This week Sam, Mel, Grae, and I (Spellcheck) all crammed into the pod office to talk about whatever's been filling our brains for the last few weeks. We had our coffee and snacks and just had a regular (for us) conversation. Once or twice a month, we'll be dropping an episode of just our ADHD braindumps. After existing every day in the world, like we all must, sometimes we just want to to let our minds go to autopilot, and we want you all to be a part of it. Topics range from new hobbies, Spartan races, vultures, being a kid again, and doing the thing that makes you happy. We love you guys. Let's hang out.
Step into a parallel universe with our guest this week, where Spellcheck is British and went to university to study the history of fashion (which, in reality, is something Spellcheck genuinely wanted to do). A certain writer for the podcast was shocked more than a few times. The similarities are numerous. Jessie (ghostsintime) a person of the English persuasion, is an absolute doll. Sweet and polite, knowledgeable about her subject, she was a joy to chat with. The Mavens are smitten. Her Instagram account is filled with beauty-related historical posts and reels, some of which lean heavily toward the bizarre. We don't know about you, but we've never considered adding a raw meat mask to our nighttime skincare routine. Jessie is younger than everyone on the Mothball team, and we all felt it when the topic of 90s fashion came up. Grae pops up momentarily to defend the voluntary taking of cold showers. Barbies, the Spice Girls, and the "Goth to History" pipeline all make an appearance. If you haven't already, Jessie recommends watching The Love Witch (2016) as soon as humanly possible.
Last week the Mavens had a grand ol' time with @fare11kat, a previous guest that the Mothball team adopted by force. Lady Erin of the Almost-Hairless Cats is a dashing young woman with hair of fire and a ridiculous streak of good luck. But her latest episode seemed different. Truncated, somehow... Where did the Curio Corner go? During the 100th episode, Sam and Mel announced that we would be trying out a new format for the show. Interviews will still come out on Mondays. But the Curio Corner will be its own episode, a treat for the weekend, released on Thursdays. With this being the maiden voyage of said experiment, the Mavens are joined by Grae (because he was already in Sam's basement) to mull over the existence of luck and chat about the most recent estate sale.
Erin Pipgras, perhaps better known as fare11kat on Instagram, has been a guest on the show before (episode 39, if you're curious about our first encounter with her). Obviously we all fell madly in love with each other, but in a sweary, meme fueled sort of way. Erin has become a staple in every day conversation for the Mothball team, and is frequently asked to petition the universe on our behalf. On top of being perhaps the luckiest human in Wisconsin, she also has the distinct honor of igniting a new porcine passion in Spellcheck. Hear tell of the mighty pig of fortune and how luck isn't really luck. Melissa and Sam talk shop and Sam used the word "gooses" about half way through the interview. This editor threw up slightly. Fortunately, we're all still friends.
We know you have questions. Where have you been? Is the podcast still a thing? Are you still alive!? The answers, in order: The Mavens are running a wildly successful estate sale business. Absolutely the podcast is still a thing. The Mothball universe is expanding, so schedules are shifting. We're all settling into a new routine. And yes, we're alive and thriving. The last three months have been chaotic, but in the best way. The estate sale company is booming. Grae moved to Idaho (10 points if you guess where he's currently living). Sam and Melissa are learning and growing and it's just fantabulous. Today, these two dish on all the weird and wonderful behind the scenes of the most recent estate sales, explain the new format for the podcast, and ponder why they both seem to injure themselves at every single sale house. So if you've been missing us, never fear! We aren't going anywhere.
