Jean Martin Bauer is the author of The New Breadline: Hunger and Hope in the 21st Century. It is a brilliant account of why hunger is ravaging the world and what we can do about it. In this podcast JM talks about his career at the World Food Programme, starting from his first field experience right out of college to confronting heartbreaking stories like a mother in Mauritania cooking imaginary meals for her children. He delves into the staggering global hunger crisis, the complexities of humanitarian work, role of technology in recent times and the challenges of fighting food insecurity in war-torn countries. For someone who works on the frontline, JM is hopeful that we can all make a difference in our own way to help the cause.

Bart and Jenna are rarely afraid to dive headfirst into uncharted areas of cinema, but certain movies are just too important for them to toss around in their usual subjective way. Gillo Pontecorvo's The Battle of Algiers is one such landmark work that seems irresponsible to discuss without a maximum amount of context. That's why Cinema60 invited African Studies and Decolonization scholar Christopher J. Lee to the podcast to help them unpack the history and politics of the film and the events that it depicts. In addition, Chris wanted to talk about Ousmane Sembène's Black Girl, another film from 1966 with a very different, but equally harsh, perspective on French colonialism in Africa. The two films, taken together, give a well-rounded visualization of the revolutionary ideas of political philosopher Frantz Fanon, whose thoughts got to the heart much of the social upheaval of the era. Listen as Chris gives a global backdrop to the rebellious spirit that inspired the big changes in the way people governed themselves, and in the way they made movies, in the mid-20th century.

"I had scarcely finished speaking when the enemy's battery opened fire upon us, and raked us through and through. They concentrated their fire upon us, and with their first discharge carried off Count de la Bastide, the lieutenant of my own company with whom at the moment I was speaking, and twelve grenadiers, who fell side by side in the ranks, so that my coat was covered with brains and blood. So accurate was the fire that each discharge of the cannon stretched some of my men on the ground. I suffered agonies at seeing these brave fellows perish without a chance of defending themselves, but it was absolutely necessary that they should not move from their post.” - Jean Martin de la ColonieThe battle of Schellenberg is one of the interesting stops on the Duke of Marlborough's road to Blenheim. Time was in short supply and the Grand Alliance was in a tight spot, the heights over Donauworth had to be taken, and quickly. A frontal assault was in the offing and the deadly struggle that followed almost cost Marlborough his campaign, reputation, and maybe even the war itself. Let's go back to the War of the Spanish Succession, the age of Marlborough and muskets. Let's go back to 1704 and the battle of Schellenberg!Music by DopeBoysSources Upon RequestFollow Along On Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTokAs Always - Rate/Review/SubscribeAnd Thanks For Listening!

For more details, visit the #DrGPCR Podcast Episode #71 page https://www.drgpcr.com/episode-71-with-dr-jean-martin-beaulieu ------------------------------------------- About Dr. Jean Martin Beaulieu Dr. Beaulieu received a Ph.D. in Neurological Sciences from McGill University and completed his post-doctoral training at Duke University. Prior to his recruitment Dr. Beaulieu was an associate professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier2) in the Department of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Laval University. Dr. Beaulieu's research is aimed at understanding how cellular and molecular mechanisms regulated by psychoactive drugs intersect with genetic risk factors for mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. Dr. Beaulieu has pioneered work establishing a role for Beta-arrestin signaling in the brain in vivo and has established its importance in D2 dopamine receptors (D2R) functions. These receptors belong to the super-family of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR), the major molecular target for drug development. In particular, D2R is the main pharmacological target of antipsychotic drugs prescribed for schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. Work by the Beaulieu Lab has demonstrated that mood stabilizer drugs (e.g. lithium) used for bipolar disorder therapy target signaling mechanisms regulated by dopamine receptors, thus providing a framework to understand how different drug classes can engage overlapping cellular mechanisms to exert their action. The Beaulieu group is presently investigating how cell surface express proteins can act as allosteric modulators of D2R signaling and explores the potential usefulness of beta-arrestins for the development of new pharmaceutical agents. Translational validation is important to validate findings obtained from experimental models research and bridge the gap between bench and bedside. Working in collaboration with geneticists, the Beaulieu-Lab has identified interactions between cellular mechanisms engaged by D2R and psychiatric drugs with genetic risk factors implicated in schizophrenia by large whole-genome association studies (GWAS) in humans. These investigations have led to the identification of an RNA binding protein (FXR1P) involved in the regulation of protein synthesis as a potential downstream effector of the action of mood stabilizers and other psychoactive drugs. In addition to basic research, the Beaulieu group is also actively implicated in translational research and industry collaboration to develop new drugs and drug development technology. Author Pearlie Martin Biblical Principals For Inner Healing

