This week, we're going Dutch… Well, sort of. The original spec script describes it as a “Hitchock-ian style thriller with black humor.” However, much like the titular town, in the words of its lead character Nancy Vangergroot, this movie is “like carbon dioxide. It's so sleepy and comfortable, and you won't even know you're suffocating.” It's Mimi Cave's Holland. TGIF Film Buffers – AKAPAD dives into Holland (2025) today, the second film from Mimi Cave. With his love for spoilers, Peter explores how to classify this film—less of a psychological thriller and more of a mystery-comedy farce. When the story pivots, the audience buys in, a feat not easily achieved from a filmmaking standpoint.

A suspense thriller, Mimi Cave's HOLLAND is a little slow to start but worth investing in the third act. With Nicole Kidman at the helm, you would think this would've gotten a theatrical release, but it went straight to Prime Video. Let's talk about it...

Director Austin Peters discusses his new film, Skincare, with fellow Director Mimi Cave in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses striving for a more authentic LA than the Hollywood image, creating something within the “Sunshine Noir” genre and working with Elizabeth Banks to discover her character. The film tells the story of skincare mogul Hope Goldman, whose business is thrown off the rails when a rival beauty parlor arrives in her neighborhood. With the help of her friend, Jordan, she seeks to uncover the person intent on ruining both her business and her reputation. This week's guest is Laura Zempel, an award-winning editor for film & TV based in Los Angeles. I invited to Laura to the podcast after binge-watching the series Beef on Netflix earlier this year and being really impressed with everything about that show, but particularly the editing and how it balances the modulating tone and storylines so deftly. Laura was nominated for an Emmy for her work on that show, and not for the first time, she previously won for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series in Euphoria. She also worked on Josephine Decker's film The Sky is Everywhere and the Duplass brothers' show Room 104. Most recently she edited two episodes of the new Apple TV+ series Lessons in Chemistry, starring Brie Larson. The first three episodes are available to watch as of today. We talk about how she developed an interest in editing, her experience of internships and assisting, including etiquette and how to read a room, being obsessive with music and making playlists for her projects, editing an actors' performance, staying emotionally engaged with the work, Avid being her first language and trusting the process. Movie Meltdown - Episode 581 (For our Patreon "Horror Club") This episode we're discussing Fresh, the 2022 film directed by Mimi Cave and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan. And as we realize it's best if people just stay away from each other, we also mention… A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Baby, cotton candy grapes, The Regal Beagle, mismatching periods of singlehood, mean letters from Richard Marx, Cry Baby, pancakes in a paper bag, you're giving ghouls a bad name, internet art, tons of overtones, nothing tops the bats, a normal rom-com, that grows back, the audacity of you… just being you, ordering meat, vast underground network, guys are gross, ketchup-flavor Doritos, Freddy Krueger, Comin' at Ya!, a cool dungeon, got off on a technicality, a baby drop box, they found a way to make it legal, spaghetti westerns and micro-aggressive gross phases that women get all the time. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for the 2022 movie "Fresh", so go watch it before you listen. And it's best if you don't know what's going to happen, so if you haven't seen it… just go in blind - it's so much better. “If I didn't know this is going to end horribly… I would totally want you two to get together.”
Sometimes a film gets a bit of buzz simply because of its outrageous premise. But that doesn't mean the film doesn't work. The new Hulu original, FRESH (2022), is most certainly one of those bizarre films that seems to be one thing but turns into something completely different than one would think. Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is a twenty-something that just can't seem to find love. She starts using dating apps and has many blind dates but most turn out to be completely awful. Then one day while she's grocery shopping, she meets Steve (Sebastian Stan) who seems to be everything she's ever wanted in a guy. After hitting it off quite well, the two head to his vacation home. While enjoying their time together, something drastic happens that will change her life. The film is directed by Mimi Cave form a script by Lauryn Kahn. Besides starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan, the film's cast includes Jonica T. Gibbs and Charlotte Le Bon. Dark Discussions takes a look at this generally positively reviewed film and gives their thoughts.
Flick ford is joined by guest critics Emma Westwood and Sally Christie for a horror double. They tuck into Mimi Cave's dating app horror FRESH and then they journey into Alex Garland's rural horror MEN.
Modern dating! Unusual appetite! unsettling relationship! This week the boys devour Mimi Cave's,"Fresh"!! A love story with a dark twist, is the way I'd describe the plot without giving much away. It's best to know very little about this horror comedy. "Fresh" breaks many troupes but can it be something new and original or be one long platitude? Hope you're hungry for a piping hot review because this week, we're taking a big bite of Hulu's Fresh! Directed by Mimi Cave and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan (aka The Winter Soldier from the MCU), Fresh is a twisted take on a classic meet-cute rom-com. It's a classic story of a lonely woman fed up with dating who happens to meet a charming, handsome man, they hit it off, then the charming man [REDACTED]. Does Fresh live up to the hype or is it only getting one star on Yelp? Jeff and Mike talk about a movie everyone is talking about. Of course we're referring to the Hulu-exclusive FRESH, the directorial debut film of Mimi Cave co-starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar Jones. Maddie returns to help Caitlin cover 2022's Fresh. We dig into the movie itself and joke about its need for larger-bodied characters (as Lizzo famously said, "No, I'm not a snack at all; look, baby, I'm a whole damn meal"). We both really loved this one. It's looking like a leader for top horror movies of 2022, and we couldn't be happier to have ol' Seb Stan on the weirdo train. Speaking of weirdos, we reveal our alarming amount of cannibal knowledge, thanks in no small part to Last Podcast on the Left. Bon appetit!