Mandy Arnold is a long time friend of the pod and all around glorious human. She has now shifted from regular podcast listener to a part of the foundational mythology of the Mothball Prophecies. She was LITERALLY one of the very first people to follow the pod, become a patron, and now is stuck with all of us as friends for the rest of her days. The prodigal daughter returned to her homeland, from that far off land of holly and wood, to wine and dine with the Mavens and hit the latest Mothball estate sale. She regales us with tales of her possibly problematic predilection for pyrex and volumes of vintage Halloween. Her to-DIE-for wardrobe and style are enthusiastically discussed, as is only right for such an adorable creature. And, as for the Estate Sale Walkthrough goes, she was a real champ. Cheers to Mandy, for making the trip to hang out with us and for wearing that damn egg shirt to dinner. A while back, Sam did some mini-interviews with some Mothball listeners. Alex Di Giovanni was one of those interviewees, and we just had to have him back for a full episode! Alex started reselling as a teen, but he didn't start collecting until his early 20s; it's a bit backwards from most people and we LOVE IT. For his personal collection, Alex loves signs and American license plates. In his professional life, he's an avian ecologist, with a full-blown master's degree. This dude knows his birds. He drops some sweet ontological knowledge on us in between blowing Spellcheck's mind with the history of porcelain license plates and needing out with Sam over classic signage. Bird-related felonies are discussed, along with a mutual love of the dearly departed Dodo. Sam deserves a medal for not making the hundreds of bird puns she was probably dying to make. They would have flown right over Spellcheck's head, anyway. Tony Musso, freelance journalist and weekly columnist at the Poughkeepsie Journal, joins the Radio Rotary team for a discussion of his latest book, Mothball Fleet on the Hudson: The Post-World War II National Defense Reserve. Many residents and visitors crossing the Hudson on the Bear Mountain Bridge in the 1950s or 1960s have seen the flotilla of warships lined up along the river and wondered what they were there for. Musso, the principal chronicler of Hudson Valley historical sites, tells the story in his new book. Many listeners are likely to be familiar with his earlier 3-volume series, “Hidden Treasures of the Hudson Valley,” his regular “Dateline” columns in Gannett newspapers, his tours of historic sites, and his frequent appearances as a speaker on historical topics. Most of these will be discussed in this wide-ranging interview. We recently recorded the 100th episode. But because all that frivolity took up so many hours, we weren't able to cover everything we wanted to talk about during the recording. To correct this, Grae and Sam sit down to expand, in a bit more detail, on the future of the podcast. Additionally, Sam gives a blow for blow account of the first Mothball estate sale at the Eleanor house, and Grae explains the more mysterious parts of what his job actually entails. Warning for anyone legally considered an adult: you will feel your age with this episode. Lo, the passage of time.
Next week's episode is all about the future of the podcast, where we're all headed, and what you, as listeners, can expect. For a study in opposites, the 99th episode is none of those things. This week, we are releasing an episode that has never seen the light of day, an episode that was recorded back in 2020 shortly after quarantine ended. People were getting back to a new version of normal while Jill and Sam recorded a pre-ADHD diagnosis cornucopia of unfiltered thoughts. They literally sat in the car, in a parking lot, and pinged off eachother for almost an hour. The intro originally had different music, the Estate Sale Walkthrough is a mere fetus, and there is no Curio Corner whatsoever. But in the midst of the fumbles and technical issues, you can see the origin of the podcast you know today. Cheers to humble beginnings and fruitful futures. The cat has officially been released from the bag: Mothball Estate Sales has manifested itself at last, when absolutely no one was expecting it. The idea of this company has been a dream for longer than the podcast, believe it or not, and is currently unfolding in the most unlikely way imaginable. Sam is joined by Grae this week to discuss the origins of the company, his steadfast refusal to bullshit anyone, and the future of the Mothball universe. Grae conveniently edited out the part where he admits that he hates dipping fries into frosties. Please send all thoughts and opinions on said topic to the official Mothball Prophecies website. South Africa's energy woes have intensified and Etienne Rübbers, co-founder of Renew-e, a developer of renewable energy and gas projects has suggested the government mothball two of South32's smelters to provide headroom to work on electricity supply. Business Day TV unpacked the idea with Renew-e's Etienne Rübbers for more detail.
