With one breathing exercise, she breaths in through one nostril and then out through the other. She uses a thumb or forefinger to hold one nostril closed at a time. “It relaxes my mind. It makes my mind so full of ease. It brings you back to the present moment,” she added. To get ahead of anxiety before starting her workday, sales representative Lindsay Carlisle of Michigan does breathing exercises with her seven-year-old daughter during their drive to school. They breathe in for seven counts, hold their breath for five, and then breathe out for seven counts. They repeat this several times. “Throughout that process, my shoulders start to drop on their own, and it really is calming,” Carlisle said. Suze Yalof Schwartz was an overworked magazine editor when her mother-in-law taught her a three-minute meditation method. Yalof Schwartz says it changed her life. She left her career and founded Unplug Meditation, a Santa Monica, California, company with a meditation studio, an app, and programs for corporate customers. “When we slow down our breath, we send a signal to our brain that everything's OK, even when it's not,” she said. Another 16-second breathing exercise is called box breathing. You breathe in for four counts, hold for four, breathe out for four counts and hold for another four. Yalof Schwartz has taught it to people in stressful jobs including firefighters, police and doctors. “It is the best thing that you can do at work before you have a meeting, before you send out an email that you wish you didn't send, before you have a difficult conversation, because it just calms you down, gets rid of your negative energy,” she said. Employers such as Coca-Cola, Mattel and Netflix have used Unplug Meditation to teach breathing or meditation. It is not always easy for workers to find space for deep breathing exercises. For example, salespeople often work alongside their customers. Yalof Schwartz suggests doing breathing exercises when making a sale or organizing items. Carlisle, the sales representative, sets a timer on her phone telling her to breathe deeply. She also keeps a note near her computer that simply says “Breathe.” “The anxiety is always going to be there,” Carlisle said. “But at least I know I have one small tool. ... It sounds so simple and silly, but it works.”

Stuff That Interests Me
ChatGPT: the “scary good” tech that is changing the world

