Was genau verbirgt sich hinter dieser Idee? »Artificial Unintelligence is the means by which people of perfectly adequate natural intelligence are transformed by policies, procedures and protocols into animate but inflexible cogs. They speak and behave, but do not think or decide.« Wie werden aus Menschen mit natürlicher Intelligenz bloß unflexible Rädchen? Wir reflektieren die zunehmende Strukturierung und Standardisierung in Organisationen, um mit wachsender gesellschaftlicher Komplexität umgehen zu können. Ein Ausgangspunkt der Episode ist die Frage, warum wir in immer mehr Organisationen eine strukturelle und individuelle Inkompetenz erleben? Ein Zitat aus dem genannten Artikel fasst es treffend zusammen: »‘I didn't find anything in common in these cases,' I said, ‘except the stupidity of your staff. I expected him to get angry, but he maintained a Buddha-like calm. ‘Oh, I know,' he replied, ‘but that is the standard expected now.'« Wie konnte es so weit kommen? Liegt es an der Industrialisierung, die laut Dan Davies in The Unaccountability Machine besagt: »A very important consequence of industrialisation is that it breaks the connection between the worker and the product.« Oder hat es damit zu tun, wie wir mit Überwältungung durch Information umgehen. »When people are overwhelmed by information, they always react in the same way – by building systems.« Sind Menschen, die individuell denken, in solchen Systemen eher hinderlich als hilfreich? Doch was passiert, wenn komplexe Probleme auftreten, die Flexibilität und Kreativität erfordern? Sind unsere Organisationen überhaupt noch in der Lage, mit unerwarteten Situationen umzugehen, oder arbeiten sie nur noch »maschinenhaft« nach Vorgaben – und das mit einem Maschinenverständnis des 19. Jahrhunderts? Ist die Stagnation, die wir seit Jahrzehnten spüren, ein Symptom dieses Systemversagens? Und wie hängt das mit der sogenannten »Unaccountability Machine« zusammen, die Davies beschreibt und die man im Deutschen vielleicht als »Verantwortungslosigkeits-Maschine« bezeichnen könnte? Kann es sogar sein, dass manche Strukturen bewusst als »self-organising control fraud« gestaltet sind? Ein weiteres damit verbundenes Thema ist: Wie beeinflussen moderne Prognose-Tools wie Recommender Systems unser Verhalten? Dienen sie wirklich dazu, bessere Entscheidungen zu ermöglichen, oder machen sie uns hauptsächlich vorhersagbarer? »Menschen, die dies und jedes gekauft/gesehen haben, haben auch dies gekauft/gesehen« – ist das noch Prognose oder schon Formung des Geschmacks? Und was ist mit wissenschaftlichen Modellen komplexer Systeme, die oft relativ beliebige Ergebnisse liefern? Formen sie nicht auch die Meinung von Wissenschaftlern, Politikern und der Gesellschaft – etwa durch die überall beobachtbare schlichte Medienberichterstattung? Bleibt außerdem der Mensch wirklich »in the loop«, wie oft behauptet wird, oder ist er längst ein »artificial unintelligent man in the loop«, der Empfehlungen des Systems kaum hinterfragen kann? Die Episode wirft auch einen kritischen Blick auf naive Ideologien wie das »Scientific World Management« von Alfred Korzybski, der schrieb: „it will give a scientific foundation to Political Economy and transform so-called ‘scientific shop management' into genuine ‘scientific world management.'“ War dieser Wunsch nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg verständlich, aber letztlich völlig missgeleitet? Und warum erleben wir heute eine Wiederkehr des naiven Szientismus, der glaubt, »die Wissenschaft« liefere objektive Antworten? Wie hängen solche Ideen mit Phänomenen wie »Science Diplomacy« zusammen? Die zentrale Frage der Episode lautet: Wie erreicht man, dass Menschen in Verantwortung korrekt im Sinne des definierten Zwecks der Organisation entscheiden? Doch was ist überhaupt der Zweck eines Systems? Stafford Beer sagt: »The purpose of a system is what it does.« Stimmt der definierte Zweck – etwa Gesundheit im Gesundheitssystem – noch mit der Realität überein? Warum entscheiden Ärzte oft defensiv im eigenen Interesse statt im Interesse der Patienten? Und wie überträgt sich dieses Verhalten auf andere Organisationen – von Ministerien bis hin zur Wissenschaft? Davies beschreibt das ab Beispiel des akademischen Publikationswesens so: „A not-wholly-unfair analysis of academic publishing would be that it is an industry in which academics compete against one another for the privilege of providing free labour for a profitmaking company, which then sells the results back to them at monopoly prices.“ Und weiter: „The truly valuable output of the academic publishing industry is not journals, but citations.