Being a Patreon member comes with its own set of perks. Extra episodes are one of those. But this episode is too cool and has sat for too long, so we've decided to set it free! Enjoy! Here at Mothball headquarters, we're always brainstorming new and weird ideas to keep you monsters entertained. You're a ravenous lot, and we love you for it. To answer your question, "How much do you love us?" we've cooked up a new treat. Every month, for our Patreon members only, The Mothball Prophecies will release a full-length, hyper-specific Curio Corner. Each bonus episode will focus on an iconic place or object. We're talking about the crown jewels of the vintage world; subjects that are just too vast for a regular Curio Corner. To start off this new series, we're taking a mental trip to a celebrated California hotel. The Madonna Inn is legendary for its kitschy decor and unrivaled gift shop. If you're looking for new glassware to collect, the Inn's signature goblets are to die for. Grab your drink of choice and get cozy because we're about to plunge headlong into the most glamorous hotel this side of the Mississippi. Hardly an honorary Maven at this point, but a truly integral part of the Mothball team, Melissa hangs out with Sam this week to interview sweet-as-pie duo Elizabeth Sweigart and Ricky Saetta of The Times Vintage in Greenport, New York. The former is the proprietor of the shop and the latter, is a skilled carpenter. The carpenter, it just so happens, is responsible for all of the jaw-dropping woodwork within the shop itself. Elizabeth and Ricky are a vintage power couple (our words, not theirs), out to spread peace, love, and thrift to the masses. We love interviewing couples, especially ones like these two: so affectionate and loving, it almost makes you blush. Sit tight for a cozy collaboration of creatives, an adorable love story, and Sam making weird apologies to the pod's namesake. Moral of the story? Trust your gut. It's probably right. Health New Zealand has told Hutt Hospital there is no reason for it to mothball its earthquake-prone tower block in the short term. The Hutt District Health Board has released advice it's received on the quake-prone building that houses wards, maternity and vital radiology services. Health NZ told the DHB last month that it should not make any hasty decisions about closing the Heretaunga Block, saying the risk to occupants over the next one to two years is considered low and there is no reason not to keep using it in the short term. Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry spoke to Susie Ferguson.
Everyone on the Mothball team grew up, to some extent, in the 90s, which means we all have some weird attachments to certain toys. That being said, this week's guests came in on a flaming chariot of Cosmic Brownies and Kool-aid to shower us with nostalgia. Laura and Jeannine of Shiny Brite Doggo are a couple of fabulous millennials who are paving the way for others of that ilk who refuse to let go of our childhoods. 90s toys and vintage Halloween are their favorite items to find, and the joy doesn't stop there. These two share their estate sale and secondhand store expeditions on their YouTube channel, where they throw down thrifting tips, info on identification, and the general aura of happiness they both emit. This episode is co-hosted by Spellcheck, so of course, there's a weird family story involved. Make it to the Curio Corner for some game instruction and Sam's haunting rendition of a Michael Bolton classic. It's been a long, strange road following the birth of glass manufacturing in the United States. We've met some weird characters over the past few episodes and this week will be no different. Though, in place of eccentric producers, we get a laundry list of laws and practices that will cock even the most discerning of eyebrows. And because Jill is off galavanting with her children again (she really is the epitome of a hardcore soccer mom), Sam has to make due with the editors of the podcast, Spellcheck, and Grae. For a fun drinking game: take a shot every time someone says windows. You might pass out before the episode is done, but we'll all be having a good time.
Mothball Miscellaneous is a series on the Mothball Prophecies all about American manufacturing and how to find and identify possible collectables. This week Sam nerds out with Melissa Watson, everyone's favorite leather worker. These two marvelous ladies go over how glass making came to the United States (colonies of Great Britain at the time), some of the big players at the time, and how serious glass used to be. Melissa confesses that she didn't find this subject interesting at first, but was pleasantly surprised upon closer inspection. So if you're tilting your head at "American Made Glass" and thinking of skipping this episode, pull up a chair; you're about to learn something. Also, please remember to support your local ecosystem by not chopping down and burning all available trees for your business.