Stuff That Interests Me

I've been playing with a new technology this week, which, I think, is as potentially transformative as Google's search engine, Facebook's network or Apple's iPhone. It's that significant. Elon Musk says it's “scary good”; Google management is so worried about it they have issued a “code red”; and it has achieved in just five days what took Netflix three and a half years. And it's going to put me out of a job. This is Open AI's latest offering ChatGPT - short for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer. Open AI, if you are not familiar with it, is a research institute that develops artificial intelligence.  The company has developed language models that can generate human-like text and neural networks that can create images from text descriptions. Its founders include many of the world's most famous tech entrepreneurs, not least Elon Musk, and it is funded by private donations and research contracts. Its lofty “ultimate goal is to benefit humanity through the responsible development of AI”. I first heard about ChatGPT from my son when he came back from university last weekend.  Apparently, loads of students are getting it to write their essays for them. Academics, reports the Guardian, say it generates exam responses that “would result in full marks if submitted by an undergraduate”.  Programmers meanwhile, the Guardian continues, “have used the tool to solve coding challenges in obscure programming languages in a matter of seconds – before writing limericks explaining the functionality.” I was discussing it on Twitter and User @Peng33G got it to write a perfectly passable song in the style of Dominic Frisby.  I urge you to go and have a play.To give you an idea of how quickly this thing has found users, cast your eyes over the following, which shows the amount of time to reach one million users. Netflix → 3.5 years Airbnb → 2 years Facebook → 10 months Zoom → 9 months Spotify → 5 months Instagram → 2.5 months iPhone → 74 days ChatGPT → 5 days Share this really interesting article on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.To verify the above take would probably take me an hour of research. ChatGP did it in a matter of seconds.  “The information you provided appears to be accurate”, it said. “Here is a brief summary of the growth of each of the companies or products you mentioned:* Netflix: It took Netflix approximately 3.5 years to reach one million subscribers. The company was founded in 1997 and reached one million subscribers in 2001.* Airbnb: It took Airbnb approximately 2 years to reach one million users. The company was founded in 2008 and reached one million users in 2010.* Facebook: It took Facebook approximately 10 months to reach one million users. The company was founded in 2004 and reached one million users in 2005.* Zoom: It took Zoom approximately 9 months to reach one million daily meeting participants. The company was founded in 2011 and reached one million daily meeting participants in 2012.* Spotify: It took Spotify approximately 5 months to reach one million users. The company was founded in 2006 and reached one million users in 2007.* Instagram: It took Instagram approximately 2.5 months to reach one million users. The company was founded in 2010 and reached one million users in 2010.* iPhone: It took the iPhone approximately 74 days to reach one million units sold. The iPhone was released in 2007 and reached one million units sold in 2007.ChatGPT has multiple uses in the real world  My buddy, business consultant and tech entrepreneur, Danny Richman, mentors, as he puts it, “a young lad with poor literacy skills who is starting a landscaping business. He struggles to communicate with clients in a professional manner.” In less than 15 minutes, with no coding required, he created a ChatGPT-powered Gmail account to which the landscaper sends a message. It responds with the text to send to the client. Danny continues: “I also helped him use GPT3 to prepare an estimate, create a contract and respond to client enquiries. He just secured his first contract worth £220,000.  This would not have been possible without this tech”. So what will ChatGPT be used for?  In the words of ChatGPT itself, slightly edited by me, “A wide range of natural language processing tasks, including language translation, text summarization, text generation, and language modelling” . So that might be chatbots and virtual assistants; “text generation tasks”, as it puts it - writing news articles or social media posts. It could also be used to summarise texts - anything from legal documents to the tax code to the bible, by generating a shorter summary of a longer piece of text. Its capabilities are likely to improve as it is further developed and refined. It is learning all the time. So what does all this mean for investors? And how do you invest in ChatGPT? How to invest in ChatGPT the technology shaping the world  Earlier in the week, I looked at how the world's largest companies by market cap change from decade to decade. Seven of the top ten in 2011 were natural resources companies. A decade later, in 2021 not one was. Nine were tech companies: Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Facebook, Tesla, Berkshire Hathaway, TSMC, Tencent Holdings, Nvidia. Which of them will be there in 2031? Many of these, you might have thought a year ago, have near-impervious monopolies. But tech changes quickly, as this latest development demonstrates. Already Alphabet's position looks precarious. Microsoft, though, was there in 2011 and in 2021. And guess what? It owns a large chunk of Open AI. It has made a number of investments in OpenAI, including a $1 billion investment announced in 2019. It is not known if Microsoft has a controlling stake in OpenAI or if it holds a minority stake in the company. So the way to get some exposure to this new tech is to own Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), though it's not exactly a pure play. Its stake in Open AI is minimal in the context of everything else it does. Moreover, will Microsoft still be one of the world's ten largest companies in 2031? That would make three decades in a row. I also gather ChatGPT is costing a lot of money to run. $3m per day is the figure doing the rounds on the internet. The bot itself would not confirm: “GPT is a large language model that requires significant computational resources to run, as it is trained on a very large dataset and has a very large number of parameters. As a result, it is likely that running GPT would incur significant costs, depending on the specific circumstances”. But that's the way with big tech. Get the users first, then worry about the profits. ChatGPT is doing that in spades. If the product is free, you, the user, are the product - and all that. By the way, I got ChatGPT to write some of this article for me (though I ended up subbing it quite a bit - stylistically, I still feel I'm a better writer - but only just). The Dr Boyce Breakdown
Dave Chappelle under major attack for his Netflix special

Black Justice Groups wants to Cancel Dave Chappelle on Netflix It looks like Dave Chappelle is under threat of being cancelled due to the controversial nature of his new Netflix special. We are going to have a barbershop conversation about the topic. According to Variety: Dave Chappelle is drawing a growing wave of criticism for his derogatory comments about the LGBTQ+ community in his newest Netflix stand-up special. The special, titled “The Closer,” premiered on the streamer on Tuesday and is meant to serve as a final entry in a series of stand-up routines by Chappelle on Netflix. In the new release, the comedian makes explicit jokes about trans women and offers defenses for previous derogatory comments made by figures such as “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling and rapper DaBaby. Chappelle also references criticism he faced over the past two years for makings jokes about the trans community in his specials “Equanimity” and “Sticks and Stones.” More from IndieWire: Dave Chappelle ends his latest Netflix comedy special, “The Closer,” by proclaiming he is finished with transgender and LGBTQ jokes “until we are both sure that we are laughing together,” adding, “I'm telling you, it's done. I'm done talking about it. All I ask of your community, with all humility: Will you please stop punching down on my people?” For organizations such as GLAAD and The National Black Justice Coalition, that declaration is too little, too late. Chappelle already had a history filling his Netflix specials with offensive transgender jokes, and that trend continues in “The Closer.” At one point, the comedian declares himself “team TERF” (meaning a trans-exclusionary radical feminist) while saying J.K. Rowling doesn't deserve to be “canceled” for her anti-trans beliefs. Representatives for Chappelle did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment, and Netflix declined to comment on the matter.

