After 7 and a half years, the longest gap between appearances in Sound Off Podcast history, Leslie Scott finally returns. And to say things have changed is a massive understatement.Back in 2016, Leslie was the PD for 107.7 The End in Seattle, driving the station to huge success in the millennial market. Since then, she's taken on a few more stations, been elevated to overseeing programming of Audacy's exclusive streaming-only channels... And like so many people in radio, been restructured out of a job. Their loss. We discuss where Leslie's currently at both life and career wise, but mainly this is a time for us to catch up and learn how Leslie's thoughts and predictions from 2016 have aged. For the most part, Leslie's values remain the same: Radio and digital should be friends, not enemies; Radio stations need to focus on curating personalities above all else; and the youngest generation is a giant well of untapped potential listeners who should be catered to. However, interestingly, Leslie is no longer a part of that youngest generation. She once was a sort of "Millennial Whisperer" in the radio industry, but Gen Z is a whole different beast, which we discuss at length. 7 years doesn't sound like a long time, but it really is, especially in an industry that's been scrambling so hard to keep up with the youth, and Leslie has a lot of thoughts about the way things have changed. We also discuss women's progress in the radio industry, or rather, its stagnation in recent years. Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media published his AQ6 survey earlier this year, which you can read about here. It showed that women's representation in radio hasn't really improved since 2019. Being both a woman herself and serving on the board of directors for mentoring and inspiring women in radio, Leslie shares some interesting insights into why that might be.If you haven't heard our original interview with Leslie, and you'd like to compare for yourself, you can listen to it here. If nothing else, it's an interesting time capsule to a world before TikTok.A Transcript and video version of the episode is available on the network page. Please sign up for the SOUNDING OFF Newsletter. Leslie Scott got bored of a game and invented a new one, Jenga. She also almost went bankrupt trying to bring it to market. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is... Well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [Tapper's Jewelers Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders Podcast. Dave Young here alongside Stephen Semple. And we're talking about empires, and the brand name that you've whispered in my ear just before we started the countdown to record here, I'm like, "Okay, well, yeah, I've heard of it. I never thought of it as an empire, but let's chase this rabbit into the woods and see." Jenga. And we're talking about the game, right? The little wooden pieces, and you stack them up. Stephen Semple: Yeah. You take one out and you put it on the top and you stack them. And the loser is the one who makes the tower fall down. Dave Young: Makes the whole thing topple. I'll be honest with you, I don't know that I've ever played a complete game of Jenga. Stephen Semple: Oh, well, next time we get together, we are going to go to the store and we're going to buy a game of Jenga and we're going to crack some beers and we're going to play a game. Dave Young: I know at the Fang and Feather on the Wizard Academy campus, they have it way oversized, and it may not even be Jenga brand, but it's almost like two by four pieces that they play with. It's actually become a word that's entered the vernacular, because you look at things and you're like, "Oh, well, this is like a big Jenga thing," or, "Unraveling this problem is like a big Jenga puzzle." Stephen Semple: And it's interesting, because when I did say it to you when we were doing the countdown, you made a comment, you made a comment going, "I don't really think of it as being an empire." Well, here's how big it is. In the history of games, it is number three in terms of games sold, behind Monopoly, Scrabble and then Jenga. They have sold 80 million units. Dave Young: What does it cost for a Jenga game? Stephen Semple: Oh, I don't know. I didn't check into that. I didn't even look into that. Dave Young: It's literally a game that if you know somebody with a table saw and a sander, you could make it. Right? Stephen Semple: It's a little more complicated than that. So the game was invented by Leslie Scott. And as I said, when you are the third-largest game in the history of mankind, that's a pretty big deal. And, like a lot of empire builders that we've come across, she had no background in games. She had no background in her industry. In fact, she worked for Intel. Dave Young: Oh, no kidding. Stephen Semple: Yeah. So in 1982, she finishes boarding school. She grew up in Africa, and she returns home to UK and she's living with her mother. And her younger brother loved playing with blocks, five years old, and loved playing with blocks. So they would play together with these wooden blocks that she had brought back from Africa. But she got kind of bored with just stacking them up so they would create new games instead of just stacking the blocks. And Leslie suddenly had this idea of taking away a block at a time, and they played around with this, and the game started to evolve, and they started to create rules. And they started testing how unstable can you make the structure, playing with these different bricks? And of course, they decide the loser is the one where it makes it all fall down. So really, this started off as a way to entertain a five-year-old. And Leslie, as I said, worked at Intel.

