In April 2026, Red Star member and DSA co-chair Megan Romer went to the party of the European Left Conference in Brussels. At this conference, she delivered remarks on the issues of militarism and austerity, and participated in discussions with other left parties on important political issues facing our movement around the world. Megan's remarks were published in Democratic Left. She also spent some time with the Workers' Party of Belgium (PTB), and had an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of life in the PTB, and see their political strategy and action. PTB and DSA were the subjects of a detailed comparison study organized by the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung. Red Star member Matt M sits down with Megan to debrief her experience in Belgium, what she learned from spending time with PTB, and what our similarities and differences can tell us about building a militant revolutionary party.

Last November, Zohran Mamdani did what many considered impossible: he won the mayor’s office of a major U.S. city as a Democratic Socialists of America candidate. And in Atlanta, Kelsea Bond recently became the first DSA member elected to the City Council. The DSA, while not an official political party, has also picked up momentum elsewhere. Over the past several months, DSA candidates or candidates aligned with the organization secured primary wins in New York, Colorado, and Washington, D.C. Two years ago, Georgia House District 42 Representative Gabriel Sanchez became the first Democratic Socialist elected to the state legislature. The gains are small but notable. So, what does this shift mean for voters, for the political system, and for the possibility of more DSA candidates rising to prominence in a battleground Southern state like Georgia? Ashik Siddique and Megan Romer, the National Co‑Chairs of the Democratic Socialists of America, join the show to discuss how the organization is defining itself in this moment, the messaging strategies they believe resonate, and the challenges of still needing the Democratic Party designation to appear on most ballots. Smaller nonprofits face distinct challenges in today’s shifting philanthropic landscape, and many are struggling to stay afloat. Hawk argues it is an affordability problem. Zohran Mamdani's winning mayoral platform was built on housing costs, rent control, free transit, daycare, and taxing the rich. Those policies poll extremely well. The word socialism polls badly. Paul Krugman's Substack draws the distinction clearly: what most Americans actually support is social democracy, a market system with progressive taxation, safety nets, and regulation to limit inequality. DSA co-chair Megan Romer put it plainly after the Colorado result, telling the Democratic establishment they had been warned. Ro Khanna weighed in immediately after the race. Half of Americans cannot meet their basic daily needs. Trump's $2.2 billion financial disclosure dropped the same week as the Colorado primary. After introducing listeners to their communities and their personal paths to organizing, Phil and Megan describe the devastation on the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Laura as DSA SWLA and allied groups like Mutual Aid Disaster Relief continue their recovery efforts despite a lack of interest from national media.  Phil discusses his experience of being displaced by the storm and the significance of Louisiana activists as innovators at the vanguard of climate struggle, and Megan explains the key lessons we can learn from DSA SWLA about organizing during a pandemic, along with the convoluted local politics behind the city of Lafayette’s refusal to accept refugees from Lake Charles in the aftermath of the police killing of 31-year-old Trayford Pellegrin on August 21.