Raise your hand if you absolutely loved listening to Megan Powell of Goods Resurrected (https://www.themothballprophecies.com/episodes/vcmu7fdpg8j8axrf6x8g2fmp93l0ez (Ep 36)) and have been silently screaming at Sam and Jill to bring her back. Everyone? That's how we feel too. So here she is: Megan hops back on the Mothball train with tales of her newest venture. Last year you may remember Megan talking about living the ultimate dream of quitting her job to resell full time. Are you still jealous? Megan has been expanding her portfolio this past year from reseller and vintage genius to coaching others. On top of dropping some more tried and true tricks for reselling, she also gives us some words of wisdom about allowing yourself to do the things that make you happy. There's a common thread with a lot of interviews on the show of the misfit finally finding their people. Almost every guest has spoken about their moment of realization, the epiphany that tears down the wall of insecurity, that shows them they are not an outcast. We've all been there. But if your moment hasn't come yet, then let this episode be your sign from the universe that you found your people. And those people probably carry around keychain black lights every time they go to a thrift store. Not mentioning any names here. Sam. It's Sam. We're talking about Sam. The Mothball Prophecies fully endorses the urge to spend hours, if not days, researching every aspect of a particular niche subject until you pass out on your laptop from lack of sleep. In fact, we tend to encourage it. But with Mothball Miscellaneous, we do the hard part and you get to relax. Reap the rewards of our labor. This month's installment is all about Sunbeam Appliances, and boy howdy, this company is way more ridiculous than you thought. Honestly, 100% of the names in this episode are true. Strap in kids and be careful if you're sipping something while listening; it might end up shooting through your nose. https://www.themothballprophecies.com/
Winter is upon us, and with that come a multitude of holidays. Thanksgiving for the Americans, Christmas for some, Hanukkah for others, Yule or a little Winter Solstice maybe? Whatever you celebrate this time of year, most of us have family traditions that we hold near and dear. On this week's intimate episode we get the full rundown of the Christmas customs of our most esteemed hostesses Samantha and Jill-iffer (most definitely not her real name but a fancier, Christmas version). The Mavens saunter down memory lane recounting the Christmases of their childhoods and those first holidays after marriage. Instead of a separate Curio Corner this time, Sam and Jill dive into the histories of electric tree lights and nutcrackers mid-episode. Get your cocoa or your Bailey's or whatever you drink (peppermint tea for a certain copywriter), watch the snowfall and get cozy while you listen. The MothGhouls are here for the best time of year with a Spoopy Season Special! Sam and Jill, joined by Spellcheck, tell three creepy tales of haunted items. It might be a joke among some collectors, but accidentally bringing home a ghost or two in that cool old cigar box isn't something to fool around with. We are all, therefore, quite lucky that none of these items can possibly come home with you. But you certainly can go to them. Jill adamantly warns us not to sit in it, but you can go see the Busby Stoop Death chair in Thirsk. Spellcheck chatters excitedly about a literal axe murder from the 1890s and the house where it happened in Massachusetts. And Sam regales us with tales of an actual haunted doll all the way down in Key West. Listen whenever you wish, but the MothGhouls think this episode is best enjoyed by candlelight. Preferably while home alone. Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Tahlia: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thank you so much for providing such a truly life changing resource! I'm hoping you can help point me in the right direction, I looked through previous podcasts and I don't believe you've ever spoken about idiopathic hypersomnia before. I had to laugh when I asked my sleep specialist who'd just diagnosed me with it what it meant and he said 'excessive daytime sleepiness with no known cause'. He was sure the other specialists I had been referred to would find an underlying chronic condition that would explain this and my other chronic fatigue symptoms but nobody did. Over the years I've managed to improve my symptoms and come off all medications (including modafinil which was specifically prescribed for the hypersomnia, to keep me alert during the day) and I've come a long way but I haven't seen any further improvement for quite some time. I'll never stop learning and growing but my symptoms currently have far too big an impact on how I spend my time and I was wondering if you might have come across this disorder before or have any information to share about it? A huge thank you in advance for taking time out of your life to answer this and all the other questions you