Then, in the Fall of ‘91, the Seattle scene produced three of the most influential rock albums of all time: Pearl Jam's “Ten,” Soundgarden's “Badmotorfinger,” and Nirvana's “Nevermind.” Following this, there was no going back. Today I present to you two Black baritones who made their mark in Europe and the United States over the course of several decades. Leslie Scott (ca. 1920-1969), who appeared on the State Department-sponsored tour of Porgy and Bess in the 1950s, and who played Jake in the now-obscure 1959 film version of the piece, began his career as a big-band singer. About his fellow singer, bass-baritone Owen Williams, I have been unable to discover much of anything, in spite of the fact that, like his compatriot Kenneth Spencer, he was featured in German film and television in the 1950s and 1960s and also recorded extensively in the 1960s, in his case, for Philips Records. Both Williams and Scott display undeniable vocal and interpretive gifts that are sometimes obscured by other factors, such as the tackiness of the arrangements and the pervasive and unchecked plantation nostalgia of the period, especially in Germany. Close examination of the recorded legacies of both Williams and Scott provides a partial glimpse into their lives and careers, even if too much of it today remains hidden in obscurity. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody's core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. A Black doll named Baby Nancy, Sidewalk Chalk, and the wooden block game Jenga were inducted into the 2020 National Toy Hall of Fame. Since 1998, The Strong National Museum of Play in New York has been adding three toys to its Toy Hall of Fame every year. The toys are chosen by educators and experts in the field of learning and creativity. Last year, the museum got 3,000 nominations, which it whittled down to 12 finalists including bingo and Tamagotchi. According to the museum, 2020's newly inducted toys were recognized for their popularity and innovation. Sidewalk Chalk was chosen because of its roots as an artistic toy. Apart from creating art, it could also be used in educational lessons and playground games. The second toy, Baby Nancy, was created in 1986. It made history as the first Black doll with an afro-textured hairstyle. In the year of its release, the toy became the best-selling Black doll in Los Angeles. According to a representative from The Strong museum, the creation of the doll sparked commercial and cultural developments. The last toy, the wooden block game Jenga, was chosen for its simplicity and exciting gameplay. Players remove blocks from a tower without collapsing it. According to Jenga's inventor Leslie Scott, the game was based on wooden blocks she used to play in Africa when she was a child. The three toys will be permanently displayed at The Strong museum alongside previously inducted toys like the Hula Hoop, Barbie, and Crayola Crayons. The museum accepts nominations year-round, so people can always nominate their favorite toy via the hall of fame website if it did not make the cut that year.

Today’s episode (in celebration of Countermelody’s first birthday!) picks up where the last one left off: more musicals, more opera (and operaish) singers! Excerpts from cast recordings, radio broadcasts, telecasts, and live performances highlight the work of singers who divided their time, to a greater or lesser extent, between the Broadway stage and the operatic stage. We begin with the great bass-baritones (Ezio Pinza, Cesare Siepi, Giorgio Tozzi, and José Van Dam) and move through the great Broadway (and sometime opera) baritones (Alfred Drake, John Raitt, Bruce Yarnell, Robert Trehy, Leslie Scott, Lawrence Winters, and John Reardon) with a nod to other opera singers who have also graced the Broadway stage (Helen Traubel, Shirley Verrett, Mona Paulee, Dorothy Sarnoff, Risë Stevens, Lee Venora, Camilla Williams, and Carol Brice). We then consider singers whose vocal abilities could easily have put them on the opera stage, had they chosen to so devote themselves (Alice Ghostley, Madeline Kahn, Barbara Cook, Florence Henderson, Judy Kaye, Lisa Vroman, Audra McDonald, Victoria Clark, Rebecca Luker, and the late Marin Mazzie). The episode also features tributes to two recently deceased divas (Gabriella Tucci and Christiane Eda-Pierre) as well as a spotlight on the gorgeous soprano Margaret Tynes, who just celebrated her 101st birthday. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody’s core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. The Royale Podcast is a limited run podcast that chronicles the creation process of the play. Hosted by GFM's Music Editor Ivan Orr, we hope that this inside look into this production will inspire you to support Black Theater and Black Art. The Royale is not about boxing. It is about a fight. This play asks questions most white people never have to encounter in a lifetime because you are born into a society that answers it for you every minute of every day. For those of us in Black bodies, these are questions we live our lives bobbing, weaving and sparring with. What is your worth? What are you willing to sacrifice to prove your worth? When is the sacrifice too much? How do you make that decision and not go insane from the sadness and anger the inevitable consequences produce? How do you demonstrate your humanity when no one believes you are human? As Director, I invited some of the best minds I know, my cast members and the Artistic Director of Live Arts to help me talk about the issues and possibly answer some of the questions. Professor A. D. Carson, Professor Kwame Otu, my lovely cast and Artistic Director Bree Luck all were vital to the telling of this story and my vision. - Leslie Scott-Jones For more information about The Royale please visit http://livearts.org

Alyssa Page grew up in Connecticut, found her way on to the radio by doing everything. Then worked her ass off to get to Atlanta and then a dream position on the legendary 107.7 The End in Seattle. This podcast marks the third member of the radio station to appear on the podcast, and with good reason. The station is oft quoted as one other station's could look to for innovative and brilliant ideas. So what's it like to work there? Alyssa answered those questions along with sharing some of her interview strategies, show prep tactics and what she does when she is not on air. Alyssa and I met back in 2016 at the Conclave and every year she is a joy to see again. The excitement in her eyes was infectious as she told me she has just landed her dream job in Seattle, and in the subsequent years, had been elevated to the midday show. We spoke about the importance of networking, and what attending the Conclave has meant to her career. She also gives back by volunteering on the Conclave committee to put on a great event every year. Please consider joining her and a few others who have also appeared on this podcast June 19-21 in Minneapolis. Of note, our main sponsors Promosuite will also be there. In this episode we spend time discussing the challenges involved with selling at a radio station in this digital revolution. His solution is rather simple: Stop Selling Radio. We discuss best practices for implementing new sales strategies, focus on some radio stations doing this right, and get slightly controversial (or innovative?) when it comes to selling podcasts. Radio may be going about it all wrong. Definitely subscribe to the Jacob's Media Daily Blog. Paul will also be honoured at the 44th Conclave in Minneapolis this June when he will be receiving the coveted Rockwell Award. Paul will also be the keynote lunch speaker at the Western Association of Broadcasters in early June. Paul also spoke glowingly about Seattle's 107.7 The End. My podcast this week is with Leslie Scott from the Distress Centre of Ottawa. We felt it was timely for her to come in and speak about the reality surrounding the calls the Centre receives at this time of year and what it’s like to be on the other end, answering those calls. The Centre runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — even during natural disasters like the 1998 ice storm and the recent tornados when power was out for days. Leslie is able to take us through the types of callers, situations, and outreach that occur on any given day, and how they are able to offer support. It’s an incredibly difficult time of the year for many. We also spend quite a bit of time talking about the recruitment, training, and selection of volunteers. At times during this episode I had to sit and reflect on the courage it takes people to reach out and ask for help, and the responsibility taken on by the person answering the call.  Sign up for updates! Gregr is the morning show host at 107.7 The End in Seattle. Last summer at the Podcast Movement, Gregr shared the stage at Jacob's Media's Broadcaster meet Podcaster series. At dinner he had the deer in the headlights look. Turns out he had just became a dad for the first time days earlier. Throughout dinner we shared radio and podcast stories. I couldn't believe he had 4 podcasts on top of a morning radio show in Seattle. Now there were other people at dinner that night and we could have gone on forever talking podcast, radio and Seattle Sounders. So I told him we would finish the conversation on this podcast. What ensues is this conversation.Just a note that we did an episode about 107-7 the End's #2MinutePromise and talked Millennials with the station's program director Leslie Scott back in Episode 23. And again, in this show we will touch on the 2 minute promise and wonder why more stations don't do it.The podcast is sponsored by Promosuite.
