Enjoy Dave Grim's rendition of this old Negro Spiritual and always current Christmas Song.
We're looking at a song that is indisputably a Christmas carol but with a reach that extends to every season – “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” It belongs to a collection of historic Negro Spirituals, which likely started on the slave plantations in the American South and were later picked up in the Civil Rights Movement by activists like Fannie Lou Hamer and later, The Freedom Singers. “Go Tell It on the Mountain” has been performed by a multitude of heavenly singers and we were lucky enough to speak to one such star- Vanessa Williams- about why she chose to feature the carol on her 1996 Christmas album, Star Bright. Maggi Van Dorn, Hark's host, also garnishes rich cultural and theological insight from Catholic liturgical heavyweight, Eric Styles, along with expert music and history lessons from the wildly talented Emorja Roberson, Assistant Professor of Music and African-American Studies at the Oxford College of Emory University. The music featured in this episode is thanks to The OK Factor, Caleb Noeldner, Kendra Logozar, Kim and Reggie Harris, Vanessa Williams, and Universal Music Enterprises. Special thanks to Pauline Books and Media for the recording of “Go Tell It on the Mountain” by Servant of God Sister Thea Bowman, F.S.P.A. We're grateful to Emorja Roberson for providing commentary and his singing voice throughout, and to Frank Tuson for his audio wizardry as the engineer on this episode. Frank also composed the Hark! theme music and successfully convinced members of his family to record “Down to the River,” heard on this episode. Support “Hark!” become a digital subscriber of America Magazine at: https://link.chtbl.com/04Jrg99F Or you can play a little reindeer game with us and win a subscription to America! The end of Reconstruction can be chronicled by listening to the music of the era. Vann Newkirk, senior editor at The Atlantic, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the Fisk Jubilee Singers, who sang songs that evoked passion and heartbreak, and in doing so, saved an American art form. Swim with Sam offers adult swim classes to prevent drownings Sam Caballero is the founder of Swim with Sam and provides swim classes for all ages, including an introductory adult swimming class, across Hampton Roads. She created an adult swim class, specifically for people of color, who don't feel comfortable in the water. “We are helping our black families learn how to overcome their fear of the water and actually master it for the first time in their life.” The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports drowning rates for Black people are disproportionately higher than for white people. This is a result of systemic racism throughout American history. “Knowing how to swim, not only builds our confidence! [It] helps us to not drown and live a life that is open to new things that we never thought of!” Participants of a Y-USA survey report Black parents are 1.6 times more likely to have low confidence in water activities. The survey shows nearly 60% of Black parents have negative thoughts toward waterways like beaches and 40% have negative ideas about pools. “The hardest thing to see sometimes is when we are all in a group setting and we are the ones sitting outside of the pool,” explains Caballero. “Our black children are the ones in the shallow end with the life jackets, that the feel set apart because they don't know how to swim.” Caballero is a full-time swim instructor and travels throughout the community. She wants hopes to break down aquatic fears and provide life-saving skills. “We don't need to feel set apart anymore,” she said. “This is our lifestyle too and it's normal to us.” Interested in sponsoring the podcast? Injustice - by Iris Wright, Angela Antoine, Cherrie Ferebee, Skyy Harrison, Bartee, Renee Woodard, and Shana Hicks. This book will take you on a journey with the visionary and six co- authors that have been held captive by Injustice. They will give you a glimpse of the pain, anger, humiliation, and trauma that it has caused them and their families. Most importantly, you will see the strength and courage these authors had to evolve. Injustice was motivated to teach people how to fight without fighting, to use their voice to speak up, and to heal from the scars of Injustice. https://www.amazon.com/Injustice-Iris-Wright-ebook/dp/B0C5Y3MMKW Interested in sponsoring the podcast? Hosts Arielle Davis and Kolby Webster introduce Focus: Black Oklahoma in this, our first broadcast originally aired on KWGS in February of 2020. Webster kicks of the show examining how gentrification, eminent domain, big strategic land buys and more are affecting Tulsa's downtown and adjacent neighborhoods with Becky Gligo, the housing policy director for the city of Tulsa mayor's office, touch on the basics of connecting neighbors, organizing, the characteristics of strong neighborhoods, and addressing their concerns. Public discourse about immigration often suggests that DACA recipients are only people who entered the U.S. unlawfully from Central America. While nearly 700,000 reported DACA recipients are from Central American countries, nearly 100,000 are not. Approximately 5,000 are from countries in Africa. While the conversation can be contentious, not every immigrant has the same backstory or point of origin, as we hear in this next piece from Anissa West. Listen to the moving, true story of a formerly incarcerated woman and how she is working to change the prison system for other women. The state of Oklahoma leads the nation in the number of incarcerated women. Crystal Patrick brings us this piece.Mass incarceration is a national crisis. Oklahoma incarcerates more men and women than any other state. Tulsa introduced legislation to reduce the rates at which black Tulsans are arrested and incarcerated. Mika Nicole brings us a story on what Oklahoma is and is not doing on the municipal level to address this issue. When discussing incarceration, things can sometimes become overwhelming and abstract-- because we're talking about numbers, statistics, and raw data. We now move away from the abstraction to introduce you to two