get asked! Anonymous: Hello Dr. Cabral! Thank you for answering our questions in your HouseCalls every weekend and for providing the IHP health coaching courses! You have positively changed my life. What causes a person to smell like mothballs? I encountered a man at the grocery store who overwhelmingly smelled like mothballs. I could smell him from 15 feet away. I also noticed one of my older relatives smelled like mothballs when they talked to me at the end of the evening after they had been quietly watching tv and not talking or opening their mouth for an hour.nnI think both people had mothball breath. Is there also mothball body odor and does it have a different cause? Thank you! Anonymous Eve: Hello I had COVID in February 2021, I had it very very bad after 4 days I lost my sense of smell and taste. Very strange experience. I counted and on my 29th day I started to smell little and taste little but would still be off every other day. Now we are in July 2021 and since July 12th Everything I mean everything I smell is either gasoline, nail polish remover or bleach like. When I step outside to take a breath of fresh air in its like nail polish remover, fresh grass being cut outside is a potent polish remover smell. I can not eat garlic, onions or ginger without vomiting because it tastes like bleach. Cucumbers, spinach, green beans, I can write a list of almost all the veggies and fruits that taste and smell like bleach for me. Toothpaste I have switched to 4 different kinds and it's the worst of it all, makes me nauseous of it all. Even water, I can smell my water now when I shower or wash dishes. I feel like I'm washing my dishes with gasoline like toxic smell water. What do you recommend or believe would help? It's hard to find with to eat and keep my health and nutrition up. I'm 32, female healthy. Thank you Angela: Dear Dr. Cabral, You mention the importance of eating/sleeping with the sun to help with digestion and sleep. However, what do people in Alaska do when the have endless daylight or minimal daylight periods? What about people who work graveyard shifts? Another example of altered schedule is in Europe they tend to eat dinner and sleep much later than Americans. I know many European countries take an afternoon siesta, could that be their secret? They seem much healthier than Americans in general. Mahalo, Angela Evan: How long does H pylori normally take to get rid of when treating naturally? Is it ok to have some gluten and alcohol during treatment? Also do you typically look for h pylori numbers to be low or be zero? Gabriel: Hi Dr. Cabral, I was enjoying your podcast with Organic Olivia when a comment about circulation sparked this question. I am a 25 year old woman who eats clean and exercises a few times a week (though it could be more consistent). In the past few years I've noticed issues with my circulation. For example, lifting an arm away from my body for more than 10 seconds is uncomfortable and if I sit in a certain position for a while my leg will start to tingle. Whenever I get my blood pressure tested the dr comments that it is low but 'healthy' (100/62, 99/61, 90/50 etc.). I have brain fog daily and was diagnosed with ADD a few years back but have had attention issues since I was a child. I do not take ADD medication as the side effects aren't worth it for me. Your comment about bad circulation prohibiting blood from reaching the brain struck me as I have family history of dementia. What can I do to improve my circulation to make my limbs for comfortable and hopefully improve brain function? I appreciate your help and love the podcast! Millennials Really Can Make New Friends is the unofficial subtitle of this week's episode. Jerrica Yasumura is a home decor reseller. Her personal collection leans heavy into the kitschy side of the '60s and '70s, and really, what could be more Mothball than that? She currently has a fabulous booth set up at a local Des Moines antique mall, The Picker Knows Antiques & Collectibles. Originally Jerrica tried reselling vintage clothing. Unfortunately, she found it almost impossible to find a good selection of cute clothes that were size-inclusive. That's when she started focusing on home decor instead. She really gets to put her skills of fashion retailer know how to good use while staging all her amazing finds. The free gift with purchase in this episode is all the garden nerding that starts off the interview, and the battle between Jill's husband and her ever-growing collection. Quote for the week: Good vintage should find good people. Well said. Dr. Clarence Lusane, Author, professor, Activist and Dr. Gerald Horne, Professor of History at the University of Houston, TX, author, historian, and researcher join us to discuss this week's stories. China argues that the US is turning the issue of democracy into a strategic weapon and that their plan will be disrupted by the contradictions of their non democratic autocratic allies. They also discuss the need to mothball the US drone policies and the Israel Palestine crisis.
