Like many people, I love the well-produced 'live in studio' videos musicians and artists have done over the past decade or so, especially the ongoing series from NPR's Tiny Desk and KEXP's studio sessions. There's also other great performances that mostly are available only in the depths of YouTube, though it seems like some artists are finally realizing they could press these on vinyl or release them separately as well. Here's a few of my favorites over the years that I've been rocking to now and then but figured I'd throw into a mix. Salute to all these amazing folks - like Scarface says, there's something about great music man!! Tracklist: Anderson Paak, Scarface, Liz Vice, Suprise Chef, Jamila Woods, Mac Miller, Freddie Gibbs, Amos Miller, The Lox, Noname
On our first episode of 2026, we welcome rapper & producer B Cave to the show! B Cave shares his story of coming from a very musical family, but choosing to take sports such as baseball more seriously until he starting making beats in college. He then made the leap to move to LA right after his time playing baseball at Tampa University, knowing nobody and having no connections; he even lived in a hostile for 6 months. But B Cave persevered, and is now flourishing in his time out in LA, working with high-level producers such as Max Mitchell, and creating the duo 5TH YEAR with fellow collaborator Dayne Black B Cave is also fresh off of his latest solo album release ‘SAGE' which features some of his best work yet, and also comes off the heels of his most tumultuous year of his life, which included a serious arm injury that forced him to take a break from music altogether. The album is really a full-circle moment for B Cave, and he shares the in-depth story with us. B Cave and Mike also discuss a variety of other topics, including the legacy of Mac Miller, the importance of authenticity, writing music from real experiences, and so much more. Send us a textThank you, Chad Murphy, for making this week's episode possible!A bullied kid named Blue walked into a dojo and found a lifetime blueprint for leadership at home and at work. That mentor didn't just teach kicks—he taught trust, focus, and a community model that turns students into teachers. In this conversation, we go deep on how those early lessons shape the way we parent, listen, and show up for the people we lead.Blue Stiley is a professional keynote speaker, podcast host, and author who has spent decades uncovering and cultivating potential in himself and others. He discovered his passion for mentoring and entrepreneurship at just 13 while teaching martial arts, and over the past 30 years, he has carried that gift forward to inspire leaders, teams, and communities. We talk about “currency,” the motivations that really move someone, and how a single, well-aimed sentence from a trusted mentor can redirect a teenager more effectively than a hundred lectures. Blue shares a raw look at learning from two fathers: the sensei who modeled presence and the biological dad who modeled what to avoid. That “two-teacher lens” fuels his philosophy as a model, actor, strength coach to Olympians, and now keynote speaker: earn trust, make genuine connections, and build a community where people feel heard, seen, and valued. You'll hear practical mindset tools too. Leave problems at the door to train your focus. Put the phone down because a kid's request is a 10-minute window, not an hour. Let the egg break—experiments teach faster than warnings. Teach self-defense literacy without pressure by emphasizing hips-first power and clean fundamentals. And don't miss the baseball cards hustle: a cafeteria side deal turned into licensed tables at card shows, powered by a mom who drove the miles and believed. That story paid for college and cemented a simple definition of success—pickups after school, family dinners, and presence that compounds. If you're a parent, coach, or leader, this one will sharpen your approach. Listen, learn someone's currency, and build a community around them. If it resonates, tap follow, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review—what lesson are you taking into your home this week?Support the showPlease don't forget to leave us a review wherever you consume your podcasts! Please help us get more dads to listen weekly and become the ultimate leader of their homes!

Jessie Reyez is a singer and songwriter originally from Toronto. She's won two of Canada's Juno awards, and she's been nominated for a Grammy. In addition to writing her own music, Jessie's been a songwriter on tracks by Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa, Sam Smith, Eminem, and many others. You're probably aware that there are songwriters and producers whose names you'll find over and over again in the credits for big hits; Jessie is one of them. But for this episode, I talked to her about her own song "Goliath." And the day that she wrote that song, she happened to be in the studio with a bunch of other songwriters and producers. So I also talked to Jordan and Stefan Johnson, from the production team Monsters & Strangerz, and Jeff Gitelman, AKA Gitty. Between the three of them, their credits also include songs by Selena Gomez, Maroon 5, Alicia Keys, Mac Miller, and again, tons more. When a group like this gets together to write music, they don't always know if they're going to be making a song that's going to get recorded and released by an artist somewhere down the line, or if the song's going to get recorded at all. But in the case of "Goliath," what came out was a song that was very personal to Jessie Reyez. For more info, visit songexploder.net/jessie-reyez.

The shorthand reference for a wrestler not being used on TV is that they're "sitting in catering." They're sitting in the back, eating some food, while other wrestlers get the spotlight and the glory. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Andrew is joined by returning guest Sean Flynn to hunker down in catering and chow down on songs about food or have food in the title. Artists played include System of a Down, Adele, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Mac Miller, Nick Drake, King Crimson, Harry Styles, and more. We examine the tension between artistic evolution and audience expectations, using examples from Mac Miller to Paul Thomas Anderson to explore what happens when creators follow their interests rather than trying to replicate past successes. The conversation moves through Matthew's strategy of operating multiple YouTube channels as both creative experimentation and financial hedge—separating pure documentation from tutorial content while trying to preserve the act of curation from the corruption of commerce. The discussion deepens into questions about cultural pressure and achievement metrics: the constant comparison to others' milestones, the invisibility of what you've already accomplished when fixated on what's next, and how scarcity (real or perceived) compresses time and forces short-term thinking. We explore the concept of "chaotic clarity"—knowing exactly what you want to make but creating a mess in the execution—versus the anxiety of precarious stability where everything feels one incident away from collapse. The episode touches on sponsorship ethics, the difference between promotion and curation, and ultimately asks whether the framework of constant achievement is even the right lens for evaluating a creative life. We close by each defining our current season, revealing how different our experiences of uncertainty and momentum actually look. -Ai If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review. This week, I sat down with Elsie for her third appearance on the pod—one of my favorite recurring guests and one of the most thoughtful voices in music journalism. We dive deep into the state of hip-hop right now, breaking down albums from JID, Freddie Gibbs, Clipse, and Tyler, the Creator. We talk about what makes a live performance unforgettable, how rollouts have evolved in the streaming era, and the difference between artists who rap and artists who build worlds. Toward the end, we share our Mount Rushmore of songs we wish we could've been in the studio for while they were being made. If you're a rap nerd like us, this one's for you.