Virgo Season is here! After dancing in the fire of Leo Season, we have touched back down to Earth in grounding, detail-oriented, health-conscious, organized Virgo Season, where the focus shifts from creative expression to self-improvement. Virgo brings a devotional attitude toward discipline, encourages us to take full responsibility, and become the best version of ourselves — with an awareness that we are an ongoing work in progress, and it's never going to be perfect. Represented by the maiden/virgin, Virgo energy brings an emphasis on the wellbeing of the body (mind & soul) and what it means to honor our sacred vessel. We feel called to take better care of ourselves, relieve ourselves of physical toxins and poor energy, settle into a routine that helps optimize our day, and introduce healthy habits. In tending to the health of the body, this means we must first honor the wisdom of the body and listen to what it asks of us in this time. In this episode, I dive into the topic of body intelligence — how our soul holds innate, divine wisdom, constantly guiding us toward expansion through internal whispers that we can feel nudging us from within — and how it is in our best interest to listen to the cues we are given and trust ourselves in the followthrough. It's that voice that tells you to leave a job, end a relationship, cut ties with a friend… It's that voice that tells you to follow your dream, to start saying yes to yourself, to lean into your passion… It's that voice that tells you to quit it with the vices, stop procrastinating, to choose your to-do list over Netflix… It's that voice that tells you it's time to eat better, drink more water, engage in physical activity… It's THAT voice. You know the one. The one we ignore because we're scared of the execution of whatever it is trying to tell us. The thing with THAT voice, is that it won't stop knocking until you answer the door. Yoga for Virgo Season also available on the YouTube channel to help you ground in the energy required today attention to that body intelligence, tune in and take action. Please subscribe to the podcast and leave it a 5-star rating and written review on whichever platform you listen. It's incredibly helpful in getting this in more people's ears.