An interview for this week was done and ready to be sent to the editor. Everything was moving along as usual but then: Technical difficulties. The bad kind. The file was corrupted and the audio was totally useless. The Mothball team has been lucky thus far in that this sort of thing hasn't happened before. So after the dust from hurricane Sam settled, everyone took a deep breath and the pod team decided to record an emergency episode. Somehow everything came together among the frantic madness. With the help of Melissa Daw, the coolest lady we know, a "catch up with the pod" type episode was thrown together. The trio go over yet unheard pod history, how everyone met everyone else, at some point Jill becomes Moses, it's all very chaotic. Some listener questions are answered before a brutal Estate Sale Walkthrough not written by Sam. This week is weird, but really that's why all of you still listen. The Mothballs want to form a coven and Mandy, this week's interviewee, will be the Supreme. This lady's got the market on maximalism cornered. Her house is to die for, and we mean that in the most diabolical way possible. She's achieved the level of kitsch only seen on the covers of dirty pulp fiction. Come closer and we can all roll around in her bedazzled, tasseled, crushed velvet madhouse and never wake up from the fever dream. She truly is a woman meant to be part of the Mothball family. The theme of this week's episode, or perhaps the after-school special warning, is when collectors get together to talk collecting, they will get new ideas. New ideas mean you're going to need more space for all the new collections you're about to collect. Because when you hear about a cool collectible that you don't already collect, you must start collecting it. Right? Basically: we're all borderline hoarders who are only kept in check for the sake of aesthetics. All the mid-century madness falling out of this lady is either a miracle or straight-up witchcraft. Probably witchcraft. Thanks to a particularly aggressive estate sale walkthrough, you're going to want to binge some Bewitched. And maybe put up a Ben Cooper mask gallery wall... intro and Outro Music: Down the Rabbit Hole by myuu Source: https://soundcloud.com/myuu/down-the-rabbit-hole License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Get music free for a link from https://starfrosch.com Edited by: Grae Copyediting by: Spell Check
This week on The Best of Car Talk, Jim thought he had a disaster on his hands after he left his gas cap off during a rain storm, but his pal came to the rescue by pouring mothballs into the gas tank. Can Tom and Ray give any explanation for why the mothballs got Jim's truck running? Meanwhile, Ray's got a theory about Heather's Jeep's popping noise that may win points for creativity and bogosity. Also, Patrick hopes the guys can help him design the perfect soapbox derby car; Ann needs assurance that putting a new engine in her beloved Fuego isn't the most ridiculous idea ever; and has one of our listeners identified the true scent of a man? All this and more, this week on The Best of Car Talk.

Shrek and Donkey. Thelma and Louise. Jay and Silent Bob. What do all these platonic love birds have in common? One is boisterous and confident, loud and in your face, walks the walk and talks the talk. The other? A little more reserved. A bit more enigmatic. The Shrek's of the world tend to play their cards a little closer to the chest. By this time you all know Sam is a Jay, right down to her core. Today's long awaited guest is her very own Silent Bob: Give it up for Ms. Jill Huffman, the sometimes placid, always practical filling in this strange podcast sandwich we call The Mothball Prophecies. Many of you may feel that you don't know Jill as well as you know Sam. This Interview will be changing that. Jill walks us through her military brat upbringing, around her Pyrex passion, and over to all of her favorite pieces. And just like when Sam was interviewed, the pod has a guest host to "fill in" for Jill. Melissa Daw, fan favorite and owner of Melco Leather, sits in with the Mavens for an enlightening interview. Grab your tissues for the Estate Walkthrough, this week's sale will get you right in the feels. Lots of the interviews we do here on The Mothball Prophecies involve some level of envy for the Mavens and listeners alike. Actually, it would be more accurate to say ALL the interviews. All the Mothball guests have amazing stories and collections you can't help but drool over. Dave and Brittany Rademacher, however, have inspired a new level of yearning that borders on deranged. These two bought a house featured on the one and only Cheap Old Houses! Yes, yes, and Yes. We know. And this gorgeous old stunner could not have fallen into better hands. Listen to Jill and Sam salivate over descriptions of "original" this and "restored, like new" that. Did someone die there? Brittany isn't telling. Art deco light fixtures play a heavy role here as well. After you listen, the pod wants to know: Are you on Jill's side? Does it drive you crazy when someone refuses to hire a professional? Or are your feet firmly planted in the ground with Sam "I can do that myself" Mashburn? Get in loser, we're going to Home Depot.