When we refuse to forgive others, the effects of unforgiveness with torment us. Unforgiveness is rooted in Pride and self-righteousness, because it cause us to judge others for what they did and leads us to forget what we have done. Jesus tells us if we do not forgive others, he cannot forgive us, because to do so, he would have to deny himself. Forgiveness is God's command to us and not his suggestion. When we refuse to forgive, a root of bitterness will eventually grow up in us, and now instead of being mad at the one person, we become like a tree defiling everyone around us. A bitter heart is born out of our unwillingness to forgive others. Forgiveness has nothing to do with what we want or feel, but it's an act of our obedience to the our heavenly Father. Author Pearlie Martin ask the question," If you can not forgive them for what they said or did to you, can you forgive them for being imperfect just like you. Remember it was their sin against you not your sin. But when we refuse to forgive others, it becomes our sin against them and God because we refuse to do what he says. Let it go so it don't grow into a tree of bitterness causing you to become an angry bitter person.

Today's episode is a BEST OF episode, which is a replay of a previously aired episode.  Enjoy! Today I am talking to someone who is killing it farming 1.5 acres. He is doing over $140k in sales on that 1.5 acres, supporting himself and his family in the process. Of that $140k 40% is profit. Compare that to corn and soybeans which net about $280 an acre. And he is grossing that $140k working 9 months a year and the average length work days. We aren't talking about burnout workload here. Think about that. $800 per acre versus $90000. I am happy to welcome Jean Martin Fortier, the author of The Market Gardener to the show. Jean Martin is a great example of someone who is out there maximizing efficiency and productivity on a small piece of land. His whole grow bigger, not better philosophy echoes this. Jean Martin focuses on growing biointensive and the use of appropriate technology to work with his permanent raised beds. And he designed the farm with the intent of keeping it manageable for the scale that he was at. He maximizes productivity and quality of life. For anyone that wants to get into farming, but is having trouble getting the numbers to work, this is the episode for you. This is a model that works. Come nasce nell’uomo?

What would you do if your job was to figure out, on a global scale, who doesn't have enough to eat? Or, more importantly, who had insecurity in their life specifically because of food scarcity? Just thinking about the scale of the problem blows my mind a little bit. But then, wait for it, what if you then had to also design and execute interventions that would, to a large degree, address those food security issues. Oh, and did I mention that this is a constantly evolving and changing process? This is exactly what my guest for the 130th episode of the Terms of Reference Podcast does along with the team at the World Food Programme's Vulnerability and Analysis Mapping Initiative. Jean-Martin Bauer is a Senior Analyst at WFP, where he leads the mobile VAM initiative, which involves deploying digital innovations to collect food security data in near real time. He has been on the front lines of understanding food scarcity for years and in this episode he tells us about how VAM has evolved since its paper-survey beginnings and where it will go in the future.

Jean-Martin Fortier will be one of the speakers at PV3 in March 2016. Learn more about PV3 at permaculturevoices.com/pv3. Basing his farm off of the French bio intensive market gardens JM has kept his farm small and intensive relying mostly on hand labor. He has focused on developing and following on farm systems that work and growing crops that pay. And the results have been a farm pays well. Jean-Martin's farm now generates $150,000 on 1.5 acres, with 40% of that being profit. Big numbers for a small farm. It's the $100,000 an acre that JM is associated with today. But he didn't start out making $100,000 an acre. He started out at square one, just like many of you. And as a preview for the episode, it wasn't easy. There was a lot of hard work involved in the beginning. It was that hard work and striving for constant improvement that allowed JM to arrive at the systems which he uses so profitably today. The systems which allow him to generate $100,000 off of 1 acre. But let's go back in time to Day 0 when he was just starting out. He was married, didn't have any money, he lived in a tipi, but he had a vision for the life that he wanted to live. Learn more at permaculturevoices.com/pv3

