Fr. Eric Nicolai preached this meditation on August 29, 2024 at Kintore College, Toronto. Matt 14, 1-12: The account of Herod's court, with the trendy crowd, an atmosphere of sensuality, a mood of decadence, the latest fashions, everyone vying for attention and positioning themselves in the right place to be noticed. Naturally alcohol was predominant for everyone. Certainly no self-restraint, and as a result, all judgment was disordered, immature, uncontrolled and even abusive. He was blinded by his own passions, because of what he saw. One of the greatest services we can render to people today is to awaken in them the desire for personal prayer, that silent, interior prayer of the heart so recommended by all the saints in the Christian tradition. In this episode you can hear the first half of my conversation with Bob Lawrence (Richard Thompson). We talk about his start in radio and his time as part of the original London Music Radio. We look at the trials and tribulations of being a LBP operator in the 1970's and the camaraderie between stations of the time.
Kele Okereke had been working on his band for quite some time before landing on a dedicated 4 piece line-up. After a year and a half of road testing their songs at clubs and pubs across London, it was a chance meeting at a Franz Ferdinand gig that Kele was able to hand over a demo CD of his band's material to a couple of the Franz members, as well as influential British radio DJ Steve Lamacq. From there, radio play and single releases commenced. Finally "Bloc Party" launched onto the scene in 2005 with their debut album "Silent Alarm", a blistering, energy filled piece of genius. Since then they have not stopped touring and releasing new music, albeit with a number of line-up changes, and a brief hiatus.Join Jay and Jesse as they discuss the history and creatives approaches of London's "Bloc Party"."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
"Franc Moody" is an electronic/dance/funk duo made up of Ned Franc and Jon Moody. The pair began their musical journey in separate bands, often playing what they call "Swamp Pop", a big-band style fusion of traditional rhythm and blues and country. They would play this music together with a collective of other musicians in a warehouse venue they dubbed "The Arch", where late nights and a rave-like atmosphere were common. From those early days, Ned and Jon decided to join forces, crafting their own unique sound of uplifting, dance orientated disco vibes.Join Jay and Jesse as they discuss the music and creative approaches of London's "Franc Moody"."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

"Django Django" are a British art rock band based in London England. The four piece originally met while studying in Edinburgh. The genesis of the project came from drummer/producer David Maclean, who approached music from a DJ background, primarily beat juggling hip hop before getting into other genres of dance music. When David discovered the drums he would initially record short live loops to incorporate into his DJ sets. It was this approach that led David to create his own beats, and eventually to the initial ideas that would form the basis of Django Django's self-titled debut album.Frontman Vincent Neff started out by teaching himself guitar, by studying the Beatles. It was a process that led him to eventually mess around writing his own songs."Django Django" was initially a melding of David's ability to write beats and instrumentals, and Vincent's ability to craft songs, lyrics and melodies. Not long after they began to collaborate, they drafted in fellow students Jimmy Dixon on bass and Tommy Grace on synths. To learn the full story, check out this week's episode of Roots to Grooves!"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
In February 2020, Caribou returned with his first new album after an absence of six years. It was released to universal critical acclaim and commercial success, and an extensive world tour was planned. And then …. Suddenly …. Everything was off, as the Covid pandemic shut down the planet, including live music. 2020 turned out to be the first year since 1976 wherein I did not see a single live music performance. A seriously depressing proposition for an admitted live-music addict. It also meant I could not finish my initial sequence of podcast episodes of one show from each decade of my concert-going.And then … Suddenly, in the summer of '21, through vaccines and the socially responsible sacrifices of many good people, live shows were on again including Caribou's delayed tour which included a stop here in London, Ontario, in November. “But if we buy tickets, will there even be a show?” We wondered. Or will everything close back down and, Suddenly, it'll be off again? Join me and my guest—Colin, my nephew, aka Fast and Bulbous in past blog entries—for a night of magic (albeit with some asterisks and apprehensions), last-minute decisions, and sprightly social intercourse with the over-served and mushroomed. Next on Stage: Join me next time for another out-of-sequence show with one of two anniversary podcasts I'll be doing in 2022.While I originally launched the written blog on OpenSalon.com on June 3, 2010, and celebrate every year on that date with my own mock-up of a favourite album cover—it was the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers for 2021— I didn't get around to marking the podcasts' first anniversary on Feb. 7, 2021.So, to make up for that, I am going to do two anniversary episodes this year: one coinciding with the podcast launch, and one in June in tandem with the blog's 12th anniversary. What I will be doing with these anniversary episodes is that I will be selecting gigs from throughout my concert-going years that are personally significant for me or that I really want to highlight or talk about. And my first anniversary podcast jumps into 1988 and a gig wherein I had some extraordinary revelations that I have never forgotten.Join me next time for Episode 23, concert no. 51, and an unforgettable show by Keith Richards and the X-Pensive Winos at the then-recently—and beautifully—refurbished Fox Theatre in Detroit, on December 8, 1988.Unexpectedly, and through a bizarre merging of synchronicity and happenstance, I find my self directly in front of Keith, about 10-or-so feet away, for his entire encore. And it results in an epiphany.I'll also be writing a full blog entry on the show as a companion piece to the podcast.Tune in next time for avoiding a strip search at the border, being in agony and the healing power of music, and some realizations about rock stars. The delayed Beat & REM show from 1983 will be Episode 24.(EP 23, no. 51) Keith Richards and the X-Pensive Winos: Connection, Fox Theatre, Detroit, Michigan, USA, December 8, 1988