Today's guest is someone we all know, and someone who's collection we already know a little bit about. Friends of the pod have been asking for this episode for a while now. So finally, by popular request (and just for the fun of it), the Mavens are interviewing Sam Mashburn! Sam goes deep into her small-town upbringing and how it's influenced her current collecting. She introduces us to Templeton, one of her many misfit antiques, walks us through her estate sale hunting strategies, and lets us take a peek at her bathroom's gallery wall. But wait... How does one interview one's self? Not to fear, a guest co-host has been invited into the inner sanctum (Sam's living room) to assist Jill with all the hosty parts. Who is it? Any guesses? Join us with the La Croix flavor of your choice to find out. It remains focused on the lesser-knowns, showing that on an avenue near you there are many ace DJ's and artists who can "see red" (meaning they can hear and recognise *quality* music), just like you can. You don't need to consult a glossy music magazine or hit up a trending music publication to find out what is worth listening to. If you are truly into underground music, you only need to dig for yourself and feed off the underground DJ's/labels/people around you who have got that mad passion, taste and burning desire to curate boss mixtapes and releases. ENTER GEORGE HYSTERIC! The Melbourne(-and-bred) DJ, music collector and Mothball Record label boss has blown many people away (including us and our mates) with his crazily coherent selections of Italo, disco, synthpop, synthwave, new wave and other interesting oddball variants of music (largely from 20+ years ago). He has got a seriously strong mixing style tailored for segueing old, loosely-timed eclectic music - a technical artform in itself that is very tough to master! George is also an excellent producer, who has officially released only a fraction of his edit works and also has some top materials of his own released on labels like Banoffee Pies, Bordello A Parigi, Public Possession and Edits Du Plaisir among others including his own label. This exclusive mix is expertly crafted. Be excited. PS. This is available to download in lossless full-res .aiff format - we thought we'd do this because it is the 100th episode. We thank George, the other contributors and of course YOU for bothering to listen. "This mix was something of a challenge because I hadn’t recorded a ‘pure’ Italo-disco mix in quite some years and had even moved away from it a bit, as although I love and always will love the genre, I had struggled to find fresh Italo tracks that appealed to me personally. This gave me the time to explore and DJ in other genres that maybe I hadn’t given enough time to before. It’s possible to also see this perhaps in the development and progression of Mothball Record moving away from a strictly Italo-disco label, with some synthwave releases and even one of 90s rave covers during 2017. The heart of Mothball will always be in Italo however, and there are some nice releases planned for 2018. Over the past few months I invested some time digging through Italian label catalogs on discogs looking for (mostly cheap) Italo records I didn’t previously know... and found quite a few nice surprises. As a result I think I was able to make a pure Italo-disco mix almost entirely free of “the hits”. I didn't have so much time to edit or produce much lately because I was busy with DJ work and stuff for the label, mostly graphic design and audio restoration. However, I will have a few things out early 2018 - an EP on Bahnsteig 23 and a 7" on a new label, which will feature more downtempo and sample-based stuff. Keep a look out for new the releases and thank you for listening!" It's 10:20 and Paul James is sounding chirpy and enthusiastic. We get the "God Only Knows" Thameside Radio 90.2 remix (I remember buying the Beach Boys instrumental album he used at Beggars Banquet in Ealing. Did you know that the remains of Beggars Banquet is thriving as Banquet Records in Kingston now and doing well putting on gigs and a roaring trade in new vinyl.) We hear the the 12" of "Ever So Lonely" by Monsoon. The singer, Sheila Chandra, was the only Asian artist to have mainstream chart success in the 1980s (says Wikipedia). We also get "Happy Birthday Sweet 16" by Clive Pig and the Hopeful Chinamen. They don't make records like that anymore. Paul chats with Hilly and mentions a 2nd Division match between Chelsea and Crystal Palace! Also QPR are playing on their Astroturf pitch. We discover that Radio Caroline were meant to have come back on air the day before. But that didn't happen. I think offshore pirates had pretty much finished by this stage. There are trails for the live link with Uptown Radio later in the day. But sadly Ian the Engineer tells us that the link with Uptown won't work. I do remember a successful link up - so maybe it gets fixed - keep listening. The picture is of an "FB" (Fire Brigade) padlock. This was the standard padlock used to secure all London tower blocks. Of course having the right key meant you could access the roof to put up transmitters and aerials. Mentions for Ruth, Jane; Steve Scribbler; Mike of Chalfont; Brian of Amersham ; Timothy in Beaconsfield telling Dave to get a haircut; Dave Booth; The Mystics; The Cardinal of Walton on Thames; Kingston Polytechnic; Ansell for Andrew ; Alexandra for her granny ; Andrew Simpson; Mothball for Justin;