Welcome back fellow Gothamites, Defenders, Angels and Demons, Boys and Girls and fellow Watchers. We're taking a look back at all the shows we discussed last year and give a sneak peak at the new shows we're covering in next year. Join us for our 2019 Recap and 2020 preview podcast. All the shows we discussed in 2019 and one of the shows we'll be discussing in 2020. 1. Gotham: Season Five (Fox TV US) After five years and one hundred episodes our first ever show came to an end on Fox in 2019. We discussed the show for almost 150 episodes on Gotham TV podcast. Even though these twelve episodes we're perfect there were a lot of great moments for the cast we've loved talking about for six years. Goodbye Gotham 2. Punisher Season 2 (Netflix) It was also the second and final season of The Punisher on Netflix. As each of the Marvel Netflix shows finished we got closer and closer to the end of Defenders TV Podcast. Jon Bernthal totally embodied Frank Castle this year and we hope we see more of him in the future. Farewell Frank Castle 3. Good Omens (Amazon Prime) Based on a 1990 book written by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett this was the first show we covered on Amazon Prime. From the casting of Michael Sheen as the angel Aziraphale and David Tennant as his earthbound devilish counterpart Crowley this show was a fantastic endeavour. We loved every second of chatting about this show. 4. Jessica Jones Season 3 (Netflix) Jessica Jones was the final show commited to Netflix from Marvel. The main cast of Krysten Ritter, Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville, Rebecca De Mornay and Carrie-Anne Moss were on top form throughout the season. With the addition of new office temp Gillian (Aneesh Sheth), possible love interest Erik Gelden (played by Benjamin Walker) and a new type of villain Sallinger (Jeremy Bobb) the show went out on a high. 5. Pennyworth Season 1 (EPIX) In July the creators of Gotham, Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon returned to the DC Batverse for a story of the early years of Alfred Pennyworth. Opening with a star making turn from Paloma Faith as Peggy Sykes the ten episode series was a blast. In a reimagined version of London we saw what the DC universe would do to the city. The show started slow but after a twist death in episode three it went from strength to strength. We're excited for season two in 2020. 6. The Boys (Amazon Prime) Based on the comic series from Garth Ennis Amazon made a bid for the most adult show of the year with The Boys. From flying dolphins to crashing planes Season 1 of the show was balls to the wall. But what surprised us was how much heart showrunner Erik Kripke was able to get out into the show. An absolute highlight of our year. 7. Watchmen (HBO and Sky Atlantic) It was an uphill battle for the Watchmen from the start. Based on a series of comic books that everybody from The New York Times to local comic shop owners have recommended for decades it was going to the be tough. But this sequel from Damon Lindelof and a team of extraordinary writers delivered far more than we all hoped. If this season is all we see from the Watchmen it will have been worth every moment. What's coming in 2020? Star Trek: Picard (Amazon Prime) From January 2020 we'll be going where we've never been before. We will be joining Patrick Stewart and his pit-bull discussing every episode about Star Trek Picard. We're so excited to see how the story of Jean-Luc Picard continues. The show will include special appearances from Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Marina Sirts and Jeri Ryan but it is a brand new story in a new time for the characters. Engage! The possibility of altering human genetics to create designer babies or to improve the human species has been in the realm of science fiction for decades. Well, the ‘future is here’. In October of 2019, Netflix released the first season of a new miniseries called Unnatural Selection. It focuses on recent advances in genome editing and the many moral and ethical dilemmas associated with it. As Christians, we need to be aware of this new and growing field, for it is no longer ‘science fiction’. Have you been watching Marie Kondo's "Tidying Up" on Netflix? It seems to be what everyone is talking about these days! If something doesn't bring you joy, toss it! While that's great for physical things in our life, we don't talk about ditching habits and elements of our life that don't serve us anymore! Throwing out things we don't wear is great, but what about habits that waste our time? Jobs that don't fulfill us? Friendships that don't add to our lives anymore? To start off the new year, Dan Mason shares the six things you need to let go of in the new year if you want to truly live life amplified. This week, Dan discusses... - What forgiveness REALLY is and why it’s a powerful self-focused tool that can set you free. - How your thoughts can be a self-Fulfilling prophecy. - The spiritual law of cause and effect and how you are in control of what happens in your life. - The power of changing the story of your life to allow new things to enter it. - Why blaming intelligently is the way to take power and control of a situation and story. - How toxic relationships can keep you stuck and sabotage your purpose. - Why putting yourself first, not last, actually benefits those that are important in your life. - How our relationship with digital devices and social media actually harm us more than connect us. - The power of asking for help and having a mentor on your side.  -Why now is the year to leave your soul-sucking job. ************************************** Learn more about Dan and how he can help you add more purpose, fulfillment, and joy in ALL aspects of your life at creativesoulcoaching.net Join the Life Amplified Power Tribe and talk to Dan about this week's episode: facebook.com/groups/lifeamplified Be social with Dan on Instagram and Twitter: @CSCDanMason Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

Have you seen Wild Wild Country on Netflix? It's a documentary about the hubbub surrounding the commune of the followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (now known as Osho) in Oregon. Everybody's talking about it, including us! Amelia hasn't watched the series yet, so Pitney told her all about the events that happened back then, and how many parallels there are with the way things are now. Hate, intolerance, anger, discrimination, violence. None of that has gone away. And in the middle of it all, a palate cleanser about how Tricia Von Liechtenstein feels about high efficiency washer and dryers. (It's not positive.) (We spoke to Kip back in late June, just after his film 'What The Health' was released on Netflix) It was an honor, and a thrill, to have Kip Andersen on the show! Kip is the co-director & producer of the outstanding documentaries Cowspiracy and What The Health. Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret is a groundbreaking feature-length environmental documentary following intrepid filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water consumption and pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the transportation industry, and is a primary driver of rainforest destruction, species extinction, habitat loss, topsoil erosion, ocean “dead zones,” and virtually every other environmental ill. Yet it goes on, almost entirely unchallenged. What the Health is the groundbreaking follow-up film from the creators of the award-winning documentary Cowspiracy. The film exposes the collusion and corruption in government and big business that is costing us trillions of healthcare dollars, and keeping us sick. What The Health is a surprising, and at times hilarious, investigative documentary that will be an eye-opener for everyone concerned about our nation’s health and how big business influences it. Very exciting to hear that Kip is working on a few other projects and it sounds like 2018 is going to be a big year!