Is there a place for permaculture principles in a bio-intensive approach to successful ( and profitable) small-scale vegetable production? For more than a decade Jean-Martin and his wife have been making a living farming on 1.5 acres of land. Last year they sold for more than $140 000 in sales (with a profit margin of around 45 %) by selling freshly harvested vegetables trough their 140 member CSA and seasonal market stands. The secret of their success resides in the low-tech, high-yield methods of production they have developed at les Jardins de la Grelinette. This talk was presented live at PV2 in March 2015. Superhero Academy Podcast Jean-Martin Fortier - The Market Gardener For full notes and key points, please visit LINKSOON Summary In this podcast, Marc Coppola interviews Jean-Martin Fortier, the author of 'The Market Gardener', a successful grower's handbook for small scale organic farming. He wrote the book to give people the right tools and information on market gardening so that they too can start their own gardens. They talk about how focusing on the solution, and not on the problem, one can truly make a difference. Through permaculture, they are able to design their farm well in order to multi-function and although it is management and labor-intensive, their production is a lot more. They also talk about how people cannot do away with the economy, and focusing on small businesses and organic ways of development is their way of achieving sustainability. Jean-Martin talks about how they, as people in organic market farming, are both making money and making a difference. If we truly want to make a change and make a difference, we just have to do it and get our hands dirty. Main Questions Asked • What are you doing? [03:30] • Where exactly is your farm? [05:28] • What inspired you to start your farm and your book? Is this something you grew up doing? What made you get into market gardening? [07:42] • What are your thoughts on permaculture? [15:40] • What are the lifestyle changes somebody should adopt to begin organic farming? [28:46] • Do you have volunteers? What are they like? [34:14] • More so than your book, do you educate people personally at your site? [36:14] • Has there been any dramatic change that you've seen in food and faming over the last couple of years? [41:50] • Why are there changes on people's views in food and organic farming? [43:31] • Do you think the Internet and technology are helping you? How does it affect your practice? [44:19] • How can start farming at home? What are your thoughts about how you can make suburbia to become more sustainable? [48:10] • What role does automation play in gardening? [50:26] Powerful Quotes • "We've just basically been focusing on trying to grow better instead of growing bigger." - Jean-Martin Fortier [04:15] • "The crop that we grow comes from seed; everything we've grown from scratch. All the tools we used come from small companies and none of the fundamental inputs that we use on the farm are from an industrialized process." - Jean-Martin Fortier [12:40] • "We're making both; we're making money and we're making a difference." - Jean-Martin Fortier [13:45] • "You can expect to have a decent income and a right livelihood in farming if you know what you are doing." - Marc Coppola [30:32] • "Just clicking is not enough to really create change." - Jean-Martin Fortier [45:39] • "If we're going to change agriculture, it's going to be one farm at a time." - Jean-Martin Fortier [48:45] • "We have to get our hands dirty if we're going to change anything." - Marc Coppola [51:51] Links Mentioned Greenseed greenseed.me Contact Information for Jean-Martin Fortier themarketgardener.com amazon.com/The-Market-Gardener-Successful-Small-scale/dp/0865717656 facebook.com/marketgardenerthebook twitter.com/jm_fortier Come check out more of what we do on www.valhallamovement.com www.superheroacademy.net

Today I am talking to someone who killing it farming 1.5 acres. He is doing over $140k in sales on that 1.5 acres, supporting himself and his family in the process. Of that $140k 40% is profit. Compare that to corn and soybeans which net about $280 an acre. And he is grossing that $140k working 9 months a year and average length works days. We aren't talking about burnout workload here. Think about that. $800 per acre versus $90000. I am happy to welcome Jean Martin Fortier, the author of The Market Gardener to the show.Jean Martin is a great example of someone who is out there maximizing efficiency and productivity on a small piece of land. This is a paradigm shift. Show Notes: www.permaculturevoices.com/51

In this episode of the Red Man Laughing Podcast we sit down with the genre bending Tanya Tagaq Gillis. Unconventional in her approach to Traditional Inuit Throat Singing, Tagaq has created a name for herself as a risk taking, innovating & dynamic World talent. Her new album, Animism, is being released by Canadian label, Six Shooter Records, on Tuesday May 27th. In our conversation we talk about everything from her own Indian Residential School experience (yes, she's a survivor), her creative process & her collaborations, Carnegie Hall with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra & how her art always ties her back to the land. FROM THE LABEL - Six Shooter Records Tanya Tagaq’s music isn’t like anything you’ve heard before. Unnerving and exquisite, Tagaq’s unique vocal expression may be rooted in Inuit throat singing but her music as much to do with electronica, industrial and metal influences as it does with traditional culture. This Inuk punk is known for delivering fearsome, elemental performances that are visceral and physical, heaving and breathing and alive. Her shows draw incredulous response from worldwide audiences, and Tagaq’s tours tend to jump back and forth over the map of the world. From a Mexican EDM festival to the Canadian High Commission in London, UK, her music and performances transcend language. Tagaq makes musical friends and collaborators with an array of like-minded talents: opera singers, avant-garde violin composers, experimental DJs, all cutting edge and challenging. Tanya’s albums make for complex listening, but her string of Juno nominations attests to her ability to make difficult music speak a universal tongue. Animism, the new album, was produced by west coast shape-shifter Jesse Zubot (Dan Mangan, Fond of Tigers). The record features Michael Red (Low Indigo), a sound sampler and DJ whose wild northern field recordings often serve as Tagaq’s de facto backing band, percussionist Jean Martin and Spanish opera singer Anna Pardo Canedo.   As always, thanks for listening.