Finally, we continue our J-horror series and discuss the dial up internet classic, PULSE. We also discuss the Oscars (before having seen them), Wet Hot American Summer, and the importance of butts. This episode we review the new horror/comedy Fresh. Fresh is a 2022 American comedy thriller film directed by Mimi Cave, in her directorial debut, from a screenplay by Lauryn Kahn. It stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan. The film is a co-production between Legendary Pictures and Hyperobject Industries; Adam McKay produced the film alongside Kevin J. Messick and Maeve Cullinane. The plot follows a young woman who starts dating a charming man, only to discover his horrifying true nature.
WoHos!Mac came to town to have lunch and so we had to record a bonus mini on FRESH, the best advertisement for veganism I have seen lately! Spoilers abound, so if you haven't seen FRESH yet, I'd encourage you to do so. We'll be here when you get back.We explore the pretty much successful feminist themes and bemoan some of the less successful intersectional feminist themes in the film. There's a lot to celebrate here, and we are not just talking about Sebastian Stan's dance break! While it is not a perfect film, it got under our skin and it was lovely to discuss. We hope you will listen and enjoy. Is Mom's theory about Ann's backstory completely wackadoo? Devin & James are serving up a treat in the DEN OF CIN. It's an unlikely and weird double feature of CANNIBAL FILMS! First we get into Paul Bartel's 1982 cult comedy EATING RAOUL, starring Bartel, his longtime collaborator Mary Woronov, and Robert Beltran in the title dish... er, we mean role. Then we dive into a very recent film for a change, the 2022 Hulu "meat cute", FRESH. Directed by Mimi Cave, starring the excellent Daisy Edgar-Jones, as well as Sebastian Stan in a role sure to make your skin crawl (and braise, broil, or roast). All this, plus a huge rant about the current state of the Academy Awards Ceremony. We just couldn't fit any more on the plate! Writer Lauryn Kahn grew up loving horror movies so she was very excited for the chance to actually make one of her own. When she was looking for inspiration, a friend who had previously written a horror film said that she based the script around “the scariest thing” possible for her. That gave Kahn the idea to write her story from the female perspective in the world of dating while also addressing the fears that women deal with everyday like something so seemingly mundane like walking to their car in a parking lot past dark. She eventually teamed up with director Mimi Cave, who saw the project as an allegory about how you actually leave pieces of yourself behind after getting out of a toxic relationship. The film centers around a woman named Noa, who is looking for love but fed up with the dating scene until she becomes instantly smitten with a charming doctor named Steve, who she meets at a grocery store one night. Noa soon discovers that what's lurking behind Steve's sterling smile is something far more sinister than she could ever possibly imagine…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to crank up the Peter Cetera and get ready for a carnivorous dinner as we review the 2022 Hulu original “Fresh”….
"Fresh" had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on opening night in the Midnight Section for its terrifying look at the modern-dating scene with a twist that occurs about one-third of the way into the film.