"Arlo Parks" is a British singer-songwriter and poet from West London.A relatively new artist on the scene, her debut album "Collapsed in Sunbeams" was only released in 2021, but since 2018 she has dropped sporadic singles as well as a well received EP. Arlo's music has been described as R&B, Neo Soul and even Indie Folk, due to her poetic/thoughtful lyrics and soothing voice. One of her big breakthroughs came in 2018 when upon uploading her music to BBC's "Introducing" initiative, a radio DJ passed on her tracks to the management firm "Beatnick Creative", who have since become her managers. There is a lot more to know about this rising artist. Jay and Jesse discuss her multi-ethnic background, the effect her songs have had on the public at large, and the guys spin some of their favorite tracks from Arlo's repertoire. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
"Alfa Mist" is a British Jazz pianist, producer and rapper based in London.Growing up in the London borough of Newham to a single immigrant mother, Alfa's love of music originally led him to start producing beats in the vein of J Dilla. His curiosity in how hip-hop found it's roots led him to discover the original Jazz records that these producers were sampling from. His discovery of old jazz evolved into Alfa wanting to self-teach himself piano at the age of 17, so that he could bring the chords and harmonies to life in his own compositions. Alfa has gone on to release multiple albums and EP's, often featuring conversations with his brothers and sisters on themes of mental health and self-image. As usual, there is much more to know. "Dry Cleaning" are an English post-punk band who formed in South London in 2018. Despite being relatively new to the scene, the core members have been playing music together, and in seperate acts for over decade. When career success eluded them they took once last stab at a new project, and after a chance meeting with vocalist Florence Shaw, the sound of "Dry Cleaning" was born. Her vocals have been described by some as culturally relevant, but singing and performing did not come naturally to Florence, and it took some convincing for her to officially join the band. There is a lot more to know. "Still Corners" are a Dream pop/neo-psychedelia duo originally formed in London by English singer Tessa Murray, and American producer/multi-instrumentalist Greg Hughes. The duo met by chance when they were both stranded at a train station in South London. After their train was diverted for unknown reasons, the pair got into conversation and realized they were both working on creating music. They made a date to hit the studio. I had a chat with Anna Meredith, who is the only person I can think of who has been awarded both an MBE and released albums on indie label Moshi Moshi. Mercury nominated Anna has been Composer in Residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and won the 2019 Ivor Novello Composer Award for Innovation. Not only that but was Goldie's mentor on the TV show Classic Goldie and at the same time I find her own LPs bristle with an impossible to define physical voltage . I love her unique approach to music, and we had a revealing and, I think, funny chat that debunks a lot of the romantic perceptions about creativity.http://www.annameredith.comTitle music by ESO

London-based songwriter Chashe has certainly had an interesting life story. Born in Zimbabwe, educated at the University of Cape Town and Berklee College of Music in Boston, she has a lot of stories to share. We talk all about her time in Boston and the different bands she got the chance to see, with plenty of my own stories from living there. Chashe's mom has been a central figure in her music career, whether it was encouraging her to pursue her dreams at a young age, to being the ultimate 'band mom' today. She also talks about working with her partner in the studio and how they complement each other as a team. “Lucid” is Chashe's newest album, and it's an eclectic mix of styles and sounds. We look at the different stories she shares, from there being no rules when it comes to love, or moving ahead without looking back. She's also got new music in the works, and potentially some events to look forward to. Following this, kick back and enjoy “Lucid,” followed by “9:45,” both from the new album and two of my favorites.