“ Was ist aus der Idee geworden, dass die Generierung von neuem und relevantem Wissen die Aufgabe von Wissenschaft, Förderung und Publikationswesen ist? When Gregor Mendel published the results of his experiments on pea plants in 1866 he initiated a fierce debate about the nature of heredity and genetic determinism that continues today. The battle lines were drawn in England in the late 19th century by William Bateson, who believed in fixed genetic inheritance, and W.F.R. Weldon, who argued that Mendel's experiments revealed far more variation than Bateson and his supporters acknowledged. The steady dings of notifications. The 40 tabs that greet you when you open your computer in the morning. The hundreds of unread emails, most of them spam, with subject lines pleading or screaming for you to click. Our attention is under assault these days, and most of us are familiar with the feeling that gives us — fractured, irritated, overwhelmed.D. Graham Burnett calls the attention economy an example of “human fracking”: With our attention in shorter and shorter supply, companies are going to even greater lengths to extract this precious resource from us. And he argues that it's now reached a point that calls for a kind of revolution. “This is creating conditions that are at odds with human flourishing. We know this,” he tells me. “And we need to mount new forms of resistance.”Burnett is a professor of the history of science at Princeton University and is working on a book about the laboratory study of attention. Large threats to the well-being of humankind such as the pandemic and climate change have cemented the notion that scientists across the globe naturally work together to solve the world's most pressing problems. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Nicolas de Condorcet (1743-94), known as the Last of the Philosophes, the intellectuals in the French Enlightenment who sought to apply their learning to solving the problems of their world. He became a passionate believer in the progress of society, an advocate for equal rights for women and the abolition of the slave trade and for representative government. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Nicolas de Condorcet (1743-94), known as the Last of the Philosophes, the intellectuals in the French Enlightenment who sought to apply their learning to solving the problems of their world. He became a passionate believer in the progress of society, an advocate for equal rights for women and the abolition of the slave trade and for representative government. She has done countless research on the history of the natural and human sciences from 16th-19th centuries. She has published on the history of probability and statistics (17th-19th cs.), natural history and natural philosophy (16th-18th cs.), the scientific persona (18th-19th cs.), changing standards of evidence and proof (16th-18thcs.), and the ideals and practices of scientific objectivity (18th-19th cs.). Current research interests include the moral authority of nature, the cognitive passions of wonder and curiosity, scientific drawing, and early modern ways of knowing. After graduating from Harvard University with her Ph.D., she taught at Brandeis University, University of Chicago, and Georg-August Universitat, she settled at the Max Planck Institute of the History of Science. Some of her most notable books, Objectivity, The Empire of Chance, and Wonders and the Order of Nature, which have in culmination earned her Pfizer Prizes and the Bainton Prize. Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. “The scientific community is by any measure a very strange kind of community”, writes my guest. “For starters, no one knows who exactly belongs to it... Far from living in neighborly harmony or even collegial mutual tolerance, the members of this uncommunal community compete ferociously and engage in notoriously vitriolic polemics … Although modern science has been called the locomotive of all modernity, the scientific community more closely resembles a medieval guild…” Given this, one is bound to ask how precisely this scattered contentious stratified “community” even exists, let alone cooperates. Yet cooperation has been a continuous strand uniting modern science. Lorraine Daston has described the growth and mutations of that community in her new book Rivals: How Scientists Learned to Cooperate. In Gender, Embodiment, and the History of the Scholarly Persona. Incarnations and Contestations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021), Professors Kirsti Niskanen and Michael J. Barany present a rich collection of essays on the historical construction and reinvention of scholarly personae. The book carries this investigation by focusing on three contextual conditions that play a decisive role in the fashioning of such personae: international travels, embodiment, and gender. The book also pays great attention to the role of incomes and funding opportunities in the evolution of scholarly personae in disciplines as varied as mathematics, philosophy, experimental psychology, pedagogy, history, and medicine. Niskanen and Barany “see the history of scholarly personae as occupying a vital space in cultural theories of science and scholarship”. This statement should be understood in at least two ways. Firstly, the study of scholarly personae delves into the dynamic interactions between personalities, institutions, professional ethos, social norms, international exchanges, and explains how these interactions generate ways of conducting and presenting one's life. Secondly, uncovering such histories of scholarly personae eventually leads to a better understanding of contextual forces that prevent or encourage the emergence of greater diversity and equity within academia today. At the intersection of a wide range of scholarly disciplines and geographical contexts, Gender, Embodiment, and the History of the Scholarly Persona represent a major contribution to the historical study of scientific personae since Lorraine Daston and H. Otto Sibum's special issue, “Scientific Personae and Their Histories”, published in 2003. Victor Monnin, Ph.D. is an historian of science specialized in the history of Earth sciences.