Paul James says "goodbye" to Thameside Radio for the next 3 months as he is going to work on "The Voice of Peace" in Israel. Bob plays songs from a demo tape by the Mystics who use "a lot of new electronic equipment" to quote Bob. There aren't many demos that have stuck in my mind since the early 80's - but this is one of them. The first track starts 48 minutes in, the second is 1h30m, third at 1h59m. Band members include Dave Booth, Sandra Cook, Dave Newson, Yvonne Carns, Nick Hogarth, Gavin Blair Watson. The band come in to the studio and tell us a bit more about who does what. Whatever happened to the Mystics? Mentions for: Mike of Chalfont, Paul Marshall, The Intrepid Birdman Appreciation Society, Mazzy Margaret, John Brennan, Ian Bell, Bob Gower, Cindy of Ealing, Mothball, Hairy Pete, Dave Booth, Gary Williams, Colin Pratt. Part 2 of 3 of this extended broadcast

The show after the 4th Birthday boat trip - which was the first ever pirate radio broadcast from the inshore waters on the Thames. The Thameside Radio 90.2 Christmas party is next Sunday 27 December 1981 at the Shepherds Bush Community Hall. Were you there? There will also be an extended Thameside broadcast on New Year's Eve (which only just kept me awake as far as I can remember). Bob Edwards plays records from the year for listeners to vote on for a chart on New Year's Eve. Many of them have definitely stood the test of time. Sarah has a spot at 8pm. She reads a couple of the 10 letters that Mazzy wrote this week. Dave Birdman tells us about the trip. It really was quite unreal being on a pirate ship in the snow on the Thames playing music - he had a driving test which was cancelled due to snow. Dave plays Christmas in Dredland by Judge Dredd and wishes he hadn't. Loads of new sketches too. There are some snippets from the boat trip - including Mothball being given the bumps for his birthday. There are a number of transmitter changes. It takes up to an hour to track down a pirate transmitter so the regular changes kept the Home Office at bay. It does require a lot of technology and staff to do it though - especially without the benefit of mobile phones. Each site is temporary so the aerials have to be put up, the equipment connected, the show broadcast then it's disconnected, dismantled and moved on. Sundays were very busy for the Thameside crew. Busy for listeners too as they had to move their aerials around. I have assorted recordings of most of Thameside Radio's 4th birthday almost ready to podcast but it's a bit of a jigsaw with some better than others. The end of the birthday show is sadly missing. Do you have the end of the broadcast somewhere? Thameside Radio 90.2 listeners mentioned include Keith Murray from Pinner, Nower Hill High School, Andrew Simpson, John Graves, Clive Barwood, Jerry Sinclair, John Brennan, Doug McLane, Dave Booth, David Swift of West Ealing, Adam Raven.
This Sunday show was the week after a live outside broadcast from Hyde Park and 3 days before the wedding of Charles and Diana. Bob plugs the extended broadcast for teh royal wedding the following Wednesday which starts at 10am. There are also tickets for the Thameside day trip to Brighton on August 16th which cost £5. Alex had Thameside Radio "fast food surveys" from Spud-u-Like in Shepherd's Bush and Huckleberry's in Oxford Street. The report also featured the Birdman's "No-one Loves Me (Just 'Cause I Eat Worms). The Birdman has a really great beginning to his show. Loads of dedications on Bob's show. Some by letter, some on the Curlyman's number. I've tried to pick out ones that might get spotted in a Google search: Francesca from Putney for Tony Fletcher from Apocalypse, Francine, Nick, Xani, Carl, Jeff Jim, Nick and Fran. Moira for the Whitton Skipsters. Mothball for Dandelion and Photon Brick. Toby from Notting Hill for Daniel Abdab, Charlie and Cathy. Carrie for Ian Day and the Paranoid Android Fan Club. Mazzy, Margaret Atkinson, Andy Cooper, John Brennan, John Simon, Jordan Lee, Bernard of St John's Wood, John of Thornton Heath, Alan Simpson, Sue Cook, Nichola for Godolphin and Latymer and, Roslin Park Rugby Club. Greg for the BNZ staff.Juliette and June from tele-ads at the Surrey Comet. Chris Webb. Alison who is Mothball's sister. Ricchard Gordon for Cathy and Jonathan. Everyone at the Alexandria and Fireball concert. There are more, have a listen!
