison could not have got off to a worse start for Jacobsen but he did fight his way back to fitness to battle Hibbert for the right-back spot, which culminated in that afternoon at Wembley. The 39-year-old recalls what was going through his mind when Moyes told him he would be coming on in the second half, and why he made a decision to leave after the game. The decision to join up with Sam Allardyce at Blackburn Rovers was one he still regrets seeing as he proudly calls Everton the biggest and best club he played for in his career. And before this must-listen podcast ends, Jacobsen gives his opinion on the current Blues crop, who he watches regularly as a pundit back home in Denmark. Enjoy. This weeks episode is a little bit different. I have decided to base this episode around mental health awareness. I feel by talking openly about my struggles with mental health issues, hopefully I can encourage other people to open up if they are struggling. I actually made a youtube video about my mental health issues a year or two ago and I had some amazing messages from people telling me that after watching, they had felt similar to how I had been feeling and decided to get help. This made me feel like opening up on a personal level was well worth it because people had benefitted from it. I have been open and honest in this episode, I really hope that if one person listens and decides to get some help or if somebody listens and then makes an effort to look out for people they know that may need help, I will have achieved my aim. Thank you so much for listening to this episode. If you would like to ask any questions about anything I talk about in the episode, drop me a line to pete@cutthroatpete.co or reach out on Instagram.. Marco Silva was back in front of the media this afternoon for the final time this season - and we have every word the Everton manager had to say in what was an interesting press conference. The Blues head to Tottenham Hotspur's new ground on Sunday and Silva is asked whether it could be the perfect time to play Mauricio Pochettino's men given their exerts in midweek, when they produced a miraculous recovery to beat Ajax and qualify for the Champions League final. Tottenham's success is even more impressive given they did not sign a single player in the summer or January. But if reports from Spain are to be believed, Spurs are set to steal Andre Gomes from the under the noses of Everton, who were also dealt a blow this week in their pursuit of Kurt Zouma when Chelsea's transfer ban was upheld. Silva speaks on both subjects, as well as Morgan Schneiderlin's form, the futures of Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines, the season as a whole, the excellent defensive record, and the areas of improvement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who the Blues boss confirms will be one of two strikers to miss the trip to Tottenham. Everton will go into their last home game of the season at Goodison Park in good spirits after taking 17 points from the last 27 on offer, but did Saturday's 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace highlight a problem that has never really been solved since Romelu Lukaku's departure. It's one of the big talking points of the View from the Gwladys Street fans' podcast, featuring Blues Tom Clarke and Anthony McEllin and hosted by Paul Wheelock. The trio are full of praise for the job Dominic Calvert-Lewin has done leading the job but does the 22-year-old's lack of goal threat - for the time being at least - underline why the number one priority for Marco Silva and Marcel Brands this summer has to be a prolific striker. Potential targets are offered up while there is also a wilful discussion about Lukaku's form at Manchester United and some unsurprising comments from the forward. Despite the stalemate at Selhurst Park damaging Everton's chances of making Europe, there is plenty of praise and surprise at two statistics offered up by Paul, which banish a certain Silva myth. Talk then turns to the futures of loaees Kurt Zouma and Andre Gomes and stalwarts Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka, who could all be appearing in a blue shirt (or just at the ground, in the suspended Gomes' case) at Goodison for the last time on Friday against Burnley. Victory over Sean Dyche's side would strengthen Everton's prospects of finishing seventh, but even they were to come eighth, or lower, Tom and Anthony explain why this season has been so much better than last and why it offers real hope for the future. With Marcel Brands and Marco Silva set to hold talks over the future of Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines, with the expectation that the long-serving duo will get an answer on new contracts before the final home game of the season, a large part of the latest Royal Blue podcast concerns two players who have been cornerstones for the club. Phil Kirkbride is the man firing the questions at Dave Prentice, Sam Carroll and Paul Wheelock, who start by discussing whether it's right that Baines - as is anticipated - is offered a new deal. But will he accept? And is there another club in the Premier League that has such strength in depth at left-back? Prenno then gives his hunch as to whether Jags will also be given the chance to stay, which leads to a debate about whether Everton can be afford to be sentimental when it comes to their captain. The second part of the podcast concentrates on the PFA Team of the Year and the omission of Lucas Digne. But given Paul Pogba bizarrely did get in, Phil wonders if a different Blues player should also feel hard done-by. And before he and Sam head off to London, the panel preview Saturday's clash at Crystal Palace and give their predictions. Enjoy. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