Black men who were incarcerated for over 20 years for crimes they did not commit. Negro Spiritual 121 has the story.Next, the first in a series of stories from contributor Kristi Eaton on the power of podcasting to transform torn communities. She speaks with Somali refugees and the Harvard professors behind a newly created podcast.Kojo Asamoah Caesar has entered his name into the District 1 Congressional race. If elected, he would become the first Black person to hold that office. Kojo discussed his plans to strengthen communities by retaining untapped talent with Focus Black Oklahoma's Bracken Klar.Over the last few years Black women across the nation are starting more businesses than any other group. In Tulsa, they are opening businesses in the historic Black Wall Street District. Kiana Smith sits down with Charity Marcus to explore this story. Finally, we offer a story on Black artists, musicians and promoters encountering discrimination at venues across Tulsa. This discrimination is referred to as "The Brown Code." This piece is the first in a series from our contributor Written Quincy.Focus: Black Oklahoma is produced in partnership with KOSU Radio, Tulsa Artist Fellowship, and Tri-City Collective. Additional support is provided by the George Kaiser Family Foundation and the Charles and the Commemoration Fund. Our theme music is by Moffett Music.Focus: Black Oklahoma's executive producers are Quraysh Ali Lansana and Bracken Klar. SynopsisToday's date in 1899 marks the birthday of the famous African-American composer, choir director, and teacher, William L. Dawson, in Anniston, Alabama. After musical studies in Kansas City and Chicago, from 1931 to 1956 Dawson taught at the Tuskegee Institute, where he developed the Institute's Choir into an internationally-renowned ensemble.Dawson's arrangements of African-American spirituals, which he preferred to call folksongs, are justly famous, but in 1934 he produced his masterwork, a Negro Folk Symphony, modeled on Dvorak's New World Symphony, but exhibiting Dawson's own distinctive mastery and development of his themes. His goal, he said, was for audiences to know that it was "unmistakably not the work of a white man.""The themes,” wrote Dawson, “are taken from what are popularly known as Negro Spirituals. In this composition, the composer has employed themes … over which he has brooded since childhood, having learned them at his mother's knee."Dawson's symphony was successfully premiered by Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra, who took the new work to Carnegie Hall, where its 35-year old composer was repeatedly called to the stage. The symphony was revised in 1952 with added African rhythms inspired by the composer's trip to West Africa.Music Played in Today's ProgramWilliam L. UNI Wildcast - The Wildcats Podcast from University High School Charter
A Negro spiritual, also known as a spiritual or a folk hymn, is a type of religious song that emerged from the African American community in the United States during the era of slavery. These songs were often sung by enslaved African Americans as they worked in the fields, and they served as a way to express their faith and provide hope in the face of oppression and hardship. Negro spirituals typically have a call-and-response structure, in which a leader sings a line and the congregation responds with a repeated refrain or chorus. The lyrics often draw on biblical themes and imagery, and may incorporate elements of African music and culture. The melodies are usually simple and repetitive, with a strong emphasis on rhythm and harmony. Some of the most well-known Negro spirituals include "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "Go Down Moses," and "Wade in the Water." These songs have been passed down through generations and have become an important part of African American musical heritage. They continue to be performed and celebrated today as a testament to the strength, resilience, and faith of the African American community.
We are in an era where social media has become a rest haven for critics who have built careers from being talking heads and pundits who offer no solutions or blueprints. Dr. Amos Wilson once said the measure of a quality education and that student's intelligence is being able to solve the problems of his people. Also, what are these "talking heads" building away from their social media platforms that can outlive them? In this episode of Precise Thinking with Minister Zumbi, we delve into the dirty murky waters. Intersections with Phil Allen, Jr. Episode: 018 “Tupac, Biggie, and Jesus: The Role of Hip Hop in Black History and Theology” Airdate: February 8, 2021 Length: 1:08:58 Guests: Dr. Dwight Radcliff, PhD. This episode is not just mind-blowing, but it is fun. Dr. Dwight Radcliff, PhD is a professor, theologian, and pastor and is known for his work at the intersection of Hip Hop and theology. He helps us frame Hip Hop not only in the context of Black History, but also in theological terms. One question we hope to answer in this conversation is whether or not we can see and/or hear the Divine in Hip Hop culture in general, but in the music more specifically. Not only does Dr. Radcliff provide a theological lens, he also gives us a brief history lesson on the phenomenon called Hip Hop born out of the Bronx, NY. He helps us connect the dots between the fruit of Hip Hop we enjoy today to its roots in jazz, the Blues, and the Negro Spirituals. Listen in on this episode. Allow your mind and faith to be stretched. Take God out of your box and see how God can speak to the culture and use its artist and this generation in fresh new ways for necessary transformation. ____________ Phil Allen, Jr. is a Los Angeles-based theologian, social justice activist, filmmaker and author. Allen's book Open Wounds explores the murder of Nate Allen—Phil Allen's grandfather—in the Jim Crow era of South Carolina and how that traumatic event resonated through generations of his family. Open Wounds – which is based on the Allen-produced documentary of the same name – will be published February 9, 2021. Allen is a Ph.D. student studying Christian ethics and Theology and Culture at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA.