The former Academy graduate is preparing to face the Blues with Oldham Athletic this evening in the Checkatrade Trophy and sat down with the ECHO to reflect on his time at Goodison.Baxter, the youngest player to have represented the club, talks candidly about the lifeline Everton handed him in 2017 when he faced "some very dark moments" during a drugs ban.The 26-year-old spent last season with the Blues' under-23s in the hope of relaunching a career that lay in tatters and says he owes a debt of gratitude to Bill Kenwright and others who gave him a "third chance".Baxter also provides fascinating insight into playing under David Moyes, how a moment on his debut will haunt him forever and how close he came to playing in the 2009 FA Cup final. The Bootle born attacker reveals a "surreal" experience with Tim Cahill, the truth about the new contract he turned down in 2012 and how Joleon Lescott delivered a painful lesson in training.Baxter goes on to discuss Phil Neville, Leighton Baines, being a mentor to Everton's young players and much, much more.Sit back, relax and enjoy. Host Phil Kirkbride is back with the second and final Royal Blue podcast of the week, and just like last Friday, he is joined by Dave Prentice, Adam Jones and Paul Wheelock.Marco Silva, in contrast, has not yet had the luxury of naming the same side, and the panel discuss whether he should make changes for the visit of a club that Everton have a remarkable record against at Goodison Park. But will the atmosphere be different compared to the last time Fulham came to town? Roberto Martinez is brought up for the first, but certainly not the last time, in the podcast, before talk turns to the public persona of the manager currently in the Everton hotseat.Silva's midfield options for the clash with the Cottagers are discussed, as is the situation surrounding Yerry Mina, and who should fill his shoes while the big summer signing attempts to overcome a new injury problem.Fresh from Jordan Pickford putting pen to paper on a six-year deal, Phil kicks off an interesting debate about which Blues player should be next in line for a new contract, and what the future holds for Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines, before the show rounds off with something that may have gone unnoticed at the Emirates last weekend.Enjoy. CoG Studios, CA -- The LA Galaxy are gearing up for a Cali-Clasico rivalry with the San Jose Earthquakes. And they're facing a team that is worse than they are in the friendly confines of StubHub Center with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. It has the makings of a win, if we're honest. And that's a good thing for the Galaxy! Your hosts Josh Guesman and Eric Vieira are back to walk you through 65 minutes of Galaxy-talk, news, and entertainment. And with the start of a very busy time for the club, the guys are chalk-full of information you can use to impress your friends. In the rumor department, Josh and Eric will discuss the Galaxy's involvement with Everton's Leighton Baines. Is this a realistic target for the Galaxy? Could this be an answer to the Galaxy's defensive issues? Or has everything on this front come to a screeching halt? Staying on the defensive side of things, the guys will address a bigger rumor that could see American International Geoff Cameron join the Galaxy. They'll discuss what bringing Cameron to the club could mean, how much it might cost, and whether or not, from the public relations side of things, he could be a good fit in Los Angeles. Then Josh and Eric will tell you about the very real possibility the Galaxy may have finally had it with the dos Santos brothers. With rumors swirling that the brothers may be on the trading block and that the club might be looking for suitors for after the World Cup. Could this be a huge first step in clearing the payroll of $8 million?  Finally, your hosts will get you ready for Friday's matchup with the San Jose Earthquakes as they take your calls and give you all the latest info on the Galaxy's NorCal foes.  We're glad you could join us and we can't wait to see you as the Galaxy's schedule gets crazy busy in the next 16 days! Saints were painfully close to taking all three points on Saturday at Goodison Park. After taking the lead through a well worked team goal finished off by Nathan Redmond at the back post, Saints took the 1-0 lead into stoppage time, though they were light a man after Yoshida was sent off for picking up a second yellow in the 85th minute.   Even after McCarthy made a spectacular save to deny Leighton Baines from a central free kick, John Moss let stoppage time enter the 6th minute of the 4 (no, that’s not an error), and, with the last kick of the match, Tom Davies’ effort from the top of the box took a deflection off of Wesley Hoedt and past an already committed McCarthy.   The draw pulled Saints out of the relegation zone and puts all the pressure and focus on Tuesday night’s clash with Swansea and the Liberty Stadium. Harry Holder (@nadaIesque on Twitter), admin for @TheSaintsReport, joined me to discuss the match and how the other results affect Saints standing in the table.   Harry is also on Instagram and I regularly use his photos from the match on my Instagram page, so please make sure to check him out @hholderphoto and @hholder16.   This podcast is partnered with The Saints Report. #157. On this week's pod Ed & Paul look back on United's victory over Swansea at the Liberty Stadium. The Reds picked up David Moyes' first Premier League win, scoring three 'worldies' on the way, although there were times when the result was more flattering than the performance. Two goals from Danny Welbeck puts the young England international in good stead for the season ahead. Can the much discussed player improve on his meagre goals tally from last season? We talk Wayne Rooney - the player made his comeback against Swansea, creating two goals but looking well below acceptable fitness. Meanwhile, United put in a low bid for Everton pair Marouanne Fellaini and Leighton Baines. The bid was rejected by the Merseyside outfit who claimed to be "insulted" by the "derisory" bid. Finally, we look ahead to Monday night's game against Chelsea.
